James Beard Award-winning Chef Kwame Onwuachi is one of his generation’s most celebrated cooking voices — part storyteller, part cultural architect. But cooking was never his career path initially.
Growing up in a South Bronx apartment in New York, he helped his mom run a small cooking business from their kitchen. What felt like just a boring task back then shaped his love for food. Living in the Bronx taught him about cultural diversity: he got to taste global flavors and meet people from different backgrounds. Spending a few years in Nigeria with his dad’s family also deepened his connection to food — he picked papayas (木瓜), raised chickens, and witnessed how much care went into every dish.
Cooking only became a career when he needed to support himself. Although he tried retail (零售) and odd jobs, he always returned to the kitchen. As a young black chef, he faced unfair judgments in the industry. However, these challenges didn’t stop him — they motivated him. Kwame describes the past five years as a “renaissance”: more chefs are sharing their culture through food, and long-forgotten black chefs now have more opportunities to put their heritage on a plate.
For Kwame, food is more than just fuel and each dish tells a story. While he is constantly innovating, he believes tradition is never far behind. The best version of a dish does not require changing its core. Instead, it is about preparing a dish in the best way possible and ultimately preserving tradition.
Today, the name Chef Kwame goes far beyond the kitchen. His restaurant like Tatiana has been fully booked since 2022. In late 2025, he’ll open Maroon — a steakhouse in Las Vegas — making it the first black chef-led restaurant there.
This August, he brought back “The Family Reunion,” a four-day food festival celebrating black excellence in food. Now in its fifth year, the event held in Virginia’s Salamander Resort gathered 40 top chefs. Kwame started it because black food voices are often ignored. “I wanted a space where my people can come together,” he says. “And have an event where you don’t just leave your stomach full, but also your heart and mind.”
4. What initially led Kwame to develop a passion for food?
A. Traveling globally. B. Winning cooking awards.
C. Running his own restaurant. D. Assisting his mom’s business.
5. What does the underlined word “renaissance” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Revival. B. Occupation. C. Resistance. D. Separation.
6. What can we learn about Kwame?
A. He has expanded Tatiana to Las Vegas.
B. He values both tradition and innovation.
C. He advocates choosing native ingredients.
D. He first worked as an architect in New York.
7. Why did Kwame start “The Family Reunion”?
A. To advertise his new restaurant. B. To honor his family in Nigeria.
C. To build a platform for black food. D. To instruct young chefs in cooking.

