Mary is having a conversation with Sara. But Mary and Sara are deaf, which means that they cannot hear. Still they understand each other. How?
Well, one way that people who are deaf communicate is by using sign language. Sign language takes the place of spoken words. People using sign language can actually talk faster than they spoke out loud.
Another way is through lip (嘴唇) reading. People who lip-read have learned to understand spoken words by reading the shapes and movements speakers make with their lips, mouths and tongues (舌头).
Some people who are deaf can also use hearing aids (助听器) or cochlear implants (人工耳蜗) to help them hear the sounds and words. Hearing aids usually fit outside the ear and make sounds louder. Cochlear implants are inside the ear. Often, children and adults with hearing aids or cochlear implants take lessons to learn to speak as normal people do.
46. According to the text, what can we learn about using sign language?
A. It is easier to learn than lip-reading.
B. It can be faster than speaking aloud.
C. It allows to communicate in the dark.
D. It helps improve hearing ability.
47. What can we infer (推断) about people with hearing aids?
A. They need to learn lip reading.
B. Their hearing aids stay inside ears.
C. They may learn to speak normally.

Humans have always dreamed of flying through the air. The dream came true in 1783 when a hot-air balloon carried its first passengers.
The movement of the balloon is largely controlled by the wind. The main control the balloon pilot has is to change altitude, moving the balloon up and down, in order to catch right winds. As bags of sand are thrown out, the balloon rises. As air is given out, the balloon drops.
Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier were two brothers who lived in France. They made the hot-air balloon fly for the first time successfully in 1783. The first balloon passengers were a sheep and a duck.
Hot-air balloons are still used for sport and adventure (探险). In 1999, Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones became the first persons to complete an around-the-world trip without stopping. Three years later, Steve Fossett became the first person to finish the trip alone.

“Scared? No! Why do you waste your time doing such silly things? People are only scared of you. No one likes you! Try to change your ways and you will have a better life,” said the sage. Hearing the words, the snake was deeply touched. He decided to change for the better.
A few days later, the sage visited the village again. But what he saw shocked him. The snake hurt. “What happened?” asked the sage. “I just followed your advice. I stopped scaring people and I even stopped hissing at them. But they beat me up all the time. What do I do?” the poor snake asked.

It was a busy day at the market. Many villagers were selling something. Just then, a snake came out and scared the villagers. As the villagers ran for their lives, the snake felt very happy and proud.
One day, the snake did the same thing to a sage. But the man bravely stood his ground. “Hiss (发嘶嘶声)! Aren’t you scared?” asked the snake.
“Scared?
“Oh, poor thing! I told you not to kill or scare people just for fun. But did I ever tell you not to hiss? You’re born with the power to hiss for your safety. Use it when needed but don’t abuse (滥用) it,” replied the sage.
