What happened next was exactly a storm.Justin suddenly suffered cardiac arrest (心脏停搏) caused by a hit to the chest, and his heart just stopped. No pulse,no heartbeat. There are only about 10 to 20 cases a year. And it was almost always deadly until recently, when CPR (心肺复苏) has worked in up to one-third of cases. Thankfully, the other children acted immediately instead of freezing in fear.Mike called 911 while my daughter called my husband. That second call proved vitally important,as my husband was able to get in touch with a neighbor who ran over and started CPR.And later, the doctors arrived and quickly shocked Justin's heartbeat rhythm (节奏) back to normal. Since then,I've found myself changed as a parent. There is more worry now. This unexpected incident has made me realize that anything can happen to my children. So,we're doing what we can to be prepared.Earlier this year,Justin took part in a community education event with our fire department teaching Hands-Only CPR to the public. At least 100 participants showed up,and Justin shared his story to show why CPR is so important. At a local university where I work as a nurse lecturer,I've volunteered to join the CPR and AED first aid training for incoming freshmen. David and I feel very fortunate to still have our son with us.If the kids hadn't known to call 911,he wouldn't be here.If our neighbor hadn't known CPR,Justin wouldn't be here.I think everyone should take the time to learn CPR.You could save a life — maybe the life of someone you love.Cardiac arrest often comes without warning.Everything will be normal right up until the point it isn't.You have to know what to do. 4.Why does the author say the incident was a storm? A.Her son played dangerous sports. B.Her son had a close encounter with death. C.Her children made a real mess when playing. D.Her neighbor complained of the children's noise. 5.How did the author feel about the other children's responses? A.Curious. B.Grateful. C.Surprised. D.Puzzled. 6.What did the author and Justin do after the incident? A.They worked as medical workers. B.They shared their stories on speaking tours. C.They trained others in first aid skills. D.They introduced first aid courses to schools. 7.What does the last paragraph mainly highlight? A.The theory behind CPR. B.The ways of ensuring child safety. C.The causes of cardiac arrest. D.The importance of learning first aid. 根据文章第二段“What happened next was exactly a storm.Justin suddenly suffered cardiac arrest(心脏停搏)caused by a hit to the chest, and his heart just stopped. No pulse,no heartbeat.” D。 C About a year and a half ago,Ram Fish founded 19Labs,a Silicon Valley startup he sees as the next step in digital health care. You might describe its main product, named Gale,as the first aid kit of the 21st century. But it's more than that. It's like a mini-clinic. Gale has one drawer (抽屉) containing sensor-based health care tools, including an EKG(心电图仪) and stroke detector,a fingertip oximeter for measuring pulse rate (脉率),a tool for examining inner ear and a digital thermometer (体温计).Data from those sensors can be transmitted to health care professionals.Another drawer is filled with medication and supplies. On top is a pop-up touch screen that presents interactive treatment guides on everything from bites to heart problems. It also can be used for placing video calls to doctors or caregivers. To ensure that a person can stay connected to medical help during a call,Gale also has a built-in 4G phone battery Gale's initial market is health clinics in remote locations—pilot programs are underway in South Dakota and Canada—but Fish sees it as having the potential to become a must in schools, offices, stores, and eventually homes. It's an ambitious goal, but Fish has the qualifications to back up his ambitions.Previously,he was Vice President of Digital Health at Samsung and once led the iPod team at Apple. The technology 19Labs currently uses is the most basic—an otoscope for ear exams,a pulse oximeter,a blood pressure device. But what's more exciting are the things that are coming up.They are working with a startup that is working on a device that will be able to do basic blood lipid(血脂)testing,so within a minute you'll be able to get a whole lipid analysis done on your blood. 19Labs sees itself as a real way forward in health care because it brings everything together to create a compelling product. 