Mum always placed a lot of emphasis on higher education and I was educated from a young age to enter university. Unfortunately for Mum, the thing that I had a special love for was cooking — not what she would have chosen for me. Knowing how hard restaurant work is, she wasn’t pleased with my idea. To keep my options open, I decided to apply for university but also cook throughout my studies with a part-time job. However, it wasn’t long before I found I was stuck in studying something not appealing to me, and this part-time work became my thing. I made the tough decision to quit my university major after graduation, switching to pursue a career in the kitchen. Although she wasn’t favorable with my choice, Mum has since been an incredible supporter. Soon, I fell back into old patterns working in kitchens but feeling unfulfilled. Then, social media changed everything. As an early user, I poured my creativity into the platform, discovering a talent for photography and storytelling. Soon, my audience grew to 200,000 followers. Recognizing the opportunity, I quit my job to pursue travel photography and social media full-time. I traveled 50 trips a year at my peak while expanding into consulting, public speaking, and project management. I created social media content, photography and campaign reports. As a pioneer in Australia’s influencer market, my services became highly sought-after. I established a travel account, teaching others to build careers in the industry, and launched an online photography course for beginners. Next year, I’ll lead my first photography tour in Zimbabwe, my partner’s homeland, combining my passions with conservation and community support. My journey has been challenging yet deeply fulfilling. Making money is no longer the main driver — instead, I seek meaningful experiences and opportunities to inspire others. What began as a small idea has grown into a life of adventure, creativity and purpose. 4. Why did the author quit his university major after graduation? A. He was often discouraged by his mother. B. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis; according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century. Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害) , with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent. “Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. “It seems particularly cruel,” she says, “that most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people.” Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise, she says. “Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise.” Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration. In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “not only important for them, but for all humanity”, said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages. 8. What is the writer mainly concerned about? A. The disappearance of languages. B. The challenge of climate change. C. The reaction to the language crisis. D. The trend of the speedy globalization. 9. Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To explain the main reason for language density. B. To show the common features of endangered languages. C. To stress the impact of geographical position on migration. D. To illustrate the situation of minority language communities. 10. What does the International Decade of Indigenous Languages aim to do? A. Support migrants to access local education. B. Discourage people from massive migration. C. Improve the living conditions of minority groups. D. Preserve the languages of indigenous communities. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to Leave B. Lost for Words: Rising Seas Bring Threat of Catastrophe C. Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International Cooperation D. Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis 【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. 根据第一段“This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis; according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.(气候危机加剧了这种“灾难性”损失;根据语言学家的说法。保守估计,如果不采取任何措施,到本世纪末,目前使用的7000种语言中有一半将灭绝)”以及第二段“Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害) , with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct.(说少数民族语言的人经历了漫长的迫害历史,结果到20世纪20年代,澳大利亚、美国、南非和阿根廷的土著语言中有一半已经灭绝)”可知,作者主要关心的是语言的消失。故选A。 