My daughter is a smart kid. But she never read books for pleasure.
When I faced this truth a few months ago, it felt like a parenting failure. Certainly, my daughter’s having landed a smartphone last year is part of the problem. I could see that what my daughter was looking for, like so many her age, was escape. To me, that felt developmentally appropriate. The problem was that the easiest way for her to find escape was to dive into the addictive chaos of her smartphone.
So I campaigned. I told her she needed to read because novels are the best way to learn about how people’s insides work. She said she could learn more from watching the people she followed on social media, who were all about spilling their insides.
I could not win our debates, I realized, because few of my daughters’ arguments against reading seemed wrong to me. Yes, reading is a way to broaden your universe and discover new worlds—but so is the entire internet.
So I decided to cut through all the reasoning with a cold, hard practicality: cash. I told my 12-year-old I would pay her $100 if she finished the book I picked for her within a month.
We then embarked on a beach holiday. And before the seventh day was done, my daughter had finished the book. When we got back home, she asked for the sequel, and then finished it in about two weeks—at no extra charge.
It actually worked! But will this lead to her reading “Little Women”? To tearing through “Catcher in the Rye” and “White Teeth”? Will it result in a long reading life full of night-stand piles of books?
I don’t know. What I do know is that together, we finally opened a new door for her to the printed page: a quiet personal place that I imagine—I hope—will serve her for a lifetime. That feels like the best money I ever spent.
4. How did the author feel about her daughter’s attachment to smartphones?
A. She found it an ideal escape.
B. She considered it to be her fault.
C. She regarded it as understandable.
D. She blamed it on her daughter’s peers.
5. Why did the author give up trying to persuade her daughter?
A. Novels failed to reflect real life.
B. Her daughter dismissed people’s insides.
C. The internet offered broader experiences.
D. Her daughter’s arguments made some sense.
6. What does the underlined word “sequel” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Plan. B. Reward. C. Warm-up. D. Follow-up.
7. Why does the author mention “Little Women” and other books in paragraph 7?
A. To present her plan. B. To voice her concern.
C. To show her delight. D. To justify her strategy.

The global shipping industry is alone responsible for three percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions (排放)humans produce. If left unaddressed, in a few decades, it will account for over 10 percent of the total man-made emissions.
A new study from MIT researchers reveals a practical solution to this problem. The study authors have developed an emission-free approach to produce hydrogen (H₂) fuel, which generates only water when burned, for commercial ships. They also claim they can make hydrogen fuel using easily accessible resources.
This isn’t the first study proposing the use of aluminum (a silver-gray metal that soda cans are made from) for producing hydrogen fuel. It’s already well known that when aluminum and water react, hydrogen is formed as one of the byproducts. Such chemical reactions, however, come with a sort of a dilemma: It only works when aluminum is used in its pure state. The moment aluminum meets with oxygen, such as in air, its surface immediately forms a protective layer that prevents further reactions.
During their study, the researchers turned recycled soda cans into small aluminum balls. They pretreated the aluminum balls with a rare-metal alloy (合金) that effectively purifies aluminum, making it into a pure form that can react with seawater to generate hydrogen. The salt ions (离子) in the seawater can in turn attract and recover the alloy, which can be reused to generate more hydrogen. The team found that this reaction successfully produced hydrogen gas, though slowly.
They experimented with different chemicals including the ones that are typically found in kitchens and realized that adding coffee made a difference. “A low concentration of caffeine is enough to produce the same amount of hydrogen in just five minutes, compared to two hours without it,” the study authors note. “The next part is to figure out how to use this for trucks, trains, and maybe airplanes,” Aly Kombargi, lead study author, said.
8. How can the MIT researchers contribute to the shipping industry?
A. By providing a clean energy source.
B. By developing new fuel storage methods.
C. By improving fuel efficiency in existing ships.
D. By planning more convenient shipping routes
9. What is the challenge when making hydrogen from aluminum?
A. Hydrogen is too expensive to make. B. The chemical reaction happens too slow.
C. Aluminum easily reacts with oxygen. D. The metal surface prevents further reactions.
10. What can be inferred about the MIT researchers’ hydrogen generation process?
A. It requires large quantities of alloy.
B. It produces significant waste chemicals.
C. It creates hydrogen in a sustainable cycle.
D. It generates hydrogen with low purity.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Hydrogen Fuel: A Game Changer of Transportation
B. Cans+ Seawater+ Coffee: A Greener Shipping Future
C. Coffee: The Secret Substance for Clean Shipping Fuel
D. Aluminum: A Pioneering Material for Hydrogen Produce
D
The newest hottest power couple doesn’t live in Hollywood. It’s actually the marriage of solar panels and reservoirs (水库): Known as floatovoltaics, these devices on simple floats (浮体) generate power while shading the water below.
The primary advantage of the technology is that no trees need to be cleared for solar farms. As an added bonus, the water cools the panels, increasing their efficiency. Research shows that floatovoltaics on just a small share of global lakes and reservoirs could meet nearly a third of the US’s annual electricity demand.
As floatovoltaic systems expand, with the market expected to grow 23% annually from 2025 to 2030, scientists are studying their impact on ecosystems. “We shouldn’t be expanding clean energy at the cost of biodiversity loss,” warns Elisa Stephens, a researcher at the University of California, Davis. “This is a great opportunity to increase our research and develop smart designs and better sitting practices to have this happy marriage between a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem and renewable energy expansion.”
Most floatovoltaics are placed on reservoirs. When paired with the existing water power plants, the panels can generate additional daytime power. This combination can make up for seasonal drops in water or sunlight, ensuring a more stable yearly output.
Though artificial, reservoirs host lots of water life that floatovoltaics can interact with. Would this bring risks or benefits? “Our customers have seen migrating (迁徙的) birds feeding and resting on the floats,” reports Chris Bachman of a leading floatovoltaics company.
Ecological considerations get trickier where there are unforeseen knock- on effects. Experiments show that shading from panels can slow the growth of algae that fish eat and also reduce harmful algae, affecting the food chain. Floats can hide fish from birds that hunt them but may also serve as safe habitats for these birds. “We need to monitor for long periods to understand the big picture,” says freshwater ecologist Simpson Cardoso.
Scientists and companies are discussing wider spacing between panels and avoiding construction during waterbirds’ sensitive periods, such as migration and nesting. “There can definitely be that kind of ecological balance,” says Stephens.
12. How does the author introduce floatovoltaics?
A. By giving a technical definition. B. By explaining how they work.
C. By relating them to a married couple. D. By describing a popular movie scene.
13. What is scientists’ major concern about floatovoltaics?
A. Their influence on ecosystems and biodiversity. B. Their seasonal changes in power output.
C. Their high cost of construction and maintenance. D. Their competition against traditional solar farms.
14. Why does the author quote Chris Bachman in paragraph 5?
A. To provide evidence of customer satisfaction. B. To show a potential benefit of floatovoltaics.
C. To note the complexity of ecological interactions. D. To draw attention to protecting migrating birds.
15 What are scientists focusing on?
A. Conducting the application of wider panels. B. Developing smarter designs and practices.
C. Proving the existence of ecological balance. D. Avoiding constructions on waterbird habitats.

