Wearing sports clothes, many Chinese people will go outdoors happily with their families or friends on March 12. They are just planting trees on this special day—China’s Arbor Day (中国植树节).
When it comes to China’s Arbor Day, we can’t help thinking of Mr. Ling Daoyang. After graduating in 1914, he returned to China and became a famous expert in forestry science. In 1915, he advised that the Qingming Festival should also be China’s Arbor Day. His suggestion was welcomed by most people. In 1929, National Arbor Day was moved to March 12, the day Mr. Sun Yat-sen passed away, who did much to support forestry.

We all need Vitamin (维生素) D because it helps to build and keep strong bones. A lack of it can lead to some bone diseases. As studies show, sunlight is great for making Vitamin D. When you’re outdoors, your body will create the Vitamin D you need from direct sunlight on your skin.
In order to get enough Vitamin D, you should get 10-30 minutes of sunlight at a time, several times a week. However, people with darker skin may need a little more time than this. Besides, your exposure (暴露) time in the sunlight should rely on how sensitive your skin is to sunlight. Too much sunlight can be dangerous, for it may cause some bad results, including sunburn, eye damage, and skin problems. If you have to stay in the sunlight for a long time, you should be careful not to let sunlight hurt your skin, so take care to protect your skin with sunscreen before it starts to turn red.
In a word, your ability to make Vitamin D from sunlight depends on the time of day, your skin color, where you live and so on. Keep those in mind when you go out for Vitamin D from sunlight.
8. Why do people need Vitamin D according to Paragraph 1?
A. To keep their hair healthy. B. To make their teeth white.
C. To make their faces pretty. D. To keep their bones strong.
9. We can infer that our body creates Vitamin D by _______________.
A. doing some exercise B. losing much weight
C. staying in the sunlight D. walking in the moonlight
10. What is the bad result if you stay in the sunlight too long?

C. Heart diseases. D. Breath problems.
11. What does the underlined word “sunscreen” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.防晒 B.防水服 C.防尘罩 D.防腐剂

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Seeing what Mother was doing, I thought that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
My mother was a kind person, who always showed her love on me in action. However, as a little girl, I only wanted heart—to—heart talks between mother and daughter. But such talks never happened. I was sad about it and often rude to her, eager to start a new life somewhere else.
When I had my own family, I came to understand mother’s love. So I wrote to mother and asked if she’d forgiven my rudeness. Then, I posted the letter and waited for her answer, but it never came. I felt disappointed and slowly didn’t care too much about it.
Years later, during mother’s final illness, she left some things for my sister and brother. “But the desk.” she said in a weak voice, “is specially for Elizabeth.” When I cleaned the desk—her present for me, I found a one-page letter inside, folded many times. It was the letter that I wrote years ago.
Then, tears came down, “Oh, dear mom, you’ve chosen the silent act to show you did forgive me and always be proud of my writing. Thank you for your silent love. I love you forever!”
12. According to the author, the most wonderful thing in the world must be the act of _______________.
A. reading. B. cooking. C. writing. D. dancing.
13. What kind of communication did the little girl want?
A. Arm-in-arm walks with her mother. B. Face-to-face talks with her mother.
C. Hand-in-hand walks with her mother. D. Heart-to-heart talks with her mother.
14. Who did the mother leave the desk for?
A. Elizabeth. B. Elizabeth’s son.
C. Elizabeth’s sister. D. Elizabeth’s brother.
15. How did the mother show her love on her kids?
A. In words. B. In action. C. By music. D. By painting.

