College students around the world have recently developed products and designs for a chance to win the James Dyson Sustainability Award. The competition is tough, as many of the brightest engineers and scientists compete for the prize. But while every entry was impressive, Carvey Ehren Maigue’s ultimately won — for good reason!
The 27-year-old from the Philippines has been studying at one of the country’s top engineering schools and will graduate soon. Throughout his time there, he learned plenty about design, which is what led him to create AuREUS System Technology. These solar panels are made from food waste and transform UV light (紫外线) into renewable energy, even on a cloudy day!
According to the awarding remarks, AuREUS combines renewable material and advanced technology, which allows other devices to harvest UV light and transform it into electricity. Of course, “it is environmentally friendly and can be used for a long time, perfectly meeting our purpose and making it the most striking one! It’s truly a game changer!”
AuREUS is based on a plastic material, so it can be formed into different shapes. The science behind it is a bit confusing, but in Carvey’s words, “AuREUS is actually a material, or a technology. With AuREUS, we upcycle the crops of the farmers that were hit by natural disasters, such as typhoons, which also happen to be an effect of climate change. By transforming them into new energy, we can be both future-looking, and solve the problems that we are currently experiencing now.”
While it’s clear to us that this product is special, Carvey was still caught by surprise when he found out he won the competition. It took a few days for him to process the news, and he’s already looking at what he can create next! “I was very happy because I know that through this award, I will be able to reach out to more people,” he added. “This is my second time applying, and through persistence, I managed to win.”
4. What is the function of the second paragraph?
A. To offer background information about Carvey.
B. To show how Carvey prepared for the competition.
C. To explain why Carvey could win the competition.
D. To introduce some unknown factors behind the win.
5. What makes AuREUS stand out from the entries?
A. Its sustainability. B. Its high technology.
C. Its new materials. D. Its effective use.
6. What can we learn about AuREUS?
A It can detect some food waste.
B. It may promote crop production.
C. It is mainly meant for farmers.
D. It can make waste advantageous.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Carvey?
A. Positive and hotheaded. B. Hard-working and humble.
C. Helpful and persistent. D. Broad-minded and accessible.

The printed book is back. Recent studies have shown that students keep in mind more information when they read a hard-copy book compared to reading on a digital device.
I love the way we now judge printed books using the language of the digital world. E-books may come with a “suite of guiding tools”, but it turns out that the best guiding devices are your fingers. You can use them to look through the pages forwards and backwards. To think, all this time, those devices have just been sitting there, hanging at the end of your arm.
Fans of digital books may point out that e-readers have a handy “search” tool. Old-fashioned books also have a search function, in which you turn back to the opening chapter to remind yourself of the hero’s description. They even have a “bookmark system”, which uses a device called a “bookmark”.
Fans of the e-book point out that digital text is easy to annotate. Some devices even feature a little image of a pencil to guide the reader through the process. Traditional-book users have a similar system called a “pencil”. With it, favoured passages can be underlined and, if it’s a history book, comments can be written in the margin (页边), such as “Not so, according to The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.” Thus noted, such books can be left around for others to study, convincing family members of your insight.
The printed book, of course, has other advantages. A full bookshelf is at once a sound base and a store of knowledge. And any properly thumbed book will always fall open at the sexiest scene. Also, the smell of old books in a second-hand bookshop is instantly remindful. Yes, it’s a mix of mould (霉味) and old paper, but to me it represents possibility.
Educational fashions come and go, so maybe the shift back to traditional books won’t last. But for the moment, I find myself standing at attention, extending my textbook-built shoulders and saluting their glorious return.
In the debate about which is better, it seems that the hard-copy book is harder to knock out than originally thought.
8. Why does the author use the digital language to judge printed books?
A. To explain concepts. B. To highlight development of languages.
C. To please readers. D. To make better comparisons.
9. What does the underlined word “annotate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Search. B. Access. C. Add notes. D. Get information.
10. What attracts the readers as to printed books?
A. Value of senses. B. Knowledge storage. C. Bookshelves. D. Bookstores.
11. .Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Why E-books Are Convenient B. Why the Printed Book Is Back
C. Why Educational Fashions Change D. Why Digital Reading Becomes Popular

