A famous American poet Robert Frost once said, “Poetry is what gets lost in translation. ”But XuYuanchong, well-known Chinese translator, had tried to convey the beauty of ancient Chinese poetry throughout his life. His teacher Qian Zhongshu commented on his poetry translation, “You are dancing while chained by rhyme and rhythm, but the dance shows amazing freedom and beauty, which is quite impressive.”
Since 1978, Xu had published more than 100 translated works in Chinese, English and French, reaching millions of readers at home and abroad. Most notably, he translated Chinese poems into rhymed verses in both English and French. He was also the first Asian winner of the Aurora Borealis Prize for Outstanding Translation of Fiction Literature.
Xu was known to be very fastidious in his work. For him, English is a “ scientific” language that needs exactness while Chinese is an “artistic” language that includes a wider range of content. Following this principle, Xu kept not only faithfulness in the sense but beauty in sensibility in his translation.
Through Xu’s translations, time-honored Chinese wisdom has made an impact on Western societies and the world. For example, when former US president Barack Obama tried to begin a healthcare project during his presidency, some senators disagreed at first. But after reading the poem titled Fishing in Snow translated by Xu, one senator was so impressed with the fisherman’s independent thinking that he chose to part with the party line to support Obama.
Having made such great achievements, Xu maintained a routine. Every day he translated about1, 000 words, working till 3 to 4 a. m., sleeping for about 3 hours and getting up at 6 a. m. to continue.“ Translation is a means of communicating with the writer’s soul. A sudden flicker of a good word or a good line thrills every pore (毛孔) and every inch of my skin,” Xu said.
4. What does the text tell us about Xu Yuanchong?
A. He mastered at least three foreign languages.
B. He translated about 100 Chinese works into English.
C. He was the first winner of the Aurora Borcalis Prize.
D. He was widely known for his translated rhymed verses.
5. What does the underlined word “fastidious” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Particular. B. Satisfied. C. Inventive. D. Productive.
6. Why does the author give the example in Paragraph 4?
A. To recommend Xu’s translation works. B. To stress the charm of Chinese poetry.
C. To show Xu’s great translation skills. D. To prove the wisdom of the ancient Chinese.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Xu?
A. Thoughtful and modest. B. Generous and objective
C. Creative and open-minded. D. Devoted and hard-working.

