And since April 2023, they are up a sharp 3.4%. To fight inflation (通货膨胀) and help shoppers save money, Target announced that it will be cutting costs on essential items throughout the summer. Which products will see lower prices? Target’s price reductions will hit 5,000 items in key departments, including groceries and household essentials. According to the company’s press release, grocery items such as milk, meat, fresh produce, yogurt, and coffee will see decreased pricing. Additionally, Target will reduce prices on household essentials such as baby oil, paper towels and feeding bottles. How much is Target lowering prices? Target is not offering flat-rate or across-the-board price cuts, which means new pricing is specific to each item and not based on a certain percentage. According to the listed prices in Target stores and online, decreases will be between 20 cents and $1. For example, a bag of Good & Gather Roasted Nuts dropped from $6.89 to $5.99, and a package of Purina Cat Food went from $2.39 to $1.99. Will this continue beyond summer? While Target is advertising these price cuts as a means to help shoppers save this summer, these deals will continue after August. A Target representative has confirmed that these are the new everyday low prices, which will help out shoppers’ wallets for many seasons to come. What else do shoppers need to know? While there are plenty of Target savings hacks (妙招), one of the best is taking advantage of Target Circle deals. Shoppers can save an extra 5% on their purchases if they pay using the Target Circle Card. 1. Where may we see the price cuts in Target? A. Baby Care Section. B. Toy Land Section. C. Outdoor Living Section. D. Office Supplies Section. 2. Which part explains the timing of the Target price cuts? A. Will this continue beyond summer? B. How much is Target lowering prices? C. What else do shoppers need to know? D. Which products will see lower prices? 3. What is the purpose of this text? A. To save Target. B. To promote luxuries. C. To fight inflation. D. To inform customers. B I have always been passionate about art, but with children to feed and educate, pursuing it seemed impossible. At 83, I finally registered for art school. Born in 1933, I led a life marked by family struggles but also resilience (适应力). I studied mechanical engineering and later management, becoming an associate professor at business school, where I now hold emeritus (荣誉退休的) status. About ten years ago, after my wife fell ill with Alzheimer’s and required care, I turned to painting. Determined to take this new path seriously, I applied to an art programme in Barcelona, insisting on painting despite advice to study art history. Balancing my studies with work, it took me seven years to complete the four-year course, graduating last year at the age of 90. Returning to school was a challenge; everything had changed since my earlier education. Most of my classmates were in their 20s, but they welcomed me warmly, often seeking my advice due to my life experience. I encountered some resistance from a couple of teachers early on, but I kept going. The first two years focused on flowers, still lifes, and landscapes, before we explored abstraction, which I enjoy most. I believe that talent comes from hard work; sometimes I feel stuck, but I push through. My artistic influences include Spanish painters like Francisco de Zurbarán and Joaquín Sorolla, and while I appreciate beauty, I value goodness and truth even more. I create abstract landscapes from memory, expressing my emotions through colour. I paint primarily on weekends and during holidays. While I don’t plan to exhibit extensively, my work was displayed in a small village for six months, though it received little attention. After a lifetime in engineering and education, I may not fully identify as an artist, but I now have the recognition that supports my journey into art. 4. Why did the author decide to pursue art at 83? A. To find cures for Alzheimer’s. B. To change his career path. C. To pursue his passion for art. D. To support his big family. 5. How did the author’s classmates react to him? A. They enjoyed his company. B. They tended to ignore him. C. They inspired him to go on. D. They resisted his presence. 6. Which best describes the author’s art journey? A. Eventful. B. Romantic. C. Casual. D. Challenging. 