The moai statues on Easter Island, Chile have long been a mystery. Out of all the questions that have confused archaeologists since the discovery of these massive statues, the biggest ones are how the statues were moved—each weighs several tons. Now, a new study in the Journal of Archaeological Science might hold the answer.
Most moai statues are on the edge of the island. Believed to have been carved at the inland Rano Raraku quarry(采石场), the statues were later transported to stone platforms near the coast. There, they were positioned one next to another, facing the island’s center like protectors. Though the quarry is less than a mile from the coast, moving a moai with limited tools was extremely hard.
Easter Island’s oral traditions say the moai “walked” from the quarry. To find out what that looked like, archaeologists Carl Lipo and Terry Hunt from Binghamton University investigated 962 moai, suggesting the statues were moved with ropes. People would swing the moai from side to side to make it move forward.
Three key elements made this work: the ground slope (斜坡), the moai’s center of weight, and their D-shaped bases. The rounded base acted as a supporting point, and a 6-15 degrees tilt (倾斜) shifted weight to the base’s front edge. Tilting the moai sideways made it fall forward—slowed by rope-holding movers — creating a rocking “walk.” Once it reached the platform, workers carved off the tilted part to make the moai more stable.
To confirm their assumption, the scientists made a copy of a moai weighing 4.79 tons. With 18 volunteers — 4 holding the left rope, 4 the right rope, and 10 the back rope, they moved the copy 328 feet in 40 minutes. The people of Easter Island might have used fewer people and more time to move real moai.
Lipo and Hunt’s research shows that the Easter Islanders understood physics well — especially how things move back and forth and also proves they did amazing work with a small population, relying on joint efforts.
8. What puzzled archaeologists most about the moai statues?
A. Its moving process. B. Its mysterious origin.
C. Its cultural meaning. D. Its carving method.
9. What is the purpose of the third paragraph?
A. To explain the crucial function of ropes.
B. To criticize previous research on moai.
C. To describe the life of Easter Islanders.
D. To offer a solution to transporting the moai.
10. What did the scientists’ experiment prove?
A. Moving real moai required more people.
B. Easter Island’s oral traditions are baseless.
C. The assumption of moai “walk” is convincing.
D. Easter Islanders moved the moai more efficiently.
11. What can be inferred about ancient Easter Islanders?
A. They lived in large groups.
B. They were intelligent and cooperative.
C. They preferred to avoid physical work.
D. They lacked tool-making techniques.
D
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are critical to modern cities, safeguarding public health by handling billions of liters of wastewater every day. But as the world races to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a key source is slipping under the radar (雷达): the wastewater industry itself.
In a new study published in Environmental Science and Ecotechnology (July 2025), researchers from Harbin Institute of Technology challenge the current ways of counting WWTPs’ greenhouse gases. They warn that conventional approaches significantly underestimate the industry’s effect on climate—especially when it comes to fossil carbon dioxide (CO2).
It’s well known that WWTPs release methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) during biological treatment and waste handling. These are two strong greenhouse gases. But fewer people understand the role of fossil CO2, released from man-made chemicals like detergents (去污剂) and industrial wastewater. This carbon originates from fossil sources and it adds to atmospheric CO2, but most emission lists don’t include it.
Using radiocarbon (放射性碳) analysis, the study’s authors found that fossil carbon makes up 4-28% of all carbon in the wastewater that enters WWTPs. Most of this fossil carbon turns into CO2 and is released during treatment. But this invisible flow of emission is ignored in most official climate reports, “Wastewater is not just a public hygiene (卫生) issue — it’s a climate issue,” said Dr. Haiyan Li, who led the study. “By forgetting fossil CO2 and relying on outdated estimation methods, we’re reporting fewer greenhouse gases than we should.”
To help cities switch to low-carbon wastewater treatment, the authors advocate for real-time, multi-gas monitoring systems and the inclusion of fossil CO2 in national climate lists. This would let local governments and plant operators make emission-cutting plans based on real site conditions, not assumptions. “We need better data to drive better policies,” the research team said. “Smarter monitoring tools can bridge the gap between science and action.”
This research emphasizes a broader shift in thinking: wastewater treatment plants — long seen just as a tool for hygiene — must also be seen as a key part of fighting climate change.
12. What does the author mean by saying “a key source is slipping under the radar” in paragraph 1?
A. A key emission source is unnoticed. B. Fossil fuels are overused in WWTPs.
C. Methane release is unmonitored. D. Emission counting tools are outdated.
13. Why is fossil CO2, left out of most emission lists?
A. It is released in a small amount. B. It comes from natural breakdown.
C. Its source is not well recognized. D. It is impossible to be detected.
14. What do the researchers suggest to solve the problem?
A. Stopping using man-made chemicals.
B. Adding fossil CO2 to climate records.
C. Reducing methane and nitrous oxide.
D. Closing old-fashioned wastewater plants.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Strategies to Fight Climate Change
B. The Trends in Greenhouse Gas Emissions
C. Low-Carbon Methods for Wastewater Treatment
D. Underestimated WWTPs’ CO2, Emissions

