Lucy Brown, aged 12, puts smiles on the faces of kids and keeps them very warm too. She sews (缝制) blankets (毯子) for children who are dealing with challenges such as being sick, feeling unhappy, or losing a family member.
Lucy got the idea four years ago. She had just learned to sew and made a blanket as a gift for her friend’s birthday. “She loved it,” Lucy says. “So, I thought maybe other kids might need that kind of love.”
Her mom posted on the Internet that Lucy wanted to make a blanket for someone who needed care. They collected the kids’ suggestions. When 20 suggestions came, Lucy didn’t just choose one. She met all of their needs! She has already made more than 800 blankets for kids in many countries.
Her favorite part is learning about each child. “I love hearing their stories and getting to know them,” she says. She tries to design styles according to the children’s interests.
On each blanket, Lucy adds a hand-sewn (手工缝制的) heart. “That’s to let anyone who gets the blanket know they are loved,” she says.
Many kids who receive a blanket keep in touch with Lucy. She now has friends all over the world. “I love knowing that I can make a difference.” Lucy says. “Everyone can do something. Even the smallest act of kindness can change lives.”

If you walk through a park in the morning or in the evening, you might see a lot of people doing these slow and beautiful movements—Taichi.
Taichi is an ancient martial art (武术). It is a common kind of exercise in China. More than 100 million people in over 150 countries practice Taichi at present. Recently UNESCO has added Taichi to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录). Many Taichi fans were happy to hear of it.
It’s true that doing Taichi is good for our health. It can make us walk and move more freely, and it can also make us stronger. During slow movements, we can center on our hands and feet. We can control them better. Slow movements also help us to take deep and long breaths.
Taichi also centers on the harmony (和谐) between yin and yang. It shows how the ancient Chinese people saw the world. The world is full of yin and yang: dark and light, soft and hard, female and male. But they don’t oppose (对抗) each other completely. The picture of Taichi shows: a white spot (点) is in the black area and a black spot is in the white area. After a dark night, the sun will rise. Leaves fall in autumn but grow in spring. Everything keeps changing—that is how we should see the world.
Taichi carries traditional Chinese philosophy (哲学) such as being in harmony with nature and using softness to beat hardness. It has become a symbol of Chinese culture.
29. What kind of art is Taichi?
A. A modern sport. B. An ancient martial art.
C. A traditional dance. D. A new form of exercise.
30. Why were many Taichi fans happy recently?
A. Because Taichi was good for health.
B. Because Taichi became more popular.
C. Because they could practice Taichi more often.
D. Because UNESCO added Taichi to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
31. What has Taichi become a symbol of?
A. Chinese history. B. Chinese culture. C. Chinese science. D. Chinese education.
32. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To teach readers how to practice Taichi correctly.
B. To argue that Taichi should replace other forms of exercise.
C To introduce Taichi’s cultural meaning and health benefits.
D. To share the author’s personal experience of practicing Taichi.
D
①Why are children so much more creative than adults? How does that creativity disappear later? What other great ideas do children have?
②For children, everything is possible. What’s more, young children get praise and encouragement from their parents and teachers for almost any work they do especially for imaginative stories or strange pieces of art. They have heard stories of magic and they see around them technology doing all kinds of amazing things. Every problem can be solved for them. On the other hand, adults are only too well experienced in what they cannot achieve and what cannot be done. They are surrounded (围绕) by rules and laws. They have experienced failures and shame. At some stage, they have worked for a difficult boss who was not interested in their ideas— just in getting the job done on time.
③If we want to be truly creative, we need to think like children again. We need to imagine a perfect solution and then ask “Why not?”. The daughter of Edwin Land asked this question when he told her that she could not see the photo he had taken straight away. Her persistence (坚持) led him to invent the Polaroid camera (拍立得相机). In a similar way, 11-year-old Richie asked, “Why can’t we speak to each other underwater?” He invented an underwater speaking device. They show the need of having a childlike mind.
④Of course, behind every invention, there is a world of limitations (限制). But if we start by imagining an ideal (理想的) solution and then work back to overcome limitations, we will have a better chance of success than if we start with all the obstacles in a clear view.
⑤Be creative and try thinking just like a child. You did it all the time once, so now do it again.
33. Why are children more creative than adults?
A. Children believe nothing is impossible. B. Adults can’t achieve or do more things.
C. Adults are not interested in creative ideas. D. Children are praised for doing magic tricks.
34. What leads Edwin Land to invent the Polaroid camera?
A. His experience of facing failures. B. His own curiosity about photography.
C. The market demand for instant cameras. D. His daughter’s persistent question “Why not?”
35. The underlined word “obstacles” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”
A. reasons B. benefits C. interests D. difficulties
36. What can be the best title for this text?
A. Be childlike. B. Take on challenges. C. Think like a child. D. Believe in children.

Perhaps the use of fire is the most important event in human history. Lightning (闪电) would hit a tree in a forest and cause a large fire. People probably used the fire from lightning. People would use a small piece of burning wood from the fire at first.
With these fires, ancient people could cook food and keep warm. They could also see more easily at night. Of course, the piece of wood would soon stop burning, and they would not be able to create fire from it again. They had to find other ways to create fire by themselves. One way to create fire was by rubbing (摩擦) two pieces of wood together. This was difficult because it took a lot of time. Another way was by hitting two rocks together. This was also not an easy job. An easier way was by using a piece of glass and the light from the Sun to start a fire. However, it needed a good piece of glass and a sunny day for this.
Inventors in China created matches around 577 A.D. However, early matches were difficult to make and could be dangerous to use. People did not develop the really useful and safe matches until the 1850s.
