When my daughter Sara was in the fifth grade, she was caught in a rather difficult social problem. One day, she came to me with tears in her eyes, crying out, “My friend Marcy hates me!” She explained, “Kathy was also my friend, but Marcy wanted to be my only friend.” However, Sara wanted to have other friends as well. Then she said to me, “You should talk to Marcy and tell her that!”
I was quite surprised when hearing my daughter’s problem. After thinking about her situation for a while, an idea suddenly hit me. I quickly got two baskets from the living room. I told her, “At birth, each person is given a small basket. This small one here is yours, and the larger one belongs to me. As you grow up, your basket will grow bigger, too. You can see that your little basket is inside mine. That’s because when you were just born, there were so many things you couldn’t deal with on your own. I had to do everything for you that you couldn’t manage.”
Sara nodded, showing that she understood what I meant.
I continued, “As you grew and started to complete tasks independently, I began to place a few more things in your basket. For example, when you learned to tie your shoes, that skill went into your basket.”
She said softly with a sense of pride, “I can tie my own shoes.”
“Exactly. As you grow older, you’ll have to take on more and more tasks all by yourself.” While saying this, I slowly separated her basket from mine and placed it in her hands. “Finally, you will carry your own basket filled with things that only you can do.”
She looked up at me, her eyes bright with realization. “I understand. There are some things that I have to do for myself because they are in my basket.”
24. What was Sara’s problem in the fifth grade?
A. Her mother was very strict with her.
B. She didn’t know how to tie her shoes.
C. She wanted to do all the things by herself.
D. Her friend didn’t want her to have another friend.
25. How did the writer feel when she heard her daughter’s problem?
A. Angry. B. Sad. C. Surprised. D. Disappointed.
26. What did Sara realize at the end of the story?
A. Following parents’ advice helps solve problems.
B. Doing some things for herself is a part of growth.
C. Communicating properly helps make more friends.
D. Telling the truth is necessary for understanding each other.
C
Welcoming four-legged friends into the classroom is becoming popular across the country. And research shows that therapy-dog (治疗犬) programs provide important benefits (好处) for students. According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, “Therapy dogs have been called ‘miracle workers’ because of their calming influence on students and teachers.”
There is an obvious difference between service dogs and therapy dogs. Service dogs help those with specific disabilities, such as problems with eyesight. Therapy dogs are trained to provide (提供) health and social-emotional benefits.
Tarah Randazzo is a middle school counselor (顾问) at Greenfield Middle School in Wisconsin. She has a yellow labrador, Archie, a therapy dog that she brings with her to school a couple of days each week. She says students love Archie days, and Archie brings so many positive benefits, like growing attendance, better problem-solving, and just overall calmness to middle school life. “I’ve noticed that when students are really worried about grades, just being near Archie makes a big difference,” Randazzo says. Dogs in the classroom provide both physical and emotional health benefits for students.
According to one study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), having a dog present in the classroom improves a positive mood and provides an important anti-stress influence on the body. In fact, the simple act of petting a dog has the influence of lowering blood pressure and heart rate. Pet therapy also lowers stress hormones (荷尔蒙). In other words, just being in contact with a therapy dog calms kids down when they’re upset. And lowering feelings of worry and depression (沮丧) enables them to focus on learning.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of therapy dogs in the classroom is the influence on students’ social-emotional development. Loving and lovable, dogs are good listeners who make no judgements. Children get on well with these gentle animals, helping them feel more connected and confident. This helps reduce bad behavior and anger.
The positive influence of therapy dogs begins in life and goes into schools, helping students become more caring and understanding. Let’s support their presence in schools to create a better educational experience for everyone.
27. Why does the writer mention Archie in Paragraph 3?
A. To explain why therapy dogs can calm kids down.
B. To prove therapy dogs are better than service dogs.
C. To show the benefits therapy dogs bring to students.
D. To discuss if therapy dogs improve students’ learning.
28. According to the passage who would benefit most from therapy dogs?
A. Counselors who train the therapy dogs.
B. Students who feel worried about the grades.
C. Students who have problems with their eyesight.
D. Teachers who want their students to do better in studies.
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Therapy Dogs: Lesson Planners B. Therapy Dogs: Learning Coaches
C. Therapy Dogs: Classroom Friends D. Therapy Dogs: Classroom Managers
D
Children have an unbelievably curious mind. They explore new things for no other reason except that they just desire (渴望) to know. But as kids grow, they often fall into a fixed mindset. George Land, a researcher from NASA, studied 1,600 children, testing their creativity and curiosity levels at ages 5, 10, and 15. The first time these kids took the test, 98% scored the highest possible score. Five years later, only 30% of them scored well. For the third time—by then in high school—only 12% of the kids did well.
This dramatic decrease (下降) in curiosity could be caused by their increase (增长) in knowledge, according to George Land. Once they feel like there’s no gap (缺口) between what they know and what they want to know, they just stop acting curious. Curiosity, it seems, gets unlearned as people age. But why should we care?
Research shows that allowing our curiosity to be piqued can be very good for our minds. For example, when presented with an interesting puzzle that doesn’t have a clear answer, your brain is highly activated, and it gets ready for learning and becomes more creative in finishing related tasks. Lit by curiosity, the mind sharpens its focus and gains a fresh perspective (角度).
In education, curiosity serves as a stepping stone to academic (学术的) success. For one thing, it improves memory. A study in Neuron finds that when students are highly curious about a fact, they are 30% more likely to remember it. Curiosity also builds patience. A study from Duke University shows that curious people are more willing to wait for the solution to a puzzle, while less curious people always rush through tasks, missing chances for deeper learning.
The benefits of curiosity do not end here. Greater curiosity can make people more open to hearing others’ opinions, even if they differ from their own. This openness allows healthy disagreements and helps avoid problems like groupthink, where poor decision-making happens because people don’t consider different views.
Ready to do more to develop your curiosity? The good news is that low levels of curiosity don’t mean your curiosity is just gone. In fact, you can actively train your curiosity. One great way is to ask yourself questions and write them down and find the answers later. This simple step of finding gaps in your knowledge naturally brings more curiosity.
We all start out curious. It’s our choice to be curious or not. As physicist Richard Feynman wisely said, “Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough.” And with the proven benefits, you may be surprised where curiosity leads you. Why not have your curiosity back as you grow up?
30. According to the passage, some people stop being curious because ______.
A. they develop a more open mindset as they age
B. they try to focus on their work rather than the mind
C. their increase in knowledge weakens their desire to know
D. their study interest drops after getting poor scores at school
31. The word “piqued” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “______”.
A. encouraged B. tested C. explained D. received
32. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. Curiosity allows healthy disagreements within a group.
B. Curiosity can be improved by remembering knowledge.
C. Less curious people often suffer more from memory loss.
D. High curiosity pushes people to look for quick solutions.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To prove the possibility of training curiosity.
B. To encourage people to bring their curiosity back.
C. To show how curiosity leads to academic success.
D. To explore different reasons for developing curiosity.

