Environmental Protection
Our planet is giving us life, but now it needs our help. Environmental problems are becoming more serious every day. When we look around, we can see many issues that need our attention.
Air pollution is one of the biggest problems. Factories release dark smoke into the sky, and cars produce harmful gases. This dirty air can make people sick, especially children and the elderly. In some cities, people have to wear masks when they go outside. Water pollution is equally bad. Many factories pour waste directly into rivers and lakes, killing fish and making the water unsafe to drink. Have you ever seen a river full of plastic bottles and garbage? It’s heartbreaking to watch.
Another serious issue is deforestation. People are cutting down trees to build houses and factories. This destroys the homes of many animals like birds, squirrels, and monkeys. Without trees, the soil becomes loose and can lead to landslides (山体滑坡) during heavy rain. Moreover, trees help clean the air we breathe, so losing them makes air pollution even worse.
But don’t worry — there are many things we can do to help. First, we should practice the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Instead of throwing everything away, we can use things longer and separate our trash. For example, we can bring our own bags when shopping instead of using plastic bags. Second, saving energy is crucial. Remember to turn off lights when leaving a room and unplug electronic devices when not in use. Even taking shorter showers can save both water and the energy needed to heat it.
Furthermore, we can participate in tree-planting activities in our community. If every student plants just one tree, together we can create a small forest! We can also join clean-up events at nearby parks or beaches. These activities not only help the environment but also bring people together.
Most importantly, we need to learn about environmental protection and share this knowledge with others. Talk to your family and friends about why protecting our planet matters. Small actions, when done by many people, can create huge changes.
4. What are the main types of pollution mentioned in the passage?
A. Air and soil pollution. B. Water and noise pollution.
C. Air and water pollution. D. Light and soil pollution.
5. According to the passage, what are two benefits of planting trees?
A. Reducing noise and providing food.
B. Cleaning the air and preventing landslides.
C. Saving water and creating shade.
D. Producing carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and making cities beautiful.
6. The word “deforestation” in the third passage means:
A. Cutting down trees in large areas. B. Protecting trees from being cut.
C. Planting more forests. D. Studying different types of forests.
7. What does the author suggest we can do with plastic bags?
A. Burn them. B. Bury them in soil.
C. Throw them in rivers. D. Reuse them.

A quote says, “Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart”. That’s exactly how I felt when I saw the magical friendship between a 6-year-old boy, Otto, and a wild crow (乌鸦) named Russell.
Though Russell is a wild bird, he visits Otto and his family often. When the child is at home, he sits quietly by the window, waiting to be let in and watch TV with his human friend. When Otto is at school, the crow sits on the roof, waiting for his friend to return.
In August last year, the family found the thin crow without his parents. They took him in and named him Russell. And so, Russell has been around ever since, getting treats and bringing little things in return. But as much as he enjoys being with the family, Russell seems to only have eyes for Otto. Otto’s mother Luna has seen him following the child around on walks and tricycle (三轮车) rides. The boy smiles whenever he turns around to see his friend. The friendly crow also seems to enjoy watching Otto play with his toy trucks. The child’s mother also shares that Russell only accepts petting (抚摸) from Otto, as he gets away from anyone else that tries to touch him. As for the family’s pets, Luna describes their relationship as “love- hate”, as the crow loves to tease (逗) their cats and dogs.
“Living with Russell means there’s never a boring moment in our life,” Luna says. “He allows us to interact (互动) with nature in a way that most people are not able to.”
8. When Otto is at school, Russell sits _________.
A. by the window B. on the table C. on the roof D. in the tree
9. When did the family first find Russell?
A. Last August B. Last October C. This August D. This October
10. Which word can best describe the relationship between the boy and the crow?
A Impolite B. Magical C. Patient D. Boring
11. The passage is most probably _________.
A. a notice B. a diary C. a story D. a report
D
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been in the news a lot lately. And according to a recent report from the McKinsey Global Institute, roughly half of today’s work activities could be automated (自动的) by 2055. Could “teaching” be on that list?
Computers are capable of levels of calculations we could only dream of achieving with our minds alone. But when a human teacher can connect to a student by having “been there”, through heartfelt listening, they can inspire their students to learn, create, and excel. Even AI with advanced technology can’t do this.
So, chances are good that your job is safe for the near future. But it is going to change, and AI is going to be a part of education. Hopefully, robots will be joining us quite soon... as teaching assistants.
Recently, a Georgia Tech professor built an AI teaching assistant for his classroom, which allowed him to more effectively manage over 400 students all over the world. His AI tends to answer more routine questions, freeing him to do other important tasks.
A variety of robots are also being used in South Korea and Japan as a resource to supplement (补充) language learning. Students can go through any variety of conversational practices, and the AI can monitor mistakes in usage and pronunciation. In fact, research shows that these programs can help resolve (解决) issues like shyness, confidence, and frustration that can arise when practicing repetitively with a teacher: A robot will not get tired, no matter how many mistakes a child makes.
Surprisingly, the West is much more hesitant (犹豫不决) about embracing the integration (融合,整合) of robots and AI in our classrooms, but the tides are quickly turning. Should you start packing up your desk? Absolutely not. The bottom line is that these technologies work best when paired with an active human teacher. But it certainly could make your job easier and more efficient. In the future, Robots will be teachers’ good friends.
12. The author’s attitude towards human teachers’ future can be described as
A. worried B. optimistic C. doubtful D. confused
13. What does the author want to show by giving the example of Georgia Tech professor?
A. AI will control future teaching. B. AI will make no big difference.
C. AI will do more difficult jobs. D. AI will greatly help teachers.
14. In what way does a robot do better than a human teacher?
A. Being patient. B. Being creative.
C. The ability to inspire. D. The ability to communicate.
15. What is the author’s final conclusion about future teaching?
A. Robots will play a leading role. B. Teachers will be replaced by robots.
C. Robots will be teachers’ good friends. D. Teachers will teach without leaving home.

We decided to grow beans in small pots. Lucy drew pictures of the plants every day. I wrote notes about their growth. Tom always came late to meetings. One day, I saw him secretly adding water to the pots after school. I realized he cared about the project but was too shy to say it.
The next week, our beans stopped growing. Lucy and I did not know why. Tom quietly looked at the plants and said, “They need more sunlight.” He moved the pots to a brighter place. Soon, the beans grew green leaves. We were so happy! Tom started to talk more and share his ideas.

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

Last month, our science teacher, Mr. Lee, asked us to do a group project about plants. He put me in a group with Tom and Lucy. Tom was quiet and liked to be alone. Lucy was good at drawing. At first, Tom did not talk much. Lucy and I felt worried.
On the presentation (展示;演示) day, our group showed the beans and Lucy’s beautiful drawings. Mr. Lee praised our teamwork. Tom smiled for the first time. I learned that everyone has something to offer, and patience can help us discover it.

【答案】
Paragraph 1: After the project, Tom became noticeably more confident in class. He often raised his hand to answer Mr. Lee’s questions and even shared his unique observations about plants. Once, he explained why some flowers bloom at night, which surprised his classmates who had never heard such interesting knowledge. He also started to discuss group work with Lucy and me actively, and we all enjoyed the time we spent communicating with him. His change made our friendship stronger.
Paragraph 2: In the next semester (学期), our school held a science fair that attracted numerous participants. Tom, Lucy and I decided to join with a project about how to grow vegetables in small spaces. Tom designed the growing plan, Lucy drew lovely posters, and I wrote the introduction. When we presented our work, many visitors praised the ideas that Tom had put forward. We won the second prize, and Tom’s smile was brighter than ever. We realized that teamwork can not only bring success but also help everyone find their own value.
