Daily runs can be boring and tiring for high school athletes, even for cross-country runners who love the sport. Inspiring them over the summer break can be even harder. Some coaches send out training plans, and others offer prizes. Luis Escobar, who was the cross-country team coach at St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria, California, was brainstorming with his wife when she hit on an idea: get a pack of cute, energetic shelter dogs to go out with his runners.
“The dogs need more physical and mental excitement, as well as social time with other dogs and people. They want to go out and run; the kids love dogs, and they love running. It was a perfect marriage,” said Escobar.
He reached out to a local animal shelter, and it was on board. After the shelter staff gave the athletes a meeting on best practices for running with dogs, the students set out to find their lovely partners. Escobar took a video of the outing and shared the sweet scene on social media. Little did Escobar know then that the 60-second video would fly across the Internet with hundreds of thousands of views overnight. “It just went out of control in a very, very good way,” said Escobar.
The video inspired other schools to find their own puppy “trainers”. “Our athletic director was getting messages and emails from other athletic directors around the country, wanting to know how they could do this project at their school,” Escobar said.
Not only did the shelter dog run become a main training activity for St. Joseph’s cross-country team, but it also resulted in some adoptions, unexpectedly. “Many, many dogs were adopted as a result of this,” Escobar said. “That is the thing that I am probably most proud of.”
“It’s really cool that this one thing that is so simple could be so impactful,” Escobar said. He is not surprised his short video gained such popularity. “It was 60 seconds of sincere, organized kindness,” he said. “The world needs kindness.”
4. Why did Escobar choose shelter dogs for training?
A. They lift the athletes’ team spirit. B. They raise recognition of the event.
C. They need to stay physically strong. D. They add fun and willingness to training.
5. What was the result of the running activity?
A. It inspired more daily running.
B. It received funding for the events.
C. It improved teenage athletes' fitness.
D. It gained immediate attention and admiration.
6. What does Escobar think of the shelter dog run?
A. Small but influential. B. Tough but interesting.
C. Unexpected and risky. D. Formal and educational.
7. Which of the following best describes this running activity?
A. Share roses and get fun. B. Kill two birds with one stone.
C. Do good and throw it into the sea. D. Put your eggs in multiple baskets.
D 5. D 6. A 7. B

Children are born with the curiosity to explore. Yet over time they are becoming less curious about science. Why? This loss of interest may be partly the result of language cues (提示) children hear. And these cues don’t come just from parents; they can also come from school teachers who treat science as an identity rather than actions.
When talking to children, many adults might say things like “Let’s be scientists today!” or “You’re such a good scientist!”. But this kind of identity-focused language, which focuses on science as an identity rather than activities and actions that people do, can be demoralizing for young children. One study showed that children as young as four, especially girls, kept their interest longer when their cue to participate in science activities was “Let’s do science” rather than “Let’s be scientists.”
One possibility is that when thinking of a scientist, children might picture a white man. If they don’t share that identity, they lose interest in an activity designed “for scientists.” This stereotypical (刻板印象的) belief that science is reserved for only certain-kinds of people emerges surprisingly early. By the first grade, when asked to draw a scientist, children tend to draw a white man.
The good news is that language cues can also be directed to promote engagement with science. Describing science as actions that we take, for example, seems to protect young children’s interest in science over time. But it’s also true that teenagers are actively trying on and ultimately forming different identities for themselves. So in contrast to its demoralizing effects on young children, identity-focused language may help teens stay interested in science. In another study, cueing a future identity based on science (such as “scientist” or “doctor”) motivated middle schoolers to do more homework and was associated with higher grades.
Consequently, adults had better use different language cues for children of different age groups to maintain their curiosity about science.
8. What does the underlined word “demoralizing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Inappropriate. B. Impolite. C. Unconvincing. D. Discouraging.
9. Why was action-focused language especially effective to young girls?
A. Because it avoids identity conflict in girls’ mind.
B. Because stereotypical belief is reserved for girls.
C. Because it enhances girls’ engagement in science.
D. Because it shows the activity is designed for girls.
10. What may be the author’s suggestion for parents and teachers?
A. To treat language as cues. B. To use identity-focused language.
C. To adopt flexible strategies. D. To help teenagers form identities.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Is Action Better than Identity? B. How Do Parents Raise Young Scientists?
C. How Does Age Affect Science Learning? D. What Affects Children’s Interest in Science?
D 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据第二段中的“But this kind of identity-focused language, which focuses on science as an identity rather than activities and actions that people do, can be demoralizing for young children. One study showed that children as young as four, especially girls, kept their interest longer when their cue to participate in science activities was “Let’s do science” rather than “Let’s be scientists.”(但这种以身份为核心的语言,将科学视为一种身份,而非人们所做的活动和行动,可能会对幼儿造成demoralizing影响。一项研究表明,4岁的孩子,尤其是女孩,当参与科学活动的提示是“让我们做科学”而不是“让我们成为科学家”时,能保持更长时间的兴趣。)”可知,以身份为核心的语言会让幼儿难以保持兴趣,因此“demoralizing”意为“令人气馁的”。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“One possibility is that when thinking of a scientist, children might picture a white man. If they don’t share that identity, they lose interest in an activity designed “for scientists.”(一种可能性是,当想到科学家时,孩子们可能会想到一个白人男性。如果他们没有这种身份认同,就会对为“科学家”设计的活动失去兴趣。)”以及第二段中行动导向语言让幼儿(尤其女孩)保持兴趣的研究结果可知,行动导向语言对女孩特别有效,是因为它避免了女孩心中的身份冲突。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“Consequently, adults had better use different language cues for children of different age groups to maintain their curiosity about science.(因此,成年人最好对不同年龄段的孩子使用不同的语言提示,以保持他们对科学的好奇心。)”

