It seemed impossible to fly to another place many years ago. In fact, science has made it real. Could fantasy stories become true with the help of science?
Sleeping Beauty
Could anyone sleep for 100 years? Of course not. But some animals and plants sleep long. Bears and snakes sleep for months through the winter. They slow down their breath, lower body temperatures and don’t eat or drink. Some seeds can dry themselves out and hide in the dark for years. If scientists can move the characteristics (特性) to humans, Sleeping Beauty might be born.
Talking to animals
In the real world, talking to animals isn’t easy, but scientists are working towards it. Tiny (极小的) cameras have collected thousands of hours’ animal conversations. Then, special programs (程序) connect (把…联系起来) the sounds to possible meanings. These programs may let us talk back to animals in the future.
Invisible coat (隐形衣)
Some animals are quite good at changing colours to hide themselves. If you want to have an invisible coat, here is good news for you! Scientists have invented new materials that can change the directions of light around objects. So far, they have managed to hide tiny objects. Hiding larger objects, such as humans, is too hard, but the new materials could cover our coat and make us at least harder to be seen (被看见).
1. What do bears and snakes probably do while sleeping through the winter?

In China, short dramas are getting more and more popular these days. A short drama usually lasts only a few minutes per episode (集). Why do so many people love them? There are some important reasons.
First, people now live a busy life. They have only small pieces of free time, like when they are on the bus or before sleeping. Short dramas fit this kind of “fragmented (碎片化的) time” well. People can finish one episode easily in their free moments.
Second, short dramas tell simple but exciting stories. Many of them have plots (情节) like “becoming better and beating others”. These stories help people feel relaxed and let out their stress from daily life. The fast-paced stories also bring strong feelings to viewers.
Third, short dramas have many different topics, such as love, city life and growth. Some stories are close to people’s real life. This makes it easy for viewers to feel connected with the characters.
Last, making and spreading short dramas is not hard. They take a short time to make — usually one to two weeks. And they spread quickly on social media platforms like TikTok. Big video platforms, such as Tencent Video, also support short dramas a lot.

Grown-ups (成年人) never understand anything on their own, and it is tiring for children to be always and forever explaining things to them. So then I chose another job and learned to fly airplanes. I lived my life alone, without anyone that I could really talk to, until I had an accident (事故) with my plane in the desert of Sahara six years ago. Something was wrong with my plane. As I had nobody else with me, I decided to try the difficult repairs all alone.
The first night, I went to sleep on the sand, a thousand miles from humans’ living places. I felt quite lonely. You can imagine my surprise, at sunrise, when I was awakened by a strange little voice. It said, “If you please, draw me a sheep!”
“What?” I shouted, jumping to my feet, completely surprised. I looked carefully all around me. I saw a most special small person, who stood there, looking at me seriously. He was hardly taller than a rosebush.
Before I could speak, he repeated, “Draw me a sheep!”
I had never drawn a sheep before, but I was so surprised and lonely that I did as he asked. I drew a simple sheep, but he shook (摇动) his head, “No, that one is sickly. Make another.” I tried again, but he said, “This one has too many horns (角). It’s not what I want.” I drew a third, and a fourth, until I grew tired. “I don’t know how to draw sheep any more,” I said, handing him a piece of paper with nothing on it. “Here’s a box. The sheep you want is inside it.”
To my surprise, his face lit up, “That’s just what I need! Does it eat a lot of grass?”
“Of course. Why do you ask?”
“Because where I live, everything is very small. I need a sheep that won’t eat up all my roses.”
Roses. The word made me think of the time I was six years old. I found a book named True Stories from Nature, and there was a picture of a huge snake swallowing (吞咽) an elephant. I showed it to grown-ups and asked if it made them scared. They said, “Why would a hat make us scared?” I explained (解释) it wasn’t a hat — it was a huge snake with an elephant inside. But they told me to stop talking about snakes and elephants. They said I should focus on my spelling and arithmetic (算术). That’s when I realized grown-ups never see the true meaning of things. I put away my drawing and decided not to explain anything to them any more.
The little prince pulled me back to the present, “Will you promise (承诺) the sheep won’t eat my roses?”
“I promise,” I said. And in that moment, I knew I had finally found someone I could talk to.
—Adapted from The Little Prince

C. The writer’s drawing of the snake and the elephant made people scared.
D. Grown-ups cared more about children’s studies than the true meaning of things.
2. Why did the writer think he finally found someone he could talk to?
A. Because the little prince was good at drawing.
B. Because the little prince could understand him.
C. Because the little prince lived in a place with roses.
D. Because the little prince liked small animals, too.
3. Which is the correct order of what happened in the story?
①The writer met a little prince in the desert.
②The writer decided to try to repair his plane alone.
③The writer told the little prince the sheep was inside the box.
④The writer slept on the sand and felt lonely on the first night in the desert.
⑤The writer showed grown-ups the picture of a snake swallowing an elephant.
A. ②①⑤④③ B. ⑤①②④③ C. ②④①③⑤ D. ⑤②④①③
4. What is the best title for the story?
A. Meeting the Little Prince B. The Accident in the Desert
C. The Art of Drawing Sheep D. Grown-ups and Drawings

Can you imagine being able to borrow books from a library without having to return them?
The Civilian Mobile Library offers books for free. Readers are invited to take one book every15 days. They are encouraged to pass it on to someone else once they’ve finished reading. And they don’t need to return the book.
The library is only seven square meters in size but houses thousands of books on different subjects. “It might be the smallest library in the world,” said Xu Dawei, the owner. “But in another sense, it’s also the biggest because the books keep moving.”
“I’ve read thousands of books,” Xu said. “Books have truly changed my life. The idea of starting a library took shape in 2000, when Xu recommended online a list (清单) of his favorite books to readers, but many of them said they couldn’t find those books nearby. So he began sending his books to readers for free. “They all wrote me letters expressing their thanks. It encouraged me to take it farther, turning my book-gifting into a physical space,” Xu said.