7. What would be a suitable title for the text? A. The Struggle of Old Artists. B. From Engineering to Art. C. The Value of Art Education. D. A Lifetime of Art Pursuit. C The sun and the sea, both rich and free, are used in a unique project to create vertical sea farms (垂直海洋农场) floating on the ocean that can produce fresh water for drinking and agriculture. Professor Haolan Xu and Dr Gary Owens from UniSA’s Future Industries Institute have developed the vertical floating sea farm which is made up of two rooms: an upper room similar to a glasshouse and a lower water harvest room. Dr Owens says, “Clean water is supplied by an array of solar evaporators (太阳能蒸发器) that can take in the seawater, collect the salt and, under the sun’s rays, free clean water vapor (水蒸气) into the air, which then changes into water and is passed to the plant growth room.” “Other designs have located evaporators inside the growth room, which take up valuable space that could otherwise be used for plant growth. Also, these systems are easy to cause overheating and crop death,” Professor Xu says. “In our design, the vertical evaporators and the growth room decrease the device’s overall footprint. Besides, it is operated mostly by machine and has a low cost, using only solar energy and seawater to produce clean water and grow crops.” Freshwater accounts for just 2.5% of the world’s water and most of this is not accessible because it’s stuck in glaciers, ice caps or is deep underground. The United Nations estimates that by 2050, about 2.4 billion people are likely to experience water shortages. In the same period, the global supply of water for agriculture is expected to decrease by around 19%. However, the researchers have shown that the recycled water produced in this way is pure enough to drink and has a lower salt content than WHO guidelines for drinking water. Dr Owens says their design is only at the proof-of-concept stage, but after it is proved to be a success, their next step is to ramp it up through a set of individual devices to meet larger water supply needs. “Seawater is an obvious solution to the growing global shortages of water, food, and agricultural land,” Dr Owens adds. 8. What do solar evaporators on the vertical sea farm do? A. Trap water vapor from the sea surface. B. Limit the temperature of the growth room. C. Push water to the lower harvest room. D. Remove salt from seawater under the sun. 9. What is an advantage of the new design? A. It can store much more extra solar energy. B. It enables a high output of crops. C. It allows for more space for plant growth. D. It can run continuously for long. 10. What does the author intend to do with the figures in Paragraph 4? A Reveal the lack of underground water. B. Stress the seriousness of water shortage. C Unfold the details of WHO guidelines. D. Emphasize the wide spread of seawater. 11. What does the underlined phrase “ramp it up” in the last paragraph mean? A. Increase the size of the farm. B. Build a strict water-saving system. C. Reduce the cost of the farm. D. Have more people know the farm. D California researchers developed a glove embedded with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone. Unlike its past counterparts, the new glove is lightweight, inexpensive and long-lasting. The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non- signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non- signers without needing someone else to translate for them. The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device, simultaneously teaching a machine how to recognize them. The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from“ electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone. The system was able to recognize 660 hand motions and finger placements that stand for each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algorithm (计算程序) recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second — or about a tone word per second. The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “capture facial expressions that are a part of ASL”. The same exact hand-shape and movement can totally change meaning because of the facial expression that is used to accompany it. Take the word MUCH. The degree of how much can totally be determined by the facial expression alone while the sign stays the same. Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores. 12. Who are the main target users of the new glove? A. Translators. B. Foreign teachers. C. Sign language users. D. English learners. 13. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. Where the new glove was used. B. Why the new glove was invented. C. What makes the new glove popular. D. How the new glove works. 14. How do researchers improve the glove’s correctness of recognition? A. By catching facial expressions of the participants. B. By lengthening the time of catching gestures. C. By updating the algorithm of the smartphone. D. By inputting more lectern and words of different languages. 15. What will researchers do with the glove in the future according to the last paragraph? A. Make it useful for everyone. B. Improve its performance. C. Extend its service life. D. Beautify its outlook. Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice. ___16___. Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better. And, yes, “the dog ate it” was one of them. As time passed, I grew tired of hearing “I don’t have my homework because...”