We have recently heard some interesting ways that 5G technology might change our lives in the future. 5G promises Internet speeds between 50 to 100 times faster than 4G systems. Such improvements are sure to be popular with 5G users worldwide. While it is set to start only in just a few areas of the United States this year, much of the rest of the world is not expected to receive this service until 2023.
One project in Britain, though, is already testing this super-fast technology, but not on humans. Instead, the experimental subjects are an unlikely group of Internet users— cows. The system connects the animals to 5G in an effort to automate (使自动化) the milking process.
The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems. Testing areas were set up at farms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connected devices that link up to a robotic milking system. The system uses sensors (传感器) and machine learning to fully automate the process.
System designers say technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks toward an automatic gate. The device is designed to recognize each cow. It then positions equipment to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines offer food for the cow as a reward.
One of the test areas is in the town of Shepton Mallet in southwest England. There, about 50 of the farm’s 180 cows are fitted with 5G smart collars and ear sensors. Project officials say the devices do not harm the cows and the sensors help farmers immediately find problems or health concerns.
Duncan Forbes, the project leader, told Reuters that so far, he thinks the project shows the farm’s cow operations can be greatly improved with 5G technology.
Forbes added that the experiment provides strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future “not just on farms, but in rural communities right across the country”.
8. What do we know about 5G technology from the first two paragraphs?
A. It has changed our lives. B. It has more users than 4G.
C. It has not been widely used. D. It has been used on cows in the US.
9. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The introduction of 5G devices. B. The milking process with 5G technology.
C. The purpose of system designers. D. The way machines provide cows with food
10. Why are some cows equipped with ear sensors?
A. To recognize every cow. B. To judge their position.
C. To reduce the harm from devices. D. To find their health problems
11. What is Forbes’ attitude to o the future of 5G technology?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Uncaring

Most of us are aware of “Is the glass half full or half empty?” litmus test. If you pick the former, you’re an “optimist”; otherwise, you're a “pessimist”. It’s not a black-or-white test, but it can measure how one sees life.
According to psychologist Lissy Ann Puno, most of us grow up wanting to be an optimist -- a person who can see the good in any situation and can stay hopeful when facing challenges. For some people, though, life happens and they start to see the glass half-empty instead. Pessimists tend to see the wrong in every situation, and blame external factors and circumstances when things aren’t going their way.
Being continuously fed with bad news and disappointments can turn optimistic children into adults that are critical of almost everything. For some the shift becomes easier, being raised by pessimistic parents. Others still remain optimistic, thanks to a positive household growing up.
“This is why developing optimism in young children is crucial for their development as adults,” said Lissy Ann. If adopted at an early age, this powerful personality quality can help children grow into strong adults capable of handling life’s circumstances with confidence, courage, and hope. What parent wouldn’t want that for their children?
“Children are seen as natural optimists,” Lissy Ann said. They come into this world with unbiased eyes and a pure heart that hasn’t been influenced by social expectations, life experiences, severe mental shock, or authority figures yet. Whether a child grows up to be optimistic or not is part genetic and part environmental. “Childhood experiences, parent-child connection, or authority figures will all have some influence,” she said. Although optimism (or the lack of it) could be passed down genetically, it can also be taught.
12. What do people who see the glass half-empty refer to in paragraph 2?
A. People who become pessimistic B. People who learn the truth about life
C. People who see different sides of things D. People hold onto hope in difficult times
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A Factors that affect children’s attitude to life.
B. The negative influence of parents over children’s growth.
C. The pattern of children’s mental transformation.
D. Circumstances that improve children’s personality.
14. Why is it important for children to be optimistic according to paragraph 4?
A. It leads them to future success. B. It enables them to be wise in adulthood.
C. It makes them mentally strong in adulthood. D. It helps them meet their parents’ expectations.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Children are more optimistic than adults. B. Genetic factors decide how children see life.
C. Optimism strengthens parent-child connection. D. Proper guidance helps raise optimistic children.

For some, the shift becomes easier, being raised by pessimistic parents.
A. Factors that affect children’s attitude to life.
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. C 15. D

Zaib grew up in a single-parent family. Her mother worked in an office as a receptionist but she admitted her only daughter to one of the best schools of the city.
Two days ago, Zaib refused to take her lunch.
“Zaib, Honey! Is everything alright? Why you didn’t take your lunch? Didn’t you feel any hunger? ” Rohana, her mother asked.
“I didn’t like it. A friend of mine was having dairy chocolate. I want these”, Zaib said in an offended mood.
“No problem. We will get these next week, I promise”, she tried to convince her.
“No, I need them today.” she said in an angry manner and rushed towards the room.
Rohana wasn’t having her salary for two months because her company had fallen into crises. Now, she was a bit tense about her daughter’s demand and wondered what to do.
Next day, Zaib didn’t eat anything and rushed to school. The girl with dairy chocolate was none other than her cousin, Saddaf. For the whole day, she was upset, thinking about her mother. She thought her mother didn’t love her deep, and that was why she didn’t meet her demand. When school bell rang, she decided to go to Saddaf’s house.
In Saddaf’s room, they did their homework, and then played. Her aunt Mrs. Saba prepared meal for both of them. “Aunt Saba is much better than Mummy”, she thought. Mrs. Saba told her that her mother had to work till late at night, so she could stay with them that night. She gladly accepted this offer.
Next day, she thought aunt Saba would pack some dairy chocolate in her lunch box, but Mrs. Saba just asked her to take breakfast. Neither did she ask her to bring her lunch box nor did she fill her box with chocolates. Her home was nearby, so she asked aunt Saba to drop her at her home where she might meet her mummy and bring her lunch. Saba aunt ordered her driver to do so. Then she went to kitchen to take her lunch box, returned to aunt’s car. Staring at the box on her way to school, she felt very disappointed and upset, because she thought her lunch must be ordinary as usual. She admired her cousin very much and wanted to live in aunt’s house, where she could eat her favourite chocolate.
During lunch time, she opened the box unwillingly. When she opened her lunch box, she saw a heart-shaped chocolate surprisingly. She blushed to admit it, but she bitterly regretted her mood and attitude to her mummy. At that time, she realized even though her mother was suffering economic hardship and her family was short of money, her mother tried her best to offer all the best things to her. She said sorry to her mummy in her mind.
