When I first picked up a fountain pen, I couldn’t understand why anyone would bother with such an outdated instrument. My grandfather’s eyes lit up like a child discovering a hidden treasure. To him, the act of writing wasn’t just about putting words on paper — it was a sacred practice. Writing was about carefully crafting thoughts and communicating them with precision(精准) and care. As a teenager in the digital age, I found the leaking ink and the scratchy nib(笔尖) more of an annoyance than anything else.
But my view began to change when I cleaned out his roof space last summer. While sorting through boxes, I came across a wooden box filled with letters — not just letters he had received, but drafts of his own. One letter, written to the local mayor about the closure of a neighborhood park, wasn’t just a list of complaints. Instead, he had captured the scene of elderly men playing chess in the shade, the distant sound of children laughing, and the general peaceful atmosphere of the area. The writing was both elegant and firm, urging the mayor to consider the value of community spaces.
It was then that I understood. My grandfather didn’t write simply to communicate information. His letters were a labor of love and respect, intended to give the reader the time and attention they deserved. He wasn’t writing for quick exchange, as I often did with my text messages, but for lasting impact.
I began using that old fountain pen again. At first, my hand seized up, and I found it frustrating to write at the pace my thoughts raced. But gradually, the slow ink flow forced me to slow down and think deeply about every word. Writing became more than just a task — it became a way of truly reflecting on my thoughts, my emotions, and my words.
4. How did the author initially find using a fountain pen?
A. Troublesome and messy. B. Exciting and creative.
C. Fascinating but pointless. D. Confusing but acceptable.
5. Why did the author change his attitude toward the fountain pen?
A. He found valuable birthday gifts. B. He discovered his grandfather’s letters.
C. He realized the artistic beauty of writing. D. He experienced playing chess with elders.
6. What’s the significance of “slow ink flow” to the author in the last paragraph?
A. A screen for reflection. B. A cure for loneliness.
C. A source of inspiration. D. A symbol of tradition.
7. What’s the most suitable title for this article?
A. The Art of Handwriting. B. The Letters of My Grandpa.
C. The Wisdom of a Fountain Pen. D. The Slow Pace of Modern Life.

Pinglu Canal: A New Lifeline for Southwest China
For many years, the areas in southwest China far from the sea have faced a difficult transportation problem. Although they are rich in resources, goods had to travel a very long way to reach global markets. However, this changed on September 16, 2026, when the Pinglu Canal officially opened. It creates a direct river-to-sea passage, connecting southwest China with the Beibu Gulf and turning the region from an “inland” area into a “coastal” one.
Located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the 134.2-kilometer waterway is a major national project. It costs 72.7 billion yuan to build and is designed for 5,000-tonne ships. By connecting the Xijiang River shipping network with the coastal Qinzhou Port, the canal makes the traditional shipping route shorter by over 560 kilometers. This is expected to save about 5.2 billion yuan in costs every year, which is great news for the trade of minerals, coal, and building materials.
Different from projects that only focus on making money, the Pinglu Canal pays close attention to protecting nature. To safeguard coastal life, workers moved over 9,570 mature mangrove (红树林) trees and planted 275,000 new ones, most of which survived well. They also built special passages for fish and a 240-meter overpass for wildlife. These measures help restore the migration (迁徙) routes for animals. Moreover, over 98% of the construction waste was recycled to improve the land.
Beyond environmental benefits, the canal is changing regional trade. As a key part of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, it increases trade between China and ASEAN countries. It helps Chinese industrial products reach Southeast Asian markets faster and makes it easier to bring agricultural and mineral resources into southwest China. Experts predict the canal will handle around 150 million tonnes of cargo (货物) per year in the future.
Like the famous Panama and Suez Canals, the Pinglu Canal is changing shipping patterns, but it offers special regional value. It serves river-sea transport within a single region rather than connecting separate oceans. Its full economic potential will depend on further teamwork with existing ports, railways, and logistics (物流) networks.
8. What can we learn about the Pinglu Canal from Paragraph 2?
A. It was built mainly to improve the local environment.
B. It shortens the shipping distance by over 560 kilometers.
C. Its total investment was mostly used to buy large ships.
D. It directly connects local mines with Southeast Asian markets.
9. What does the underlined word “safeguard” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Assess. B. Show. C. Record. D. Protect.
10. Why does the author mention the Panama and Suez Canals?
A. To show the Pinglu Canal’s special regional value by comparison.
B. To prove they have greater economic value than the Pinglu Canal.
C. To explain how international canals change global geography.
D. To argue that regional canals will replace ocean-going ones.
11. Which statement would the author most probably agree with?
A. Profit-driven water projects should be completely forbidden.
B. The Pinglu Canal has already given full play to its economic potential.
C. Ecological protection is important while carrying out the canal project.
D. The amount of goods carried by the canal has reached 150 million tonnes already.

