Sometimes a little self-criticism (自我批评) is not a bad thing. We can learn much from our mistakes. However, too much of it may result in health problems. When self-criticism becomes too much, it can turn into negative self-talk. Negative self-talk is that little voice in your head. It says you are not good enough.
Dr. Hugh, a scientist said that some good students who study hard usually do not do well in a test because of negative self-talk.
Lindsay was one of Hugh’s best students. She came to class early, took part in discussions and did all her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Hugh asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very nervous. She was not sure that she knew the right answers. This is an example of negative self-talk. Dr. Hugh turned Lindsay’s negative self-talk into positive (积极的) questions. During a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself: Why do I remember everything I study for an exam? ★ ?
Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an “A” on the final exam in Hugh’s class.
Dr. Hugh saw students work out fine with his method. And he does not just help his students. He also advises his friends and neighbors to give up negative self-talk in their life. He once said, “We can program ourselves for success in class or in life, or we can program ourselves for failure.”

We spend most of our time with friends we like. What kind of people are welcomed by others, then? There are people that can always attract (吸引) you. By being with them just once, you start to like them. If you wonder why they attract people and want to be a person like them, you should learn from them.
Firstly, everybody wants to be happy and nobody wants to spend their time with an unhappy person. If you are with a happy person, you are more likely to be happy, too. This is what we call mood linkage (心境联结). So if you are a happy person, many people are willing to spend their time with you.
Next, everybody needs someone to encourage them, because sometimes in our lives we meet some bad things. So if you always choose to cheer others up with encouraging words or actions, they will be glad to spend time with you.
Lastly, you are not a true friend if you don’t give a hand to your friends when they need help. You should always be helpful. One day when you need help, they will be there for you, too.

Passage 1
Story with no end
Bastian Balthazar Bux is a boy with a problem. In fact, he has many problems. His father is doing a bad job raising him, but that’s because Dad has a problem of his own: he cannot get over the death of his wife. Bastian’s life at school is troubled too. The other kids pick on him, leading him to skip school a lot.
It doesn’t sound like a fantasy story so far, does it? Fantasy is supposed to take us away from the unpleasantness of life, not rub our noses in it. But this is just where the fantasy begins. One day, running away from bullies at school, Bastian hides in a bookshop. There he finds a book that appeals to him, and he steals it and takes it home.
Bastian becomes immersed in the book. It drags him in, just as we are dragged into fantasy books. The book he reads, like the book we read, is called The Neverending Story.
The story spellbinds Bastian. It tells of a land called Fantastica. Fantastica is sick, and the person most sick is its ruler, The Childlike Empress.
The reason for the sickness is a kind of war that is being waged on Fantastica by a force called Nothing. The Empress asks a boy, Atreyu, to help her battle Nothing before it conquers Fantastica.
But what of Bastian, sitting hidden away, reading the story from his stolen book? He becomes part of the tale himself. The Empress gives Bastian a vital job: to join forces with Atreyu in the struggle against Nothing. Now this book, which began as the story of a lonely, bullied, unhappy boy, really becomes a fantasy.
But even though Bastian has now entered the pages of a fantasy fiction book, he has brought his troubles with him. He has problems dealing with the challenges brought by his new life. When The Childlike Empress gives him a magic gem called Auryn, he abuses it for selfish ends.
Once Bastian finds his true self, he can help the Empress, Atreyu and Fantastica and make his way back into the real world.
Like Bastian, we can find ways to solve our troubles with enough commitment. In The Neverending Story, young readers can find a wonderful fantasy that also offers a positive message about their own world.

The Amazing Journey of Arctic Terns
Arctic terns are small birds with a big adventure. Every year, they travel from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back—this is the longest migration of any animal on Earth. The round trip can be over 70,000 kilometers!
Why do they make such a long journey? In summer, the Arctic is full of daylight, and there are plenty of insects for them to eat. They lay their eggs there. When winter comes, the Arctic gets dark and cold, so the terns fly south to the Antarctic, where it is summer and food is still easy to find.
The journey is not easy. They must fly over oceans and deserts, facing strong winds and hungry predators. But Arctic terns are smart. They follow the sun and stars to find their way. They also fly in groups to stay safe.

