As populations grow older, aging societies will begin to face major challenges — such as the provision (提供) of health care. Elderly people have a higher chance of suffering from illnesses. One common health problem that affects elderly people is Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病). Alzheimer’s affects a person’s memory, behavior, and thinking. Because of memory loss and behavioral changes, people with Alzheimer’s may slowly become unable to take care of themselves, eventually requiring constant care from family members or caregivers. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s at the moment — drugs can only treat its symptoms (症状). But technology can improve the lives of those living with the condition. For example, tracking devices placed in watches can show where a person is. Automated (自动化的) reminders can also be stored in motion sensors (运动传感器) and placed around the house. When a sensor detects movement, it can play a recorded voice message to remind the person to lock the door or turn off the light. Alzheimer’s disease is a huge challenge, but we may be getting close to finding a solution. In the future, it might be possible to treat Alzheimer’s without using drugs. A team of researchers in Australia has created a form of technology that can send sound waves into the brain. These sound waves help to clear waste in the brain that results in Alzheimer’s. The team has tested their technology and found that it helped to restore (恢复) memory in 75 percent of mice. Work on the technology isn’t complete, but, if successful, it could prevent memory loss in people with Alzheimer’s. “I think this really does fundamentally (根本地) change our understanding of how to treat this disease,” says Professor Jurgen Götz, a co-author of the study, “and I foresee a great future for this approach.” 41. Which paragraph talks about how Alzheimer’s affects elderly people? A. Paragraph 2. B. Paragraph 3. C. Paragraph 4. D. Paragraph 5. 42 What does the author want to show by mentioning the examples in Paragraph 3? A. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s. B. People with Alzheimer’s need great care. C. Alzheimer’s can greatly affect people’s health. D. Technology can make the lives of people with Alzheimer’s better. 43. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Aging societies don’t need to worry about healthcare. B. The new technology has been widely used in hospitals. C. People with severe Alzheimer’s can’t live independently. D. The solution to Alzheimer’s disease has been discovered. 44. What is Götz’s attitude to his study? A. Worried. B. Confident. C. Regretful. D. Grateful. 45. What is the primary focus of the passage? A. Historical changes in global population trends. B. Impacts of aging societies on healthcare systems. C. The causes and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. D. Jared Ciner created the program two years ago “Our main focus is the same thing as any other gym’s, which is to help people be active and healthy, but the difference is that we do change a little bit to make sure that it is the right pace for the people we are working with, so that everybody can follow along.” Ciner used to work as a director for a local organization aimed at helping people with disabilities and as a part-time personal trainer at gyms. “I noticed that many of the people with disabilities I worked with struggled with weight problems, and were looking for more physical methods and more social ways,” he said. His volunteer experience in Ethiopia working with children from very poor families helped him understand the influence of organized physical activity, too. “That helped me realize how much organized physical activity can help people connect to each other and increase people’s self-esteem (自尊)” Ciner said. Classes at Spirit Club are interactive, and students can come with parents. They participate in partnered workouts and learn balance, strength, speed and agility (灵活性). B Junko Tabei was a Japanese mountaineer. She was the first woman to climb Mt. Qomolangma. Junko was born on September 22, 1939, in Miharu, Fukushima, Japan. She was born as the fifth daughter among seven children. She was considered as a weak child in her early days. However, just at the age of 10, she began climbing the mountain, while on a class trip to Mount Nasu. But she only got to make a few climbs during her high school days, as her family could not afford her expensive hobby. Junko attended Showa Women’s University from 1958 to 1962, studying English and American literature. Also, she was a member of the mountain climbing club at her college. She started the “Ladies Climbing Club: Japan (LCC)” in 1969 after graduating from college. Its slogan was “Let’s go on an overseas expedition (探险) by ourselves.” At the time, Junko climbed Mount Fuji and the Matterhorn and was known as “the mountain climber” in Japan. Junko’s LCC team attempted to climb to the summit (顶峰) of Mt. Qomolangma. The team contained 15 members. They had to struggle a lot before attempting to climb Mt. Qomolangma. At first, they were told that women were for raising children. The public just found it hard to accept. However, at the last minute, Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper and Nippon Television sponsored (资助) them. After a long period of time, the team headed to Kathmandu in early 1975. They used the same path that mountaineer Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa (夏尔巴人) guide Tenzing Norgay took. Unfortunately, the women and the guides were buried in the snow during an accident. Junko became unconscious (不省人事的) for about six minutes until the Sherpa guides dug her out. Later, on May 16, 1975, Junko Tabei became the first woman to reach the summit of Mt. Qomolangma, along with her Sherpa guide, Ang Tsering. 36. Why did Junko Tabei make only a few climbs during her high school years? A. Because she had no interest in climbing. B. Because she didn’t have enough money to climb. C. Because she considered climbing very dangerous. D. Because she wasn’t strong enough to climb. 37. When did Junko start LCC? A. In high school. B. At college. C. After graduating from college. D. After climbing Mount Fuji. 38. How did the public react after hearing the LCC team wanted to climb Mt. Qomolangma? A. They felt it was worth a try. B. They were unconcerned about it. C. They didn’t think it was a good idea. D. They tried their best to sponsor the team. 39. What do we know about the LCC team’s climbing Mt. Qomolangma? A. Just one person reached the top. B. Junko found a new path to the top. C. Guide Ang Tsering saved all the teammates. D. An accident put the participants in great danger. 40. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To introduce a great woman mountaineer. B. To tell about Japanese mountaineering history. C. To share advice on climbing Mt. Qomolangma. D. To describe a mountaineer’s dangerous experience. C For the first time in history, there are more people above the age of 65 than children below the age of five. D. Paragraph 5. 42. Jared Ciner created the program two years ago, “Our main focus is the same thing as any other gym’s, which is to help people be active and healthy, but the difference is that we do change a little bit to make sure that it is the right pace for the people we are working with, so that everybody can follow along.” Ciner used to work as a director for a local organization aimed at helping people with disabilities and as a part-time personal trainer at gyms. They are also encouraged to eat right. Alan Bradshaw, who is mentally disabled, has been coming to classes for two years. “He recently lost 21 pounds,” said his mother. “He is more outgoing. When he first started, he couldn’t sit on the floor or get down on the floor. He is doing that now. Great changes have happened to him and it is an important step forward for him.
