Those with a high school diploma. D. Those in postsecondary institutions. B In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift . On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I put the spent film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it would come out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing. As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change. I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me. The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I've taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight. 4. What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy? A. Inspiring and practical. B. Tiring yet delightful. C. Exciting and worthwhile. D. Difficult yet engaging. 5. Why did the author stop taking photos according to paragraph 2? A. He wanted to focus on his work. B. He was struck by sudden sorrow. C. He attempted to behave like an adult. D. He was faced with increasing pressure. 6. What did the author get from picking up his hobby? A. More fun in the daily routine. B. New journeys in the wild. C. Better skills of observation. D. Different styles of photography. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. Revisiting Lost Childhood Memories B. Appreciating Beauty Behind the Lens C. Escaping Teenage Sadness with Camera D. Regaining Pleasure Through Photography C A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks. “It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just a bunch of individual components (零件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. “The added difficulty with such a project is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to make them all on our own,” he said. They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, and then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured. Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.” 8. What challenge did the engineers have when making the robotic fly? A. They don’t have enough related knowledge. B. They lack of ready-made components. C. The system is too complex to work. D. They fail to control all the components. 9. What does the success of the robotic fly prove? A. Scientists are capable of making tiny flying machines. B. Humans will create a new kind of species for the nature. C. The flight device will not need so many components. D. It will help to kill dangerous insects in the nature. 10. What does Wood hope to do with the flying device? A. To fix the system on other animals. B. To put it to the market for money. C. To solve more scientific problems. D. To encourage people to learn biology. 11. How does Wood feel about the application of the robotic fly? A. Worried B. Curious. C. Suspicious. D. Confident. D A dropped bag of chips disturbed a cave ecosystem in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. This cave is almost cut off from the outside world, so introducing anything foreign can be harmful. “Things in the damp cave get wet quickly,” says park guide Ashley. The snack attracts tiny organisms, causing unwanted growth. Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution. Rangers found the bag within hours. “But that can be all it takes,” says Ashley. “I’m sure some crickets got a bit of the snack.” Over 500 million people visit American public lands each year, creating many chances to harm wild places. “When you look at the numbers, it’s incredible,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado, an organization aimed at minimizing human impact on nature. Food waste takes a long time to break down, especially in certain areas. “It takes much longer for an apple core to rot in a desert than in a forest,” says Blye, a teacher at the University of Utah. Leaving waste introduces animals to an unnatural diet and alters their behavior with sometimes disastrous results. Bears who taste garbage and become a threat to humans may have to be put down. “Bears can get used to unnatural food in three weeks,” says Watts. “Everyone loses in this case.” Biological waste is also problematic. Dog waste brings new bacteria into the ecosystem and scares away deer. Meanwhile, human waste and toilet paper introduces dangerous bacteria into water sources. In national parks, trails (小路) are designed to avoid sensitive areas. Stepping off the trail, even for a quick photo, can scare wildlife away. Impacts from many visitors result in long-term damage to nature and wildlife. But people don’t think of that when they see the perfect photo opportunity. “It’s just such a hard thing to resist,” says Blye. The risk to sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious. “It’s easy to think, oh, there’s wildflowers over there. I shouldn’t step on that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including reducing the risk of erosion (侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to its original state. 12. What does Ashley mean by “But that can be all it takes.”? A. The rangers’ work is efficient. B. The damage has been done. C. The cleanup takes a long time. D. The pollution has spread widely. 13. What is a result of foreign waste in public lands? A. A shift in animal behavior. B. A shortage of food supplies. C. A decline in bacterial species. D. An increase in regional conflicts. 14. Why does the writer mention wildflowers in paragraph 5? A. To praise their benefits to desert life. B. To highlight our damage to ecosystems. C. To stress their significance for photography. D. To show our unawareness of nature’s sensitivity. 15. What is conveyed in this passage? A We should encourage wildlife protection. B. We should leave no trace in the wild. C. We should promote national park tourism. D. We should restore ecological damage. How to charge an electric vehicle (EV) is one of the biggest concerns people have when working out whether going electric is right for them. It is true that sometimes gaining access to reliable charging can seem a bit tricky. ____16____ First, download an app with a comprehensive map of the public charging points showing their locations, how powerful they are, and whether they’re working. All this is vital information because, even if you have public charging points nearby, you will need alternatives in case they’re in use.____17____ A growing number of property owners are renting out their charging points and drive ways to other local EV drivers when they’re not using them.____18____ Thus, your car gets charged, the owners make money, and emissions are reduced. ____19____ For example, when your car is running out of juice, you’d just pull up to a battery-change station from your car brand and sit in the car while a fully charged unit is changed in. The Chinese EV brand Nio does this, but isn’t available in the UK as yet. For now, if charging access remains difficult for you, it’s still possible to go electric—in part.