Passage 3(山东省聊城市冠县2024-2025学年九年级上学期期末 )
It’s the eighth autumn since my father died. I don’t remember him saying “I love you.” in Chinese, his mother tongue. In the past, we always had a few communication problems. But when he introduced me to fries, ice creams, and sugary drinks in his love language, it didn’t seem to matter, even though his English wasn’t good, or my Chinese was bad.
Junk food became our secret language: some chicken nuggets (鸡块) and chips on a camping trip, a Happy Meal on our fishing trip; two liters of Cola before my mother came home. I felt honored (荣幸的) until I began to understand that he kept secrets from me too.
In the third grade, I came home and told him the dangers of cigarettes. He promised to stop smoking, but I kept smelling smoke in his clothes and car. My father was not virtuous (道德高尚的). He was a man of quick pleasure: fast food, cigarettes... I didn’t understand why he kept on these. I didn’t ask him why. I had plans for my future, I promised to never be addicted (上瘾) to smoking or drinking.
My father died at 49. I was sad that I never fully knew him. I used to be angry with my father for his bad habits. But the older I get, the more I see myself compromising (妥协的) too. And so, each autumn, I think: now I’m at the age at which my father followed his wife to a country where he didn’t speak the language; now I’m at the age at which he was fired from his job...
I can imagine the difficulties my father must have when he moved to the US. I can imagine how excited he felt to discover a place like McDonald’s. It’s his preferred place of everyday life. It was cheaper than fish, and much simpler than a long-distance phone call to Beijing, in which he had to hide his difficulties and his loneliness.
I can imagine how it might be happier to eat golden nuggets, even if they finally shorten our lives by a day or a week or a year—because first we have to get through this day, this week, this year.
The next time I think of my father, I’ll have a nugget or two or four. And in that moment, I will understand my father completely.

For most of my 15 years, my father usually said very little to my mother and me. He preferred watching football matches on TV to talking to his family.
Everything changed one morning. As soon as I came downstairs to breakfast, I could see that he wasn’t quiet as usual. “Can’t wait! FIFA World Cup! Big match! Must see!”
I quickly found out what all the excitement was about: Dad is a big football fan.
I had never been interested in football, but Dad’s excitement that morning made me more and more curious. I had to find out why this sport was making my father act like a five-year-old kid on his first trip to Disneyland.
Dad decided that we should all eat at a little German restaurant so that we could watch the World Cup while eating. The match started a few minutes after we entered the restaurant. As I was eating my meal, a loud noise came from the television. Surprised, I looked up at the TV. “Why is that man jumping up and down?” Dad patiently explained, “That’s Papa Bouba Diop, my son. It’s normal for them to jump up and down after they’ve scored.”
Dad explained almost everything to me. His simple answers were a thing of the past. I loved the new Dad! I watched the rest of the match, becoming more and more interested. When I told my father that I planned to watch more matches with him, he smiled and gave me a wink (眨眼). At last we had something in common.

Passage 8(山东省德州市禹城市2024-2025学年九年级上学期期末 )
This year’s bushfire (森林大火) season in Australia has brought damage like never before. The fires have been terrible for humans, and worse for animals.
Early on, most reports about the bushfires focused on the loss of land and cost to humans. Recently, people have become more aware of the effects of the fires on animals. Chris Dickman, a scientist at the University of Sydney, tried to find out how many animals might have been killed by the fires. The number he came up with was surprisingly large; over 1 billion animals. Fast animals, or those that can fly, may be able to escape a bushfire. Slow-moving animals like koalas, may not.
In New South Wales, around 8. 000 koalas about a third of the state’s koalas-are believed to have been killed. In other areas. like Kangaroo Island in South Australia, as many as 25. 000 may have died.
The loss of animals would be a tragedy (悲剧) anytime and anywhere, but it could be especially bad news it Australia. Because it is home to many special animals that can’t be found anywhere else. Scientists worry that the bushfires might put an end to some kinds of animals that were already in danger of dying out.
It’s not just about animals killed directly by the fires. Even when animals survive (幸存), it can be hard for them to stay alive in the world left behind by the fires. That’s because many of the places they live and their sources (来源) of food have been destroyed. For that reason, workers for Australia’s National Park are using helicopters (直升飞机) to drop sweet potatoes and carrots onto 12 different areas where rock wallabies (小袋鼠) live. Rock-wallabies often survive bushfires, but can have difficulty finding enough to eat after the big fire.
Other animals, like thousands of wild camels, are being killed on purpose in order to protect farms and homes. Because of the drought, thirsty camels have been invading (入侵) places where people live, looking for water. Insects and fish are also not included in the “over 1 billion” number. For fish, the worst could still be in the future. There is so much ash (灰烬) on the ground from the fires that when strong rains finally do arrive, rivers and lakes will be heavily polluted with ash.
31.Which kind of animal may have been able to escape the Australian bushfires?
A.Animals that can fly and run fast.
B.Slow-moving and tiny animals.
C.Animals that can’t be found anywhere else.
D.Animals that were already in danger of dying out.
32.Why do some animals may find it hard to stay alive after the bushfires?
A.Because they cannot find places to hide.
B.Because they were badly hurt in the bushfires.
C.Because the fires made the air became toxic (有毒的).
D.Because the fires destroyed their homes and food.
33.Why are thousands of camels being killed by people?

