My dad doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would bake great bread, but he is and he does. Every Saturday he produces homemade bread. When he’s finished, the whole house smells delicious.
The rest of the week, Dad works as a mechanic (机修工). The car repair shop where Dad works is running so well that he is always busy. He is under a lot of stress. I think Dad began baking bread to help him relax.
I’ve been feeling kind of stressed out myself since I found out I failed to join the school swim team. Now I’ll have to wait a whole year to try out again. Besides, I’m taking some difficult classes this year.
I think Dad knew I was feeling bad. Last Saturday he asked me how things were going. I said OK, even though I didn’t feel OK at all. He looked at me for a moment, and then he said it was time for me to help. Then he headed to the kitchen.
I followed right behind him. Once we were there, Dad got out his big mixing bowl, handed me a large wooden spoon, and told me to mix while he added the ingredients (配料). Dad isn’t big on measuring. He knows how much of each ingredient to use, and the bread always turns out great.
When I had finished, Dad showed me how to knead the dough (揉面团). Next came the most difficult part — doing nothing. We put the dough back into the bowl and then we waited for more than an hour for the dough to slowly rise and double in size. Next, we divided it into two and waited for it to rise again. After that, we put the dough into pans (烤盘) and waited another hour for the dough to rise and double.
Dad said the waiting is always the hardest part. “Listen to me, Diana. It’s hard to resist putting the dough directly into the baking oven, but if you do, the bread will be hard. The most important lesson of all is learning to be patient.” Dad taught me more than how to bake bread.

