For the first time, TIME Magazine has shone a spotlight on great girls making an impact in the world by starting its Girls of the Year list. Created in partnership with LEGO, the list shows 10 excellent girls, from athletes to artists to innovators. And one such innovator is 13-year-old Rebecca Young. The Scottish teen was placed on the list for her incredible solar-heated blanket, which was created to help the unhoused when temperatures drop.
Remarkably, Young began her project when she was just 11 years old, after a school club asked its members to come up with an idea that would help people. As she would often see people experiencing homelessness in her hometown of Glasgow, she decided to focus on making their lives better with her project.
Her first drawings show the basic design of the blanket, which includes flexible solar panels The end product, which folds into a backpack, ultimately got her a win at a UK-wide engineering competition with over 75,000 people taking part in it. Thaler, the engineering company that funded the contest (竞赛), helped Young improve the design and produce 35 blankets that were given away to members of Glasgow’s population of unhoused people.
Now, with plans to create 115 more blankets and the international spotlight, the sky is the limit for Young. She doesn’t intend to pursue engineering — she’s more into music — but hopes that her project will show other young women that they can turn their ideas into reality.
Other competitors in TIME’s Girls of the Year list are equally impressive. They include 17-year-old Defne Özcan, who broke records at age 16 when she became the youngest Turkish person to fly solo, and 12-year-old Naomi S. DeBerry, from New Orleans, who published her book, My Daddy Needs a Gift, in 2024. Based on her own experience of having a father in need of a kidney(肾) transplant, it helps children of all ages understand organ donation.
24. What inspired Rebecca Young to create the solar-heated blanket?
A. Her passion for engineering.
B. The request from a school club.
C. The homeless people in Glasgow.
D. The need for warm blankets in winter.
25. What can we infer about Rebecca Young from the passage?
A. Her desired job is to be an engineer.
B. Her project has caught global attention.
C. She values helping others over her interest.
D. She won an engineering competition easily.
26. What does the underlined sentence “the sky is the limit for Young” imply?
A. Young’s project has its limitation.
B. Young has great potential ahead.
C. Young’s success depends on her nature.
D. Young will focus on space-related projects.
27. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce TIME’s Girls of the Year list.
B. To explain how solar-heated blankets work.
C. To share stories of successful young girls.
D. To encourage young people to pursue engineering.
C
Gestures are older than spoken language and they support our words. Imagine life without being able to point. We do it all the time — in a pastry shop, to signal that you want the croissant without the burnt edges, or to indicate to your host at a dinner party how much wine you want. Think about the forefinger raised over your thumb. A larger gap indicates more wine.
Some gestures have a rich history and have lasted a long time. But in a sign of the times, for younger people, and specifically Generation Z, some of our most well-known hand gestures have changed. Common hand signals, such as writing in the air to get the bill in a restaurant, or the tap on the arm to ask the time, are at risk of dying out. Contactless payment systems and electronic billing systems have made checkbooks unnecessary, and many young people increasingly use their cell phones, rather than a watch, to tell the time.
Consider the UK. As of 2024, research shows that 99% of young people between the ages of 16 and 24 own a smartphone. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the hand signal for the “old-fashioned” landline phone is becoming unusual, since gestures that are specific to particular devices are likely to only be recognized by those who are familiar with such devices. In a TikTok video, New Yorker Daniel Alvarado commented, “This is how you know you’re getting old.” He showed how his children, when asked to gesture “phone me”, instead of holding a hand to their ear with their little finger and thumb stretched, each child held a flat palm to the side of their face to indicate a cell or mobile phone.
Our technological innovations will influence what remains and what dies in terms of our most common hand gestures. Like a flowing river, into which no one can step twice, history moves on, too. And like our language, our gestures change too, a reflection of the signs of our times.
28. What does the author imply by introducing daily communication with gestures?
A. The limitations of language.
B. The helpful role of gestures.
C. The cultural origins of gestures.
D. The significance of proper behavior.
29. What does the video of Daniel Alvarado mainly show?
A. Children are more open to new things.
B. Some gestures are difficult to remember.
C. Some gestures are generationally specific.
D. Children are overdependent on smartphones.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Technological progress has no end.
B. The variation of gestures is unavoidable.
C. Older gestures carry more cultural values.
D. Human development is full of ups and downs.
31. What is a suitable title of the text?
A. Technology is changing our gestures
B. Hand gestures are winning new users
C. Gestures reflect characteristics of society
D. Technology reshapes our communication methods
D
Recently I was asked, “Is there a song that has changed you?” Well, as a music therapist (治疗专家), I work a lot with songs. Songs, and music in general, are a great tool to help people manage emotional problems. I have shared many songs with people who are suffering or hurting. However, the song that stands out the most to me is Let It Be.
Two years ago, I finally got to see Paul McCartney, live, in concert. At about 80 years old, Sir Paul performed nonstop for three hours. And he sounded great. As a music therapist, I use the Beatles’ songs more than just about anything else. Their songs are emotionally layered and timeless. So many of their songs are perfect as a vehicle for emotional expression and an outlet for those reflecting on life and death.
Toward the end of the concert, Paul sat down at the piano and sang Let It Be. Everyone around me was singing and smiling. At that moment, a sudden wave of almost uncontrollable and unexpected emotions washed over me. I was suddenly thinking about life — my life, the people in my life, and... music. I was thinking about all the patients I’ve worked with and the music that we’ve shared — music that helped bring some comfort when they were hurting the most. Let It Be fits so perfectly with those who are struggling to come to terms with acceptance and are preparing for what comes next. Those coming to terms with having to, well... finally let it be.
Now, every time I hear this song or sing this song, I feel lucky. Lucky that I was able to bring music to so many who needed something… to help with resolve, to help with comfort, to help them prepare to finally let it be. And I feel lucky that I get to be a part of the true healing (治愈) power of music for so many who need it the most. Including me.
32. Why are the Beatles’ songs of great significance to the author?
A. They reflect deep emotions.
B. They sound sweet in live concerts.
C. They are popular among her patients.
D. They bring out the passion in old people.
33. What did Paul’s Let It Be remind the author of?
A. Her sufferings in life.
B. Her meeting with Paul.
C. Music’s impact on her work.
D. Music’s function in daily life.
34. What emotion does the author associate with Let It Be currently?
A. Sadness. B. Calmness. C. Confusion. D. Appreciation.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To recommend her favorite song.
B. To highlight a song’s healing power.
C. To recall her experience in a concert.
D. To praise Paul’s great musical talent.

