I used to be good at hiding. My phone was my best protection, helping me hide from the noisy world. At family dinners, I would always disappear into my screen. My world was safe, 1 and digital.
My parents noticed I spent too much time on my phone. To punish me, they 2 my phone and sent me to help my grandfather clean his garage (车库). I thought it would be the most boring weekend of my life.
When I walked into the old garage, I found 3 was filled with forgotten memories. “What’s that?” I asked curiously. 4 one corner of the garage stood a large, dark slate (石板) covered with dust.
Grandpa said, “This used to be my screen. When I was young, my family was too poor to buy toys for me. With no other toys available, this slate became my 5 toy. I drew pictures and practiced writing on it. When the surface was full, I would clean it off and start again. I didn’t have countless apps,” he continued, with his eyes 6 . “But I had endless imagination.” His words touched me deeply. This ordinary object had once been a doorway to his other worlds.
Seeing my interest, Grandpa said, “On this slate, you’re allowed to draw anything you can imagine. Would you like to have a try?” I found a piece of chalk and drew a shaky flower. My hand was moving 7 so that the lines (线条) would not break. At this moment, time seemed to stop. Although the slate 8 hard and cold under my fingers, somehow my heart was full and warm.
9 the slate changed from gray to colorful in our hands, I found a new connection — the one that came from sharing time and laughter with my grandpa. I finally learned that sometimes the most important “ 10 ” is not the one you hold in your hand, but the one you build in your mind.

Have you ever felt too hot at home in summer, even with the air conditioner running? Scientists have made a new kind of paint. It can keep houses cooler without using electricity. Let’s find out more about this wonderful invention!
This special paint is called “cool paint”. Unlike traditional paints that take in sunlight, the cool paint works by sending most of the sun’s light away from your home. It has tiny particles (粒子) inside that are like small mirrors. When sunlight hits the walls or roof, these particles send the heat back into the air instead of letting it enter the house. So, even on the hottest days, your home stays naturally cool!
The key is in the paint’s materials. Traditional paints often come in dark colors that hold heat. But the cool paint uses special colorful powders. These materials are made to reflect (反射) infrared radiation—the part of sunlight that makes things feel hot. Some types of the paint even have a shiny surface, like a thin piece of glass, to help reflect more light.
The cool paint matters for two main reasons. First, when homes stay cool naturally, people use less air conditioning. This lowers electricity bills. Second, using less energy helps fight climate change. The cool paint is to make buildings more “environment-friendly” with lower cost.
You can put the cool paint on any part of a building that gets sunlight, such as roofs (the best place, as roofs get the most direct sun), outdoor walls and even outdoor chairs! Some cities are already testing the cool paint on public buildings like schools and libraries. In hot countries like India and Saudi Arabia, people use it to keep their homes comfortable.
Scientists are still making the cool paint better. Some new kinds can even work at night! They send heat from the building into the sky, making the house cooler after sunset. As more people use the cool paint, it may become a normal part of building design, helping us stay cool and protect the environment at the same time.
Next time you see a house with a light-colored roof or shiny walls, it might be using this smart invention. Who would have thought paint could be so “cool”?
14.Why is the cool paint special?
A.Because it can reflect the heat. B.Because it has small mirrors.
