Passage 2
(22-23九年级上·重庆江津·期末)People are always afraid of making mistakes. But sometimes it’s good to make mistakes, and here are the reasons.
First, one good thing about mistakes is that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things. When you are trying new things, you are growing up. If you never try new things, how can you do better? How can you make new things? Looking around, you’ll find everything you see is the result of someone trying new things.
Another good thing about mistakes is when you are making mistakes, you are learning. Edison tried 10,000 times before he made the light bulb (灯泡). People asked him how he felt about so many failures (失败). He said that he learned 10,000 materials that didn’t work.
Finally, when you make mistakes, you are much closer to success. It doesn’t mean that you can make mistakes with no thinking. In fact, when you try new things, you have to think them over. So you can keep away from some other mistakes.
There is an old saying: if you are not making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough. So be brave, and make mistakes to grow up, to learn and to succeed.
1.Does the writer think it’s good to make mistakes?
2.What did Edison say about his failures?
3.How many good things about making mistakes does the writer talk about?

(24-25九年级上·广西河池·期末)New rules and behavior standards (行为标准) for middle school students came out. Who are the most excellent students? Middle schools use a new way to decide that. The following are some of the new rules. 主题03 人与自我—行为标准
Tell the truth. Have you ever copied others’ work during an exam? Don’t do it again. That’s not what an honest student should do. If you played computer games for two hours in your room, don’t tell your parents you were doing your homework.
Love animals. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate it? You can join! In that way, you can learn more about animals and learn how to protect them.
Care about others. When your classmates are in trouble, remember to give them a hand. You know a friend in need is a friend indeed. Try to do more for others.
Use the Internet carefully. Try to stay away from web pages that are bad for you. Find good websites and use them for homework.
Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you can discover a new planet someday. Don’t look down on new ideas. You should welcome them because new ideas can make life better.
1.What can’t we do during an exam?
2.Is there a Bird Loving Month in China?
3.When should we give a hand to our classmates?
4.Why should we welcome new ideas?

