Passage 4
(23-24八年级上·内蒙古通辽·期末)Last summer Mom and I went camping (露营) in Namibia to spend our holiday. It was my first time camping and my first visit to Namibia. My mom knew the country. When she was young, she had been there with a cousin, and she showed great happiness to go back there again.
The campsite (露营地) was beautiful, with a big swimming pool. Campsites usually have showers, but when we got there, we found that this one had a real bath (浴缸)—I couldn’t believe it. Also, we didn’t need to make our own meals because there was a cook making food for us in an outdoor kitchen.
I was always tired in the evenings and I couldn’t wait (等待) to get into my little camp bed. Every night I lay there listening to all the animals. They were really noisy, so sleeping wasn’t effortless. However, hearing them was one of the best things about the holiday.
We also saw a lot of animals. One day we found a lion family and stopped to watch them. Unluckily, they were sleeping by a tree, and I couldn’t get any good photos of them. They didn’t look scary but our guide (向导) didn’t let us get close.

Passage 3
(24-25八年级上·河南·期末)When I was about 12, I had an “enemy (敌人)”, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings (缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn’t a good student; I talked too much and so on. I tried to bear all these as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked, “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I found that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be helpful to you.”
“Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.” Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.
