Four Beautiful Trips of Bikes and Trains
Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Path (小径)
The path is an 87-mile pathway from Cleveland to Bolivar in Northeast Ohio. The Cuyahoga Valley. Scenic Railroad (CVSR) goes along with the path from Akron to Thornburg Station, a 31-mile distance through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The path surrounds the outline of old Ohio and Erie Canal. Today, the path passes many landmarks, bridges, museums, and villages.
Danube Cycle Path
The Danube Cycle Path is a path that follows the Danube River for about 745 miles, from Donaueschingen, Germany to Budapest, Hungary. The path is most popular in Austria featuring 245 scenic miles serviced by local and long-distance trains. Most cyclists choose to ride from west to east with the flow of the river, to take advantage of the natural slope (斜坡) of bicycle traffic(交通).
Lehigh Gorge Rail Path
The path runs for 25 miles through woodlands next to the Lehigh River. A historic tourist railway called the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway follows the path, allowing cyclists to create a one-way ride rather than backtracking. The rail path is mostly flat (平坦的) and passes through Lehigh Gorge State Park. While the train operates most days, the bike service is only offered one weekend a month from May to November.
Cinder Track
The Cinder Track is a 21-mile broken stone pathway along the coast of Yorkshire, England. The towns of Scarborough and Whitby, where the path begins and ends, both have train stations near the path. The train journey is not a direct way between the two towns-in fact, the tracks of the old direct way were removed to create the path. The path, meanwhile, surrounds the Yorkshire coast, providing views of seaside bluffs (峭壁), fishing villages, etc.
21. What can be learned about Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Path?
A. It offers a view of old Ohio and Erie Canal. B. It offers a chance to explore some mountains.
C. It passes a variety of small cities and villages. D. It shares the same path with CVSR all the way.
22. What's the disadvantage of Lehigh Gorge Rail Path for cycling lovers?
A. It has broken stone tracks. B. It has many tough roads.
C. It has sharp slopes on the way. D. It has a time rule on bike service.

On Thanksgiving midday, we were four hours away from our home, tired from a busy week spent traveling, and at that point without a single Thanksgiving preparation complete. By seven o’clock that night, our house was bright with chatter and laughter and the rich smell of bacon, onion and thyme, with a spread of food so delicious that even remembering it now is making my mouth water.
My friends, Elena, Bethany, who were all serving in Chile (智利), and I bought all the things we need and took turns cooking our favorite Thanksgiving dishes. We searched everywhere for pumpkin (南瓜) pie filling but couldn’t find any — so we had a celebration without pies.
The house was filled with the feel of Thanksgiving: children running around playing with toys, people in and out of the kitchen. We filled the table with green beans with bacon, salad with goat cheese, corn and butter, roasted carrots, sweet potato etc. Our local Chilean guests arrived with the turkey, which they had prepared by following a Thanksgiving cooking show. To our excitement, our Chilean Dutch and Swedish guests arrived with a pumpkin pie as their contribution.
Before dinner, each person started with two kernels of corn (玉米粒) on his or her plate. While holding one, we gave thanks for something that happened within the last year. With the other, we expressed a desire for the coming year. Adults and youth shared their best wishes, for the birth of their healthy child, a school year of academic and athletic achievements, and for the difficult things too, a year of lessons learned and opportunities to grow in faith.
During dinner, I was impressed that the guests tried everything. That night, we weren’t just eating food — we were sharing stories, thanks, and a little piece of home in a foreign land. It wasn’t perfect, but it was unforgettable.
24. Why did the author and his friends fail to make pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving?
A. Pumpkin pie filling was unavailable in Chile. B. Pumpkin pies are difficult for them to make.
C. They forgot to buy what was necessary for it. D. They preferred to make some other desserts.
25. What can we infer about the Chilean guests?
A. They had never celebrated Thanksgiving before. B. They were familiar with Thanksgiving traditions.
C. They only ate traditional Chilean dishes that day. D. They did not like the food that foreigners made.
26. The word “academic” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. educational B. social C. practical D. musical
27. How did the author feel about the Thanksgiving celebration?
A. Disappointing. B. Perfect. C. Joyful. D. Awkward.
A 25. B 26. A 27. C