Scientists have come up with a new way of identifying animals in an area by testing DNA sucked out of the air. The researchers believe their new method could help scientists keep track of animals that are hard to spot, including endangered animals.
Two teams of scientists — one in Denmark and one in the United Kingdom — came up with the same question at about the same time: Could they identify the animals in an area from DNA that was simply floating in the air?
Testing for eDNA (“environmental” DNA) isn’t a new idea, but most of the time, scientists look for eDNA in water, DNA in the air is usually so small that it would take a microscope to see it. The scientists didn’t have high hopes for their experiment.
Neither team knew that the other group was working on a similar experiment. One collected samples from different locations at Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo, and the other at Hamerton Zoo Park in the UK. The scientists used slightly different methods to collect their samples. But basically, both teams used vacuums (真空装置) and fans to collect extremely tiny bits of DNA onto very high quality filters (过滤器).
In the laboratory, they got the DNA from the filters and made copies of it to study. By comparing their samples with examples of DNA from different animals, the scientists were able to identify many different animals at the zoos.
The researchers in Denmark identified 49 different kinds of animals. The team in the UK identified 25 different kinds of animals. They even identified DNA from animals that were inside sealed buildings. Each team only discovered the other experiment after they had written a paper about their own results. Instead of competing, the two decided to combine their results and publish a paper together.
Both teams are excited about the ways this new method could be used in the wild. Scientists have been looking for better ways to track endangered animals without interfering with them. If researchers know where animals live, they can do a better job of protecting them. “The next step is to figure out how to take this method into nature,” says Dr. Bohmann.
8. What was the scientists’ attitude towards their experiment at first?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Disappointed. D. Satisfied.
9. Which description about the two teams is correct?
A. They knew each other very well before.
B. Both of them are from the same country.
C. Their research methods were not exactly the same.
D. They cooperated from the beginning of their experiments.
10. What is the positive effect of this experiment?
A. It increases human interaction with wildlife.
B. It enables the two teams to compete in science.
C. It could help people escape from dangerous animals.
D It could help protect endangered animals in a better way.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Groundbreaking Way to Test DNA B. DNA of Animals in the UK and Denmark
C. Scientists Identify Animals by DNA in the Air D. Two Experimental Teams Doing the Same Thing
Dogs feel their way through the world with their noses. Researchers have started imitating this super skill with an artificial-intelligence-based detective tool. In a study published in February in PLOS ONE, a multinational team reported an AI-powered system that is as accurate as trained dogs at correctly identifying cases of prostate cancer from urine samples. Andreas Mershin, a research scientist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wants to eventually integrate the technology into smartphones: There would be a tiny sensor in the phone with AI software running in the cloud.
Prostate cancer, the second most deadly cancer in men worldwide, is difficult to detect. The most widely used test can miss 15 percent of cancers. Trained dogs, on the other hand, were able to identify patients with prostate cancer from urine samples more than 96 percent of the time. Yet dogs can get bored and tired, so researchers want to develop an AI system that works more consistently.
Living cells produce chemicals that come out from the skin, blood, urine and breath. Artificial noses, including the "Nano Nose" that Mershin and one of his colleagues developed, can already detect those chemicals at the same parts-per-billion concentration as dogs. The team added to the chemical sensing an artificial neural network—a type of AI algorithm that can learn from looking at examples how to identify faces, for instance.
As the 2015 Journal of Urology study showed, dogs can be trained to reach more than 96 percent accuracy, and the AI can be trained to reach that same rate. Mershin plans to train the AI algorithm using data from the "Nano Nose", which is currently one third the size of an iPhone 10 and could be further shrunk to be integrated into smartphones.
12. What is the Nano Nose?
A. A device. B. A method.
C. A database. D. A research team.
13. What is the advantage of the AI system over trained dogs in detecting prostate cancer?
A. It has the ability to sense chemicals. B. It can collect samples in the cloud.
C. It has the minimum error. D. It can ensure consistency.
14. Which of the following can best replace he underlined word "shrunk" in Paragraph 4?
A. Made smaller. B. Cut shorter. C. Expanded. D. Upgraded.
15. What is the ultimate goal of the research?
A To train dogs to detect diseases. B. To identify artificial faces.
C. To produce AI noses to detect diseases. D. To add an AI sensor to the smartphone.

New invention to get astronauts moving in space
NASA says that astronauts can lose as much as 10% of their bone density (骨密度) when they’re in space. That’s because there is no gravity for their bodies to push against. ___16___. It is a machine that allows them to jump in zero gravity.
Jumping in zero gravity would help build up bone density and muscle mass rather than astronauts losing this while in space. ___17___. This is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevent them from losing too much muscle and bone density. John Kennett, the engineer of this project, says that his machine would cut the works down to just six minutes a day! It will allow astronauts to take part in a short but intense workout designed to build both muscle mass and bone density.
John says that jumping is important to maintain good bone density. ___18___. So he thinks his invention is the perfect solution.
Former NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao says that exercising while in space is very important for a successful recovery once back on earth. He says he would welcome shorter workouts to ensure other duties on the spacecraft can still be completed. ___19___. “When you’re jumping on this you can really feel it from your toes right through your shoulders,” she says.
Experts say this machine could also save much- needed space on board. ___20___. And it’s hoped it will join some astronauts in space by 2026!
A. However, jumping in zero gravity is really hard.
B. Now, astronauts don’t spend much time exercising.
C. Next year the machine will be tested in zero gravity.
D. Some people wonder whether the machine will work in space.
E. At the moment astronauts spend up to two hours a day, six days a week exercising.
F. An engineer from London has found the solution to keeping astronauts fit and healthy in space.
G. Tess Morris- Paterson, who has been testing the machine, says the workout gives her full- body benefits.

D. It could help protect endangered animals in a better way.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Groundbreaking Way to Test DNA B. DNA of Animals in the UK and Denmark
C. Scientists Identify Animals by DNA in the Air D. Two Experimental Teams Doing the Same Thing
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. C

A Made smaller. B. Cut shorter. C. Expanded. D. Upgraded.
15. What is the ultimate goal of the research?
A. To train dogs to detect diseases. B. To identify artificial faces.
C. To produce AI noses to detect diseases. D. To add an AI sensor to the smartphone.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. A 15. D