Facial expressions are the primary way people show emotion and understand the feelings of others. Happiness, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone. ___16___
Fortunately, you can regain some control over communication by working with what you have left — the eyes. If you want to increase understanding with a masked individual, you should look them in the eyes. ___17___ Eye contact needs extra brain power and becomes uncomfortable after only three seconds. But bear in mind, eye contact can also make you appear more intelligent and trustworthy.
You might be surprised how much information is conveyed by the body itself. For instance, when someone is happy, they lift their head; when they are sad, they drop their head. Learning how people use their bodies to convey emotion may help reduce the uncertainty you feel when communicating with someone in a mask. ___18___ When engaged in a conversation, you can appear more attentive by turning your body toward the individual, leaning in or nodding. To let another person know you want to start speaking, straighten your posture, or nod more frequently.
Don’t forget the impact of your voice. ___19___ Along with the actual words, you also use volume, tone and pauses to convey your message. For instance, a whisper may indicate sadness or insecurity, whereas a higher-pitched shout could show anger or intensity.
___20___ As long as you adopt proper manners, good communication still can be achieved though faces are partially covered.
A. It may be easier said than done.
B. Become aware of your own body language, too.
C. It’s not just what you say, but it’s how you say it.
D. Social distance doesn’t have to mean socially distant.
E. Raising your voice can alter the message you are trying to send.
F. But when part of the face is masked, it becomes tougher to recognize them.
G. You can use your body and voice to convey the emotions your mask might hide.
F 17. A 18. B 19. C 20. D
由上文“Facial expressions are the primary way people show emotion and understand the feelings of others. Happiness, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone. (面部表情是人们表达情感和理解他人感受的主要方式。快乐、悲伤、厌恶、恐惧和惊讶都可以通过面部表情来传达。)”可知,这里主要讲人们可通过面部表情表达各种情感,而F项But when part of the face is masked, it becomes tougher to recognize them.(但当面部的一部分被掩盖时,识别它们变得更加困难。)符合语境,与上文形成转折,其中them指代上文 Happiness, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise。故选F项。
由上文“If you want to increase understanding with a masked individual, you should look them in the eyes. (如果你想增进对戴口罩人的理解,你应该直视他们的眼睛。)” 可知,与戴口罩人交流可以看他们的眼睛,而下文“Eye contact needs extra brain power and becomes uncomfortable after only three seconds.(眼神交流需要额外的脑力,仅仅三秒钟后就会变得不舒服。)” It may be easier said than done.(说起来容易做起来难。)符合语境,有承上启下作用,其中It代指前文 you should look them in the eyes。故选A项。
由下文“When engaged in a conversation, you can appear more attentive by turning your body toward the individual, leaning in or nodding. To let another person know you want to start speaking, straighten your posture, or nod more frequently.(在交谈中,你可以通过将身体转向对方、身体前倾或点头来显得更加专注。为了让别人知道你想开始说话,挺直你的姿势,或者更频繁地点头。)”可知,这里主要讲在交流中要注意自己的肢体语言,所以B项Become aware of your own body language, too.(也要注意自己的肢体语言。)
由下文“Along with the actual words, you also use volume, tone and pauses to convey your message. For instance, a whisper may indicate sadness or insecurity, whereas a higher- pitched shout could show anger or intensity.(除了实际的单词,你还可以使用音量、语调和停顿来传达你的信息。例如,耳语可能表示悲伤或不安全感,而高音喊叫可能表示愤怒或强烈。)”可知,这里建议要注意说话方式,所以C项It’s not just what you say, but it’s how you say it.(这不仅仅是你说什么,而是你怎么说。)
由下文“As long as you adopt proper manners, good communication still can be achieved though faces are partially covered.(只要你举止得体,即使脸被部分遮住,也能实现良好的沟通。)” Social distance doesn’t have to mean socially distant.(社交隔离并不一定意味着社交疏远。)