根据第三段“Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise, she says. “Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise.” Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.(瓦努阿图是一个南太平洋岛国,面积12189平方公里,拥有110种语言,是地球上语言密度最高的国家。她说,它也是海平面上升风险最大的国家之一。“许多小语言社区位于岛屿和海岸线上,容易受到飓风和海平面上升的影响。”另一些人生活在气温上升威胁到传统农业和渔业的土地上,导致迁徙)”可推知,第3段提到瓦努阿图是为了说明少数民族语言社区的情况。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “not only important for them, but for all humanity”, said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.(联合国大会主席Csaba Korosi表示,促进和保护土著社区的语言“不仅对他们很重要,对全人类也很重要”。他敦促各国允许用土著语言进行教育)”可知,土著语言国际十年的目标是保护土著社区的语言。故选D。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis; according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.(每40天就有一种语言消亡。气候危机加剧了这种“灾难性”损失;根据语言学家的说法。保守估计,如果不采取任何措施,到本世纪末,目前使用的7000种语言中有一半将灭绝)”结合文章主要说明了气候危机加剧了语言的消失,解释了语言消失背后的种种原因以及联合国对土著语言的保护措施。可知,B选项“语言的丧失:海平面上升带来灾难的威胁”最符合文章标题。故选B。 D Scientists have invented a new way to make electricity. Their method uses supertiny holes to make electricity from moisture (水分) in the air. Water droplets in the air carry an electric charge. In clouds, these water droplets build up large charges, which we later see as lightning. One of the researchers, Yao Jun, described the new invention as a “small-scale, man-made cloud”. Since the new device generates electricity from the air, scientists call it “Air-gen”. The new device is very small and very simple. In it, water molecules from the air move through tiny holes from the upper part of a material down into the lower part of the material. The holes are the key. The material has lots of extremely tiny holes called “nanopores (纳米孔)”. As the water molecules work their way through the nanopores, they disrupt the electrical balance between the upper and lower parts of the material, leaving the upper part with a greater charge. This “imbalance” between the two parts is what creates electricity. Currently, the device only makes a small amount of electricity. But in lab tests, the Air-gen produced electricity all day and all night for a week, powered by nothing but the air. Scientists have tried to make electricity from humidity before, but those methods didn’t work for long or were too expensive to make. In 2020, Dr. Yao and his team found a way of getting electricity from humidity using special “nanowires” made from bacteria. In time, that research led the scientists to the key invention of the Air-gen. The researchers are hopeful the Air-gen will become an important green energy source. Many scientists are impressed with the ideas behind the Air-gen. But some scientists have suggested that it might be tough for the Air-gen to create enough electricity to really make a difference, especially compared with solar energy. But Dr. Yao and his team are to work on ways to make Air-gen technology more powerful. Dr. Yao says, “What I imagine is that sometime in the future, we can get clean electricity wherever we go.” 12. Why does the author mention droplets in the first paragraph? A. To explain how they form lightning. B. To stress that they carry electric charges. C. To show they are a natural phenomenon. D. To bring in the topic for discussion. 13. What does the underlined word “disrupt” in the second paragraph mean? A. Improve. B. Disturb. C. Adjust. D. Establish. 14. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph? A. Air-gen sets the pace in electricity generation. B. Air-gen is more efficient than solar power. C. Air-gen is based on previous research. D. No electricity was made from moisture before. 15. What will Dr. Yao’s team continue to do next? A. To expand the use of Air-gen. B. To make Air-gen more productive. C. To switch to the study of solar energy. D. To cooperate with other research teams. D 13. B 14. C 15. 根据第一段中“Water droplets in the air carry an electric charge. In clouds, these water droplets build up large charges, which we later see as lightning. One of the researchers, Yao Jun, described the new invention as a “small-scale, man-made cloud”. (空气中的水滴带有电荷。在云中,这些水滴聚集了大量电荷,这就是我们后来看到的闪电。其中一名研究人员姚军将这项新发明描述为“小规模的人造云”)”可知,作者先提到空气中的水滴携带电荷,然后提到一项运用该原理发电的新发明。由此可知,作者提到“水滴”是为了引出下文要探讨的内容——一种从空气所含水分中产生电能的设备Air-gen以及与之相关的情况。故选D项。 13题详解】 词义猜测题。根据画线词的下文“the electrical balance between the upper and lower parts of the material, leaving the upper part with a greater charge. This “imbalance” between the two parts is what creates electricity. (……材料的上部和下部之间的电平衡,使上部带有更大的电荷。