Savannah is my twin sister and my life would be completely different without her. Everyone always thinks it's amazing to have a twin and it is but it's also not. People always beautify having a twin. They say it's natural to be good friends, which is true, but nobody ever talks about the negative side of it. People also say things like “Who's the smarter twin?” As twins, we are constantly getting compared. In the second grade, she got admitted to a class for advanced students. In 6th grade she was put into advanced math. I finally got put into advanced math for 8th grade but it still wasn't enough because by then she was in a class that was two years ahead and mine was just one. So people called me the dumb twin. I played soccer from the ages 5-9.I quit when I was 9 because people decided Savannah was better and I didn't want to hear it anymore. She still plays. We also played softball together when we were 10-11.I quit that too mainly for the same reason. One day when I was in 7th grade, Savannah, our friends and I were at top golf for one of their birthdays. We were almost done playing. My friend Allison said, “Savannah, how does it feel to be losing to the unathletic twin?” Allison didn't play any sports either, but since she wasn't a twin, she wasn't getting compared to anyone. I could write a million stories about who's the prettier twin? Who's the uglier twin? Who's the funnier twin? It never really ends. Even though we get compared, I still love Savannah and she has made such a huge impact on my life. As I've gotten older, it has less of an effect on me when people compare us. I have realized that there is always going to be someone out there comparing us and there is nothing I can do about it. I am growing into my own person. 24.What is rarely discussed about twins according to the passage? A. The appearance. B. The bad side. C. The difference. D. The friendship. 25.Why was the author thought stupid? A. She did very badly in class. B. She learned advanced math in Grade 8. C. She liked to compare herself to Savannah. D. She was worse than Savannah in her studies. 26.Why did the author give up softball? A. She had lost interest in it. B. She was injured in a match. C. She was laughed at by teammates. D. She played it worse than Savannah. 27.What is the author's attitude towards being compared at last? A. Acceptable. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Negative. [答案] 24.B 25.D 26.D 27.A [解析] 24. 根据第一段中的“They say it's natural to... the negative side of it.” C Children seem to care so much about their names. A study shows that most of young people wish their parents had given them a different name. Some people choose to change their names when they grow up. Many people in show business don't use the names their parents gave them. Have you ever heard of Joanne? No? The answer could be “yes” if we call her stage name instead! You may never heard of Margaret. But if we tell you her stage name, you might know her as a famous dancer. In many cultures, there are special ideas about how to choose a name. For example, many people choose a name that has been in their family for many years. It tells the child where he or she comes from. Choosing a good name isn't easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message. For example, Edith means “valuable gift”. Amanda means “love”. And Fara means “joy”. Names like these tell family and friends how happy they are with their new baby. Other names can say something about the events during the birth of the child. In Africa, a first-born son may have the name Mosi and the name Ama means “born on Saturday”. Is every boy called Curitis polite? And is every girl called Mahira quick and full of energy? No parents can tell what kind of person their child will grow up to be. Just because parents name a boy Fahim, it doesn't mean he will be clever. All they can do is hope. 28.What can we know about the study? A. Young kids don't care about their future. B. Most of young people care about their names. C. Most girls want to change their names. D. Most parents want to rename by themselves. 29.Why is “Joanne” mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To prove some people hope to be renamed. B. To introduce a famous dancer to readers. C. To introduce her true name. D. To tell the benefit of name. 30.Why is it difficult to choose a good name? A. Kids always want to rename. B. It is hard to change kids' names. C. Parents aren't sure if their kids will like the name. D. Parents want to choose a meaningful name. 31.What is the best title for the passage? A. Names Can Never Influence Our Lives B. Your Parents' Wish Is Behind Names C. Love Your Parents, Love Your Name D. Methods of Choosing a Suitable Name [答案] 28.B 29.A 30.D 31.B [解析] 28. 根据第二段中的“Some people choose to change their names ... ever heard of Joanne? No?” 根据第四段中的“Many parents search books that ... carries a message. ”可知,选一个好名字不容易,因为父母都想选有寓意的名字。 31.标题归纳题。通读全文可知,文章介绍的是父母为子女取名字的时候,通常会取一些包含深意与祝福的名字。B项最适合作文章标题。 【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了父母为子女取名字的时候,通常会取包含深意和祝福的名字。 