Dear Jane,
I’m so excited to know you’ll visit my city this weekend. I strongly recommend Future Tech Park, a super cool spot for a relaxing trip.
What makes it special is that it mixes nature with fantastic technological elements. You’ll see solar-powered chairs to charge your phone, interactive screens that teach you about plants, and wearable sports supplies to measure your body conditions after exercising. The park has a big grassland for walking, and a small lake where you can watch cute ducks. It’s never too noisy, so you can calm down while enjoying both nature and cool technology.

“Ugh, chicken rolls again? I hate chicken rolls!” Matt yelled. “I’m not eating this.” Matt’s mom and dad looked at each other. Matt’s outbursts had been happening at least once a week all summer long.
“You know what, Matt? We re going to let you take over dinnertime from now on. You can pick the meals and cook them, as long as they’re healthy,” Mom said.
“Good, we’re going to eat good food every night!” Matt answered.
The next day, Dad sat down with Matt to make the meal plan so he could go grocery shopping. Matt had already been thinking about his favorite dinners. “We’re going to have beef tonight, and spaghetti tomorrow, and macaroni (通心粉) and cheese the next day,” Matt started.
“Woah, hold on now,” Dad said. “What else are we going to have with the beef? We need to have at least one vegetable with each meal, and usually we have another side to go with it.”
“Oh, yeah. Um, we can have corn with the beef,” Matt said.
“Sophia does not like corn,” said Dad.
“Well, it’s my choice, so I’m going to make corn,” Matt replied.
“OK, but she might complain at dinner tonight. Are you ready for that?” Dad asked.
“Yeah, whatever,” Matt answered.
Matt and his dad spent the next hour figuring out the whole week’s meals and side dishes. It was a lot more work than Matt expected, and almost every time he picked something out, his dad would tell him that someone in the family wouldn’t like it. It was very frustrating. “This is impossible!” Matt said.
“Yes, it is hard. Your mother and I try very hard to make everyone happy, but everyone has different tastes, and sometimes, we just can’t please everyone.”
“Fine, we’ll have to just go with this plan this week. Next week I’ll try to make everyone happy,” replied Matt.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

When finishing grocery shopping, it was time for Matt to make his first meal. Looking at the grocery he deadly wanted to eat, Matt felt so excited and confident about the dinner to be made by him at first. But the reality gave him a lesson soon. When he tried to fry the beef, he didn’t know how to control the fire, so that the beef was burning. His parents wanted to lend him a hand but he refused it and finally he made it in the fourth time with the help of the cooking video! For the corn, he just boiled it and covered some cream on it.
Two hours had passed by before the dishes were ready on the table. Deadly exhausted, Matt felt so proud of himself and anticipated the praises from his families. “Ew, this beef tastes very odd,” Sophia said. Matt took a bite. It did taste odd. But he’d worked so hard! He felt like he might cry. “It’s OK, Matt, cooking is hard. It takes a long time to figure it out. Sophia, just be nice. Matt worked really hard on this dinner. We should appreciate it.” Mom said. “I’m sorry…” he apologized. Since then, it downed on Matt that he should treat every meal from his parents with respect and appreciation.

In just over a year, the field of generative (生成的) artificial intelligence has constantly seen extraordinary advancements. The recent introduction of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model has reduced the presence of false information, which marks a major step forward as generative AI is now better at creating images without errors and producing clear, understandable text.
Nowadays, the customization of AI for specific tasks is becoming increasingly popular, with significant support directed towards developing AI solutions for particular purposes, such as analyzing legal agreements and medical images. This emphasizes the growing employment of AI in specialized areas, increasing its influence beyond general tasks.
At first, it seemed that only large companies with significant computing power could tap into the advanced ability of AI. However, services like Hugging Face have popularized access to AI technologies, proving that even smaller models can live up to a high standard. This turning has widened the user base, allowing a wider range of individuals and organizations to take advantage of AI tools.
Despite these advancements, the potential dangers of AI cannot be ignored. Risks include misuse in creating misleading information as well as privacy concerns arising from the data that AI systems require for training. These concerns stress the need for constant caution and ethical (道德的) considerations to ensure that AI technologies are developed and used responsibly.
As AI continues to develop, its impact is set to redefine what is possible. However, the integration of AI into various industries must be approached with caution, considering the potential dangers alongside the benefits. The future of AI promises to add to processes and inspire new methodologies as long as we find proper approaches to avoid its risks in advance.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
When finishing grocery shopping, it was time for Matt to make his first meal.