____20____ Many hybrid (混合) cars are now good for 50 miles of electric running before you need to use the engine. So, if most of your driving is local, you might only need to find a charger once or twice a week, while you have the backup of a fuel engine for long journeys. A. But it may be easier than you think. B. It actually worked out much cheaper. C. There are also other innovative ways to get your EV going. D. A plug-in EV combines a petrol engine with a smaller battery. E. A “fast” charger usually takes eight hours to fully charge an EV. F. So you need to get a good feel for where your nearest points are. G. You can find a map of homeowners whose charging points are available. Terry, the star of the wrestling world, was born in 1953 in Georgia. 4 What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy? A. Inspiring and practical. B. Tiring yet delightful. C. Exciting and worthwhile. D. Difficult yet engaging. 5. Why did the author stop taking photos according to paragraph 2? 根据第二段中的“The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. 根据文章第三段中的“Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me. 和第四段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight. 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight. D。 C A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. A. Worried B. Curious. C. Suspicious. D. Confident. B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第二段中的“The added difficulty with such a project is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to make them all on our own, (这个项目额外的困难在于,实际上这些零件没有一件是现成的,所以我们必须自己全部制作)”可知,工程师们研发机械苍蝇时面临的挑战是没有现成的零件可用,需要自行制作。 根据第三段中的“Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured. 故选A项。 根据第四段中的“You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead, (你可以开始考虑用它们来解决尚未解决的科学问题,比如用这种难以通过动物实现的方式来研究生物学,而是用这些机器人来替代)”可知,伍德希望利用这种飞行设备解决更多的科学问题。 根据第四段中的“Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. D To show our unawareness of nature’s sensitivity. 15. What is conveyed in this passage? A. We should encourage wildlife protection. B. We should leave no trace in the wild. C. We should promote national park tourism. D. We should restore ecological damage. 12. B 13. A 14. D 15. I shouldn’t step on that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits including reducing the risk of erosion (侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to its original state.(敏感生态系统面临的危险并不明显。 根据第二段中的““When you look at the numbers, it’s incredible,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado, an organization aimed at minimizing human impact on nature.(“当你看到这些数字时,这是令人难以置信的,”瓦茨说,他是科罗拉多州“不留痕迹中心”的负责人,该组织旨在最大限度地减少人类对自然的影响)”以及全文围绕人类丢弃垃圾、偏离步道等行为对生态系统的破坏展开可知,文章传达的核心是我们在野外活动时应做到不留痕迹,减少对自然的影响。 How to charge an electric vehicle (EV) is one of the biggest concerns people have when working out whether going electric is right for them. 16. A 17. F 18. G 19. C 20. Uniquely 37. where 38. referring 39. muddy 40. is committed##commits 41. or 42. to emerge 43. extension 44. by 45. planted 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 故填 where。 故填is committed或者commits。 故填or。 此处是固定搭配:magnate to do sth. 故填by。 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: In order to raise students’ awareness of healthy lifestyles, our school held a series of activities themed “Scientific Weight Management” last week. She had spent weeks creating a beautiful painting of a forest at sunset. The colors were vivid, and every detail was carefully crafted (绘制). She was sure her painting would stand out. On the day of the exhibition setup, Emma carried her painting carefully to the school gymnasium. As she was walking in, she accidentally ran into another student, Jack. He was also bringing his art piece, a large ceramic sculpture. The collision (意外相撞) was so sudden that Emma’s painting tube slipped from her hand and fell to the ground. To her horror, the corner of the painting was scratched, and a small tear appeared. Emma’s eyes filled with tears. “Oh no My painting What am I going to do?” she cried. Jack looked extremely guilty. “I’m so sorry, Emma. I didn’t mean to. It was an accident,” he said. The other students around them stopped and stared, not knowing what to do. Emma knew that the exhibition was starting soon, and there was no time to go home and get another painting. She felt like all her hard work had been ruined. Just then, Mrs. Smith, the art teacher, walked over and saw what had happened. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With everyone’s help, Emma’s painting was transformed into something even more special. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Just then, Mrs. Smith, the art teacher, walked over and saw what had happened. Quickly coming to Emma’s side, Mrs. Smith gently patted her shoulder. “Don’t worry, Emma. Accidents happen. Let’s see what we can do.” Mrs. Smith carefully examined the damaged painting and said, “I think we can fix this. There are some art supplies in the studio. Jack, why don’t you come with us? You can help make up for this.” Jack nodded eagerly, still looking guilty. In the studio, Mrs. Smith found some paints and brushes that matched Emma’s colors. She suggested that they could turn the mark into a small path in the forest and the tear into a flying butterfly. With everyone’s help, Emma’s painting was transformed into something even more special. The other students gathered around, offering ideas. Some added tiny shiny bits to make it special, and others helped mix the paints. Emma, with a newfound determination, started to repaint. As she worked, she realized that the accident had actually opened up new creative possibilities. When the painting was finally finished, it looked amazing. The added elements made the forest scene more lively and full of charm. At the exhibition, Emma’s painting attracted a lot of attention. People praised not only its beauty but also the story behind it. Emma was grateful to everyone. She learned that sometimes, with a little help and a positive attitude, setbacks can turn into something wonderful. 词汇激活 行为类 ①帮助:help /assist ②检查:examine /inspect ③重绘:repaint /redraw 情绪类 ①积极的:positive/active ②感激的:grateful /thankful 【点睛】[高分句型 1] She learned that sometimes, with a little help and a positive attitude, setbacks can turn into something wonderful.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) [高分句型 2] When the painting was finally finished, it looked amazing.
