Two-Man Ironman
On Sept.17, 2022, Jeff and his son, Johnny, set out to begin the first of three legs of the Ironman competition, where competitors must complete a 140 miles of swimming, bicycling and running in under 17 hours. Not that long ago, Johnny could barely walk a few steps because he was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). But his dream of being a runner never stopped.
From the day Johnny was born, Jeff refused to let his son’s disability hold him back. Determined to show Johnny that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete, Jeff helped him engage in running. They began waking up at 4 a.m. so Jeff could run while pushing his son in a special wheelchair called a racing chair. Every morning, they drove themselves to run increasingly longer distances. Soon, they were entering 5K races, then on to Ironman competition. Jeff would act as Johnny’s arms and legs, carrying the weight of his son throughout the race.
The race began with a 2.4-mile swim. Settling Johnny into a kayak, Jeff eased himself into the water. Swimming while dragging another person was very tough. But worst of all, Jeff had to struggle with jellyfish. “I occupied my mind by counting the number of times I got stung (蜇),” he says.
After the two men completed the tough bike section in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the final leg of the race — a 26.2-mile marathon. They’d been competing for 10.5 hours, leaving another 6.5 hours to make their time. But at Mile 19, Johnny saw the clock ticking down and worried they wouldn’t make the cutoff. Despite the tiredness, Jeff was convinced they were going all right and then picked up the pace.
With minutes left and 200 feet to the finish line, Jeff stopped to help Johnny out of his racing chair and handed him his rolling walker. After years of painstaking work, Johnny was determined to finish his races on his own. After 16 hours, 55 minutes and 35seconds,the father and son crossed the finish line together.
As the crowd cheered on an overwhelmed Johnny, a weary Jeff kept a low profle. “My father didn’t want his finish line moment,” says Johnny, tears in eyes. “He wanted it to be mine.”
34. Why did Jeff lead Johnny to running?
A. To get closer to Johnny. B. To fulfill Johnny’s dream.
C. To discover Johnny’s interest. D. To speed up Johnny’s recovery.
35. What challenged Jeff most in the swimming race?
A. Lack of energy. B. Pain from injuries.
C. Mental tiredness. D. Body weight change.
36. Which of the following can best describe Johnny according to the passage?
A. Strong-willed and grateful. B. Warm-hearted and sensitive.
C. Patient and generous. D. Tough and humorous.
37. What does the passage mainly tell us?

C
Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave-and mighty (强大的) force will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you are sure you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas-even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim, “ I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet (子弹) — and stopped him cold.”
Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme-is not one that can be got overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.
So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities — and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.
38. Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?
A He faced huge risks. B. He lacked mighty forces.
C. Fear prevented him from trying. D. Failure blocked his way to success.
39. What was especially important for Tim’s successful defense in the football game?
A. His physical strength. B. His basic skill.
C. His real fear. D. His spiritual force.
40. What can be learned from Paragraph 5?
A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults. B. Trying without success is meaningless.
C. Repeated failure creates a better life. D. Boldness can be gained little by little.
41. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to be courageous. B. To tell people the ways to achieve success.
C. To advise people to build up physical power. D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.

Learning to Run
An article published in the scientific journal Nature discusses an important aspect of human evolution (进化). According to Bramble and Lieberman, Professors at the University of Utah, humans have a number of features that make them surprisingly good runners. “We are confident that running was important in the origin of the human body form,” says Bramble.
Traditional thinking has been that humans are poor runners compared to such animals as horses. However, this is only true if we consider running at high speed, especially over short distances. Even an athlete can hardly run as quickly as a horse does, and can only keep up a top speed for 15 seconds or so. But when it comes to long-distance running, humans will do astonishingly well. They can keep a steady pace for many kilometres, and their speed is at least at the same level with that of horses.
Bramble and Lieberman examined 26 parts of human bodies. One of the most interesting of these is the nuchal ligament (韧带). When we run, it is this ligament that prevents our head from moving back and forth or from side to side. Therefore, we are able to run with steady heads, held high. Then there are Achilles tendons (跟腱) at the backs of our legs, forming the mechanical links between the muscles to the bones. They act like strong strings and help to push us forward when we run. Besides, we have low, wide shoulders, a development which allows us to run more effectively. Add to this our light forearms, which swing in co-operation with the movement of our legs to assist balance, and one begins to appreciate the point that Bramble and Lieberman are trying to make.
But what advantage is gained from being good long-distance runners? One theory is that this ability may have permitted early humans to get food more effectively. Some scientists guess that early humans may have run after animals for great distances to make them tired before killing them. Running would also have shown another advantage: early humans might have eaten the meat left over from a kill by other large animals. They may have been warned of the existence of a freshly killed animal by vultures (秃鹰), and the faster they got to the scene of the kill, the better.
“Research on the history of human ability of running has traditionally been controversial” says Lieberman. “At the very least, I hope this theory will make many people have second thoughts about how humans learned to run and why we are built the way we are.”
42. In Paragraph 2, the author mainly tells us that ________.
A. humans are poor runners compared to horses
B. humans are good runners over long distances
C. humans may run at high speed for a short time
D. humans can keep the same speed when running
43. We can learn from Paragraph 3 that ________.
A. tendons are a successful adaptation for running
B. strong muscles and bones keep running effective
C. the shape of shoulders affects the position of heads
D. humans can run faster if they have longer forearms
44. What conclusion is drawn about early humans?
A. They followed birds to avoid danger.
B. They were unable to kill large animals.
C. They developed their big brains for running.
D. They evolved running due to the need for hunting.
【答案】42. B 43. A 44. D