I had arrived at the airport about 30 minutes before check-in. It had been a very busy three days for me with lots of meetings. But then I was told the flight had been delayed (延误) because there was a problem with the plane.
As I sat waiting for my flight to be called, I reflected (思考) on my last meeting for the day. It was a very enjoyable lunch with an old business friend. We had not seen each other for over 12 years. Passage 2(山东省威海市某校2024-2025学年九年级上学期期末 )
I was sitting in a Beijing cafe drinking a coffee with my friend. We were at a table looking out a window into a hutong. Many people were walking past us, but one Chinese couple stopped and stared. I smiled and waved back. Then, to my surprise, they took a photo of us! The lady even came up to the window and posed in front of us for another photo. It was very funny and we were all laughing.
A few weeks later, I was visiting the beautiful coastal city of Xiapu with two friends. People stared at us and wanted to say hello everywhere we went. It was like we were famous people!
So why were we getting so much attention? I think it’s because even though there are many foreigners, like me, living in China today, they are still kind of “rare (罕见的)”. This is especially true in smaller cities, where there are fewer foreigners. This is probably why we were so popular in Xiapu, but didn’t get as much attention in Beijing.
But China is not the only place this happens. I have traveled to India, Brazil, Peru and even the United States and been treated differently, too.
Brazilians and US people always want to talk with you, but Indians are by far the most curious (有好奇心的). When I visited, children and adults were always staring and taking pictures. The best way to deal with it is just to smile, laugh and enjoy it!

A.He looked at other people.
B.He smiled and waved to them.
C.He posed for another photo.
7.What happened when the writer visited Xiapu?
A.He became famous.
B.He said sorry to everyone.
C.He caught the attention of many people.
8.Why did the writer think they were more popular in Xiapu than Beijing?
A.Because Xiapu sees fewer foreigners.
B.Because people in Xiapu are more friendly.
C.Because many foreigners work in coastal cities like Xiapu.
9.When the writer traveled to the US, people there enjoyed ______.
A.talking with him B.staring at him C.laughing at him
10.What’s the best title of this passage?
A.Traveling in China
B.A Foreigner’s Experience in China

To deal with it, he decided to leave his job and spend time writing a book about herbs.

Margaret Porter is a violinist and music teacher. According to her, the best age to start learning the violin is between three and six. She says, “It’s the time when you are learning about the world.” Margaret, who lives in London, likes to take pupils at three and four. However, she has made lots of exceptions for five-year-olds. She started teaching the violin in 1972 and she taught her children’s five-year-old school friends at first.
Margaret’s pupils have group lessons. Each group has about twelve pupils and each lesson takes an hour, once half a month. Each pupil also has one individual (个人的) lesson a week with her. Parents have to attend the classes. It is important that the parents take an interest in the lessons.
In Margaret’s opinion, it’s important for one to know why music sounds the way it does. Without knowing it, one can’t become a great musician at all. So from the earliest lessons, pupils in her class learn to play by ear. They do not even try to read music until they have been playing for several years. The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.

Martha seemed pretty nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words, Martha left the room quickly.