C.Because it can take in sunlight. D.Because it looks really cool.
15.What does the underlined phrase “infrared radiation” probably refer to?
A.A type of heat-carrying light. B.New energy from the moon.
C.A useful thin piece of glass. D.A colorful powder in paint.
16.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To describe how humans waste so much energy.
B.To introduce a creative environmental invention.
C.To compare the cool paint with traditional paints.
D.To encourage companies to buy the new cool paint.
17.Which example shows the use of the cool paint?
A.A company paints the walls with colorful paints.
B.A farmer uses a paint that changes colors with weather.
C.A city paints bus stops with dark blue paint to take in heat.
D.A woman uses shiny paint on her roof to lower temperature.
C
Do you often compare yourself to others? Do you always try to improve yourself just for others’ approval (认可)? If so, you may be having difficulty understanding your self-worth
Self-worth is not about what you look like, what you achieve, or what others think of you. True self-worth comes from within. It means valuing yourself for who you are. When you truly understand your worth, you’ll be proud of being yourself. So, what can you do to develop a strong sense of self-worth?
First, start by acknowledging things you do well. Maybe you always listen to friends and family patiently. Perhaps when facing problems, you always remain calm and try to solve them. No matter how small these things seem, noticing them and valuing them can help you think better of yourself.
Another key step is to accept your weaknesses (不足). You can’t do everything perfectly. When you don’t do a good job, don’t be too hard on yourself. Instead, treat yourself kindly as you would treat a good friend in the same situation. View these weaknesses as chances to grow, not reasons to feel “not good enough”.
Don’t connect your worth to those external factors (外部因素) like someone’s opinion or the result of a project. Base your sense of worth on who you are and what you do, such as your good personality and your hard work.
Remember: Knowing your worth means fully accepting yourself. You are valuable for who you are, and you don’t need others to tell you that.
18.Which of the following questions does paragraph 2 answer?
A.What does true self-worth mean?
B.How does self-worth influence your life?
C.How do you develop a strong sense of self-worth?
D.What stops you from understanding your self-worth?
19.What does the underlined word “acknowledging” mean in English?
A.Forgetting. B.Comparing. C.Recognising. D.Finishing.
20.Alice has a strong sense of self-worth. What will she probably say to herself if she doesn’t get a good score in a maths exam?
A.“No one is sillier than me.”
B.“There must be something wrong with my score.”
C.“I will work hard, and I believe I’ll improve next time.”
D.“No matter how hard I try, maths just isn’t my thing.”
21.What is the best title for the text?
A.Try to be a better person B.Learn to accept your true self
C.Value yourself for who you are D.Explore and achieve your life’s value
【答案】18.A 19.C 20.C 21.C
根据“Self-worth is not about what you look like, what you achieve, or what others think of you. True self-worth comes from within. It means valuing yourself for who you are.”
根据“Maybe you always listen to friends and family patiently. Perhaps when facing problems, you always remain calm and try to solve them. No matter how small these things seem, noticing them and valuing them...”
根据“Another key step is to accept your weaknesses (不足). When you don’t do a good job, don’t be too hard on yourself. Instead, treat yourself kindly as you would treat a good friend in the same situation. View these weaknesses as chances to grow”可知,有强烈自我价值感的人会把不足当作成长的机会,所以爱丽丝数学考试没考好可能会说 “我会努力学习,相信下次会进步”,故选C。
21.最佳标题题。本文主要围绕自我价值展开,强调真正的自我价值来自内心,要重视自身的本质,接受自己,所以“Value yourself for who you are”作为标题最合适,故选C。

