After a difficult time dealing with serious injuries, Marc Marquez, a 32-year-old Spanish motorcycle racer, has made a successful comeback to the circuit (赛车道). On March 16th, the six-time world champion won his second race of the 2025 MotoGP season at the Argentina Grand Prix.
Born in Cervera, Spain, in 1993, Marquez asked his parents for a bike before he turned 4 years old. In 2013, he started his MotoGP career with the famous team Repsol Honda, and won his first MotoGP World Championship in his first season. From 2014 to 2019, he dominated the sport, getting five out of six championships with Honda.
Marquez is 1.68 meters tall, and he earned the nickname “the Ant of Cervera” because of his small build but amazing ability to control the heavy and powerful motorcycle. He pioneered the “elbow down” riding style that is popular today, where riders lean over with their elbows (手肘) close to the ground. A focus on core body strength allows Marquez to control a 160-kilogram motorcycle at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour.
Just when Marquez was on the way to even greater success, a serious accident in the 2020 MotoGP season broke his right arm. Since then, he has struggled with a long, slow comeback from a terrible series of crashes and injuries. It seems that nothing could stop Marquez from trying to get back to his best. During his recovery, Marquez’s team had to take the wheels off his motorcycle and hide them so he wouldn’t try to ride. He’s not even afraid of the terrible crashes that nearly ended his career. “Maybe sometimes I’m taking too much risk but I can’t ride a motorcycle if I’m always worrying about crashing.” Marquez said.
With two wins this season, Marquez has had a strong start to his trying to secure his first world title since 2019. “I continue fighting because, in the end, my love for racing is more than pain I went through,” he added.
4. According to the passage, which of the following statements about Marc Márquez is TRUE?
A. He won his first MotoGP World Championship in 2014.
B. He was the first to develop the “elbow down” riding style.
C. His team didn’t need to worry about him riding during his recovery.
D. He is known as “the Ant of Cervera” only because of his hometown.
5. What does the underlined word “dominated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Was suitable for. B. Was the best in. C. Focused on. D. Took part in.
6. Why did Márquez’s team take away his motorcycle’s wheels?
A. Because he was injured in many accidents.
B. Because the motorcycle needed to be repaired.
C. Because they tried to prevent another terrible crash.
D. Because they wanted to prevent him from trying to ride.
7. According to the passage, which words best describe Marc Márquez?
A. Strong-willed and adventurous. B. Kind-hearted and careful.
C. Over-confident and organized. D. Easy-going and flexible.

Floating in the sky in a hot air balloon is cool, but have you ever thought about what makes it possible? The answer is helium (氦). It is one of the most important elements (元素) in our daily life, but most people don’t pay much attention to it. The world keeps running low on helium, with not enough available four times in the last 20 years, said the BBC.
The element is probably best known for filling balloons, while it is actually something with many uses in our society. For example, without liquid helium, MRI (核磁共振成像) machines won’t work. Thanks to the cooling power of helium, these machines can be very cold to take pictures inside our bodies and help doctors find illnesses like cancer. What’s more, the space industry uses helium to cool tools on satellites and clean rocket engines. Helium is also used for making computer chips, noted the BBC.
Although helium is very important for us, it can be a difficult element for a few reasons. It only comes from two places: from the sun and other stars, and from certain rocks under the ground. We can’t make it with today’s technology, so there’s only a certain amount of it. As it is very light, it can float into space and disappear. Even when we try to store it, liquid helium can go through tiny cracks, climb up walls, and get free easily, making it very hard for people to keep the element.
Luckily, some people remain positive about the future of helium. NBC News reported that new MRI machines are being made that use much less helium. Scientists are also finding ways to collect and reuse helium that has gone away. Nicholas Fitzkee, a researcher from Mississippi State University in the US, told the BBC, “It will allow us to get back about 90 percent of the helium that we use each year.” Also, a UK company named PEAK Scientific has made gas machines that use nitrogen (氮气) instead of helium for some science lab work.
8. Why does the author mention a hot air balloon in the first paragraph?
A. To stress the attraction of flying in a hot air balloon.
B. To explain the scientific rule behind how balloons fly.
C. To introduce the topic of helium in an interesting way.
D. To compare hot air balloons with other flying vehicles.
9. Besides filling balloons, which of the following is NOT mentioned as a use of helium?
A. Producing solar energy. B. Making computer chips.
C. Cleaning rocket engines. D. Cooling satellite instruments.
10. What makes helium a difficult element?
A. It is unable to mix with other gases.
B. It is expensive to produce and store.
C. It has a negative influence on the environment.
D. It can’t be produced by people and can get away easily.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. New methods to produce helium. B. People’s positive attitude towards helium.
C. Some solutions to the not-enough helium. D. The future development of helium industry.