Passage 1 主题04 人与社会—文化与习俗
(23-24九年级上·辽宁沈阳·期末)“May we all blessed with longevity. Though miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together (但愿人长久,千里共婵娟)”, wrote Su Shi, a poet during the Song Dynasty, in his well-known poem to his younger brother Su Zhe.
The moon is at its brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar (阴历). On this day, people celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been enjoying great popularity all over the country.
In ancient China, that day was a harvest (收获) festival because crops (庄稼) were harvested during that period. It was a time for relaxation and celebration.
Just like Thanksgiving in Western countries, families also try to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy they are, people will try to return home for the celebration.
The Mid-Autumn has its own special food just as other traditional Chinese holidays. People eat moon cakes with fillings such as sugar and eggs. The round shape of the cake makes it look like the full moon. The full moon and moon cakes stand for family reunion (团聚).
With the beautiful moon up in the sky, people sit together, enjoy the full moon, eat moon cakes and fruits, share the stories, and express the best wishes for the family members and friends who live far away.
1.Who did Su Shi write the poem to in Paragraph One?
2.Why was the Mid-Autumn Festival a harvest festival in ancient China?
3.Do Thanksgiving and the Mid-Autumn Festival have anything in common?
4.What other traditional Chinese festivals do you like? List one of them and tell the reason. (Write 30 words or more)
Passage 2
(21-22九年级上·重庆开州·期末)
Throughout history, people have used jewelry(珠宝)to make their clothes look more special. Jewelry was, and still is in fashion all over the world.
In South Africa, men in the Ndebele tribe(部落)often gave their wives jewelry made of silver or gold rings. Ndebele women wore necklaces(项链)around their necks and bracelets(手镯)around arms. Rings were even worn on their legs. The rings showed wealth(财富). A woman with many rings had a richer husband. In the past, women only took the rings off when their husbands died.
Today Ndebele women still wear the rings, but not all of the time.
People in India have been wearing jewelry for more than 5, 000 years. In the past, both men and women wore a lot of jewelry. Women wore as many as 50 bracelets at a time! Today, men stopped wearing so much jewelry in India, but for women jewelry continues to be very important. Also, jewelry means safety in India. If a family has trouble with money, they can always sell their jewelry.
In ancient China, people believed that jewelry meant wealth and good luck to them. The more jewelry they had, the richer they seemed to be. Also, jewelry has some special meanings. People used to give the new born baby some jewelry, which was often made of jade(玉石), as a gift. They believed that the jade used in their jewelry was alive and that it could keep bad things away. Many Chinese people today still believe this.
1.Do men in India still wear so much jewelry today?
2.When did women in South Africa take the rings off in the past?
3.What did jewelry mean to Chinese in ancient China?
4.Do you think jewelry is important to you in your life? Why or why not?
(22-23九年级上·重庆綦江·期末)Jack is a businessman. His main task is to sell “Living Machines”. He is very interested in clean water. He is also interested in saving money. So it’s natural that he is to be a developer of a small and affordable system (系统) to clean waste water. His “Living Machine” can clean waste water in your home. 主题05 人与自然—科技
The “Living Machine” is a system for cleaning waste water. The waste water goes into a big plastic tank where bacteria (细菌) start to break down the waste. A few days later after it is dealt with, the water is brought into a greenhouse filled with plants and fish. With the help of sunlight, the plants and animals remove more chemicals from the water, making it cleaner. Then the water can be reused for washing or bathing. It can’t be used for drinking and cooking. But the water is clean enough for watering the flowers, washing the dog, or even for bathing or swimming.
The advantage of this technology is that it is affordable and good for the environment. If you have enough homes and businesses use “Living Machines”, you’d better buy it. It can help to use less fresh water. It can help keep the water supply unpolluted, too.
1.Is the “Living Machine” too expensive for people to buy?
2.What is this “Living Machine” used for?
3.How does the “Living Machine” work ?
4.Do you think Jack’s invention is perfect? Why or why not?
(22-23九年级上·北京大兴·期末)After school, it’s very difficult for Vishal Singh to make a choice. He knows he should really go on with his homework, but the Internet is so attractive that he can’t really pay much attention to his study. 主题06 人与社会—青少年问题
“Students have always faced distractions(分心) and time-wasters,” writes Matt Richtel in the New York Times. He says that computers are a real challenge for students. They need to pay more attention to their learning.
Students say that their parents are worried about the distractions and try to control their computer time. But it is still difficult to manage the time of using computers.
Teachers at Woodside commonly think technology makes students difficult to concentrate(集中精力) in class, but they are divided over whether computer and the Internet are the solutions.
In Richtel’s article, English teacher Marcia Blondel feels disappointed with her students. She isn’t able to get them to read 30 pages of a book for homework. In order to solve this problem, she asks them to take part in a read-aloud of the book in class.
But as some teachers express their worries over students’ digital diets, seeing it as a way, they are trying to use technology in the classroom to draw the attention of these 21st-century students. The headmaster of Woodside High School, David Reilly, asks teachers to build websites to communicate with students. The students are allowed to use computers., smart phones or other new technology to interact(互动) with their teachers. It’s convenient for them to search for some useful materials that they need before class. With the help of the new technology, the students have more chances to share their ideas with each other and spend less time on video games. So, they pay more attention to their study and they don’t show up with bleary-eyes(睡眼朦胧的) any more. Mr. Reilly also spends a large amount of money building up a multimedia(多媒体) centre and introduce new courses like the digital audio recording(数码录像) class.
“We try our best to take back their attention and make them concentrate on their study,” he says. “To a degree, we’re using technology to do it.”
Some schools are looking to use the Internet to encourage students to study.
1.What’s the trouble with Vishal Singh?
2.How do the teachers feel about their students?
3.Why are the teachers trying to use new technology?
4.What may happen to you if you spend too much time on the Internet? How would you like to deal with it?

(24-25九年级上·北京顺义·期末)Did you know that some people don’t do their reading assignments (指定的作业)? It’s shocking, but it’s true. Some students don’t even read short texts that they are assigned in class. There are many reasons for this. They may be distracted or bored. They may be unwilling to focus. They may be unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today. Here’s why.
Reading stimulates (刺激) your mind. It is like a workout for your brain. When people get old, their muscles become worse. They get weaker and their strength leaves them. Exercise can prevent this loss. The same thing happens to people’s brains when they get older. Reading strengthens your brain and prevents declines (下降) in brain power and speed.
You can benefit from reading in the near-term too. Reading provides knowledge. Knowledge is power. Therefore, reading can make you a more powerful person. You can learn to do new things by reading. Do you want to make video games? Do you want to design clothing? Reading can teach you all this and more. But you have to get good at reading, and the only way to get good at something is to practice.
Read everything that you can at school, regardless of whether you find it interesting. Reading expands your vocabulary. Even a “boring” text can teach you new words. Having a larger vocabulary will help you better express yourself. You will be able to speak, write, and think more intelligently. What’s boring about that?
Do not just doubt a text because it is unfamiliar to you. Each time you read, you are exposed to new ideas and perspectives (看法). Reading can change the way that you understand the world. It can give you a broader perspective on things. It can make you worldlier. You can learn how people live in faraway places. You can learn about cultures different from your own.
Reading has a calming effect. It is good for your state of mind. It can lower your stress levels and help you relax. You can escape (摆脱) from your troubles for a moment when you read, and it’s a positive escape. The benefits of reading far outweigh those of acting like a fool. So do yourself a favor: the next time you get a reading assignment, take as much as you can from it. Squeeze it for every drop of knowledge that it contains. Then move on to the next one.
1.What are the benefits of reading for our brain?
2.How can we get good at reading?
3.How can reading improve our state of mind?
4.What do you think of reading? Why? (Please give two reasons.)