After hours of cooking and arranging the table, your goal is simple: to create an unforgettable dining experience for your guests. But success isn’t just about fresh ingredients or cooking skills. 36
Colour’s influence starts with the first glance. 37 The brain processes colour information and links it to taste, making us judge the same dish as delicious, average, or unappealing. So, making the food visually attractive is key, as guests will assume it tastes as good as it looks.
For picky eaters, bowl colour is crucial. 38 They often find meals in red or blue bowls saltier than in white ones. A red bowl can also make them hesitant to try new dishes, and they might even refuse food if the bowl’s colour doesn’t suit them. Choosing the right tableware colour is top priority here.
White plates are usually a safe choice, but avoid them with pale foods, which will look tasteless. They work well with vibrant dishes like salads or roasted meats, making the food’s colours stand out. For desserts, white plates enhance sweetness and flavor intensity.
39 Black plates, for example, can make food seem saltier and larger in portion. This means dark tableware needs careful consideration of the dish’s flavor and portion size. On the contrary, bright plates add creativity and highlight less colorful foods but can go wrong. 40 matching the plate’s colour too closely to the food can make portions seem smaller, as everything blends.
Understanding colour psychology lets you turn a simple meal into a memorable experience — all through smart tableware choices. It allows you to guide your guests’ perceptions subtly, ensuring that each dish not only tastes wonderful but also feels perfectly suited to the moment.
A. Dark plates have more varied effects.
B. They prefer simple tableware without any patterns.
C. The wrong bright shade makes food look artificial.
D. That initial visual impression brings about a chain reaction.
E. Using the wrong colour can ruin the overall dining mood.
F. Their reactions to tableware colours are often more sensitive.
G. The colour of tableware like plates, shapes how guests feel about the food.

One year ago, when we were in the fifth grade, a new classmate named Jack joined us. One day, a boy knocked his backpack and many crushed soda cans and empty drink bottles that we usually throw into the dustbin fell out. Therefore, the boys in our class mocked him as the “trash king”.
Later, during a class meeting, our teacher, Ms. Green, told us about his story of using garbage to make inventions. It turned out that Jack was not an ordinary elementary school student, but a “garbage-inspired inventor” who had won the city invention award. According to Ms. Green, most of his inventions were picked up from garbage dumps. During that class meeting, Jack showed us his invention of a “domestic wastewater separation system”.
Afterwards, some of us became deeply interested in these small inventions and started to admire Jack’s way of “picking up trash”. We even joined him in picking up trash on weekends and during holidays. From then on, we no longer called him the “trash king”. Instead, we formed a group of five boys and actively searched for usable materials in various garbage dumps around the city. Under Jack’s guidance, we learned that there are many uses for seemingly useless trash. Once, we stayed at school to process the collected materials. Jack mentioned that he was facing a problem with his latest invention — a small cart for buying vegetables that needed to be lightweight. All other materials were solved except for the wheels. How could we find a suitable material for the wheels? We racked our brains and came up with different ideas, for example, taking off the wheels from suitcases. However, Jack reminded us that our group should focus on making inventions from waste rather than causing damage to create them. We were all deep in thought.