Passage 16(山东省济宁市任城区2024-2025学年九年级上学期期末 )
One day in 1903, French scientist Edouard Benedictus climbed high to get something on a high shelf in his laboratory. He carelessly hit an empty glass bottle and it dropped to the floor.
Benedictus climbed down, expecting a mess, but he found a surprise. The glass hadn’t broken into pieces! It had cracked (破裂的), but it had held together. Benedictus wondered why.
One of his students explained he had used the bottle to hold liquid (液体) plastic during an experiment. Then he had put it back on the shelf and forgotten to wash it. Later the liquid plastic dried (变干) itself. Benedictus realized the dried plastic had kept the broken glass from falling apart.
The same week, Benedictus read a report about a car accident in the newspaper. The car was a new and exciting invention then, and many people were driving fast on the roads. Unluckily, there were no traffic lights yet. When accidents happened, people were often hurt by flying broken glass. Suddenly, Benedictus thought of the broken bottle. Could his accident be something useful?
Benedictus spent a lot of time in the laboratory, trying to find out the best way to make safety glass for cars. Finally, Benedictus put some liquid plastic between two pieces of glass and made them stick together. When he hit it, the “glass-and-plastic sandwich” broke, but not into pieces.
Benedictus succeeded. His method of putting plastic between pieces of glass is still used today. And that’s how an unexpected meeting between an unwashed glass bottle and a careless scientist led to an invention that made us all safer.

A.People want to protect their water resources.
B.People want to protect their farms and homes.
C.Wild camels are dangerous to human beings.
D.Wild camels will pollute the water resources there.
34.What does the underlined phrase “on purpose” mean?
A.不小心的 B.措手不及的 C.有意的 D.毫无目的的
35.When is the worst for fish?
A.When the fire is burning. B.When the ash fell on the ground.
C.When heavy rain comes. D.When there is no more water.

So from the earliest lessons, pupils in her class learn to play by ear. They do not even try to read music until they have been playing for several years. I ran around table after table of hungry customers. “Cha siu bao (叉烧包),” I called out. Knowing I wanted to have some new experiences, my parents agreed to let me help at the restaurant on weekends.
After working for hours, I took my break and enjoyed Grandma’s cooking at the tiny table on the ground behind the restaurant. As I was about to eat my food, I noticed something strange. Our bins (垃圾箱) had been knocked over. “How could these have fallen?” I wondered. After having my meal, I found my dad. We quickly picked up the mess and went back to the restaurant. When we came to the back of the restaurant again, the bins had been kicked to the ground. So I found three heavy rocks and placed them on the top of the bins.
But the next morning, the bins were kicked to the ground again. “Why does this keep happening?” I looked around carefully to hope to find someone, but I failed. Finally I noticed two yellow eyes staring at me. It was a cat. The cat was trying to get the half-eaten Cha siu bao inside the bins. “So you are the one that keeps leaving a mess for us to clean up,” I said.
Suddenly it rained heavily. The cat hid under the table. I went to the restaurant and asked Grandma for some food. I walked quickly to the cat and fed it. The cat liked the bao very much. Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked,
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat, Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed pretty nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words, Martha left the room quickly.
When Martha left her alone. Mary decided to explore the house. She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

Experts work hard to take care of the Mogao Grottoes and learn more about them. Fan Jinshi is one of them. People call her the “Daughter of Dunhuang”.
Fan Jinshi was born in Beijing in 1938. Her father was a student of Tsinghua University and had a strong interest in Chinese classical art and culture. So Fan showed great love for Chinese culture when she was young. She studied in the Archaeology Department (考古专业) in Peking University from 1958 to 1963. Then she started working at Dunhuang Academy and has worked there ever since.
After 30 years’ hard work, Fan and her team have made a digital (数字的) protection system—“Digital Dunhuang”, including digital photo shooting, photo collections and more. This may be one of the most useful ways to protect the Mogao Grottoes. Until recently, “Digital Dunhuang” has enjoyed more than seven million visits from around the world on the Internet. In 2018, Fan got the title of “Reform Pioneer over the 70-year History of New China” for her efforts to cultural protection.
On May 4th, 2023, Fan Jinshi returned to Peking University and brought back 10 million RMB to set up the Fan Jinshi Education Fund (基金会) to support the research of Dunhuang Studies. “Money should be spent in the right way,” she said. “Hopefully, the setting of the fund can help Dunhuang Studies at university, so it can raise cultural confidence.”