C
A quarrel (争吵) at home may result in you falling ill. Don’t laugh — it’s true. Family matters including living habits and even the way we speak have a big effect on our health, doctors say. Wang Xiaoyu, Senior 2 girl from Xichang, Sichuan Province fainted (晕倒) in class when she heard her classmates quarrel at the top of their voices. Quarrels between her parents also put her into a coma. It is because she has depression (抑郁), caused by bad relations at home, doctors explained.
“We don’t get sick or stay well by ourselves,” says Dr. Robert Ferrer from the US. Ferrer shows that family relationships may explain about 25% of health problems in his recent research.
The genes (基因) you get from your family may cause illness. If one of your parents has a heart attack, your risk of being affected (影响) may double. But effects on health are not only written in our DNA. Unrelated people who live under the same roof also get similar problems. Food, lifestyle and environment influence our health, too.
Ferrer’s research also found that if teenagers feel they get little attention from their parents, they are more likely to get sick.
We may never fully understand all the effects that families have on our health. But just as a single person’s problems can have effects on others, a small improvement can have big effects, Ferrer said.
8. Why did Wang Xiaoyu faint in class?
A. Because her classmates had hit her.
B. Because she shouted to her classmates aloud.
C. Because her schoolwork was too hard for her.
D. Because a serious quarrel broke out in her class.
9. The underlined word “coma” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. excitement B. faint C. tiredness D. sadness
10. Which of the following might Dr. Ferrer agree with?
A. We get sick or stay well by ourselves.
B. What we eat doesn’t matter much to our health.
C. Teenagers need enough attention from parents to keep healthy.
D. Only the genes we get from parents decide our health condition.
11. What does the author want to tell us in the passage?
A. We can’t avoid getting sick.
B. Happy families keep us healthy.
C. Health is important to everyone.
D. We should get on well with others.
D 9. B 10. C 11. B
由第一段的“Wang Xiaoyu, Senior 2 girl from Xichang, Sichuan Province fainted (晕倒) in class when she heard her classmates quarrel at the top of their voices.(来自四川省西昌市的高二女生王晓雨在课堂上突然晕倒了,当时她听到同学们在大声争吵。)”
由第一段的“Wang Xiaoyu, Senior 2 girl from Xichang, Sichuan Province fainted (晕倒) in class when she heard her classmates quarrel at the top of their voices. Quarrels between her parents also put her into a coma.(来自四川省西昌市的高二女生王晓雨在课堂上听到同学们大声争吵时突然晕倒了。她父母之间的争吵也让她陷入了coma。)”可知,划线词所在的句子的前一句中fainted (晕倒)一词表明,父母的争吵也会让她陷入昏迷,因此coma也是昏迷之意。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。由第四段中的“Ferrer’s research also found that if teenagers feel they get little attention from their parents, they are more likely to get sick.(费雷尔的研究还发现,如果青少年觉得父母对他们关注不够,他们就更有可能生病。)”
通读全文,特别是第二段内容““We don’t get sick or stay well by ourselves,” says Dr. Robert Ferrer from the US. Ferrer shows that family relationships may explain about 25% of health problems in his recent research.(美国的罗伯特·费雷尔医生表示:“我们不会自己患病或保持健康。”费雷尔在其近期的研究中指出,家庭关系能够解释约 25% 的健康问题。)”可知,本文由王晓雨因身患抑郁而在同学或家人争吵之时晕倒的个案导入,介绍了不良的家庭关系(包括父母之间的争吵及对孩子的忽略)对子女健康状况的影响。在最后一段中指出家人的一个小小的改善会产生很大的作用。由此可知,作者想借本文说明的是:幸福的家庭使我们健康。故选B。
D
A new study suggests that cats can even learn to make a connection between the words we use for objects or images (影像),and they pick this up faster than our own babies do.
Previous (以前的) research has shown cats can follow human pointing, and they understand who is on their team, who they can trust, and who decides to give them food. We also know they can recognize their own names.
Cats can even learn the names of cats and people they know. “I was very surprised, because that meant cats were able to listen to people’s conversations without them knowing and understand words without any special training,” says Saho Takagi, a scientist at Azabu University and member of the 2022 study. She wondered: Do cats have a natural ability to learn human language?
To find out, the team gave a word test to 31 adult pet cats, by putting each one in front of a laptop showing two short cartoon animations (动画), while an audio track (音轨) of the cat’s caregiver saying a made-up word was played.
Most cats were used to the pairing after four tests. When the cats were tired of this, they were given a break before the next round, in which the images and audio were played four more times, with a slight change: half the images had the ‘wrong’ audio. The cats showed signs of confusion when they noticed a mismatch, spending 33 percent more time looking at the screen when this happened. “Some cats even looked fixedly at the screen during the changed condition,” Takagi told Science. “Cats pay attention to what we say in everyday life—and try to understand us—more than we realize.”
While these experiments suggest cats might be able to make a connection between human words and images even faster than human babies do, there are a few key differences between the 1990s experiment on babies and this new study. The babies, for example, were only given words spoken by a stranger. The cats, on the other hand, heard words spoken by their own caregivers.
According to the authors, further research into whether these abilities are shared or unique could help us understand communication across different species (物种).
12. What surprised Takagi about cats according to paragraph 3?
A. Their recognition of their own names. B. Their untrained word understanding ability.
C. Their great communication skills. D. Their ability to follow human pointing.
13. Why did the Takagi’s team conduct the word test?
A. To study cats’ preferences. B. To improve cats’ skills.
C. To test cats’ language abilities. D. To show cats’ behavior
14. What did the cats do when they heard mismatched audio?
A. They ignored the mismatch. B. They watched the screen longer.
C. They slept through the test D. They looked around quickly.
15. What could further research help us do?
A. Change the performance of cats B. Improve communication skills.
C. Focus on the caregivers’ words. D. Understand cross-species communication.
B 13. C 14. B 15. D

根据最后一段“According to the authors, further research into whether these abilities are shared or unique could help us understand communication across different species(物种).( 根据作者的说法,进一步研究这些能力是共享的还是独特的,可以帮助我们理解不同物种之间的交流。)”

