We had a class meeting about whether we should be allowed to wear our own clothes at school last Monday. We had different ideas on this topic.
Three students gave their opinions. Julia thought we should be allowed to wear our own clothes, because we would feel more comfortable and that would be good for studies. Lisa agreed with Julia. She said our uniforms were thick and ugly, and did not suit us. But Sam disagreed with them. He believed that if we didn’t wear uniforms at school, we would pay more attention to our clothes than our studies. As for me, I thought a good way to deal with the problem. It was to let us design our own uniforms. What do you think?

Learn to Be Independent
Nowadays, many children are treated as “little emperors” at home. Parents show so much love for their children that when they face problems, they don’t know what to do. So it’s important for children to learn to be independent.
In my opinion, parents should believe their children and never do everything for them. It’s necessary to give children proper advice and more chances to make their own decisions.
As for children, they shouldn’t depend on their parents too much. On the one hand, they should learn to do chores. It helps to develop their independence and teaches them how to look after themselves. On the other hand, they ought to face difficulties bravely and try to solve them.
In a word, the earlier children learn to be independent, the better it is for their future.

Zhang Junli, now in her 40s, comes from a village in Taiyuan. When she was a child, Zhang Junli got a serious illness which caused her to be paralyzed (瘫痪的). “I could not move my body, and I have to stay in bed. The illness brought me pain and staying in bed made me feel lonely,” Zhang said. To help and encourage her, Zhang’s parents gave her some books and often told her inspirational (鼓舞人心的) stories.
Gradually, she found her way in life, and it all started with an idea she had when she was 12. When she first said that she wanted to learn painting, her mother was surprised but got her daughter all the things she needed at once. Zhang’s deformed (变形的) fingers made it difficult for her to draw. She failed many times, but finally she succeeded in finishing her first drawing.
In 2015, one of her pen friends advised her to take up oil painting. By watching online videos, reading books, and copying works of great artists, Zhang was able to teach herself how to paint with oils.
In 2017, she opened an online shop to sell her paintings following a suggestion from her younger brother. “I thought it was a good idea, as there was no place to store them at home,” she said. “More importantly, I thought I could make money and help my parents who still have to work to support me.”
Besides drawing, Zhang also learned to type and she spent seven years writing a 260,000-word novel called The Blazing Girl. She also wrote an autobiography (自传) called My Existence between 2012 and 2014.

What is the sky? How high is it? What color is it? These questions are difficult to answer, aren’t they? In fact, the sky has no color. Then why does the sky look blue?
We know that there is air around the world. When planes fly, they need air to lift their wings (机翼). Planes can’t fly very high. That is because the air gets thinner when they go higher. The same will happen to us if we go high enough. If we go up about 1,200 kilometers from the earth, we’ll find no air there.
Looking up above us, you will see the blue sky with white clouds. The color would be bluer when you see it on the top of a high mountain. And you will see fewer clouds in the sky between you and the sun. Sometimes the sky doesn’t look blue. When the sun rises and falls, you will see red, orange, and other colors in the sky.
Who can see the colors of the sky high above the earth? The astronauts! They can see those beautiful colors of the sky from the outer space. However, before flying into the outer space, they sit in a spaceship high above the earth, and there is no air at all. The sky would be dark and its color would be black.
Now you may understand that we see colors because the air scatters the sunlight. Light travels through the air. Without air, there would be no colors.
( ) 46. Why does the writer talk about planes’ flying in Paragraph 2?
A. To show that there’s air around the world.
B. To explain how the planes can fly in the sky.
C. To tell us the air’s importance in lifting the planes.
D. To introduce the topic that the air becomes thinner when it’s higher.
( ) 47. When you stand on the top of a high mountain, you will see ______.
A. more air B. fewer clouds C. more colors D. redder skies
( ) 48. In Sichuan, we might see many colors in the sky at about ______ during the day in summer.
A. 1:00 a.m. B. 3:00 a.m. C. 7:00 p.m. D. 11:00 p.m.
( ) 49. The underlined word “scatters” probably means “______” in Chinese in this passage.
A. 使停止 B. 使聚集 C. 使削弱 D. 使散射
( ) 50. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Why the sky looks blue. B. Why planes can’t fly very high.
C. Why the sky changes colors. D. Why the astronauts can see the colors of the sky.

Sometimes we fall in love with something at once and sometimes it takes long. 51 If we were lucky enough, we would love a poem on first reading. But it usually takes us some time to truly understand a poem. Today I’d like to share some ways to make the experience better.
52
It will deepen your understanding if you read a poem again and again. A poem that seems boring on first reading may become interesting with more reading.
Keep a dictionary at hand.
53 Instead of trying to guess their meanings, look them up in your dictionary.
Read aloud and listen to the poem.
54 Besides, a poet’s reading is helpful because we can understand the poem’s meanings from where the poet places emphasis (强调) or pauses (停顿).
Think deeply after reading a poem.
After you finish reading, take a few minutes to consider what it’s saying. Sometimes its meanings are better understood through repeated reading. 55
It’s hard to say whether there’s a right or wrong way to read poems, but reading practice will increase your enjoyment, and deepen your understanding of any poem.
A. Read a poem repeatedly.
B. The same is true with poems.
C. Poets like to use unusual words.
D. It’s not easy to fully understand a poem.
E. Other times they need our careful and deep thinking.
F. Reading aloud will make the poem’s rhythm (韵律) clear.

Electric cars have been around for more than a hundred years. But they have really been popular over the last ten years. More than three million all-electric cars are now on the road worldwide.
Helping the Environment
Most cars run on oil. Burning oil and other fossil fuels (化石燃料) produces greenhouse gases. Electric cars don’t burn oil. Instead, strong batteries (电池) run their electric engines. So, electric cars don’t directly produce greenhouse gases.
Poop (粪便) Power
Electric cars are better for the environment, but they are not perfect. Their batteries often use electricity that was made by burning fossil fuels. But an electric car uses less energy than a car that runs on oil. And some may soon come from a new source (来源) — cow poop! An electric car company has worked together with a large farm. They plan to make electricity using greenhouse gases from cow poop.
Always Improving
One of the problems for electric cars is their limited range. This is how far they can travel before their batteries need another charge (充电). But now their range is improving. Some new electric cars can travel almost three times as far as older ones did. Another problem is finding a place to recharge the batteries. But these years, people are building more charging stations around. China now has thousands more charging stations than it did ten years ago.