In a paper in the journal BioScience, researchers put forward an innovative plan: sending a box filled with cryo-preserved (低温保存的) cells from diverse animal species to a shadowed region on the moon. The natural cold there can keep the samples frozen, aiming to create a bio-repository (生物库) for long-term species conservation.
The idea of a biodiversity repository has been incubated for decades. Lead author Mary Hagedorn, a senior research scientist, has spent 20 years on coral cryo-preservation. A lunar bio-repository would extend this idea to a wider range of animals, possibly including endangered species and culturally important animals. Cryo-preserved cells must be at minus 196°C. On Earth, maintaining this temperature requires liquid nitrogen, electricity, and human supervision (监督). Any disruption (中断) can endanger the samples. In contrast, the permanently shadowed regions on the moon may offer a stable, cold environment without the need for artificial cooling.
The scientists draw inspiration from the Global Seed Vault in Norway. There, more than one million seed samples are preserved underneath the permafrost, which naturally cools them. However, in 2017, it was flooded due to climate-change-related permafrost melting (融化), showing that Earth’s storage sites are weak.
Storing cells on the moon, however, also poses challenges. With only a thin atmosphere, the moon is exposed to solar and cosmic radiation that can degrade DNA. Additionally, lunar dust, which sticks to everything, is another potential concern.
So far, the researchers have successfully cryo-preserved skin samples of the starry goby, a fish for coral reef health. They hope to attract new partners by publicizing their idea. They’ve applied for a spot on a 2025 NASA flight to test the radiation exposure of cryo-preserved cells.
Some experts question the move of the lunar bio-repository, arguing that it’s costly and may shift resources from ongoing conservation efforts. But Hagedorn believes that the current situation on Earth urgently calls for such a biodiversity repository, which is another way to protect Earth’s precious biodiversity.
12. Why do researchers want to create a lunar bio-repository?
A. To test cryo-preservation tech.
B. To collect diverse animal cells.
C. To study the lunar environment.
D. To protect Earth’s biodiversity.
13. What does the underlined word “incubated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Hidden. B. Developed.
C. Repeated. D. Challenged.
14. What can we infer from the example of the Global Seed Vault?
A. Permafrost is a safe cooling material.
B. Norway has advanced storage technology.
C Earth’s storage sites are not always reliable.
D. Climate change is the main threat to seed storage.
15. What’s Hagedorn’s attitude towards the lunar bio-repository?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
C. Indifferent. D. Opposed.

Not long ago, I visited a gorge with my parents. It is a gorge with permanent water, and so it’s home to a variety of animals, including monkeys. The monkeys live on the steep cliff faces where they bound from ledge (岩架) to ledge on vertical walls that many rock climbers would find challenging. My family joined the boat trip through the gorge hoping to see the monkeys.
Macca was the captain of the boat. He obviously loved his job and knew very well about this unique area and its wildlife. His knowledge had us curious to learn what he knew. His description was so detailed that it was as if he were enumerating (列举) the heirlooms (传家宝) of his own family. What had set out to be an ordinary tourist trip, however, turned out to be something different.
We were enjoying the scenery when one of the passengers pointed to the edge of a cliff and said, “There’s a monkey in that cleft.” “Where?” asked Macca, spinning his head around quickly to look. The passenger was pointing to a spot where Macca wasn’t used to seeing monkeys. He put the boat in reverse, and there, wedged (楔入) in a tiny monkey. “This,” Macca said, “is the baby of a female who lives in a cave farther down the gorge It looks like this monkey has slipped on the rock face and fallen into the water, clambered up, and got wedged in this cleft — unable to climb up the steep cliff and unable to swim in the water if it falls back.”
Macca nosed the boat to the cliff wall, grabbed a towel, and gently lifted the monkey out, drying its wet fur as he did. His wife Maria, who was also on the trip, took over the care of the little monkey. She let us look at this brown bundle of fur with its cute face, wide eyes, and alert ears. It tried to bury itself in the towel like an ostrich sticking its head in the sand.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
We were allowed to look but not touch, Maria told us.