这两部分之间的“不平衡”就是产生电的原因)”可知,水分子使材料上下部分产生电荷差异,从而产生电。由此可推知,水分子扰乱了原先的电平衡,画线单词的含义是“扰乱”,和disturb意思相近。故选B项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“In 2020, Dr. Yao and his team found a way of getting electricity from humidity using special “nanowires” made from bacteria. In time, that research led the scientists to the key invention of the Air-gen. (2020年,姚博士和他的团队发现了一种利用细菌制成的特殊“纳米线”从湿度中获取电能的方法。随着时间的推移,这项研究引导科学家们发明了Air-gen)”可知,该团队2020年的研究引导了后来Air-gen的发明。由此可知,Air-gen的发明基于先前的研究。故选C项。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“But some scientists have suggested that it might be tough for the Air-gen to create enough electricity to really make a difference, especially compared with solar energy. But Dr. Yao and his team are to work on ways to make Air-gen technology more powerful. How to Deal with Impossible People Most people know someone who seems to make every situation a negative and unmanageable one. ___16___, as they likely don’t see a problem with their behavior. Here are tips to help you navigate interactions with these people. Avoid getting defensive. Stay calm, and be aware that you will never win in an argument with impossible people — they are referred to as “impossible”for a reason. In their mind, you are the problem. ___17___. They’ve already decided that your opinion doesn’t matter and your defence is a decorative evidence. Adjust your strategy. ___18___, so treat it like a game. Learn the impossible person’s strategy, and develop counter strategies ahead of time. Eventually you’ll find what works and what doesn’t, plus you’ll probably feel better as you realize you’ re three steps ahead, outwitting (智胜) them at every turn. Just remember your ultimate goal is to help free yourself mentally, not become the person’s master. ___19___. Impossible people offer valuable life experiences. After dealing with them, you will be able to get along with most other people more easily. Try to keep perspective, and realize that what may seem crazy to you may be another person’s only way of coping. Try to view these interactions as a way to build strengths such as flexibility, grace, and tolerance. Watch out for picking up impossible people’s characteristics. You tend to pick up on the behavior of those around you. For this reason, you could find yourself adopting the very characteristics that you dislike by accident. You may engage in the same illogical behavior in response to the impossible person. ___20___. A Accept the situation B. Consider what you can learn C. Catch yourself when you start to do this D. Sometimes you can’t leave the situation E. So nothing you say can convince them to see your side of the story F. Pointing out that these people are difficult and demanding won’t help G. An impossible person is convinced that they have already made a mistake 【答案】16. F 17. E 18. D 19. B 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Most people know someone who seems to make every situation a negative and unmanageable one.(大多数人都认识一些似乎会把每种情况都变得消极且难以处理的人。)”以及下文 “as they likely don’t see a problem with their behavior.(因为他们可能看不到自己行为存在的问题。)” 【17题详解】 根据上文“Stay calm, and be aware that you will never win in an argument with impossible people — they are referred to as “impossible” for a reason. In their mind, you are the problem.(保持冷静,并意识到在与难相处的人的争论中你永远不会赢—— 他们被称为“难相处的人”是有原因的。在他们心里,你才是问题所在。)”可知,此处讲述与难相处的人争论时的情况,由此可推断,此空应阐述与难相处的人争论时的情况,E选项“So nothing you say can convince them to see your side of the story(所以你说的任何话都无法说服他们站在你的立场看问题)”承接上文,进一步说明了与他们争论时的结果,符合语境。故选E项。 【18题详解】 根据上文“Adjust your strategy.(调整你的策略。)”以及下文“so treat it like a game.(所以把它当作一场游戏。)” 【19题详解】 根据下文“Impossible people offer valuable life experiences. After dealing with them, you will be able to get along with most other people more easily. Try to keep perspective, and realize that what may seem crazy to you may be another person’s only way of coping. Try to view these interactions as a way to build strengths such as flexibility, grace, and tolerance.(难相处的人提供了宝贵的人生经验。在与他们打交道后,你将能够更轻松地与大多数其他人相处。试着保持客观,并且意识到对你来说可能看似疯狂的事情可能是另一个人唯一的应对方式。试着把这些互动看作是培养诸如灵活性、优雅和宽容等优点的一种方式。)”可知,此处讲述从与难相处的人的相处中可以学习到东西,B选项“Consider what you can learn(考虑你能学到什么)”为祈使句,且概括了本段的主题,起到了总领下文的作用,符合语境。故选B项。 