B When you get a less desirable gift. people like to say, “It’s the thought that counts.” But with my mother’s gifts, you’ve really got to wonder, “What thought was that exactly?” My mother’s presents are never given to be mean; they are always presented with wide-eyed, innocent excitement. “Do you like it?” she always asks expectantly, and we nod our heads while we try to figure out what “it” is. Over the years, my mother’s Christmas presents have become well-known for the amusement — and sometimes horror — that they could cause. For instance, my mother once gave me a pair of bright red underwear, the kind that you see little girls wearing under their fancy dresses in old-timey pictures. Several years ago, she spent days working on a handmade clay (泥土) sculpture:a lovingly crafted, odd interpretation of my head. I took the clay head home and placed it on my bathroom counter as instructed. I soon discovered that few things terrify my two-year-old child more than a small, strange-looking version of his mother’s head staring at him while he was sitting on the toilet. Someone asked me what I hoped to get for this Christmas from my mother. “Oh nothing,” I explained. You don’t “hope” for gifts from her. They’re coming — whether you want them or not. But the weird, clueless, endless and enthusiastic love that comes with my mother’s gifts is the same love with which she raised me, and it’s hers and hers alone. She has always loved me for my boring personality unconditionally, and I — with all my eyerolls and sighs by the Christmas tree — love her unconditionally as well. There’s no better gift to give a child than the knowledge that they can be weird or awkward and still feel unconditionally loved. 4. Why does the author ask the question in paragraph 1? A. To express concern about the gifts. B. To point out her mother’s lack of taste. C. To suggest her mom’s thoughtlessness. D. To stress the strange nature of the gifts. 5. Which of the following best describes the clay sculpture? A. Lovely. B. Realistic. C. Unimaginative. D. Horrifying. 6. How does the author feel about her mothers gifts according to paragraph 4? A. Hoping they will improve. B. Amused by their strangeness. C. Accepting they’re unavoidable. D. Determined to prevent their arrival. 7. What is the passage mainly about? A. Gift ideas for loved ones. B. Message from mother’s gifts. C. Art of accepting unwanted gifts. D. Family traditions of giving gifts. C In business, there’s a speed gap: It’s the difference between how important a firm’s leaders say speed is to their competitive strategy and how fast the company actually moves. That gap is significant regardless of region, industry, company size, or strategic emphasis. Organizations fearful of losing their competitive advantage spend much time and many resources looking for ways to pick up the pace. In our study of 343 businesses, the companies that chose to go, go, go to try to gain an edge ended up with lower sales and operating incomes than those that paused at key moments to make sure they were on the right track. What’s more, the firms that “slowed down to speed up” improved their top and bottom lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher operating incomes over a three-year period. How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better? They thought differently about what “slower” and “faster” mean. Firms sometimes fail to understand the difference between operational speed (moving quickly) and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes to deliver value). Simply increasing the speed of production, for example, may be one way to try to reduce the speed difference. But that often leads to reduced value over time, in the form of lower-quality products and services. In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became more open to ideas and discussion. They encouraged new ways of thinking. And they allowed time to look back and learn. By contrast, performance suffered at firms that moved fast all the time, paid too much attention to improving efficiency, stuck to tested methods, didn’t develop team spirit among their employees, and had little time thinking about changes. Strategic speed serves as a kind of leadership. Teams that regularly take time to get things right rather than plough ahead full bore, are more successful in meeting their business goals. That kind of strategy must come from the top. 8. According to paragraph 1, what is the “speed gap” in business? A. Delay between decision and action. B. Speed difference in companies of all sizes. C. Speed gap across industries and company types. D. Gap between leaders intentions and actual speed. 9. What does the underlined part “the laws of business physics” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Fewer hours, better results. B. Less production, more value. C. More time, better performance. D. Slower operation, higher quality. 10. What can we learn about successful companies in the study? A. They focused on production speed. B. They competed through low prices. C. They avoided making major changes. D. They took time to adjust when needed. 