A Volunteering is a good way for teenagers to make a difference and meet new people. Here are a few volunteer opportunities that you could encourage your teen to take up. Help a local food bank Food banks always welcome donations (捐赠) and new volunteers. They provide perfect volunteering opportunities for those who are interested in helping the homeless. Your teen would be involved in anything, from preparing meals to working behind the scenes to repack donated food items, serving food, and carrying boxes. Help at a soup kitchen A soup kitchen is one of the places where the hungry can get free or affordable meals (usually soup and bread). Most soup kitchens run mainly on donations and the generosity of people. As a soup kitchen volunteer, your child may clean the tables and plates, help distribute food, cook food, and more. Volunteer for Meals on Wheels By volunteering for Meals on Wheels, your teen will deliver nutritious meals to the elderly or the disabled. It’s perfect for teens who have just received their driving license and love any reason to get behind the wheel! 1. What do a local food bank and a soup kitchen have in common? A. The locations are approachable. B. Volunteers need to price the food. C. They provide food for volunteers. D. They have the same sources of food. 2. Who would be the most suitable for Meals on Wheels? A. Lucy, who prefers cooking. B. Linda, who likes drawing. C. Jack, who is fond of driving. D. Peter, who is good at playing football. 3. Who are the targeted readers of the passage? A. Teenagers. B. Parents. C. Volunteers. D. Social workers. B Our room was on the second floor but you could still hear the roar of the ocean and see the stars at night. I used to take long walks along the water. The food in town was wonderful and the people were very friendly. The area was very quiet, peaceful and fairly deserted (空寂无人的). The last evening of our vacation, however, we all heard strange footsteps following closely behind us as we were walking up to our room in the holiday center. We turned around and noticed a fairly young man moving very rapidly across the beach and getting close to us. He was tall and wore a baseball cap. We couldn’t see his face and he was approaching (接近) us very rapidly. The man’s actions made my dad very anxious. Dad warned us that we’d better try to make it to our hotel room as quickly as possible. I didn’t like my dad’s voice. I could hear anxiety in it. It was late and we were all alone. We didn’t have any cellphones on us. I never saw Dad as anxious as he was then and I knew that something was terribly wrong. The sense of fear started to overwhelm Mom and me. We had had such a good time in town. Now, the night was rapidly turning into a dangerous situation. We could hear the man’s footsteps getting closer. Dad’s face was almost pale. The so-called intruder (侵入者) had moved nearer and nearer when all of a sudden, the nearby vending (自动贩卖) machine started going crazy and spitting out cans of soda! The noise actually scared the intruder and he ran out of sight. My parents were shaking, but we all turned around to see who had put money into the vending machine downstairs, and actually saved us, but no one was around at all. Not a soul. It’s one vacation I will never forget. 4. Where did the author spend her vacation? A. At the seaside. B. Near a lake. C. In a village. D. In a mountain. 5. What happened on the last evening of their vacation? A. They lost their way. B. Their cellphones were missing. C. Their money was stolen. D. They were followed by a stranger. 6. What was the author’s father’s reaction on the last evening of their vacation? A. He was somewhat fearful. B. He didn’t know what to do at all. C. He didn’t take what happened seriously. D. He was quite calm and controlled the situation. 7. What helped them get out of the trouble? A. Their quick action. B. Timely help from a young man. C. The young man’s warning. D. The noise from the vending machine. C Training was cruel, as Penny Lee Dean prepared for what would be a record-setting swim — regardless of sex — across the English Channel in 1978. “Your hands cramp (痉挛), your legs cramp,” she remembers. While the cold was bone-chilling, overcoming it has been essential to her success as a record-breaking swimmer. An ability to tolerate extreme cold is one of the advantages that women may have in this sport, as their distribution of fat is helpful for regulating body temperature in cold water. Dean believes that any upper hand women might have in open-water swimming over long distances is more about mental adaptation and the ability to bear discomfort than about insulation (阻隔). In ultradistance events, the ability to handle more factors, from weather to pain, becomes particularly important. In fact, women can outperform or perform similarly to men in a range of competitive events. From ultrarunning to shooting sports, in some competitions women have the edge. Cassio Rippel, the ISSF Athletes Committee Chair, says that while men’s muscles tend to give them more staying power, women’s lower body mass and lower centre of gravity, on average, allow them better balance control. The rifle (步枪) events are the most sex-balanced of the three types of shooting events in the Olympics, according to Rippel. The nearly century-long history of the Olympics is also a history of the growth of female empowerment. An increasing number of female athletes have broken gender barriers, achieving remarkable success in traditionally male-dominated sports. The Paris Olympics are the first Olympics to have equal numbers of female and male athletes. This is also an opportunity to think carefully about what gap s in inclusion still remain. While much of the science of sex and performance may be unsettled, one thing that’s very clear is that more research needs to involve women. The path toward greater inclusion has not been straight, and more questions than answers remain about the role of sex in athletic performance. 8. What challenge did Dean face when breaking the record? A. The long distance. B. The low temperature. C. The extra body fat. D. The intense training. 9. What advantage may women have in long and open-water swimming? A. Strong awareness about keeping warm. B. Superior flexibility to tough situations. C. Inborn talent for long distance swimming. D. Absolute concentration on swimming path. 10. What does the underlined phrase “have the edge” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Appear weaker. B. Seem conservative. C. Take the lead. D. Show less pressure. 11. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Women’s potential in sports. B. Sports suitable for women. C. Views on gender and sports. D. Females in the Olympics. D Insomnia (失眠) is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (金属链毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective. A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph. They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket. The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you’re anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down. “While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness,” says the lead researcher. 12. How does the author introduce the topic? A. By analyzing causes. B. By raising a question. C. By giving an example. D. By describing symptoms. 13. What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research? A. Its process. B. Its background. C. Its findings. D. Its limitations. 14. Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep? A. It monitors people’s heart rate. B. It gives off comforting chemicals. C. Its pressure calms people down. D. Its material reduces people’s anxiety. 15. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research? A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Supportive. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A learning log(日志) is an educational tool designed to improve children’s learning experience. ____16____ It can be applied by homeschoolers and other students accepting non-traditional education as well.