【20题详解】 根据上文“For this reason, you could find yourself adopting the very characteristics that you dislike by accident. You may engage in the same illogical behavior in response to the impossible person.(出于这个原因,你可能会发现自己意外地采用了你不喜欢的那些特性。你可能会以同样不合逻辑的行为来回应那个难相处的人。)”可知,此处讲述要注意避免沾染难相处的人的不良特性,C选项“Catch yourself when you start to do this(当你开始这样做的时候要及时察觉自己)”中的do this指的是上文的“adopting the very characteristics that you dislike by accident.”,起到了总结上文的作用。故选C项。 第二部分 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) Sweat slipped down my cheek when I reached the turnaround point of today’s kayaking (皮划艇) trip. There was no other way to describe her. Just the other day I heard her telling the headmaster that children took too much time in arts. She even said that most of us didn’t understand what we were doing. I left the office feeling very angry. My anger didn’t last, however. It was December and Christmas was approaching. Excitement filled me right up to the top of my head. I smiled and laughed, singing “Jingle Bells” as we rode home from school. After dinner, Mom and Dad called me into the family room. I knew what we were going to discuss. Every year for as long as I could remember, we had chosen a family who needed some extra help at Christmastime, and we had taken gifts and food to their house. It was one of our family’s favorite traditions. Dad said, “It’s time we decide which family to help this year. Do you have a suggestion?” Some years it had been really easy to decide, but this year I couldn’t think of anyone. Dad looked at Mom. “Maybe Mom has a suggestion. Sometimes she notices things the rest of us miss.” Mom smiled. “I do know of someone who needs our help. I think we should help Mrs. Susan.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! “But, Mom,” I protested, “she seems to have plenty of money and she dresses in nice clothes. Besides, she’s really bad-tempered. She doesn’t even like kids. She might even kick our gifts off her porch (门廊). I think we should choose someone else.” “I know Mrs. Susan has enough money,” Mom said. “I know she isn’t very pleasant to be around. But she was divorced before she moved here. She has three children who have their own children and never come to see her. She is very lonely and unhappy. You see, she never celebrates Christmas. April, you weren’t quite right when you said she wasn’t poor.” “You mean she’s poor in love?” I asked. “Yes. Sometimes it’s much more painful to be poor in love than it is to be poor in money?” I was quiet for minutes. Then Dad said, “Let’s take a vote.” Dad’ and Mom’s hands went up. Looking at them, I unwillingly raised mine. Mom said besides buying her a gift, we should make something by hand. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With the box in hand, I could feel my heart pounding when ringing Susan’s doorbell. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Mom said besides buying her a gift, we should make something by hand. Reminded by my mother, I spent a long time making a gift and writing some Christmas wishes. I wrapped the gift carefully and put it in a beautiful box. On the top of the box I tied a bright red bow. Time flowed. When I finished all the preparations, my heart was full of excitement. On Christmas Day, my family and I went to Susan's door. With the box in hand, I could feel my heart pounding when ringing Susan’s doorbell. Ms. Susan was so surprised that her jaw dropped when she saw us. I said with great joy, “Merry Christmas! Here’s a present for you, Ms. Susan!” With great gratitude, Ms. Susan invited us in and opened my gift box. It’s a picture I made myself, which was about Ms. Susan reuniting with her family. She was so excited that she burst into tears and suddenly hugged me in her arms, sobbing, “This is the most meaningful gift I have ever received, and the most unforgettable Christmas I have ever had!” 系:tie/attach ②.拥抱:hug sb./gather sb. in the arms 情绪类 ①.激动:excitement/thrill ②.哭泣:sob/with tears rolling down 【点睛】[高分句型1]. Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis D Scientists have invented a new way to make electricity. ___20___. A. Accept the situation B. Consider what you can learn C. Catch yourself when you start to do this D Sometimes you can’t leave the situation E. So nothing you say can convince them to see your side of the story F. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