Once again the Captain’s will (意愿) won. Silently, the men returned to their posts. But Captain Columbus was worried because he knew in his heart that a day would come when his words would no longer help. Before that day, he would see land.
Not an eye closed that night. The Captain stood on the high poop (舰楼) and with sleepless eyes he tried hard to look into the darkness ahead.
Then, two hours before midnight, the miracle happened. A far-off light struck his eyes. It wavered once or twice, moving quickly on the horizon (地平线), like a fisherman’s boat on the waves.
His heart hammered (砰砰直跳). But he dared not cry out, “Land!”
“Your eyes are sharp, Alfredo,” he whispered to a young sailor. “Tell me what you see.” As he spoke, the light disappeared.
“I see nothing.” The sailor looked into the darkness. The light reappeared.
“Look out!”
“Ah, yes, yes. A light! Over there!”
“Quiet! Are you sure, Alfredo?”
“But yes, Captain! It is gone now, yet I saw it.”
Surely this was not a trick of the light! Alfredo had seen it too. Somewhere ahead in darkness were human beings and inhabited land. They stood shoulder to trembling shoulder, staring into the dark.
Hour after hour passed. The sand-glass under the lantern showed that it was two o’clock in the morning. The other two ships appeared vaguely and in the east the line of the horizon was clearly seen.
Then came a flash of flame (火焰). The long-awaited signal Land in sight.
“Land Land” Almost immediately came the ringing cry. There in the west, green and fair, lay an island.
Who can tell how Christopher Columbus felt at that moment? The long waiting was at an end. The dream had come true.
22.What made Captain Columbus worried?
A.The journey was too long. B.People doubted what he said.
C.There was darkness all around. D.His men were too tired to stay awake.
23.Why dared Columbus not cry out “Land” when he first saw the light?
A.He wanted to wait for the other ships to confirm the light first.
B.He was afraid the light was just a trick of his tired eyes.
C.He did not want to wake up the men who were sleeping.
D.He knew the light would disappear soon.
24.During that night, how did Captain Columbus’s feelings change?
A.Worried→nervous→excited. B.Scared→curious→happy.
C.Afraid→happy→excited. D.Excited→scared→happy.
25.What was Captain Columbus’s dream?
A.Finding human beings in the sea. B.Being saved by other ships.
C.Helping his sailors to get the light. D.Discovering the land on the horizon.
“What do you think I should do?” asks your friend, as she sits beside you, waiting for your advice. This is no easy situation. Say something your friend disagrees with or something helpless, and you might feel you’ve disappointed (使失望) her.
It’s human nature to want to offer solutions (解决方法) when someone comes to you with a problem. It’s also easy to fall into the trap (陷阱) of simply saying that “Everything will be OK”. 26 But we often say that because we believe we need to say something. This is because we’re glad that our friend has come to us for help, even if we don’t really think we’re able to give it. 27 The answer is yes… if it’s done in the right way.
In fact, friends often really only want someone to listen to them. It’s important to try to work out whether they’re actually asking for advice, or simply wanting to talk over whatever is going round in their head. 28 There’s no harm (伤害) in asking whether they’d like you to give suggestions.
It’s also important to be honest. If you’re unable to think of a way to solve your friends’ problem, just say so. Your friends won’t feel upset, and you can still listen carefully and try to put yourself in their shoes. 29 You can ask yourself, “What would I do if I were to experience the same thing?” Later you can go back to your friends with a few helpful suggestions.
30 It can be hard to listen to your friends going over and over the same thing without being able to help them. They will certainly be thankful if you just allow them to “talk it out”, though. Maybe they’re building up courage (勇气) to take action, and need to convince (说服) themselves they’re doing the right thing. Just being there for them may be all you have to do to make things better.
A.Friendship is the most important to us.
B.This is not actually useful for your friend.
C.Then you can go away and try to think of something helpful.
D.You can find someone else to ask for their ideas.
E.Talking may make people feel better all by themselves.
F.Sometimes a problem doesn’t go away overnight.
G.So is it a good idea to try to give advice at all?