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·北京通州·期末)Research has shown that adults undervalue the influence of random (随意的) acts of kindness. They think that their actions won’t make too much of a difference. But small acts of kindness have more influence than they think.
In 2023, researchers Margaret Echelbarger and Nick Epley published a study. It described an experiment they did to find out if kids also undervalued the influence of random acts of kindness.
The experiment took place at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, in Chicago. Researchers spoke with 101 kids who were visiting the museum. Each kid was offered two pencils. The kids could take both pencils home. Or they could perform an act of kindness: allowing the researchers to give one of the pencils to a stranger. The kid could point out the person who should get the pencil.
Before giving away the pencil, the researchers asked the kids to guess how “big” their acts of kindness would feel to the person who got the pencil. Would the person be happy? Or would the gift feel like no big deal? Many kids had trouble guessing. Some of the kids said, “I’d like to give my pencil… but I’m not sure how they’re going to feel.”
People were happy to receive the pencils. In fact, they were much happier than the givers guessed. Besides, the givers said they felt a sense of satisfaction (满足) after doing a good deed (行为). “It shows the power of these small, random acts of kindness,” Echelbarger said. “Like, ‘You could have chosen anyone, but you chose me.’”
Echelbarger and Epley’s study proves that doing good feels good. This is true for the kid on the receiving end of a good deed as well as for the kid who performs it.
Echelbarger hopes the study will encourage kids to spread kindness, especially in ways that might feel small or unimportant. She said people were usually thankful when someone said hello, held a door for them, or offered an unexpected compliment (赞美).
1.Why did Margaret Echelbarger and Nick Epley do an experiment in 2023?
2.What was each kid in the experiment offered?
3.How did the kids in the experiment perform an act of kindness?
4.Would you like to do small acts of kindness? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)

Tough Guy: A race to the limit
What is Tough Guy?
Every January, more than 3,000 people take part in one of the most difficult races on Earth: the Tough Guy competition. To finish the course, players need to run, swim and climb 15 kilometres. It is a special race because these runners have to crawl (爬) through tunnels, run across a field of nettles (荨麻) and jump over fire. What’s more, the competition takes place in January, so temperatures are freezing—sometimes as low as -6℃. But people travel from all over the world to take part in it.
Why do people take part?
The competition is very dangerous and every year there are accidents. Injuries like broken bones and cuts are common. The race is very hard: one-third of players do not finish it. Runners have to be fit and healthy. Most people train all year to prepare for the race. It is also the first race like it in the world. Many people take part in the competition because it is so famous. In order to make the competition stay exciting and challenging, the organizers make some changes to the race and add new things every year.
The course
The diagram shows an example of the Tough Guy course. First, players run for 1 kilometre along a muddy road. Next, they crawl under low net s on the ground. After the nets, the runners jump off a high platform into a lake and swim for another 1 kilometre. After swimming, they run across a field of fire and jump over small bonfires (火堆). Next, players must crawl through a long tunnel. The tunnel is partly underwater. Finally, the runners run 2 kilometres through nettles before they reach the finish line.

(23-24九年级上·辽宁锦州·期末)What is adolescence (青春期)? When does it start? It starts when you are aged between about ten and thirteen. Here are some changes about you during adolescence. You may not want to spend as much time with your parents as you used to. You want to do more things on your own. In the past, your parents made decisions for you. But now you want to decide for yourself and don’t want to be told what to do. 主题5 人与社会—青少年问题
All these changes are completely normal, but they will influence your relationship with your parents. So what can you do to make it better?
Firstly, your parents will feel much better if you let them know that you still love them. Remember that they don’t have the small child you used to be. They may not say so, but they probably feel something is missing. So try to show your love to them from time to time.
Secondly, try to agree to rules. You may feel these rules are not necessary, but your parents just want to make sure you stay safe. Once you agree to the rules, try to follow them.
Thirdly, try to understand why they feel upset about your behavior. Do your parents get angry when you spend three hours talking with friends and leave your homework till the last minute? That’s probably because they want you to do well at school.
Finally, it’s all about communication! Keep talking to your parents, tell them about what you did today, let them know where you are going, and ask for advice if you need.
1.When does adolescence usually start?
2.What does the writer think of the changes during adolescence?
3.How many suggestions does the writer give us to have a better relationship with parents during adolescence?

【答案】1.Reading stimulates our mind, strengthens our brain and prevents declines in brain power and speed. 2.By practicing. 3.It can lower our stress levels and help us relax. 4.I think reading is extremely beneficial. Because it broadens our knowledge and enhances our language skills.

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·北京通州·期末)阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Research has shown that adults undervalue the influence of random (随意的) acts of kindness.
【答案】1.To find out if kids also undervalued the influence of random acts of kindness. 2.Each kid was offered two pencils. 3.By allowing the researchers to give one of the pencils to a stranger. 4.Yes.