根据前文“Health and fitness help a person live a good and healthy life. Often due to various pressures, we tend to ignore our health. (健康和健身有助于一个人过上美好健康的生活。由于各种各样的压力,我们往往会忽视我们的健康。)”提到“由于各种压力,我们往往忽视健康”(ignore our health),空格需承接“忽视健康”的后果。A项“This makes our body suffer and we catch lifestyle and other diseases. (这会让我们的身体受损,患上生活方式相关疾病及其他疾病。)”用“this”指代“忽视健康”的行为,与后文“It is the fitness level of our body that helps us fight these diseases. (正是我们身体的健康水平帮助我们对抗这些疾病。)”中的“these diseases”形成精准呼应,符合逻辑。故选A项。
【46题详解】
空格为段落主题句,根据后文“We need to be fit to have a healthy body. Similarly, if we are healthy, we shall naturally be attracted towards keeping the fitness of our body. Health is the state of our body at a given time. (我们需要有一个健康的身体。同样,如果我们身体健康,我们自然会被保持身体健康所吸引。健康是我们身体在特定时间的状态。)”通过需要健康才能保持身体状态,若健康则自然会注重健身展开,核心是“健康与健身的相互关系”。F 项 “Health and fitness are interrelated (相互联系) to each other. (健康与健身是相互联系的。)”直接概括段落主旨,后文“similarly”(同样地)进一步强化二者的双向关联,符合语境。故选F项。

(它还能帮助我们保持冷静,放松心情。)”可知,“it”指代前文“six to eight hours of sleep”,“also”体现并列关系,补充睡眠在“心理状态”上的益处,与后文“in turn, gives us new goals (进而为我们带来健康与健身的新目标)”形成逻辑递进。故选C项。
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题:第30、31题各2分,第32题3分,第33题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
In a fast-paced world, where stress and mental tiredness seem commonplace, we’re constantly looking for new ways to unwind. People may carry out a variety of activities to help them relax. But what about the birdsongs or other nature sounds? Could they also help people to let go of the tensions of modern life?
According to a study by King’s College London in 2022, seeing or hearing birds could help to boost the mental wellbeing of people. Taking a trip to places rich in birdlife like parks, forests and canals and encountering birds singing to each other in the trees could even help to treat some mental health conditions. And it’s not just birds that could have a curative effect on our moods. Another study conducted by the National Trust compared the effects of woodland sounds with voiced meditation (冥想) apps. The study found listening to birdsong as well as other woodland sounds like leaves crunching underfoot or the gentle flow of a stream boosted feelings of relaxation 30% more than the apps do. Other sounds which may help to cool people down are waves lapping on the shore, gentle wind, and light rainfall.
However, not all of us live in rural surroundings, and depending on where we live, a trip to the countryside to see birds may not be an option. But could the nature sounds that originate there still help you? According to research by California Polytechnic State University, even a recording of the sounds of birds had a profound effect on people’s mood, while other studies saw people listening to soundscapes of the coast and forests with similar outcomes to their wellbeing.
So, wherever you live, you can access the wonderful sounds of birds and nature during a stroll through a wood or via some headphones. And maybe listening to the chirps, trills, warbles and whistles of some birds could help you to relax after a long, hard day.

C Mental tiredness. D. Body weight change.
36. Which of the following can best describe Johnny according to the passage?
A. Strong-willed and grateful. B. Warm-hearted and sensitive.
C. Patient and generous. D. Tough and humorous.
37 What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Fathers are not born; they are made.
C. The value of a loving father has no price. D. Success comes from failures along the journey.
So always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities — and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.
D
“Research on the history of human ability of running has traditionally been controversial,” says Lieberman. “At the very least, I hope this theory will make many people have second thoughts about how humans learned to run and why we are built the way we are.”