My daughter is a smart kid. But she never read books for pleasure.
When I faced this truth a few months ago it felt like a parenting failure.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. D 7. B

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“I could see that what my daughter was looking for, like so many her age, was escape. To me, that felt developmentally appropriate. The problem was that the easiest way for her to find escape was to dive into the addictive chaos of her smartphone.(我看得出,和许多同龄孩子一样,女儿在寻找一种逃避方式。在我看来,这在成长过程中是合理的。问题在于,她找到逃避的最便捷方式是沉浸在智能手机令人上瘾的繁杂内容中)”可知,作者认为女儿对智能手机的依赖是同龄人寻求逃避的常见表现,具有成长阶段的合理性,虽存在问题但可以理解。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“I could not win our debates, I realized, because few of my daughters’ arguments against reading seemed wrong to me. Yes, reading is a way to broaden your universe and discover new worlds—but so is the entire internet.(我意识到,我无法在辩论中胜出,因为女儿反对阅读的论点在我看来几乎没有错误。没错,阅读是拓宽视野、发现新世界的方式——但整个互联网也是如此)”可知,作者放弃说服女儿是因为女儿的论点有理有据,她无法反驳,认为女儿的观点有道理。故选D项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段中的“And before the seventh day was done, my daughter had finished the book. When we got back home, she asked for the sequel, and then finished it in about two weeks—at no extra charge.(第七天结束前,女儿读完了这本书。回到家后,她要了sequel,然后在大约两周内读完——没有额外收费)”结合语境,女儿读完第一本书后主动索要后续内容并继续阅读,可推断“sequel”意为“续集,续篇”,与“Follow-up(后续作品)”含义相近。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据尾段“It actually worked! But will this lead to her reading “Little Women”? To tearing through “Catcher in the Rye” and “White Teeth”? Will it result in a long reading life full of night-stand piles of books?(这确实奏效了!但这会让她去读《小妇人》吗?去通读《麦田里的守望者》和《白牙》吗?这会让她拥有一个床头堆满书籍的长期阅读生活吗?)”可知,作者用三个疑问句表达了对女儿能否通过短期奖励机制养成持续阅读习惯的担忧,不确定当前的方法能否让女儿真正爱上经典书籍并保持阅读热情。因此,提及这些书籍是为了表达她的担忧。故选B项。

【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B

The newest, hottest power couple doesn’t live in Hollywood.
15. What are scientists focusing on?
A. Conducting the application of wider panels. B. Developing smarter designs and practices.
C. Proving the existence of ecological balance. D. Avoiding constructions on waterbird habitats.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. B