11. What could be the best title for the text? A. Deliver Value? Plough Ahead B. Need Speed? Slow down C. Improve Quality? Serve Better D. Reduce Time? Move Faster D According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular (心脏的) disease is the leading cause of death globally, yet it is estimated that more than 75% of premature cardiovascular disease is preventable. Atrial fibrillation (心房颤动) and heart failure contribute to about 45% of all cardiovascular disease deaths. Despite significant advancements in cardiovascular disease diagnostics, prevention, and treatment, about half of the affected patients reportedly die within five years of receiving a diagnosis for a variety of reasons, including genetic and environmental factors. The researchers say the use of AI and machine learning can accelerate (加速) our ability to identify genes that have important implications for cardiovascular disease, which can lead to improvements in diagnoses and treatment. The researchers analyzed healthy patients and patients diagnosed with cardiovascular disease and used AI and machine-learning models to investigate the genes known to be associated with the most common forms of cardiovascular disease, including atrial fibrillation and heart failure. They identified a group of genes that were significantly associated with having cardiovascular disease. They also found significant differences among race, gender, and age factors based on the cardiovascular disease. While age and gender factors correlated to heart failure, age and race factors correlated to atrial fibrillation. For example, in the patients examined, the older the patient, the more likely they were to have a cardiovascular disease. “Timely understanding and precise treatment of cardiovascular disease will ultimately benefit millions of individuals by reducing the high risk for death and improving the quality of life,” Ahmed says. Future research should extend this approach by analyzing the full set of genes in patients with cardiovascular disease which may reveal important biomarkers and risk factors associated with the cardiovascular disease susceptibility. 12. What do the first two paragraphs want to tell us? A. The research approach. B. The research purpose. C. The research result. D. The research necessity. 13. Which of the following may be the most influential factor of cardiovascular disease? A. Gender. B. Race. C. Age. D. Food. 14. What will the research focus on to extend this method? A. Analysis of more aspects of the patients’ genes. B. Improvement of AI and machine learning. C. Use of the present research achievements. D. Diagnosis of atrial fibrillation and heart failure. 15. Which of the following can be the most suitable title? A. Can Cardiovascular Disease Be Timely Diagnosed? B. Can AI Diagnose Cardiovascular Disease Faster? C. Can Cardiovascular Disease Be Preventable? D. Can AI Improve Old Patients’ Life Quality? How to Have a Successful Teenage Life Everyone dreams of success in their life, don’t they? When we were little, people would ask if we were twins. We lived in the mountains and only had each other for a long time, so we weren't just brother and sister, we were best friends. Everything changed after our parents divorced. He went to live with my father, I with my mother. Sometimes he visited us and sometimes I visited them, but we grew more distant each time. By the time I was thirteen, we'd stopped hanging out altogether. I think the only time we ever spoke was at Christmas, and it was all polite but painfully awkward, like he was a complete stranger instead of my little brother. Several years later, after being accepted to a major university three thousand miles away, I made a bold plan: to drive across the country on my own. The idea of traveling alone thrilled me, filling me with excitement and a hint of nervousness, though I knew that the road could be lonely and unpredictable — endless stretches without seeing a single person, and sometimes even wild animals crossing out of nowhere. My parents, however, thought it would be safer if my brother came along as my travel companion on the long drive to college. Needless to say, we were both furious (愤怒的) about the idea. The last thing either of us wanted was to spend a week in a car together — he, with a sister he barely knew, and I, with a “babysitter” I never asked for. But it was settled. Two weeks later, we set off. For the first six hundred miles, neither of us spoke much unless absolutely necessary. The silence was thick with tension, and it didn't take long before we argued over what music to play, how fast to drive, and when to take breaks, each of us stubbornly sticking to our own way, rolling our eyes and sighing in frustration. Paragraph 1: Just when I thought the trip would be unbearable, something unexpected happened. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Still trembling from the accident, I realized he was holding my hand. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 成都市石室成飞中学2025-2026学年上期十一月月考 高2023级 英语试卷 试卷说明: 英语考试时间共120分钟,满分150分。 