When it comes to invertebrates (无脊椎动物), most of us think about bees, worms, or perhaps even a jellyfish. But did you know that at least two-thirds of invertebrates work the night shift, meaning many are unlikely to be seen? They use the light of the moon and stars to learn about the world and make important decisions. Many insects use the weak light of the moon or stars to tell which way is up when flying in complete darkness.
For centuries, artificial (人造的) light has been a sign of technological advance. Light has shaped human civilization. But while we enjoy its convenience, we often overlook the darker side of lighting: light pollution. It harms ecosystem, with serious results for wildlife, human health and energy use. A 2021 study found that caterpillar (毛毛虫) numbers were 52% lower in areas with street lights. The winter moth (蛾) is a small but important species. In early spring its caterpillars provide key food for blue tit chicks. But light pollution confuses the adult moths, breaks up mating and influences egg-laying, leading to fewer caterpillars. With falling caterpillar numbers, blue tits find it hard to feed their young.
In one sense, light pollution is quite easy to solve — we can simply not turn on the lights and allow the night to be lit naturally by moonlight. But in fact, this is mostly not possible as lights are meant to make humans’ lives easier, so humans are often not willing to give them up. If we cannot turn off the lights, there are other management approaches we can take to lessen their harm. We can control their number, make them less strong, and shorten the time they are on.
However, it remains unclear how much artificial light influences invertebrates, and whether they can get used to changes in time. These changes probably influence their health and life, so more studies are needed to understand what difficulties artificial light brings to them. We need experts from different fields to work together to understand the wider influence of artificial light on wildlife biodiversity and ecosystem health, and to find proper solutions.
12. What do we know about most of invertebrates?
A. They are dying out. B. They are active at night.
C. They use darkness to hide. D. They depend on natural light to live.
13. What does the 2021 study show?
A. The danger of street lights. B. The importance of caterpillars.
C. The challenge in wildlife protection. D. The influence of light pollution on ecosystem.
14. What does the author think of the other management approaches?
A. They are easy to apply. B. They are widely accepted.
C. They call for further research. D. They require immediate action.
15. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Night Animals: What Are Their Secret s?
B. Caterpillar Decrease: What Is the Real Cause?
C. Artificial Light: Should We Turn It Off Or Not?
D. The Night Shift: How Does Light Pollution Harm Nature?

C His team didn’t need to worry about him riding during his recovery.
D. He is known as “the Ant of Cervera” only because of his hometown.
5. What does the underlined word “dominated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Was suitable for. B. Was the best in. C. Focused on. D. Took part in.
6. Why did Márquez’s team take away his motorcycle’s wheels?
A. Because he was injured in many accidents.
B. Because the motorcycle needed to be repaired.
C. Because they tried to prevent another terrible crash.
D. Because they wanted to prevent him from trying to ride.
7. According to the passage, which words best describe Marc Márquez?
A. Strong-willed and adventurous. B. Kind-hearted and careful.
C. Over-confident and organized. D. Easy-going and flexible.
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. D 7. A

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. C

However it remains unclear how much artificial light influences invertebrates, and whether they can get used to changes in time.

The friend and the dog agreed, so the person posed with the dog in front of a bright blue door and then handed over five pounds as a thank-you. In that story, everybody had a good time. ____18____ “I was once woken up at 6 a.m. on Easter Sunday by a French teenager taking pictures outside,” Johnston says.
____19____ Johnston, for example, tries to understand travelers coming to her hometown. She remembers how she loved taking pictures of historic neighborhoods in Paris, Rome and the like. In fact, she recently found photos of herself as a teenager hanging out at the Notting Hill Carnival years before she moved to London herself. ____20____ “I feel lucky that it’s cool enough that people want to come where I live.”
A. If so, you’re not alone.
B. But there can be a darker side.
C. And she has seen all kinds of actions people take to get a perfect picture.
D. For her, nothing beats the pleasure to see so many people excited about it.