. So I quit accepting any excuse. When I was transferred to an inner-city middle school, I took my no-nonsense attitude with me. “No excuses, no extensions!” I warned my eighth graders on the first day of school. I collected homework at the beginning of each class. When a student didn’t have it, I never asked why. Instead, I sighed loudly, shook my head in dramatic disgust and with the student looking on — recorded a zero in the grade book. I soon gained the reputation I thought I wanted. Then, one afternoon, shortly after the dismissal bell rang, Anthony approached me. “Could I talk to you a minute?” he asked shyly, not taking his eyes off the floor. “I know you don’t accept any explanation, but I don't want you to think I’m a slacker because I come to school without mine so often.” Anthony looked up at me for the first time, and I could see that his lower lip was quivering. “It’s just that...well, my dad moved out, and my mom waits tables at night, so I have to take care of my little brothers. Sometimes they cry a lot, and it makes it hard to concentrate.” I put my hand on Anthony’s thin shoulder. “Why are you just now telling me..?” I stopped in mid-sentence. I knew why. So I changed the question. “Would it help if you stay here after school and work on it before you go home?” He swallowed hard and nodded. 4. C 5. A 6. D 7. At 83, I finally registered for art school.(我一直对艺术充满热情,但有孩子要养活和教育,追求艺术似乎是不可能的。 根据第三段中的“Most of my classmates were in their 20s, but they welcomed me warmly, often seeking my advice due to my life experience.(我的大多数同学都是20多岁,但他们热情地欢迎我,经常因为我的生活经历而寻求我的建议。)” 故选A。 根据第二段中的“Balancing my studies with work, it took me seven years to complete the four-year course, graduating last year at the age of 90.(平衡我的学习和工作,我花了七年时间完成了四年的课程,去年90岁毕业。)”、第三段中的“Returning to school was a challenge; everything had changed since my earlier education.(重返校园是一个挑战;自从我早期接受教育以来,一切都变了。)”和“I encountered some resistance from a couple of teachers early on, but I kept going.(我早些时候遇到了几位老师的阻力,但我还是坚持了下来。)”、第四段中的“I believe that talent comes from hard work; sometimes I feel stuck, but I push through.(我相信才华来自努力工作;有时候我觉得被困住了,但我坚持了下来。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“At 83, I finally registered for art school.(83岁时,我终于注册了艺术学校。)”和“I studied mechanical engineering and later management, becoming an associate professor at business school, where I now hold emeritus (荣誉退休的) status.(我学习了机械工程,后来学习了管理,成为商学院的副教授,现在我在那里享有荣誉退休的地位。)”以及最后一段“After a lifetime in engineering and education, I may not fully identify as an artist, but I now have the recognition that supports my journey into art.(在工程和教育领域度过一生后,我可能不会完全认同自己是一名艺术家,但我现在得到了支持我艺术之旅的认可。)” B。 C The sun and the sea, both rich and free, are used in a unique project to create vertical sea farms (垂直海洋农场) floating on the ocean that can produce fresh water for drinking and agriculture. A. Reveal the lack of underground water. B. Stress the seriousness of water shortage. C. Unfold the details of WHO guidelines. D. Emphasize the wide spread of seawater. 11. What does the underlined phrase “ramp it up” in the last paragraph mean? A. Increase the size of the farm. B. Build a strict water-saving system. C. Reduce the cost of the farm. D. Have more people know the farm. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第二段“Dr Owens says, “Clean water is supplied by an array of solar evaporators (太阳能蒸发器) that can take in the seawater, collect the salt and, under the sun’s rays, free clean water vapor (水蒸气) into the air, which then changes into water and is passed to the plant growth room.” 根据第三段““Other designs have located evaporators inside the growth room, which take up valuable space that could otherwise be used for plant growth. Also, these systems are easy to cause overheating and crop death,” Professor Xu says. “In our design, the vertical evaporators and the growth room decrease the device’s overall footprint. (其他设计将蒸发器放置在生长室内,占用了本可用于植物生长的宝贵空间。此外,这些系统容易导致过热和作物死亡,”徐教授说。“在我们的设计中,垂直蒸发器和生长室减少了设备的整体占地面积)”可知,新设计的优势在于通过垂直蒸发器和生长室的布局,腾出了更多植物生长的空间。故选C项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Freshwater accounts for just 2.5% of the world’s water and most of this is not accessible because it’s stuck in glaciers, ice caps or is deep underground. The United Nations estimates that by 2050, about 2.4 billion people are likely to experience water shortages. In the same period, the global supply of water for agriculture is expected to decrease by around 19%. (淡水仅占世界水资源的2.5%,其中大部分无法获取,因为它被困在冰川、冰盖或地下深处。联合国估计,到2050年,大约24亿人可能会经历水资源短缺。在同一时期,全球农业用水供应预计将减少约19%)”可知,作者通过列举数据强调了水资源短缺的严重性。故选B项。 【11题详解】 词义猜测题。根据最后一段“Dr Owens says their design is only at the proof-of-concept stage, but after it is proved to be a success, their next step is to ramp it up through a set of individual devices to meet larger water supply needs. (Owens博士说,他们的设计还处于概念验证阶段,但在证明成功后,他们的下一步是通过一系列单独的装置来ramp it up,以满足更大的供水需求)”可知,设计还出于概念验证阶段,证明成功后会扩大规模,以满足更大的供水需求。由此猜测“ramp it up”的意思是扩大垂直海洋农场的规模。故选A项。 D California researchers developed a glove embedded with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone. C Sign language users. C 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第二段中“The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non- signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non- signers without needing someone else to translate for them. (该设备可以帮助消除签名者和非签名者之间的沟通障碍。希望这能为使用手语的人与不使用手语的人直接交流开辟一条简单的途径,而不需要别人为他们翻译。)”可知,该设备能为使用手语的人与不使用手语的人直接交流开辟一条简单的途径,由此可知,这款新手套是为手语使用者设计的。