Cappadocia, Turkey Designated a World Heritage Site in 1985, Cappadocia is a place of flowing rock formations and stone-capped chimneys (狭缝) Consider taking one of the many hiking trails to get up close. Nearby, in the village of Uchisar are the ancient cave homes built by the people of the Bronze Age. Borobudur, Indonesia Borobudur is one of Indonesia’s most famous landmarks, included in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1991. Located on the island of Java, this massive temple complex was constructed in the 700s, but two to three hundred years later, it was abandoned, possibly due to volcanic eruptions in the area, and went relatively undisturbed for centuries. At the end of my final training run, I threw myself down on the floor the moment I got home, only to see my watch had failed me. Twenty-one miles briefly flashed on the screen before it went blank and disappeared forever. I screamed in pain. That tragic image of me crying on my living room floor pretty much sums up my relationship with exercise tracking technology. It can be a total joy to watch your data change as you get stronger and faster, but sometimes it became a stick for punishment. I would compare my pace with other people’s or criticize myself for not doing it 30 seconds faster. I never really recognized this as a problem. To me, tracking was the route to self-improvement, and the point was to be better. In the past year, “being better” has taken on a different meaning. My mental health dropped, and things like brushing my teeth became unimaginably difficult. Being better stopped meaning getting faster or stronger. It meant taking care of myself and feeling some joy. Once I started getting better, I reflected on what made me happy and what did not. So, I stopped tracking my runs and deleted all the data. I then found I genuinely love running. I run around my local park with a silly little smile. But I do not love running quickly. I do not like races. I do not want to be pushed to be faster. I now notice how my legs feel and how my mind feels afterwards — clear and focused. I notice the smell of the wild plants and the sunshine on my face. I am better. Sometimes I am worse. But either way I’m moving forward slowly and firmly, and that’s good enough. 14. What happened when the author got home after the final training run? A. Her watch broke down. B. She fell on the floor due to pain. C. Her watch failed to record her pace. D. She deleted all the data on her watch. 15. What changed the author’s attitude towards exercise tracking? A. Her thirst for running casually. B. Her change in life focus. C. Her comparison with others. D. Her self-improvement determination. 16. What does “being better” mean to the author now? A. Freeing herself from school tasks. B. Being more focused on her speed. C. Improving her overall well-being. D. Getting pleasure out of winning races. 17. What can we conclude from this passage? A. Sports promote happiness. B. Passion is the key to success. C. Success equals self-improvement. D. Adjustment brings happiness. C As an important part of our everyday lives, music is increasingly being used in medical treatment. Besides proving very useful in cancer treatment, managing long-term pain and even helping the brain recover after a stroke, researchers have been making great progress in using music to help patients with dementia (失智症). It reduces patients’ anxiety or stress, lifts their spirits, and improves their performance at work. So why does music appear to have such a powerful effect on people with dementia? About ten years ago, researchers discovered that when people listened to music, many areas of the brain took part in processing it. Research has also shown that music might help the brain and its connections grow strong again. It is believed that music could help people with dementia by fixing or strengthening damaged neural connections and cells. It’s not just any music that has a great effect on the brain, though. Familiar and favourite music has been shown to have the biggest influence on the way we feel and is closely connected with memory and emotions. This is because listening to our favourite songs helps to produce feel-good hormones (荷尔蒙) that give us a sense of pleasure. During and after listening to favourite music, people with dementia experienced less pain and anxiety, and their general feelings improved. Other researchers have even begun testing the effects of music training programs to support cognition for people with dementia. Results have been promising so far, with adults in the study showing improved conditions, compared to those who took part in just physical exercise. So, music is likely to continue to be a useful medical treatment for people with dementia. But based on what we know so far, it’s important that it comes from the patient’s own music collection and is used together with other medical therapies such as taking medicine. 18. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage? A. By presenting facts. B. By raising questions. C. By explaining reasons. D. By giving predictions. 19. What can drive music’s positive effects on dementia? A. The style of the music. B. The volume of the music. C. The length of the music. D. The familiarity with the music. 20. What can we learn about music treatment from the last two paragraphs? A. It can cure dementia completely. B. It works best with unfamiliar music. C. It must be combined with other treatments. D. It absolutely outperforms physical exercise. 21. Where is the text most probably taken from? A. A course plan. B. An art brochure. C. A medical textbook. D. A science magazine. D There has been a bitter argument within the Australian community over a horse racing event advertised on the Sydney Opera House. While some believe the Opera House is Australia’s “biggest billboard (大幅广告牌)” and should be used for economic gain, others are shocked that the government has allowed the national landmark to be polluted with branding. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sydney Opera House is an important Australian building recognized all over the world and one of the country’s most frequently visited tourist attractions. In the past, the Opera House was used to promote a handful of charities, cultural festivals, etc. However, the purpose of these has been to highlight events that bring advantage to ordinary people, not a single profiting brand. Some have argued that promoting brands on the sails of the Opera House is just like advertising on any other billboard or marketing space with the power to significantly encourage tourism and growth. While this may be true, if advertising continues to happen, the Opera House could risk losing its reputation, which could devalue the landmark and actually damage its tourism appeal. Although landmarks around the world such as the Eiffel Tower and Moscow’s Red Square have been used for advertising, they also caused some arguments among the public. For instance, a major fashion brand placed a giant branded suitcase in the center of Moscow’s Red Square; however, it was removed shortly afterwards as tourists complained it was so big that it blocked views of major landmark sites. The advertisement caused arguments among the public and finally failed to leave a positive impact. So what will advertising on the Opera House look like to international tourists? Will they be amazed and drawn to a wonderful country, or will they see advertising as something reducing the cultural value of a national symbol? We think it’s clear that our national treasures deserve the respect and admiration that come with them, and advertising should be limited to important causes, not campaigns for commercial gain. 22. What caused the heated debate among Australians? A. The giant billboard at the Opera House. B. The famous national landmark’s being polluted. C. The horse racing event held at the Opera House. D. The commercial advertisement on the Opera House. 23. What can be learned about the previous activities at the Opera House? A. They were in the public interest. B. They caught international attention. C. They were designed to attract tourists. D. They brought great economic benefits. 24. Why does the author mention Moscow’s Red Square? A. To present how companies benefit from attractions. B. To explain why tourists dislike billboards on landmarks. C. To show the negative effects of advertising on landmarks. D. To stress the various types of marketing strategies in attractions. 25. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Sydney Opera House: From Landmark to Billboard B. World Heritage Sites: The Global Advertising Debate C. National Treasures: Balancing Culture and Commerce D. A Successful Case: Advertising on World Heritage Sites Ⅳ. 阅读填空(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Four Ways to Get That Vacation Feeling in Two Days Going on vacation every week? It sounds like the wildest dream. First of all, a theme concert will be held, where you can enjoy a feast of music played by excellent student bands. Besides, instrument-experiencing workshops will be available. You can try different musical instruments under the guidance of professional teachers. What’s more, there will be a music-creation competition, encouraging you to show your creativity in music.