Farther up the river Macca edged his boat onto a pebbly little beach.

A. It can detect some food waste.
B. It may promote crop production.
C. It is mainly meant for farmers.
D. It can make waste advantageous.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Carvey?
A. Positive and hotheaded. B. Hard-working and humble.
C. Helpful and persistent. D. Broad-minded and accessible.
C 5. A 6. D 7. C

10 What attracts the readers as to printed books?
A. Value of senses. B. Knowledge storage. C. Bookshelves. D. Bookstores.
11. .Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Why E-books Are Convenient B. Why the Printed Book Is Back
C. Why Educational Fashions Change D. Why Digital Reading Becomes Popular
D 9. C 10. A 11. B
根据第二段“I love the way we now judge printed books using the language of the digital world. E-books may come with a “suite of guiding tools”, but it turns out that the best guiding devices are your fingers. You can use them to look through the pages forwards and backwards. To think, all this time, those devices have just been sitting there, hanging at the end of your arm.(我喜欢我们如今用数字世界的语言来评判纸质书籍的方式。电子书或许配有“一系列引导工具”,但事实证明,最出色的引导工具其实是你的手指。你可以用手指来前后翻阅书页。想想看,一直以来,那些设备都只是静静地躺在那里,悬在你的手臂末端)”可推知,作者喜欢使用这些电子时代的语言来评判纸质书,更多是为了在两者之间更好地作比较。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Fans of the e-book point out that digital text is easy to annotate.(电子书的爱好者们指出,电子文本便于……)”以及下面的举例“With it, favoured passages can be underlined and, if it’s a history book, comments can be written in the margin (页边), such as “Not so, according to The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.” Thus noted, such books can be left around for others to study, convincing family members of your insight.(通过它,读者可以将喜欢的段落用线条划出,如果是一本历史书,还可以在页边写下评论(比如“并非如此,据《罗马帝国的衰落与覆灭》所述”)。这样一来,这样的书籍就可以放在那里供他人研读,还能让家人看到你的见解)”可知,用铅笔可将喜欢的段落标注下划线,若是历史书籍,可在页边题写评论,由此可推断,annotate的词意为“加注”。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“And any properly thumbed book will always fall open at the sexiest scene. Also, the smell of old books in a second-hand bookshop is instantly remindful. Yes, it’s a mix of mound (霉味) and old paper, but to me it represents possibility.(而且任何被翻阅过的书页总是会在最精彩的情节处自动翻开。此外,在二手书店里,旧书散发出的气味会立刻让人想起过往。没错,那是一种霉味和旧纸张混合的味道,但对我来说,它代表着无限可能)”可知,文章提到触觉体验(用手指翻页)、二手书店里旧书的味道,说明了感官的价值让读者对纸质书籍产生兴趣。故选A。
根据第一段“The printed book is back. Recent studies have shown that students keep in mind more information when they read a hard-copy book compared to reading on a digital device.(纸质书又回来了。最近的研究表明,与在电子设备上阅读相比,学生阅读纸质书时能记住更多的信息)”以及文章主要介绍了印刷书籍的回归及其原因。故B选项“印刷书为何回归”是最佳标题。故选B。
D
C. Earth’s storage sites are not always reliable.
D. Climate change is the main threat to seed storage.
15. What’s Hagedorn’s attitude towards the lunar bio-repository?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
C. Indifferent. D. Opposed.
D 13. B 14. C 15. A