Trees that talk back might sound like something fresh out of a dreamlike trip, but a high-tech initiative aimed at bridging the divide between youth culture and nature has turned fantasy into reality. Specifically, London-based agency Droga5 came up with the campaign for the creative activity, Agency for Nature, giving voice to trees in London, Dublin and Austin, Texas.
To achieve this “talking” function, bioelectrical signals from each tree were transformed into speech through an AI large language model. It was fed insights about the trees’ lifespans and histories, alongside data from biosensors that record metrics (指标) such as wind speed, temperature and soil moisture (湿度). Additionally, the AI acted as the “brain” of the trees, shaping their unique personalities and enabling real-time conversations with more than 100 people — with sometimes touching results. For example, “Your care warms me,” a 50-year-old oak (橡树) told Austin mayor Steve Adler, who asked how he might improve its life. “More stable temperatures and consistent moisture would help. Thank you for asking,” the tree replied.
When discussing the purpose of the campaign, Evan Greally from Droga5 explained, “My hope was to make people care again, to bring out some care for something bigger than ourselves.”
Looking to the future, plans are in progress, but under wraps for now, to give voice to more trees. In the meantime, the team said the AI application could one day be used by farmers to chat with their crops, or to predict wildfires by talking to forests. Commenting on the tool’s potential, Greally’s colleague Chip McCoy added, “There’s an element of endless possibility to it. We have this tool, and it’s in the hands of everybody how we use it for the better.”
12. How does the AI system give trees “voices”?
A. By planting devices in tree trunks. B. By reproducing tree sounds from forests.
C. By translating biological data into speech. D. By recording human conversations nearby.
13. What message does the campaign convey about nature?
A. Nature should be understood with feeling. B. Trees will control future city development.
C. Technology can completely explain nature. D. City expansion damages tree development.
14. What future application is mentioned for the AI tool?
A. Producing tree recorders. B. Predicting natural disasters.
C. Designing urban green spaces. D. Creating tree-based social media.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the talking trees project?
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Enthusiastic.

Being disliked is an unavoidable part of life. And as sociable creatures, we tend to seek acceptance. So finding out someone doesn’t like you can make you feel deeply unsettled. ____16____
Admit and confirm your own feelings.
It’s important to accept your feelings. “Realizing that fearing being disliked is normal — it’s just your natural response to the possibility of being left out — can help you feel less ashamed of it,” says Tina.
____17____
Often, the fear of being disliked comes from our own insecurities, like thinking we’re not good enough. Talking to a therapist can help you understand where these feelings come from and let them go. It also helps to challenge “all-or-nothing” thinking. Ask yourself: What’s the worst that could happen if someone doesn’t like me? Chances are, the fear is much bigger than the reality.
“Remember, others’ opinions are shaped by their own experiences and problems. It’s not always about you,” adds Tina.
Build your network.
“It also helps to take good care of yourself and find people who truly understand, accept, and love you,” says Ali. ____18____
Put yourself in others’ shoes.
Have you ever disliked someone just for small, unimportant reasons? If you have, you’ll find such dislike has nothing to do with their real value. ____19____
Focus on your own values.
Stick to your own values instead of others’ approval. When you stand by what you believe is right, you may be disliked by some people, but this just means you are being true to yourself.
Ultimately, overcoming the fear of being disliked starts with liking yourself. ____20____ With practice, you can embrace the freedom of being your real self.
A. Reshape your thinking.
B. Face your fear calmly.
C. The more people like you, the happier you will be in life.
D. Here are some tips on how to handle the fear of being disliked.
E. When you learn to value who you are, others’ opinions will no longer control your feelings.
F. Instead of worrying about being disliked, focus on building healthy relationships with others.
G. Similarly, if someone dislikes you, it’s often for small reasons — not because of who you are.

Leo was a quiet student at Pinewood High with a deep love for his school. He preferred to keep away from the laughter and games of his classmates; the quiet music room was his favorite place. His excellent violin talent had earned him a scholarship, making him focus more on music and spend little time with lively peers. Most days, he devoted himself in musical notes, finding comfort in the peace of music and rarely interacting with members of other clubs.
When autumn arrived, a new rule for the annual talent show was announced: each performance must be a group work involving at least three students from different clubs, themed “One Stage We Create”. The winning work would be given prize money. His music teacher, Mr. Davies, encouraged him to form a team, filling Leo with a mix of unease and excitement. “You have a gift, Leo,” Mr. Davies said gently, “but a gift is meant to be shared. Find classmates from the art or literature club who can connect with your music.” Leo hoped to win, as he wanted to use the prize money to make his beloved school more beautiful.
Mr. Davies’ words stayed in his mind. Leo was not used to face-to-face invitations, as he seldom spoke to classmates outside of class. School posters with “TOGETHER WE CREATE” were constant reminders of the task ahead. Determined to step out of his music world and work with others to win the prize, he decided to post a notice online to find teammates—a choice that made him feel much more at ease.
That night, he took a deep breath and posted on the school website: “Looking for 2 teammates from different clubs for the talent show. I play the violin and wish to combine music with art or literature. Theme: One Stage We Create”. He hesitated for a moment before clicking “send”.

