As soon as I said it, I knew it sounded crazy. “I’ll write letters to cheer you up through your treatment.” Not only had I said I’d write, but I’d also said they’d cheer him up. So they’d have to be funny, and what is funny about cancer?
Over the next couple of weeks, I tried to forget my offer of letter writing and hoped Brian had too. But a small voice kept saying: “He’s got cancer and all you have to do is write a letter.” So I finally sat down and put pen to paper. My letter was very everyday: accounts of things I’d observed that I thought might make Brian smile.
That letter turned out to be the first of more than 100 that I wrote to Brian over the next three years during which he underwent his treatment. As the months passed, and my letters kept on coming, Brian shared what my letters meant to him. He had been shocked by how isolated he felt. He was no longer at work and rarely saw friends, so his social life was almost nonexistent. He said my letters kept him connected to a world he felt increasingly disconnected from. But even more unexpected was how much I came to enjoy writing. I had never been a writer, but I became excited, not just for Brian’s reaction, but the whole process. Letter writing gave me a sense of accomplishment.
Brian was given the all-clear in 2013. My newly discovered love of pen and paper led me to a degree in creative writing and the confidence to leave my City job and take on a role in a literary (文学的) organization. But that still wasn’t quite enough. Brian and I wanted others to benefit from letters in the same way he had. So, in 2016, we set up the charity From Me to You to educate and inspire everyone who knows someone living with cancer to stay connected by sending a letter or card. My excitable letter offer has now led to thousands of letters connecting friends, family and even strangers. Maybe my offer was not so wild after all.
41. Why did the author hesitate to write letters to Brian at first?
A. She didn’t know what to write about. B. She felt uncomfortable discussing cancer,
C. She thought it wouldn’t make a difference. D. She didn’t have the patience to write letters.
42. How did Brian feel after receiving the author’s letters?
A. He longed for his pre-cancer social life. B. He got annoyed by endless treatments.
C. He was inspired to try creative writing. D. He felt less isolated and disconnected.
43. What was the unexpected result of the author’s letter writing?
A. She became a successful writer. B. She started a literary organization.
C. She gained a sense of achievement. D. She discovered her talent for writing.
44. Why did the author and Brian establish the charity From Me to You?
A. To raise awareness about cancer treatments. B. To encourage cancer patients to write letters.
C. To offer financial support for cancer patients. D. To help other cancer patients feel connected.
45. Which of the following is the most proper title for the passage?
A. Connected Through Letters B. Brian’s Long Battle with Cancer
C. My Journey to Becoming a Writer D. The Birth of the Charity From Me to You

From social relationships to work challenges, Chinese people are turning to DeepSeek to solve different personal issues. They describe sharing their thoughts and receiving helpful feedback from the popular chatbot. As a rising trend on social media, AI therapy (疗法) is changing the way people seek mental health support. But can AI truly replace a human therapist?
Globally, 45 percent of people who needed mental health care in 2024 did not receive it, with barriers including cost and a lack of providers, according to Huntington Psychological Services. Daniel Lowd, an associate professor at the University of Oregon, believes AI could help solve the lack of therapy services. “If people can find some support and opinions by talking to DeepSeek, then I think that’s wonderful,” Lowd told Newsweek.
Li Yong, a doctor at the Jiangsu Province Hospital, agreed with Lowd, saying that AI meets people’s needs for emotional support to some extent. By using basic knowledge of psychotherapy, DeepSeek can help with minor mental issues through comforting responses, Li told Shanghai observer.
However, he points out that AI cannot completely replace professionals due to the human touch that is important for therapeutic services. Therapists develop a deeper understanding of people’s emotions and needs through communication, which allows them to offer more personalized treatment plans, Shanghai Observer reported.
The use of AI in psychotherapy also raises concerns over the reliability (可靠性) of responses. “AI chatbots will respond as therapists if asked, without any of the oversight (监督), training or responsibility of a human counselor (顾问) or even a professional and tested piece of software,” Richard Lachman, an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, told Newsweek.
Experts believe the key to effective AI therapy lies in proper government regulation. Wysa, for example, is a mental health app that offers therapeutic conversations with an AI chatbot. In 2022, it worked with the UK’s National Health Service, following a list of strict standards. As AI becomes more a part of our lives, understanding its effects on human psychology means finding a balance between what’s helpful and what’s dangerous, Euro News reported.
46. What is Daniel Lowd’s attitude toward AI therapy?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Uncertain.
47. Why does Li Yong believe AI can’t fully replace human therapists?
A. AI is unreliable. B. AI lacks emotional depth.
C. AI is unable to take responsibility. D. AI knows little about psychotherapy.
48. What worries Richard Lachman about AI chatbots in psychotherapy?
A. AI chatbots are too hard for patients to use.
B. AI chatbots can’t answer patients’ questions.
C. AI chatbots don’t have proper oversight or training.
D. AI chatbots are not professional and tested piece of softwares.
49. What do experts suggest to make AI therapy effective?
A. Asking health services to work with the UK’s National Health Service.
B. Letting AI mental health tools follow strict standards like Wysa.
C. Stopping the use of AI in mental health care completely.
D. Having proper government regulation on AI therapy.
50. What is this passage mainly about?
A. AI therapy is not useful for people who need mental health care.
B. All experts think AI offers good emotional support for mental health issues.
C. DeepSeek is a popular way for Chinese people to solve personal mental issues.
D. AI therapy can help with mental health, but it can’t take the place of a real person.

How quickly could an 18-year-old find the problem of a car and solve it? Pretty fast, as it turns out. As a student from Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region, Arfanjan Osmanjan recently won the first prize in an Anhui provincial vocational (职业的) students skills competition.
His natural talent and training in diagnostics (诊断学) at the vocational school in Hefei, capital of Anhui province, mean Arfanjan seldom fails to find and solve the problems presented to him. “I value the opportunity to study very much and dream of being the best automotive air conditioning maintenance technician (维修技师) through three years of study here, so I often stay up late to practise.” he said. Arfanjan entered the school in 2014 through an educational program that offers students in Xinjiang opportunities to study in inland provinces.
His father has also been a vehicle maintenance technician in Urumqi for some years. The son had dreamed of becoming a dancer, but his father persuaded him to study vehicle maintenance, which he saw as a more practical career choice. He quickly became interested. “Solving problems and fixing cars is amazing,” Arfanjan said. “My father was only able to repair the VW (Volkswagen) Santanas, while I want to be good with as many car brands as possible.”
Teachers at the school of 4,000 students said, “Arfanjan is one of the best students among the 300 Xinjiang students studying there. I’m deeply impressed how hard he works and his positive attitude towards challenges.” The school started to accept Xinjiang students in 2011, and the school covers the cost.
“With the skills learned here, it will not be a tough call to find a job in my hometown,” he said. But Arfanjan decided to stay in Hefei for some years. “Anhui province is much more developed than my hometown, and I want to learn more here so that I can get a better career in Xinjiang in the future.”

【答案】Dear Mr. Zhang,
Since I started high school two months ago, I’ve been meaning to express my gratitude for your support.
When I first entered high school, I struggled with the complex math problems. One day, I was stuck on a particularly difficult question. You noticed my frustration, came over, and patiently explained the solution step by step. Your clear explanation not only made me understand that problem but also gave me the confidence to face other math challenges.
This incident has had a profound impact on my high-school life. It made me realize that as long as I am willing to ask for help, difficulties can be overcome. From then on, I became more positive in learning math.
In the future, I will keep a positive attitude towards study. I’ll also reach out to others if they need help, just as you did for me.
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin
