考点三:can与could的用法总结
情态动词 can 有一定的词义,但不能单独使用,它必须与动词原形一起构成谓语。情态动词 can 没有人称和数的变化,后接动词原形,可以在一般现在时中使用。could 是 can 的过去式,可以在一般过去时中使用。其具体用法如下:

意为 “能,会”
表示现在的能力
例:(1) He can move the big stone. 他能搬动这块大石头。

(3) —Yes, he can. 是的,他会。
表示过去的能力
例:(1) She could dance when she was four years old. 当她 4 岁时,她会跳舞。(2) I could write a composition ten years ago. 我 10 年前可以写一篇作文。
意为 “可能,可能会”
表推测通常只用于否定句或疑问句中,一般不用于肯定句
例:(1) That can’t be Mary. She is in hospital. 那不可能是玛丽。她住院了。(2) Can he receive my email? 他能收到我的电子邮件吗?
表推测可用于任何句型
例:(1) He could be at home now. 他现在可能在家。
(2) You couldn’t have left it on the bus. 你不可能把它落在公交车上。
意为 “可以”
表示现在的允许或请求
例:(1) Can you help me? 你能帮助我吗?
(2) You can eat a watermelon. 你可以吃一个西瓜。
表示委婉请求
例:(1) Could I have a piece of cake, please? 请问我能吃一块蛋糕吗?
(2) Could you show me the way? 你可以给我指路吗?(现在的请求)
注意:
表示请求时,若是请求别人允许自己做某事,can 和 could 均可用,但 could 语气更委婉;若是自己允许别人做事,一般只用 can,而不用 could。