A 5. B 6. A 7. C

根据第一段“As a teenager in the digital age, I found the leaking ink and the scratchy nib(笔尖) more of an annoyance than anything else.(作为数字时代的一名青少年,我发现漏墨和刮纸的笔尖与其说是其他什么东西,不如说更是一种烦恼。)”
根据第二段“But my view began to change when I cleaned out his roof space last summer. While sorting through boxes, I came across a wooden box filled with letters — not just letters he had received, but drafts of his own.(但去年夏天当我清理他的阁楼时,我的看法开始改变。在整理箱子时,我偶然发现一个装满信件的木盒——不只是他收到的信件,还有他自己写的草稿。)”可知,作者态度的转变是由于发现了祖父的信件。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But gradually, the slow ink flow forced me to slow down and think deeply about every word. Writing became more than just a task — it became a way of truly reflecting on my thoughts, my emotions, and my words.(但渐渐地,缓慢的墨水流速迫使我慢下来,深入思考每一个字。写作不再只是一项任务——它成为了一种真正反思我的思想、情感和我所写文字的方式。)”可知,“缓慢的墨水流速”让作者慢下来,深入思考每一个字,对作者而言是一个反思的契机。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“When I first picked up a fountain pen, I couldn’t understand why anyone would bother with such an outdated instrument.(当我第一次拿起钢笔时,我无法理解为什么有人愿意费心使用这种过时的工具。)”和最后一段“Writing became more than just a task — it became a way of truly reflecting on my thoughts, my emotions, and my words.(写作不再只是一项任务——它成为了一种真正反思我的思想、情感和我所写文字的方式。)”

B 9. D 10. A 11. C

They also built special passages for fish and a 240-meter overpass for wildlife.(工人们移除了9570多棵成熟的红树林,并种植了27.5万棵新树,其中大多数存活良好。
第三段“Different from projects that only focus on making money, the Pinglu Canal pays close attention to protecting nature. To safeguard coastal life, workers moved over 9,570 mature mangrove (红树林) trees and planted 275,000 new ones, most of which survived well. They also built special passages for fish and a 240-meter overpass for wildlife. These measures help restore the migration (迁徙) routes for animals. Moreover, over 98% of the construction waste was recycled to improve the land.(与仅追求经济效益的项目不同,平陆运河高度重视生态保护。为保护沿海生物,工人们移除了9570棵成熟的红树林,并种植了27.5万棵新树,其中大多数存活良好。他们还修建了专为鱼类设置的通道以及一条240米长的野生动物过道。这些措施有助于恢复动物的迁徙路线。此外,超过98%的建筑垃圾被回收利用,以改善土地质量)”专门介绍平陆运河没有只追求经济效益,采取了大量生态保护措施,说明作者认可运河项目建设过程中生态保护的重要性。

C 13. A 14. B 15. D

“Remember, others’ opinions are shaped by their own experiences and problems. It’s not always about you,” adds Tina.
Build your network.
“It also helps to take good care of yourself and find people who truly understand, accept, and love you,” says Ali. ____18____

The next afternoon, right after his violin practice, he checked the website eagerly. His heart raced as he saw two replies. One was from Lila, an art club member who wanted to paint live on stage, inspired by music. The other was from Tom, a literature club student who wrote poems about the school’s hidden corners. Both mentioned wanting to use the prize to add more green spaces to the campus, just like Leo. They met in the music room that evening, and as Leo played a soft melody, Lila sketched a draft of a sunlit school garden while Tom read a poem about growth and connection. For the first time, Leo felt part of something bigger than his violin.
When the big day came, Leo stood confidently on stage with his teammates. As his violin strings began to hum, Lila’s brush danced across a large canvas, painting the school’s courtyard blooming with flowers. Tom’s voice rose, reciting his poem about how every student’s small light makes the school warm. The audience was spellbound; when the last note faded, cheers filled the hall. They won first place, and later, their prize money turned the courtyard into a lush garden with benches and a small poetry wall. Leo smiled as he watched classmates laugh among the flowers, knowing he’d not only beautified his school but also found kindred spirits.