故选C项。 【13题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段“The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from“ electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a“ dollar- coin- sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone. Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better. Listen critically to your inner critic In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors. ___17___. And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it. Create psychological distance from yourself One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion. ___18___. Fit your conversation to your goal ___19___. Instructional self- talk like“ shoulders back” or“ keep the left arm straight” works to improve technique. Motivational self-talk such as“ you’ve got this” or“ keep going” can help with confidence, strength, or endurance. It’s important to be aware of the type of self-talk you are using and make sure it aligns with your goals and needs. ___20___ Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.” A. Treat yourself as a friend B. Make as many friends as possible C. Using instructional language is appropriate D. Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals E. So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself F. Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed G. This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat 【答案】16. F 17. E 18. G 19. D 20. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了几种帮助改善自我对话进而提升个人表现的方法,旨在引导学生注重与自我的沟通,从而更好地实现自己的目标。 【16题详解】 根据空前句“Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice.(也许你可能听到了内心训斥的声音)”提到你可能从内心的声音中听到了长时间的数落;空后“Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.(这里有几个方法来改变你的自我对话脚本,用你内心的声音来表现得更好。)”可知,这里有几种方法可以改变你的自我对话脚本,并利用你的内心声音让你表现得更好。设空处位于段中,应承上启下。F项中的“ negative comments in your head”与空前句中的“ an earful from your inner voice”相呼应,且其中的“ make it difficult for you to succeed”与空后句中的“ perform better”相呼应。 因此,F选项“Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed(通常,你头脑中的负面评论会让你很难成功)”衔接上下文。故选F。 【17题详解】 根据后文“And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.(当你内心的声音开始充满沮丧和沮丧时,暂停谈话,考虑改变它的方法)”中提取的关系词“And”可知,设空处与空后句构成并列关系。空前句“In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors.(在压力很大的情况下,自言自语往往是至关重要的。我们内心的声音是由情感引起的,而不是有意识地、合乎逻辑地思考。这影响了从我们如何自言自语到我们的行为)”与内心的声音的消极影响相关,空后句与应对内心的声音的做法有关。根据设空处与空后句的并列关系可知,设空处锁定在E项。E项还与空前句构成因果关系,且该项中的“critically”是对小标题中的“critically”和段首句中的“critical”的原词及同根词复现。E选项“So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself(因此,你的第一步是批判性地倾听你对自己说的话)”符合语境。故选E。 【18题详解】 根据空前内容“One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion.(管理压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离。这可以通过使用第二人称或第三人称代词来实现。问自己:“为什么你感到这么有压力?”是一种创造心理距离的方法,你需要这种距离来调节情绪)”提到应对压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离,并举例说明“问自己‘为什么你感到压力如此之大?’”是一种创造调节情绪所需的心理距离的方法。因此,设空处位于段尾,应能承接上文,与空前句提到的创造心理距离的方法相关,G选项“This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat(这样你会发现你的任务是一个有趣的挑战而不是威胁)”说明了使用该方法的好处,且其中的“ This way”指代的正是空前句中的“Asking yourself, “Why are you feeling so stressed?””。故选G。 【19题详解】 根据本段小标题“Fit your conversation to your goal(让你的对话符合你的目标)”可知,本段内容与不同自我对话类型和目标之间的联系相关。因此,设空处也应与此相关,故将答案锁定在D选项“Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals(不同类型的自言自语对特定的目标效果最好)”,其中的“goals”是对小标题中的“goal”的同词复现。故选D。 【20题详解】 根据本段内容“Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”(贬低或消极的自言自语只会增加你的压力,阻碍你前进。相反,你应该同情地对自己说话——就像对朋友说话一样。重新创造负面信息以包含积极内容。“我不擅长这个。可以改成“放轻松。”你已经准备好了。”“我不知道该说什么。可以用“记得微笑,问好问题”来代替)”可知,本段建议人们不要进行贬低性的或消极的自我对话,而要像对待朋友那样对自己说积极的话,A选项“Treat yourself as a friend(把自己当成朋友)”能很好地概括本段主旨。故选A。 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Manuel Vera, a retiree in Silver Spring, had no idea his efforts would go this far. Paragraph 1: The next day, I made an announcement to all my students. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Having read their stories, I learned more about these kids. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: The next day, I made an announcement to all my students. I told them that I’d be offering an after-school study hall. Anthony was the first to show up. Several days later, Terrell joined him, followed by twins Sandy and Randy. Before long, I had a room full of eighth graders to work on their lessons. I never asked why any of them were there, but I soon had a large collection of “I don’t have my homework because...” stories. All were very real. None were amusing. Paragraph 2: Having read their stories, I learned more about these kids. The things I learned that year weren’t taught in the education classes. I discovered not all kids come from homes that are safe and warm. Not all kids have a quiet bedroom with a desk and study light. Some don’t have a home where a parent is even around. And some kids do go to bed hungrily. Most importantly, I learned that “I’ll listen” works better than “No excuses”. 词汇激活 行为类 ①提供:offer/supply ②出现:show up/make an appearance ③发现:discover/find out 情绪类 ①有趣的:amusing/funny/interesting 【点睛】[高分句型1] I told them that I’d be offering an after-school study hall.