8.Which is the right description of Gale? It's a move that has been increasingly important,as hearing loss is expected to rise sharply in the coming ten years. The World Health Organization warns that by 2030,nearly 630 million people worldwide will suffer from hearing loss.By 2050,that could jump to 900 million. The act comes with some limitations.Devices for severe (重度的) hearing loss and those intended for use on children under the age of 18 will still require a prescription (处方).But for the millions who suffer from mild to moderate (轻度到中度的) hearing loss, picking up a hearing aid could be about as easy as picking up a pair of reading glasses at the drugstore. They won't be quite that cheap,of course, but they will likely cost less than today's hearing aids. The FDA estimated the price of those devices could be cut in half once the rule takes effect. “I seriously believe that we will see a significant reduction in prices for consumers with mild to moderate hearing loss,” said Blake Cadwell, founder and CEO of Soundly,a site that allows people to compare and buy hearing aids online.“Expect simple products like the Bose B1 hearing aid to go on sale for $899 and more expensive devices to sell for $1,500.In the long term,we may see even lower prices.” “Hearing loss is an important public health issue that affects the ability of millions of Americans to effectively communicate in their daily life,” said FDA Commissioner Robert M.Califf,MD.“Establishing this new rule will allow people with mild to moderate hearing loss to have convenient access to safe, effective, and affordable hearing aids from their neighborhood store or online.” 12.How does the author support his idea in paragraph 2? A.By providing data. B.By giving examples. C.By stating arguments. D.By making comparisons. 13.What can be inferred about the new rule? A.It limits online sales of hearing aids. B.It requires no prescription for all types of devices. C.It primarily aims to discourage people from using hearing aids. D.It directly benefits people over 18 with mild to moderate hearing loss. 14.What is Blake Cadwell's attitude toward the future price reduction of hearing aids? A.Reserved. B.Confident. C.Uncertain. D.Concerned. 15.Which can be the most suitable title for the text? A.Consumer Enthusiasm: The Rising Demand for Hearing Aids B.Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids: Critics' Warning of the Risks C.Accessibility Concerns: The True Cost of FDA's Hearing Aid Changes D.Affordable Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids: FDA's Game-Changing Move 【语篇解读】 本文是一篇新闻报道。 根据第二段中的“It's a move that has been increasingly important,as hearing loss is expected to rise sharply in the coming ten years.”以及下文中的“The World Health Organization warns that by 2030,nearly 630 million people worldwide will suffer from hearing loss.By 2050,that could jump to 900 million.” 故选A。 13. First aid is an important tool in quickly responding to accidents to ensure that injuries can be efficiently and immediately handled before a trained medical professional arrives.First aid in schools is especially helpful as children often get into accidents that need quick care. 16 Here are some of the benefits coming from having a first aider on site. These kids end up back on the farms anyway. He'll never amount to anything.” My parents and teachers were disappointed with my average marks. My mother envisioned a different future and knew the value of education to create a better life.By the time I entered the 12th grade,I had taken a good look at myself and realized the life I was creating. The bad boy image troubled me.I didn't believe I was a bad boy.I didn't want to be a bad boy. These realizations forced me to acknowledge that my mother was right — education was my only way out.I worked hard to finish my high school, and then I decided to apply for higher education in university. But this village bad boy faced too many challenges. Firstly,my family had very limited money. In addition to that,my grades were not good. There was very little chance I'd gain admission to a university.Still,I took a chance and applied. The last day of admissions,I visited the university to check my result.I looked down the list, and there it was “Parashram J.Patil”.Finally,I'd been admitted. Now,it was the last day to pay,so I had to find money to cover my fees. Helpless,I sat outside the department head—Professor Parth's office. From then on,things changed. Helpless,I sat outside the department head—Professor Parth's office. Head held in my hands,I contained my tears, thinking that my dreams of higher education would finish there.Perhaps my teachers and the whole village were right.“I wouldn't amount to anything.” Seeing me sitting there sad,Professor Parth invited me in.When he heard the situation of mine,Professor Parth remained silent for a while. Then he promised to lend me money to pay the fees, believing I could have a bright future.I felt too grateful to say a word. From then on,things changed. I was able to shake off the bad boy image.Everyone in the university had a purpose.Being in that atmosphere forced me to think bigger.Every time I was stuck in a difficult situation,Professor Parth's encouraging words would echo in my mind.It was his kindness and faith in me that inspired me to go on.He helped a bad village boy turn his life around.Sometimes, kindness may be powerful enough to make a real difference.