C 25. B 26. B 27. A

根据第二段“Remarkably, Young began her project when she was just 11 years old, after a school club asked its members to come up with an idea that would help people. As she would often see people experiencing homelessness in her hometown of Glasgow, she decided to focus on making their lives better with her project.(令人惊讶的是,杨在年仅11岁时就开始了她的项目。当时,学校的一个社团要求成员们提出一个能帮助他人的想法。由于她在家乡格拉斯哥经常能看到无家可归的人,所以她决定通过自己的项目来改善他们的生活)”可知,格拉斯哥的无家可归者是其创作的直接灵感来源。故选C。
25. 推理判断题。根据第四段“Now, with plans to create 115 more blankets and the international spotlight(如今,她计划再制作115条毯子,并且还获得了国际媒体的关注)”可知,Rebecca的项目已获得国际关注。故选B。
根据划线词上文“Now, with plans to create 115 more blankets and the international spotlight(如今,她计划再制作115条毯子,并且还获得了国际媒体的关注)”以及后文“She doesn’t intend to pursue engineering — she’s more into music — but hopes that her project will show other young women that they can turn their ideas into reality.(她并不打算从事工程行业——她更喜欢音乐——但她希望自己的项目能向其他年轻女性证明,她们能够将自己的想法变为现实)”可知,前文提到“国际关注”和“计划再制作115条毯子”的背景,以及后文则提到了对项目的未来看法,推测“the sky is the limit”字面意为“天空是极限”,引申为“潜力无限”。
For the first time, TIME Magazine has shone a spotlight on great girls making an impact in the world by starting its Girls of the Year list.
B 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据第一段中的“Gestures are older than spoken language and they support our words. Imagine life without being able to point. We do it all the time — in a pastry shop, to signal that you want the croissant without the burnt edges, or to indicate to your host at a dinner party how much wine you want. Think about the forefinger raised over your thumb.
根据第三段中的“In a TikTok video, New Yorker Daniel Alvarado commented, “This is how you know you’re getting old.” He showed how his children, when asked to gesture “phone me”, instead of holding a hand to their ear with their little finger and thumb stretched, each child held a flat palm to the side of their face to indicate a cell or mobile phone.(在一段TikTok视频中,纽约人丹尼尔·阿尔瓦拉多评论道:“这就是你知道自己在变老的原因。”他展示了当被要求做出“给我打电话”的手势时,他的孩子们并没有伸出小指和拇指、将手举到耳边,而是每人将平摊的手掌放在脸侧,示意手机。)”可知,视频中老一辈的“固定电话手势”与孩子们的“手机手势”形成对比,主要表明一些手势具有代际特异性,不同年代的人因熟悉的设备不同而使用不同手势。故选C项。
30. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Our technological innovations will influence what remains and what dies in terms of our most common hand gestures. Like a flowing river, into which no one can step twice, history moves on, too. And like our language, our gestures change too, a reflection of the signs of our times.(我们的技术革新将影响我们最常用的手势中哪些会保留、哪些会消失。就像一条奔流不息的河流,没有人能两次踏入同一条河,历史也在不断前进。而像我们的语言一样,我们的手势也在变化,这是我们时代特征的反映。)”可知,作者将历史和手势的变化比作不可重复的河流,说明手势会随着技术和时代发展而变化,这种变化是不可避免的。故选B项。
31. 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“Contactless payment systems and electronic billing systems have made checkbooks unnecessary, and many young people increasingly use their cell phones, rather than a watch, to tell the time.(非接触式支付系统和电子账单系统使支票簿变得多余,许多年轻人越来越多地使用手机而不是手表来查看时间。)”以及最后一段中的“Our technological innovations will influence what remains and what dies in terms of our most common hand gestures.(我们的技术革新将影响我们最常用的手势中哪些会保留、哪些会消失。)” 故选A项。
A 33. C 34. D 35. B