“I’m afraid you can’t come aboard without the fare, dear,” the bus driver, Mr. Thompson, informed a young girl who had attempted to board with just a handful of coins. She appeared to be about 8 years old, and he was feeling particularly impatient that day.
“Could you please, sir? I really need to visit my grandma,” the little girl said, her eyes wide with hope. “You’ll have to get the money from your parents and try again,” Mr. Thompson replied, gently but firmly, signaling for her to step off. Feeling sad, she slowly walked away from the bus and sat down at the bus stop, her head hanging low as the bus drove off.
Mr. Thompson finished driving his bus and went back home to have lunch. He said hello to his wife, Mrs. Thompson, and then he sat down on the couch to relax. While he was looking at his phone, he saw a picture of the little girl he had seen earlier. The picture said she was “Missing,” and her family was looking for her everywhere. This made Mr. Thompson feel very shocked and worried.
“Oh no, what did I do?” Mr. Thompson thought to himself as he quickly stood up and ran to the door. Mrs. Thompson was surprised by his sudden action. Mr. Thompson told her seriously, “Sweetheart, quickly call 911 and this number on the post.” He showed her the picture of the girl. “I saw her at the bus stop before, but I didn’t let her on the bus because she didn’t have enough money. I need to go and find her, so please make those calls.” After quickly telling her where the bus stop was, he rushed out of the house.
Mr. Thompson hurried to his car, his heart beating fast as he drove quickly to the bus stop, hoping the girl was still there. He felt bad for not being more careful and for not understanding how much she needed help. As he drove, he decided to be kinder and more thoughtful in the future, especially to those who need protection. He realized how important it is to be kind to others because our actions can really affect their lives.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
At last, Mr. Thompson spotted a small figure on the bench where he had last seen the girl.

D 5. A 6. B 7. C

根据第二段首句“Growing up in a South Bronx apartment in New York, he helped his mom run a small cooking business from their kitchen. What felt like just a boring task back then shaped his love for food. (他在纽约南布朗克斯区的一间公寓里长大,那时他帮妈妈在厨房里经营着一家小型餐饮生意。那时看起来只是件枯燥乏味的工作,却逐渐培养了他对美食的热爱。)”可知,夸梅年少时帮母亲在厨房经营小餐饮生意,这份当时看似枯燥的工作,逐渐培养了他对食物的热爱。故选D。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据后文“more chefs are sharing their culture through food, and long-forgotten black chefs now have more opportunities to put their heritage on a plate (越来越多的厨师通过食物来传播他们的文化,而那些早已被遗忘的黑人厨师如今也有了更多机会将他们的传统呈现于餐盘之上。)” 故选A。
根据第四段的“While he is constantly innovating, he believes tradition is never far behind. The best version of a dish does not require changing its core. Instead, it is about preparing a dish in the best way possible and ultimately preserving tradition. (尽管他一直在不断创新,但他坚信传统永远不会落后于他。一道菜肴的最佳版本并不需要改变其核心要素。相反,关键在于以最佳方式来烹制这道菜,并最终保留传统。)”可知,虽然夸梅在不断创新,但他相信传,一道菜最好不需要改变它的核心,而是以最好的方式准备这道菜,并最终保留传统。故选B。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Kwame started it because black food voices are often ignored. “I wanted a space where my people can come together,” he says. “And have an event where you don’t just leave your stomach full, but also your heart and mind.”(夸梅发起这个活动是因为黑人美食的声音常常被忽视。“我希望有一个能让我们的族人聚集在一起的场所,”他说,“举办一场活动,让大家不仅能让肚子填饱,还能让心灵和头脑也得到满足。”)”可知,夸梅创办“家庭团聚”美食节,是因为黑人在饮食领域的声音常被忽视,他希望为黑人打造一个交流平台,让他们的饮食文化被看到。故选C。

A 9. D 10. C 11. B

A Stopping using man-made chemicals.
B. Adding fossil CO2, to climate records.
C. Reducing methane and nitrous oxide.
D. Closing old-fashioned wastewater plants.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Strategies to Fight Climate Change
B. The Trends in Greenhouse Gas Emissions
C. Low-Carbon Methods for Wastewater Treatment
D. Underestimated WWTPs’ CO2, Emissions
A 13. C 14. B 15. D

句中已有谓语动词is said,空处应为非谓语动词,a suborbital space travel与schedule之间是被动关系,即“亚轨道太空旅行被安排”,所以用过去分词scheduled作后置定语,修饰a suborbital space travel。

故填an。
故填which。
故填without。
故填to adapt。

“Oh no what did I do?” Mr.