How to Study Smarter, Not Harder
Here are some of our favorite study tips that will help any student study smarter, not harder:
Recite As You Study
Reciting—saying things out loud should first take place as you read through each paragraph or section. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.
Take Fuller Notes
Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.
Study the Middle
The best time to review is soon after you’ve learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.
Sleep On It
Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It’s easier to remember material you’ve just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you’ve fallen asleep.
Combine Memory and Understanding
There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables(乘法表), telephone numbers. and math formulas(公式) are better learned by memorizing(记忆). Ideas are best learned by understanding.
The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again.
1. When taking notes, you should ________ to better help you with reading.
A underline important notes B write notes in your own words
C take down every detail D write as quickly as possible
2. The writer advises you to ________ as it is easier for you to remember material.
A study after a period of activity B.do some exercise after studying
C study as soon as you get up D study before going to sleep
3. Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?
A Thinking about an idea in different ways.
B Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know.
C Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.
D Going back to what first made you confused and start again.
B
When I was fifteen, I announced to my English class that I was going to write and illustrate my own books. Half the students sneered. The rest nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. “Don’t be silly, only geniuses can become writers,” the English teacher said, “And you are getting a D this semester.” I was so humiliated(羞辱) that I cried.
That night I wrote a short sad poem about broken dreams and mailed it to the Capri’s Weekly newspaper. To my astonishment, they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. I showed it to my teacher and fellow students. They laughed. “Just plain dumb luck, "the teacher said. I tasted success. I’d sold the first thing I’d ever written. That was more than any of them had done and if it was just dumb luck, that was fine with me.
During the next two years I sold dozens of poems, letters, jokes and recipes. By the time I graduated from high school, with a C minus average, I had scrapbooks filled with my published work. I never mentioned my writing to my teachers, friends or my family again. They were dream killers and if people must choose between their friends and their dreams, they must always choose their dreams.
I had four children at the time, and the oldest was only four. While the children slept, I typed on my ancient typewriter. I wrote what I felt. It took nine months, just like a baby.
A month later Crying Wind, the title of my book, became a best seller, was translated into fifteen languages and Braille and sold worldwide. I appeared on TV talk shows. I traveled from New York to California and Canada on promotional tours. My first book also became required reading in native American schools in Canada.
People ask what college I attended, what degrees I had and what qualifications I have to be a writer. The answer is: “None.” I just write. I’m not a genius. I’m not gifted and I don’t write right. To all those who dream of writing, I’m shouting at you: “Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Don’t listen to them.” I don’t write right but I’ve beaten the odds. Writing is easy, it’s fun and anyone can do it. Of course, a little dumb luck doesn’t hurt.
4. Why did many students laugh after hearing what the writer said?
A Because they didn’t like him.
B Because they wished he could be successful as a writer.
C Because their teacher laughed, too.
D Because they felt it impossible for him to succeed.
5. Which of the following stopped him telling others about his writing?
A The characters in his story. B His teacher.
C His early experience. D His parents.
6. What can we infer from the passage?
A It is difficult for a person, who cares about what others say, to succeed.
B It is important for a person to tell others what he wants to do.
C It is necessary for a person, who wants to succeed, to take others’ advice.
D It is impossible for an ordinary person to be a writer in the future.
7. Which of the following is the best title?
A A Famous Person B I Hate My Classmates and Teachers
C I Never Write Right D A Genius Can Be a Writer

A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eye. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after work so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally forgot about it.
Later the boy lost his way on the street. When the son was found missing, the mother hurried to look for him, but she didn’t find him. The mother felt very sad and didn’t know how to face her husband.
When the father went to the police station after hearing that the son was missing, he looked at his wife and said just four words. What do you think the four words were? The husband just said "I love you, darling."
The son was missing. If he had picked him up earlier, this would not have happened. There is no point in blaming (责备) anyone. His wife had also lost her only child. What his wife needed at that moment was comfort and understanding from her husband. That is what the husband gave his wife. Several weeks later, with the help of the police, the couple finally found their lost son. The family’s relationship became stronger over that time.
Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your unwillingness to forgive, selfishness, and fears and you will find the world is much more wonderful.

Dear Mike,

Don’t feel bad because of your weight problem. In my heart, health is more important than look. Only with good health can we enjoy life to the fullest. If you want to lose weight and keep healthy at the same time, I have some suggestions for you.
To begin with, having a balanced diet will give you enough energy during the day. It’s of great benefit to your health. And going on a diet blindly is harmful to your health. Besides, regular exercise is a good way to keep healthy and slim. Make a plan and stick to carry it out everyday, and you’ll find it easy to lose weight. Finally, ignore those who laugh at you. Instead, make friends with someone who really cares about you.
Yours,
Li Hua
