I woke up this morning and it was harder to get out of bed than usual. I didn't sleep well because I was very nervous. I had many questions. What should I wear? What should I put in my schoolbag? I finally fell asleep around 5:45 and my alarm started going off at 6 o'clock. Well it was time for me to start my first day of high school.
My first class wasn't too bad. I had to listen to my English teacher who discussed the importance of themes and plots, but otherwise it was a pretty relaxing class. My other classes that followed were pretty much the same. Not too many students had sat together yet from what I could see but then again, lunch hadn't started yet. Thinking about all of this made me wonder where I would sit during lunchtime. I was hoping I wouldn't feel too lonely and would find a good table to sit at and enjoy my lunch.
I chose a pizza and an orange soda. I was thankful that the food didn't taste terrible. More importantly,I managed to find some new friends to sit with so I wouldn't have that on my mind for the rest of the day. I was just happy I had a great lunchtime.
My first day at school was almost over when I felt a tap on my shoulder in Chemistry class. It was a girl named Samantha asking if she could read my textbook with me because she left hers at home. I told her yes and invited her to sit next to me. When the class bell rang,we exchanged numbers to hang out after school. I felt like my day couldn't have gone any smoother. I just had one more class to get through and I would be done for the day.

Senior high school is difficult for everyone. You are going through an awkward time and you may either fit in right away or feel like a complete outcast. But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be good for you in the short term and long term.
Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to the school. Joining a club forces you to communicate with people who have similar interests as you. Even if you are the shyest and quietest person, you are sure to develop a relationship with at least one person in the club that you decide to join. Speaking from personal experience, I have met some of my best friends from my after-school activities and had many new doors open to me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that doing activities helps you when you are applying for college. Being known as outgoing is a highly valued trait (特质); it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there, be determined (意志坚定的), and best of all try new things. Another nice thing is that (depending on the activity) it could help you develop skills that you could use during a college interview.
Productivity is something that teens seem to continuously have a problem with. Most teens go to school and then come home and spend the rest of the day in front of the television or phone, but activities help them avoid this. Teens are also very easy to influence and if they fall into the wrong group of people, they could fall into results such as problems with the law. Clubs are a great place to spend time and be with good people who you can fall back on if you need them.
Maybe the most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefit it brings. The classroom isn't the only learning environment in a school. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, keeping an eye on the time, and being organized are things you will use every single day of your life.
28.What does the underlined word “outcast” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. A person who is popular. B. A person who is not intelligent.
C. A person who is confident. D. A person who is not accepted.
29.What do colleges think highly of according to the passage?
A. The number of clubs you have joined.
B. The strong relationships you have built.
C. The bright personality you have developed.
D. The skills you have learned while forming a club.
30.What benefit of joining a club is talked about in paragraph 4?
A. Increasing knowledge. B. Learning team-working skills.
C. Improving your fitness level. D. Making good use of your time.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A. What Club Should You Join?
B. How can You Join a Club You Like?
C. Why Should You Join a Club?
D. Should You Join a Second Club?
[答案]

29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Another really nice thing...outgoing is a highly valued trait”可知,大学高度重视你所培养出的开朗的个性。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Productivity is something...activities help them avoid this.”可知,第四段谈论了加入社团的一个好处——可以提高效率、更好地利用时间。

Starting a new term always feels a little bit like a beginning of a new year. Last year, as a fresher, I felt a little worried at the beginning of each term. That's why, this year, I want to start the term with a positive mind. I have collected some ways that can really help improve my confidence.
It has been found that if we want to succeed, we should break our new plan into smaller tasks. It sounds easy, but how do we start? It is a good idea to write down things you will do every evening. Start with the most important task and then focus on smaller tasks that you are sure you will be able to complete. If you are not a fan of a paper to-do list, there are so many fun apps. Sticking to the plan will stop you from doing everything at the last minute.
It is also very important to stay active. Set a goal of 10,000 steps a day or go for a run with a friend. Honestly, you don't even need to go to a gym, because there are different kinds of exercises online. You can even stretch (伸展) for 15 minutes every day. Just choose whatever works for you. Exercise can improve our ability to sleep, reduce stress and make us healthy.
Before starting the term, think of your goals—not only those towards which you are working, but also those that you've already managed to achieve. Don't feel too anxious. Notice your progress and always remember to take a rest. Keep in mind that everything takes time. Take a 10-minute rest between lessons, which can be a conversation with a friend, checking the news, or taking a walk. In short, do something for yourself.
32.How did the author feel when he started a new term last year?
A. Anxious. B. Excited. C. Confused. D. Confident.
33.What should we do to start a new term according to the second paragraph?
A. Keep a diary. B. Change plans often.
C. Make a to-do list. D. Focus on what we like.
34.What does the author say about exercise?
A. Online exercises are much better.
B. Taking exercise in a gym is useless.
C. We must spend a lot of time on exercise.
D. We should choose exercise that is helpful to us.
35.In which part of a newspaper can we read this passage?

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mr. Smith, my 10-grade English teacher, was one of the teachers who I would never forget and the story between Mr. Smith and me was the most amazing one I wanted to share.
When I was young at school, I loved talking, which was not always appreciated by Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was a teacher whom no one liked because he was too strict. He stood about 5.5 feet tall ( about 1.68 meters ), was very thin and wore his hair pulled back in a way that gave him a horsey look. Whenever he got upset, he would lower his head and look at you over the top of his glasses.
One day in his class I was busy talking. I didn't realize he had stopped teaching, staring straight at me. “Tom, I would like to see you after school.”
Later, Mr. Smith explained in a low, but very firm voice that he expected me to listen when he was talking. As punishment he told me to write a 1,000-word essay (文章) on education and its effects on society. He wanted it in by the following Wednesday.
Well, I met my deadline (最后期限).I was confident. It was a good paper. And I expected a sign of praise from him. The next day in class, however, he was looking at me over the top of his glasses. He called me forward and returned my paper. “Go back and rewrite it,” he said. “Remember, each paragraph is supposed to begin with a topic sentence.” When he gave my paper back a second time, he corrected the grammar. The third time, the spelling. The fourth time, it was punctuation (标点符号). The fifth, it wasn't neat enough. I was sick!
The sixth time, I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving enough space. When he saw the paper, he removed his glasses, and accepted it with a smile. After that, I put the whole thing out of my mind.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
One morning after three weeks, Mr. Smith came into the class happily.
I sat in my own seat, excited and grateful.
[答案]
One possible version:
One morning after three weeks, Mr. Smith came into the class happily. He said, “Class, do you still remember the essay contest held in our school? Now the result has come out. I am glad to tell you that Tom has won first prize with the title‘Education and Its Effects on Society’.” Then cheers of praise rocked the whole classroom. After class, many classmates asked me how I made it. I told them that it was not because of my good writing skills but because of the six-time rewrites required by Mr. Smith.
I sat in my own seat, excited and grateful. It was the first time that I had ever won a prize. “Thank you, sir. It's due to your support that I could win the prize,”I said to Mr. Smith, with a mixture of gratitude and excitement. I knew that when I wrote and rewrote that essay, I began to learn how to write well. From then on, I developed a strong interest in writing. I felt a sense of purpose and determination. I was inspired to start writing and exploring my creativity.
