The Campaign Promise
One afternoon in a small town along the Mississippi River, young Tom Sawyer sat on the porch with his friend Huck Finn. They watched a group of people gathering around a politician who was giving a speech.
“My fellow citizens!” the politician shouted loudly, waving his hands. “If I am elected, I will build new roads, cut taxes, and make our town the best place to live in the whole country!” The crowd cheered excitedly, but Tom shook his head.
“I don’t believe a word he says,” Tom told Huck. “Last year, another politician promised to clean the river, but nothing changed. The water is still dirty, and the fish are still gone.”
That evening, Tom had an idea. He made a poster with a drawing of the politician and wrote: “Promises are like bubbles—pretty to look at, but they pop quickly!” He put the poster on the town’s notice board.
The next morning, everyone saw the poster. People laughed and started talking about the politician’s promises. Some even went to ask the politician when he would keep his words. Finally, the politician had to admit that he couldn’t do all the things he promised. He left town quietly, and the people learned a valuable lesson: don’t believe empty promises.
Tom smiled. He knew that humor was the best way to tell the truth—just like Mark Twain always did.

1.原句:If I am elected, I will build new roads, cut taxes, and make our town the best place to live in the whole country!
If I am elected 是条件状语从句(被动语态),主句 I will...country 包含三个并列谓语(build, cut, make),the best place to live 中不定式 to live 作后置定语修饰 place,符合中考重点语法考点。
2.原句:He knew that humor was the best way to tell the truth—just like Mark Twain always did.
分析:主句 He knew 后接宾语从句 that humor...truth;the best way to tell the truth 中不定式作后置定语;破折号后 just like...did 是方式状语从句的省略形式,结构简洁,符合吐温口语化风格。

A Naughty Boy, Tom Sawyer
Tom sighed sadly, looking at the garden fence he needed to paint—for skipping school, Aunt Polly punished him. However, he played some tricks. He swept his brush back and forth, making it special and funny. Ben first showed interest, and even gave his apple in exchange for the job.
Tom sat in the shade, dangled his legs and ate his apple. And there was no lack of material: boys came every little while—to offer to do this appealing job.
When Ben was tired, Billy Fisher got the chance. He said, “I can give you my kite.”
When Billy got tired, Johnny Miller came. He said, “I can give you this dead rat and a string to swing it.”

Aunt Polly went out to see for herself. When she found the fence white-washed, she was astonished. She said, “I must say, you can work when you’re a mind to, Tom. Now go along and play.”
Then he skipped out to play. As he was passing by the house of Jeff, he saw a new girl—a lovely girl with blue eyes and long yellow hair.
He worshiped this new angel with furtive eyes. He stood on his hands and then did a cartwheel to show off. But the girl just went into her house. Her name was Becky and she had just moved into Tom’s village. For the rest of the day, Tom could only think about Becky.

My first name was Philip, but when I was a small child, I could only say Pip. So Pip became my name. I lived in a small village with my sister, who married Joe, the village blacksmith (铁匠). My parents had died years ago, so I often went to visit the churchyard to look at their names on their gravestones (墓碑).
One cold afternoon, I sat on a gravestone in that churchyard, listening to the sound of the sea.
“Don’t say a word!” cried a voice, as a man jumped up and caught me. “If you shout, I’ll kill you!” He was a big man, with an iron chain (铁链) on his leg. He looked tired, and hungry. I had never been so scared in my whole life.
“Oh! Don’t kill me, sir!”
“Tell me your name, boy!” he said, still holding me. “And show me where you live!”
“My name’s Pip, sir. And I live in the village over there.”
He picked me up and turned me upside down. A piece of old bread fell out of my pocket. He ate it like a dog.
“So where are your parents?” he asked.
“There, sir,” I answered, pointing to their graves.
“What!” he cried, and wanted to run, when he saw where I was pointing. “Oh!” he said. “They’re dead. Well, who do you live with?”
“With my sister, sir, wife of the blacksmith.”
“Blacksmith, you say?” And he looked down at his leg. Then he held me and looked down into my eyes.
“Now look here. You bring me a file and some food to me tomorrow morning. If you don’t, or if you tell anyone about me, I’ll cut your heart out.”
“I promise I’ll do it, sir,” my body was shaking.
“You see,” he continued, “I travel with a friend, who likes eating boys’ hearts. Wherever you are, we’ll find you.”
As soon as he turned, I ran home as fast as I could.

During the Jin Dynasty (265—420), there was a child named Che Yin. He was smart and loved to read. He grew up in a poor family and couldn’t afford (买得起) lamp oil to study at night.
One night, he saw fireflies (萤火虫) outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp. It is said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
Another child named Sun Kang also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn’t study at night. When he woke up at midnight, he saw the snow reflecting (反射) the moonlight outside his house. “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” he thought. He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.
Both of these kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hardworking spirit and turned their stories into the Chinese idiom Nangying Yingxue
In 2012, President Xi Jinping told these stories at the Party School of the CPC Central Committee He talked about Nangying Yingxue, Xuanliang Cigu (悬梁刺股) and Zaobi Touguang (凿壁偷光). All of these stories encourage people to study hard no matter what difficulties we meet. Xi hopes that government officials will keep this hardworking spirit in mind.
All of us can learn a lot from these stories. Although they don’t take place in modern times, they are just like the dim (微弱的) light of fireflies—they light up the road to knowledge.
1.What did Sun Kang use to read outside?
2.What did Che Yin and Sun Kang have in common?
3.What can we learn from these stories?
4.Why did President Xi Jinping talk about the stories?
5.What does the underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refer to?