Four Great New Inventions
China’s “Four Great New Inventions” in modern times have made the daily life of the public more and more convenient. They are the high-speed railway (HSR), shopping online, shared bikes and mobile phone payment.
Living in Singapore, I had only read about these technologies through newspapers, TV, and the Internet. But last October, I traveled to China and had the chance to experience all of them for the first time.
As it was Golden Week, I quickly learned that getting a train ticket at the station was nearly impossible because of high demand (高需求). Luckily, I was able to buy a ticket to Beijing online and pay for it through Alipay, which was much more convenient than I expected. It was even cheaper than it was bought in the station. Then we got on the high-speed train. I was shocked at its speed and quietness. There was no noise which the train made while running. It was reported that China has the longest high-speed railway in the world, which is known as a “name card” for China.
China’s HSR has also gone abroad. In 2014, China finished building its first foreign high-speed rail in Turkey. In June 2015, China and Russia agreed to build the 770 km of high-speed railway connecting Moscow and Kazan. In October 2015, China helped Indonesia to build a high-speed rail between Jakarta and Bandung.
Did I feel bored during the trip on the train? Not at all. I bought many cheap and good things in Taobao and Tmall on the Internet through my mobile phone. It’s amazing that there are oceans of products in Taobao and Tmall.
Soon we arrived in Beijing. We got on a bus near the train station. After getting off the bus, my friend told me that the bus stop is a little bit far from his home. I thought we would have to spend much money going to his home on a taxi, but it seemed that he wasn’t worried about that. He showed me some bikes on the side of the street. They are called shared bikes. We used the mobile phones to scan the Quick Response code (扫描二维码) on shared bikes, and then we rode the bikes home. It was so cool!
34. What are China’s “Four Great New Inventions”?

28. According to the passage, who would benefit most from therapy dogs?
A. Counselors who train the therapy dogs.
B. Students who feel worried about the grades.
C. Students who have problems with their eyesight.
D. Teachers who want their students to do better in studies.
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

C. Therapy Dogs: Classroom Friends D. Therapy Dogs: Classroom Managers

For example when presented with an interesting puzzle that doesn’t have a clear answer, your brain is highly activated, and it gets ready for learning and becomes more creative in finishing related tasks.
【答案】30. C 31. A 32. A 33. B

For example, when presented with an interesting puzzle that doesn’t have a clear answer, your brain is highly activated, and it gets ready for learning and becomes more creative in finishing related tasks.”可知,当面对一个没有明确答案的有趣谜题时,大脑会被高度激活,为学习做好准备,在完成相关任务时变得更有创造力,由此可推测出“piqued”意思是“激发,鼓励”,与“encouraged”意思相近。故选A。
【32题详解】

【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据“We all start out curious. It’s our choice to be curious or not.