根据第一段中“The natural cold there can keep the samples frozen, aiming to create a bio-repository (生物库) for long term-species conservation.(那里的自然寒冷可以使样本保持冷冻状态,旨在建立一个用于长期物种保护的生物库)”和最后一段中“But Hagedorn believes that the current situation on Earth urgently calls for such a biodiversity repository, which is another way to protect Earth’s precious biodiversity.(但哈格多恩认为,地球上目前的情况迫切需要这样一个生物多样性库,这是保护地球珍贵生物多样性的另一种方式)”可知,研究人员想创建月球生物库是为了保护地球的生物多样性。
根据第二段中“Lead author Mary Hagedorn, a senior research scientist, has spent 20 years on coral cryo-preservation. A lunar bio-repository would extend this idea to a wider range of animals, possibly including endangered species and culturally important animals.(该研究的主要作者、高级研究科学家玛丽·哈格多恩花了20年时间进行珊瑚低温保存研究。月球生物库将把这个想法扩展到更广泛的动物种类,可能包括濒危物种和具有文化重要性的动物)”可知,关于生物多样性资源库的想法已经经过了几十年的发展。所以“The idea of a biodiversity repository has been incubated for decades.(建立生物多样性资源库的想法已经……几十年)”中划线词“incubated”的意思是“逐渐发展”,与B项“Developed”同义。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The scientists draw inspiration from the Global Seed Vault in Norway. There, more than one million seed samples are preserved underneath the permafrost, which naturally cools them. However, in 2017, it was flooded due to climate-change-related permafrost melting (融化), showing that Earth’s storage sites are weak.(科学家们从挪威的全球种子库中获得启示。在那里,超过一百万的种子样本被保存在永久冻土下,自然冷却它们。然而,2017年,由于与气候变化相关的永久冻土融化,它被洪水淹没,这表明地球上的储存地点并不可靠)”可知,从全球种子库的例子可以推断出地球上的储存地点并不总是可靠的。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But Hagedorn believes that the current situation on Earth urgently calls for such a biodiversity repository, which is another way to protect Earth’s precious biodiversity.(但哈格多恩认为,地球上目前的情况迫切需要这样一个生物多样性库,这是保护地球珍贵生物多样性的另一种方式)”可知,Hagedorn认为我们迫切需要一个生物多样性资源库,所以他对月球生物库持支持态度。故选A项。

“propose doing sth.”

“Legend has it that...” 故填it。
“on one’s back”是固定短语,意为“在某人的背上”,所以此处用介词 on。故填on。

Dear Chris,
I’m excited to share a truly rewarding experience with you. Last Friday, our school organized a labour activity to beautify our school environment and promote our labour awareness. Every student enthusiastically participated in the activity. We cleaned classrooms until they took a new look, collected scattered trash across the playground, and planted some small trees and flowers around campus.
Though physically exhausted, I was mentally rewarded with great satisfaction and quiet pride as I gazed at our beautiful campus. Through the activity, we not only realize the significance of our labour, but also attach more importance to environmental consciousness. I feel proud to be part of such a meaningful event.
Yours,

Farther up the river Macca edged his boat onto a pebbly little beach.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We were allowed to look but not touch, Maria told us. He patiently explained that the little monkey was still very scared, and any sudden contact could potentially frighten it even more. As we watched intently, its tiny body trembled slightly beneath the towel. Maria tenderly stroked its head with one finger, whispering gentle and calming words. Gradually, the monkey seemed to relax a little, and its eyes were blinking up at us trustingly. It was truly a heartwarming moment, seeing this weak and helpless creature find comfort in human care.
Farther up the river Macca edged his boat onto a pebbly little beach. There, Maria gently placed the now calmer monkey on the pebbles. The monkey sat for a moment, looking around cautiously as if trying to figure out where it was. Then, it suddenly ran quickly towards a nearby tree and rapidly scampered up. From a branch above, it peeked down at us, chattering softly as if saying thanks. We felt a sense of joy and relief, knowing that we had helped this young life begin a new chapter in its wild home.