Passage 3
Plains wanderers are small, rare birds that live in grasslands. Unlike most birds, female plains wanderers are larger and stronger than males. Females take the lead in protecting their nests and babies from animals like foxes, while males often sit on the eggs to keep them warm. These birds are hard to find because their feathers blend into the grass, making them look like part of the landscape. Sadly, their numbers have been dropping because people are taking over their grassland homes for farms and cities.
To save them, scientists are using AI. The key is the birds’ calls. Mother wanderers make soft sounds to talk to their chicks and warn about danger. These calls are quiet and easy to miss, but AI can hear them clearly. Scientists put microphones in the grasslands to record sounds all day and night. Then they put these recordings into a computer program. The AI learns to tell the wanderers’ calls apart from other noises, like the wind blowing or insects chirping. This helps scientists find where the mother birds are and how many chicks they have.
“AI helps us monitor these birds without bothering them,” says Dr. Lee, who leads the project. “We can find the most important areas for them and work to protect those places.” Once, the AI helped scientists find a hidden nest with three baby birds. Without AI, they might not have found it. Thanks to this technology, there is new hope for these rare birds, showing that AI can be a powerful tool in saving wildlife.

话题6 休闲活动与经历
Passage 1
It was a summer, but what a summer.
I once had my own vegetable garden. It was my first and my last since I could never get to the country place often enough to keep my eye on it. Anyway, the second summer, the bugs found us and ate my arugula (芝麻菜). I could see the garden needed more care than I could give it, and I stopped.
But the first season was pure heaven. I still remember sitting in that garden, the fresh air on my face, the silence pouring into my ears. Sometimes I would sing, quietly at first and then louder, which brought a small herd of curious cows trotting (小跑) my way to hang their huge heads over the wire fence 20 feet away, staring at me.
Mostly I was sitting down, picking green beans, boiling them, slapping (拍) on a little butter and salt and eating them without anything else. And wanting to sing opera again because they were so good. I dug below the potato plants, stole a few baby potatoes from each plant, and boiled them too. Just butter and salt. So good.
There was too much food in the late summer. My relatives refused to accept any because they had received a lot from others. The neighbours all grew the same thing I did, so they didn’t need any, and when I took it back to the city, no friends wanted it. They spent their summer weekends in the country and had their own gardens.
I never had another garden after that first one. There was a time when I thought life was too short for all my dreams. The choices were too many, and my heart ached that anything had to end or that I had to choose between one thing and another. How could I live on a farm and also travel around the world? It seemed that life fully enjoyed could only be full of loss.
Nevertheless, nothing was lost. These memories are a permanent (永恒的) part of me. I often relive that one wonderful summer and my amazing vegetable garden as I did while writing about it for you tonight.
Little by little, the truth became okay with me: someone who loves many things can’t make all of them permanent. You have to walk away from one thing so you can have another. Still, I never expected total absence (缺乏) of sense of loss.
And then I got it. That one summer with my fresh, delicious veggies, all that time to sit on the ground for hours and the unexpected company of cows that loved opera had filled a space in my life that had always been empty before that.
But never has it been empty again.

Passage 2
1.How does the writer lead in the topic in paragraph 1?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving an example.
C.By asking a question. D.By making a comparison.

C.When should I solve the problem D.What difficulties will I face
4.The underlined words “his method” in paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A.visiting Dr. Hugh more often B.using positive self-talk
C.getting higher points in exams D.thinking about all the mistakes
5.What’s the structure of the passage?

A. B. C. D.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A 4.B 5.A
【语篇导读】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了负面自我对话对学生成绩和自信心的影响,并通过Lindsay的故事展示了通过积极自我对话来提高成绩和恢复自信的方法。
1.推理判断题。根据“Sometimes a little self-criticism (自我批评) is not a bad thing.”及“However, too much of it may result in health problems.”
Hugh turned Lindsay’s negative self-talk into positive (积极的) questions.”可知,Dr. Hugh把Lindsay消极的自言自语变成了积极的问题。而前文提到“During a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself: Why do I remember everything I study for an exam?”都是积极的自我对话,所以空格处也应是积极的自我提问。选项A“为什么我的答案是正确的”符合这一要求。故选A。
4.词义猜测题。根据“Dr. Hugh turned Lindsay’s negative self-talk into positive (积极的) questions.”、“Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an ‘A’ on the final exam in Hugh’s class.”及“He also advises his friends and neighbors to give up negative self-talk in their life.”
故选A。
Passage 3
It feels good if people around you want to be your friends. So if you want to attract people and make more friends, just have a try. You will also enjoy being a better person.
1.What can be an example of “mood linkage” according to the passage?
A.You may feel sad when you are with sad people.
B.You will be happy to see someone lose his games.

话题4 文学、历史与传说

Passage 1
Scientists are amazed by these birds. Their bodies are built for long flights—they have strong wings and light bones. Even young terns can make the journey without their parents guiding them. This amazing ability has helped them survive for millions of years.

1.Why did the author stop to plant a veggie garden?