G 37. D 38. F 39. A 40. C
36. 根据上文“But success isn’t just about fresh ingredients or cooking skills. (但成功不仅仅取决于新鲜的食材或烹饪技巧。)”以及下文“Colour’s influence starts with the first glance. (颜色的影响从第一眼就开始了。)”可知,上文说用餐体验不仅仅取决于新鲜的食材或烹饪技巧,下文则提到了颜色。G选项“The colour of tableware like plates, shapes how guests feel about the food. (盘子等餐具的颜色会影响客人对食物的感受。)”承接上文“成功的用餐体验不止于食材和厨艺”,引出下文“颜色的影响”,“The colour of tableware”与下文“Colour’s influence”直接呼应,明确了文章核心话题 —— 餐具颜色的重要性。故选G项。
37. 根据上文“Colour’s influence starts with the first glance. (颜色的影响始于第一眼。)”以及下文“The brain processes colour information and links it to taste, making us judge the same dish as delicious, average, or unappealing. (大脑处理颜色信息并将其与味道关联,让我们判断同一道菜是美味、普通还是令人反感。)”可知,此处应描述第一眼看到食物颜色后的一系列反应,D选项“That initial visual impression brings about a chain reaction. (这种最初的视觉印象会引发连锁反应。)”中的“initial visual impression”与上文的“first glance”相呼应,“a chain reaction”则引出下文大脑对颜色信息的处理和判断。故选D项。
38. 根据上文“For picky eaters, bowl colour is crucial. (对于挑食的人来说,碗的颜色至关重要。)”以及下文“They often find meals in red or blue bowls saltier than in white ones. (他们经常发现放在红色或蓝色碗里的饭菜比放在白色碗里的更咸。)”可知,此处应描述挑食者对餐具颜色的敏感反应,F选项“Their reactions to tableware colours are often more sensitive. (他们对餐具颜色的反应往往更敏感。)”解释了“碗的颜色对挑食者至关重要”的原因,即敏感度更高,“Their”指代“picky eaters”,“more sensitive”与下文具体的颜色反应相呼应,逻辑连贯。故选F项。
39. 根据下文“Black plates, for example, can make food seem saltier and larger in portion. This means dark tableware needs careful consideration of the dish’s flavor and portion size. (例如,黑色盘子会让食物看起来更咸、分量更大。这意味着深色餐具需要仔细考虑菜品的味道和分量。)”可知,此处应描述深色盘子对食物感受的影响,A选项“Dark plates have more varied effects. (深色盘子有更多样化的效果。)”是对下文内容的概括,“Dark plates”对应下文 “Black plates”“dark tableware”,“more varied effects”点明深色餐具的特点,引出下文具体举例说明,适合作为段落首句。故选A项。
40. 根据上文“On the contrary, bright plates add creativity and highlight less colorful foods but can go wrong. (相反,亮色盘子能增添创意,突出颜色较淡的食物,但也可能出错。)”以及下文“matching the plate’s colour too closely to the food can make portions seem smaller, as everything blends.

Li Hua
【答案】Version 1(选择 “Historical Figures of Great Achievements”)
Dear Brown,
I truly appreciate the proposal to introduce a new column in our English newspaper. After careful consideration, I strongly support “Historical Figures of Great Achievements” over the technology-focused alternative.
History is filled with extraordinary individuals whose contributions shaped our world. Figures like Marie Curie, who revolutionized science with her work on radioactivity, and Tu Youyou, whose discovery of artemisinin saved countless lives, demonstrate how dedication and intelligence drive progress. Their stories are not just about the past—they teach timeless lessons in perseverance, creativity, and ethical responsibility.
I believe this column would engage students by blending education with inspiration, fostering a deeper appreciation for the people who changed the course of humanity.
Yours,
Li Hua
Version 2 (选择 “Embracing the Development of New Technologies”)
Dear Brown,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. Between the two options, I strongly support “Embracing the Development of New Technologies”.
Technology is transforming our world at an unprecedented pace. Innovations like AI, renewable energy, and space exploration redefine how we live and work. This column could highlight breakthroughs—such as AI-assisted healthcare or sustainable energy solutions—helping students grasp their impact. It would not only satisfy our curiosity about the future but also inspire careers in STEM fields.
While historical figures are inspiring, understanding cutting-edge technologies prepares us for tomorrow’s challenges. I believe this topic will resonate with tech-savvy peers.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
When I got home and drank a bottle of water, I suddenly had an idea.

Jack indeed adopted my suggestion and fixed a row of bottle caps as wheels on his vegetable cart.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
When I got home and drank a bottle of water, I suddenly had an idea. What if we use bottle caps as wheels for Jack’s vegetable cart? It seemed like a simple solution, but it could work if we found enough bottle caps. Excited, I shared my idea with the group the next day. Jack’s eyes lit up with enthusiasm as he realized the potential of this suggestion. We immediately set out to collect as many bottle caps as we could find, not only searching the garbage dumps but also asking friends and family to save them for us.
Jack indeed adopted my suggestion and fixed a row of bottle caps as wheels on his vegetable cart. It was a moment of triumph for all of us when we saw our collective efforts and creativity come to fruition. The cart rolled smoothly, and we celebrated our success with high fives and laughter. This experience taught us the power of cooperation, innovation, and looking beyond the surface of things. Inspired by Jack’s ingenuity, our group continued to explore ways to repurpose waste, knowing that small actions could lead to big changes.

Version 1(选择 “Historical Figures of Great Achievements”)
Dear Brown,
I truly appreciate the proposal to introduce a new column in our English newspaper.
Yours,
Li Hua