D If it seems like all your friends have smartphones, you may be on to something. A new report by Common Sense Media, which reports on technology and media for children, found that by the age of 11, more than half of kids in the US have their own smartphone. By age 12, more than two-thirds do, and by 14, teens are just as likely as adults to own a smartphone. Some kids start much younger. Nearly 20% of 8-year-olds have their own smartphone! So, what's the right age for you? Well, I study the effects of media and technology on kids, and I'm here to say that there is no single right answer to this question. The best I can offer is this: When both you and your parents feel the time is right. Here are some points to consider to help you and your parents make this decision. Be responsible: Have you shown that you are generally responsible? Do you understand the value of money, and can you save up to buy things you want? Keep safe: Do you travel to or from school or after-school activities without an adult? This is when phones often go from a “want” to a “need”.Sometimes parents report that they feel better knowing they can reach their children directly, and that their kids can reach them, too. Be careful: Do you treat your friends with kindness and respect? Do you know the fact that once something goes out onto the web, it can never truly be deleted (删除)? When you have a smartphone, your parents are the No.1 most important influence in your life. If parents use their phones all day, guess what? Their children probably will be, too. However, if parents have smartphone habits like putting the phone away during meals, that will go a long way towards helping kids develop the same habits. 32.In America, at what age do about 67% of children own their phones? A. 11. B. 12. C. 13. D. 14. 33.What do children use a phone for when it goes from a “want” to a “need” ? A. Get some information online. B. Chat with their friends online. C. Send messages to their friends. D. Keep in touch with their parents. 34.What should parents do according to the last paragraph? A. Teach their children to use phones. B. I quite understand how you feel. Therefore, I am writing to offer you some tips on how to get back into shape. To begin with, I strongly recommend that you should have a balanced diet, because you are what you eat! Say no to junk food and add more healthy foods to your meals, such as vegetables, fish and dairy products. In addition, if I were you, I would begin to work out on a regular basis. Start out small by jogging for 30 minutes or doing 30 push-ups every day. Most importantly, always think about fitness rather than weight. There is no point in comparing yourself with the slim people on TV all the time. Every small change in your lifestyle can make a big difference. Just take the first step towards health and fitness! Wish you luck! On a bright Saturday, my peaceful lunchtime was suddenly stopped when my dad surprised me with an unplanned idea. I couldn't hide my dissatisfaction as what was supposed to be a relaxing Saturday turned into a day focusing on football—a sport I wasn't very excited about. Many of my friends loved sports, while I preferred to find comfort in the pages of a good book rather than run around on a football court. My lack of interest resulted in average performance on our team, and I often felt like I was a problem for my coach and teammates. Things changed last month when our coach announced a coming match against the champions scheduled for a month later. The realization that this important game would have a big audience only made me more stressed. The fear of possibly letting the team down weighed on me. Having a strong desire to have a positive influence, I decided to practice hard every day. The reason why I did so was that I wanted to help the team and defeat the self-doubt affecting my performance. As the match day came, my teammates seemed unsure about including me in the lineup I wouldn't have minded sitting out the match, but the situation was different. With one player short, they unwillingly included me, and our team stepped onto the field to enjoy cheers from the crowd. The game started, and within ten minutes, I received a warning. Before long, the referee (裁判) showed me a second yellow card, forcing me to leave the field. When I got back into the game, the score was tied, and the next goal would decide the winner. Suddenly, the ball came toward me, and I felt very nervous. My teammates seemed tired, and the other team wanted to win. With great courage, I kicked the ball.   After this win, football became different to me.   [答案] One possible version: With great courage, I kicked the ball. The other team, probably not expecting much from me because of my earlier performance, were surprised when the ball went past the goalkeeper. Our team won, with cheers and laughter filling the air. My teammates, once uncertain about whether to include me or not, surrounded me, offering high-fives and hugs, while our coach wore a satisfied smile on his face. The doubt before the match was now replaced with pride. After this win, football became different to me. Football became something I enjoyed, bringing me happiness and a sense of achievement. I discovered my hidden skills on the football court. What started as an unwilling duty changed into a journey of realizing personal value. Now, with confidence, I continue to explore the details of the sport. Every practice is a chance for growth, and the football court has become a place for self-discovery and improvement for me.