1. D 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段“When you get a less desirable gift. people like to say, “It’s the thought that counts.” But with my mother’s gifts, you’ve really got to wonder, “What thought was that exactly?” (当你收到一份不太理想的礼物时,人们喜欢说:“心意才是最重要的。”但是当我收到母亲的礼物时,你真的会忍不住想:“那到底是什么想法呢?”)”可知,作者在第一段提出问题是为了强调母亲送的礼物很奇怪。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Several years ago, she spent days working on a handmade clay (泥土) sculpture:a lovingly crafted, odd interpretation of my head. I took the clay head home and placed it on my bathroom counter as instructed. I soon discovered that few things terrify my two-year-old child more than a small, strange-looking version of his mother’s head staring at him while he was sitting on the toilet. 根据第四段“Someone asked me what I hoped to get for this Christmas from my mother. “Oh nothing,” I explained. You don’t “hope” for gifts from her. They’re coming — whether you want them or not. (有人问我希望今年圣诞节从母亲那里得到什么礼物。“哦,没什么,”我解释道。你不会对她的礼物抱有“希望”。不管你想要与否,它们都会来的。)”可知,作者觉得母亲的礼物是不可避免的,无论自己喜不喜欢都会收到。故选C。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“But the weird, clueless, endless and enthusiastic love that comes with my mother’s gifts is the same love with which she raised me, and it’s hers and hers alone. She has always loved me for my boring personality unconditionally, and I — with all my eyerolls and sighs by the Christmas tree — love her unconditionally as well. There’s no better gift to give a child than the knowledge that they can be weird or awkward and still feel unconditionally loved. B。 C In business, there’s a speed gap: It’s the difference between how important a firm’s leaders say speed is to their competitive strategy and how fast the company actually moves. Teams that regularly take time to get things right, rather than plough ahead full bore, are more successful in meeting their business goals. Move Faster 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. 根据文章第一段的内容“In business, there’s a speed gap: It’s the difference between how important a firm’s leaders say speed is to their competitive strategy and how fast the company actually moves. (在商业中,存在一个速度差距:它指的是公司领导层声称速度与竞争策略的重要性,与公司实际行动速度之间的差异。)”可知,商业中的“速度差距”是指公司领导层的意图与实际速度之间的差距。故选D。 【9题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第三段中“How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better?(他们是如何违背商业法则的,比竞争对手花更多时间却也能表现地更好吗?)” 故选A。 根据文章第四段的内容“In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary.(在我们的研究中,具有战略速度的高绩效公司总是在必要时做出改变。)” 根据文章第一段的内容“In business, there’s a speed gap: It’s the difference between how important a firm’s leaders say speed is to their competitive strategy and how fast the company actually moves. (在商业领域,存在着一种速度差异:这指的是企业高层所认为的“速度”对于其竞争策略的重要性与公司实际行动的速度之间的差距。)”以及后文对战略速度重要性的讨论可知,文章主要讨论了商业中的速度差距以及战略速度的重要性,强调有时候放慢速度反而能更快达到目标。因此,选项B“Need Speed? Slow down(需要速度吗?放慢脚步)”最符合文章主旨。故选B。 D According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular (心脏的) disease is the leading cause of death globally, yet it is estimated that more than 75% of premature cardiovascular disease is preventable. 12. D 13. C 14. A 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Just when I thought the trip would be unbearable, something unexpected happened. We were driving through a remote stretch of countryside when a deer darted out from the woods. I slammed on the brakes instinctively, and the car skidded sharply on the wet road before coming to a halt. My heart raced as I stared at the deer, which stood frozen for a second before vanishing into the trees. When I finally calmed down, I realized the car wouldn’t start — the engine just sputtered and died. We were in the middle of nowhere, with no cell phone signal. I sighed, feeling helpless, but to my surprise, my brother didn’t snap at me like I expected. Instead, he got out of the car and knelt down to check the engine, saying, “Let’s see what’s wrong.” Still trembling from the accident, I realized he was holding my hand. His palm was warm, and his grip was firm — a gesture I hadn’t felt from him in years. “It’s gonna be okay,” he said softly, his voice free of the usual irritation. We worked together for over an hour: he popped the hood and checked the wires, while I fetched tools from the trunk and held a flashlight for him. When the engine finally roared to life, we both laughed in relief. On the rest of the drive, we talked more — about our favorite childhood memories of playing in the mountains, about the things we’d missed while living apart. By the time we reached my university, the tension was gone. As I got out of the car, he hugged me and said, “Call me if you need anything.” That trip didn’t just get me to college; it brought my brother back to me. 词汇激活 行为类 ①迅速窜出:dart out/rush out ②盯,凝视:stare at/peer at ③消失:vanish/disappear 情绪类 ①令我惊讶的是:to my surprise/to my amazement ②柔和地:softly/mildly 【点睛】[高分句型1] We were driving through a remote stretch of countryside when a deer darted out from the woods.(when引导的时间状语从句) [高分句型2] My heart raced as I stared at the deer, which stood frozen for a second before vanishing into the trees.