One day, he found a butterfly trying to fly outside in his room. It kept flying into the window, always in the same 40 . It thought that was the way out. After some time, it became tired and ended up flying into a spiderweb in the corner of the window.
After seeing it, Tom made up his mind to do something to change his life. So he wrote a list with different titles: play, work and so on. Under them, he wrote down what he didn’t like about each part of his life.

Just like the butterfly, sometimes we just keep going in a wrong way. In fact, we just need to do it differently and change our life step by step.
Have you ever watched a tennis game broadcast (播出) in English? If you have, then you 44 (probable) have noticed that the score “40-0” is read as “Forty to love” instead of “Forty to zero.” 45 neither side scores a point (that is, 0-0), then the score will be “Love-all.”
So how did “love” become a word for “zero” in tennis?
Most people believe this expression 46 (come) from French. It is said that the French use the word “l’oeuf” (it means “the egg”) to mean a score of zero. This is similar to calling a score of zero “a duck’s egg” 47 British English. When tennis was introduced into England from France, Englishmen also called a score of zero “l’oeuf.” However, some tennis fans didn’t know 48 (France). They mispronounced the French word as the English word “love” (the two words are close in pronunciation). Over time, “love” ended up with a new 49 (mean): a score of zero.
This is 50 (popular) explanation for the term’s origin (起源). Unluckily, researchers haven’t yet found proof (证明) that the French people ever used the word “l’oeuf” to mean “zero.” According to 51 (they) studies, the French always call the number “zero.”
Another explanation has been more widely accepted among some researchers. It says this usage came from the expression “to play for love.” Players who fail to score any points don’t care. They play for their love of the game, not just for a wish to win. The researchers have found written records 52 (support) this explanation. But most of 53 records are about card games, rather than tennis. So far, nobody knows for sure how “love” came to mean “zero” in tennis. More studies are needed to solve this puzzle
Dopamine Dressing
Have you seen “dopamine (多巴胺) dressing” on your social media? It’s one of the most popular fashion trends for 2023.
First created by US fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen in her book Dress Your Best Life in 2020, dopamine dressing—to put it simply—is dressing for joy. Through brightness and purity of colors, the dressing is aimed to create joyful emotions for people.
Science showed long ago that different colors can affect people. They could make us feel warmer or cooler and also affect our feelings. For example, bright colors can make people feel lively. Colors like black, white and grey may bring a sense of sadness instead.
Learning how colors work, fashion brands have also used colors in different ways. For example, Versace, an Italian brand, added the idea of dopamine dressing to their clothes in 2021. It said: “This can spread fun and positive energy to the world through fashion.” In the last few years, the pandemic has put everything into question. “Usually, we’re dressing for external factors—the weather, other people and special events. During the pandemic, there was a change. Since no one was around to tell you what to wear, you let yourself find styles that make yourself happy,” Karen told TODAY.
Now, many people take this style to fight back bad feelings and show themselves. “I’ve seen people who are very shy put on colorful clothes and become...free,” Karen said. “Their whole mood changes when they wear clothes that show who they really are.”
54.When did the phrase “dopamine dressing” first appear?
55.What colors should you avoid if you are sad?
56.Do you like the idea of dopamine dressing to clothes? Why?

1.C 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.A 6.A 7.D 8.B 9.B 10.C
took up开始从事;took away拿走,没收;took out取出;took off起飞。根据“My parents noticed I spent too much time on my phone. To punish me,”可知,父母因作者玩手机时间过长而“惩罚”作者,此处应是“没收”手机。故选B。
3.句意:当我走进那间旧车库时,发现里面装满了被遗忘的回忆。
this这个;one一个;it它;them它们。根据上文“When I walked into the old garage,”可知,此处指代前上文提到的“the old garage”,单数可数名词需用代词“it”指代,在宾语从句中作主语。故选C。
In在……里;At在……点;On在……上;With用。根据“one corner of the garage”可知,此处是指“在车库的一个角落”,需用固定搭配“in the corner of”,强调“在……内部的角落”。故选A。
根据“When I was young, my family was too poor to buy toys for me. With no other toys available,”可知,爷爷家太穷,买不起玩具,没有其他玩具可用,因此石板成为唯一的玩具。故选A。
故选A。
Because因为;As随着;Until直到;Although虽然。根据空格后“the slate changed from gray to colorful in our hands”可知,表示“随着”石板在手中从灰色变成彩色,这一过程与“找到新联结”同步发生,体现伴随关系。故选B。

A.He wanted to wait for the other ships to confirm the light first.

C.He did not want to wake up the men who were sleeping.
D.He knew the light would disappear soon.
24.During that night, how did Captain Columbus’s feelings change?
A.Worried→nervous→excited. B.Scared→curious→happy.
C.Afraid→happy→excited. D.Excited→scared→happy.

27.根据“This is because we’re glad that our friend has come to us for help, even if we don’t really think we’re able to give it.”及“The answer is yes… if it’s done in the right way.”
28.根据“In fact, friends often really only want someone to listen to them. It’s important to try to work out whether they’re actually asking for advice, or simply wanting to talk over whatever is going round in their head.”及“There’s no harm in asking whether they’d like you to give suggestions.”
29.根据“Your friends won’t feel upset, and you can still listen carefully and try to put yourself in their shoes.”及“You can ask yourself, ‘What would I do if I were to experience the same thing?’ Later you can go back to your friends with a few helpful suggestions.”
30.根据“It can be hard to listen to your friends going over and over the same thing without being able to help them.”

The English Week is coming! This is a perfect time for us to talk about different ideas about short videos. Firstly, short videos are fun and educational. They can show us interesting life moments, like funny clips or useful skills. They also help us relax after studying. Secondly, there are some problems. For example, they can be addictive. We might watch for hours and forget to study, which can affect our grades. Finally, in my opinion, we should enjoy short videos but also manage our time wisely.