上文“Pay attention to everything the teacher says. I can’t stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worthwhile to add.(要专心听老师讲的每一句话。我再怎么强调专心听老师讲课的重要性都不为过。如果有有价值的内容可以补充,就积极参与课堂讨论。)”围绕专注老师所讲内容和参与课堂讨论展开,强调课堂专注的重要性。选项 F“Pay attention during class, especially during lectures(课堂上一定要专心,尤其是老师讲课时。)”
根据段首句“Taking notes is important. (记笔记也很关键。)”可知,本段主题是记笔记。上文“You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the blackboard, or any special fact you think you might need for a test. (你不需要把老师说的每一个字都记下来,但要记下老师写在黑板上的内容,以及任何你认为考试可能会用到的重要知识点。)”则提到无需记下老师说的每一个字,只需记录黑板内容和考点,后文“This way it will help you learn more effectively by actually thinking about what you are writing. (这样一来,通过主动思考自己所写的内容,你能更高效地学习。)”则说明这样做能通过思考所写内容更高效学习。选项B“Write in your own words (用自己的话来记录)”是连接记录重点和高效学习的关键,即用自己的话转述笔记,需要主动思考内容逻辑,恰好能实现后文通过思考提升学习效果的目的,符合逻辑。故选B。
前文“You will be missing out on stuff. (逃学只会让你错过很多重要内容。)”指出逃学会错过内容,后文“However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures and in-class movies. (但你会面临更多的学习任务,而且还错过了老师的讲课内容和课堂播放的影片。)”用“However”转折,强调逃学后会有更多作业,且错过讲课和课堂影片。选项 D“It is true that you could make up the work(确实你可以补完作业)”中的“能补作业”与后文“更多作业”形成对比:先承认补作业的可能性,再通过转折突出补作业之外的损失,强化不要逃学的观点,符合转折逻辑的衔接需求。故选D。
下文“then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems or offer you extra credit. The same goes for the lazy attitude.(那么老师可能就不太愿意帮你解决问题,也不会给你额外的加分机会。懒惰的态度也是如此。)”提到老师会不太愿意帮助你,且补充说明懒惰态度。选项G“If you have an "I don’t care about study" attitude (如果你抱着“我不在乎学习”的态度)”是对不良态度的具体举例:不在乎学习属于负面态度,与后文“老师不愿帮忙”构成因果关系,同时与后文“lazy attitude”形成并列,共同说明不良态度的危害,符合逻辑。
根据本段内容“There is no shame in needing some help. If you don’t understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, seek help. Ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent etc. Get a tutor if you need one.(需要帮助并不是什么丢人的事。如果有不明白的地方,就开口问。先阅读课本和笔记,要是还是不懂,就去寻求帮助。可以问老师、朋友、同学、父母等等。如果有需要,也可以找一位辅导老师。)”可知,本段围绕寻求帮助展开。选项C“Always ask questions (总是提问)”是对后文“寻求帮助”的核心概括,符合逻辑。故选C。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Yesterday I was in a bad mood because of losing my job. I tried to find something else to do to make myself feel better. I went shopping for a pair of trainers to replace the old pair I have been wearing for too long. I would have replaced them months ago but I am one of those women who hate shopping. I hate the crowds and the heat in the shops, but mostly I hate the waiting line.
I was happy as I found my trainers very quickly, but my happiness soon disappeared when I found myself in a very long line for the payment.
This line was long and snaking around a corner. I do hate waiting but I find the best way to pass the time is to talk to the person behind me.
So I turned around and told the woman behind me that the line was looking very long and joked that I hoped we could all hang on.
She laughed and agreed. I caught an English accent(口音)as she spoke, so being a person from Liverpool in England myself, I immediately asked her where she was from.
She rewarded me with a sharp look and said, “England. ”
Immediately I realized that I had accidentally offended(冒犯)her—she was black and thought I was referring to her colour. I told her I was from Liverpool and had noticed her English accent.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
She laughed then and continued chatting. The woman said she was a high school teacher in Liverpool. She had a lot of naughty students in the school, and she had been under great pressure in her life recently as well, so she had decided to take these days off to escape from the school for a little while by visiting her friend here. I was able to understand her because we were under the same roof. I poured out all my pain in life, too.
The line seemed to disappear slowly as we exchanged some information about our life. In chatting, time is not as long as I first imagined, and waiting is not so boring. Soon it was our turn to pay the bill and say goodbye. I carried my trainers out of the shop happily. Never did I have a sense of relief like this time. Not because of getting my trainers, but because of the relaxation and freedom to chat with a stranger who I would never meet again. Talking to strangers can help bring us back down to earth. Why not seize the chance to be pleasantly surprised?

D. Dad doesn’t like measuring.
7. What is the best title of the passage?
A. A Valuable Life Lesson. B. Enjoyable Housework.

But just as a single person’s problems can have effects on others a small improvement can have big effects, Ferrer said.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
She laughed then and continued chatting.