Have you wondered how your body knows when to wake up or why you need to go to the toilet less at night? Circadian rhythms use the sun to help your body to run on time.
“Circadian rhythms” is another name for body clocks. They are controlled by a small part of the brain called the hypothalamus (下丘脑) and they let the body know when to do things like eat, sleep and go to the toilet. Circadian rhythms repeat every 24 hours and almost every living thing has them. They tell animals the best time to hunt, for example, and plants when to flower. Circadian rhythms are influenced by light. When the sun shines through the window in the morning your body clock tells you it’s time to wake up. When it’s dark your body feels sleepy.
Good-quality sleep lets your brain recharge and replace important hormones (荷尔蒙) to keep you healthy. Not listening to your body clock, such as going to bed late, can mess with your sleep cycle and make you feel tired and easy to get angry the next day. Circadian rhythms also affect energy, digestion (消化) and body temperature. In fact, scientists have found that they help our whole body run smoothly. Swathi Yadlapalli is a scientist who studies how people grow and develop. She says, “Almost every part in the human body has a circadian clock.”
Circadian rhythms are written into people’s genes (基因) which are the body's instructions for how to develop and grow. We can’t change them but we can listen to what they are telling us. The Sleep Charity, which helps people to sleep better, recommends sticking to regular sleep patterns. So whether you are used to staying up late, or getting up early, try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. It also suggests getting lots of natural light in the morning. Even if the sky is cloudy and grey, the natural light can reset your body clock and make you feel more awake.
28. Which part of the brain controls circadian rhythms?
A. The hormone system. B. The hypothalamus. C. The digestive system. D. The gene center.
29. What is the function of circadian rhythms?
A. They help plants get sunlight more easily.
B. They regulate the hypothalamus to work faster.
C. They control the movement of main parts in the body.
D. They tell living things when to perform certain activities.
30. What can be inferred about natural light?
A. It makes people feel sleepy at night.
B. It has no effect on hormone production.
C. It sometimes influences circadian rhythms greatly.
D. It helps reset the body clock even on cloudy days.
31. What does the author suggest doing?
A. Stopping staying up too late. B. Getting up early the next day.
C. Having a fixed sleep routine daily. D. Listening to music before sleeping.
B 29. D 30. D 31. C
根据第二段中的“They are controlled by a small part of the brain called the hypothalamus and they let the body when to do things like eat, sleep and go to the toilet.(它们由大脑中一个名为下丘脑的小部分控制,让身体知道何时该进行进食、睡觉、上厕所等活动)”可知,控制昼夜节律的是大脑中的下丘脑。
根据第二段中的“They tell animals the best time to hunt, for example, and plants when to flower.(例如,它们会告诉动物最佳的捕猎时间,告诉植物何时开花)”可知,昼夜节律的作用是告知生物何时进行特定活动。
根据第四段中的“Even if the sky is cloudy and grey, the natural light can reset your body clock and make you feel more awake.(即使天空阴沉多云,自然光也能重置你的生物钟,让你感觉更清醒)”可知,即使在阴天,自然光依然能发挥重置生物钟的作用,由此可推断自然光有时对昼夜节律影响很大。
根据第四段中的“The Sleep Charity, which helps people to sleep better, recommends sticking to regular sleep patterns. So whether you are used to staying up late, or getting up early, try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day.(致力于帮助人们改善睡眠的睡眠慈善机构建议保持规律的睡眠模式。所以无论你习惯熬夜还是早起,都尝试每天在同一时间睡觉和起床吧)”可知,作者建议人们养成每天固定的睡眠习惯。故选C项。

My studies once showed that students perform better when they take notes by hand than when they use laptops. Before I knew it, those studies were used as good reasons for laptop bans (禁止) in classrooms in the U.S. I received a lot of emails blaming (责备) me for such ideas. The fact is that I don’t actually support laptop bans, and never have. In fact, I don’t even ban laptops in my own classes.
In the research, we asked students to watch TED Talks and had them take notes either on laptops or with a pen and paper. Students using laptops recorded the talks nearly with every word, while students who took handwritten notes could not; they just took notes in their own words. Writing by hand required students to understand and summarize the talk. And deeper processing (加工) of the information led to improved learning. As a result, students in this case get higher points on tests.
My findings came out. Teachers around the country soon started banning laptops in their classes. But they didn’t know what actually made learning difficult was the mindless recording of a lecture. Laptops just allowed students to take notes more quickly.
Like most technology, laptops are not universally helpful or harmful in class. Whether they are helpful or harmful depends on the aim. The value of a laptop in the classroom depends on the goal of a lesson plan, the nature of the text, the kind of students being taught, etc.
So can laptops be used in the classroom? If a lesson requires exact quotes, then laptops are excellent. But if the goal is conceptual (概念的) understanding, they will produce the exactly opposite results. Don’t forget the situation when deciding whether or not to allow laptops in your class. All in all, the answer to the question is that it depends.
32. Why did the author receive many blaming emails?
A. He banned laptops in classes. B. His studies supported laptop bans.
C. His research results let people down. D. Schools used his studies to ban laptops.
33. What was the key difference between laptop notes and handwritten notes in the research?
A. Laptop notes were much more detailed.
B. Handwritten notes bettered thinking ability.
C. Handwritten notes recorded every word in need.
D. Laptop notes were written in students’ own words.
34. What did the author think made learning difficult in the case of laptop use?
A. The technology of laptops itself. B. Students’ improper use of laptops.
C. The speed of taking notes with laptops. D. The design of lesson plans for laptop users.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Handwritten notes are better for students’ learning than laptop notes.
B. Laptop bans in classrooms are unreasonable and should be prohibited.
C. The use of laptops in classrooms should be decided based on situations.
D. Research on note-taking methods helps improve teaching achievements.
D 33. B 34. B 35. C
根据第一段“Before I knew it, those studies were used as good reasons for laptop bans (禁止) in classrooms in the U.S. I received a lot of emails blaming (责备) me for such ideas. (我还没反应过来,这些研究就被用作美国课堂禁止使用笔记本电脑的充分理由。我收到了很多邮件,都因为这些想法而责备我)”可知,作者收到很多责备邮件是因为学校用他的研究来禁止笔记本电脑。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Students using laptops recorded the talks nearly with every word, while students who took handwritten notes could not; they just took notes in their own words. Writing by hand required students to understand and summarize the talk. And deeper processing (加工) of the information led to improved learning. (使用笔记本电脑的学生几乎逐字记录了演讲内容,而手写笔记的学生则无法做到;他们只是用自己的话做笔记。手写要求学生理解并总结演讲内容,而对信息的更深层次加工则有助于提升学习效果)”可知,研究中笔记本电脑记笔记和手写记笔记的关键区别是手写笔记能提升思考能力,因为需要理解和总结。故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“But they didn’t know what actually made learning difficult was the mindless recording of a lecture. Laptops just allowed students to take notes more quickly. (但他们不知道,真正导致学习困难的是对讲座内容的盲目记录,笔记本电脑只是让学生记笔记的速度更快了而已)”可知,作者认为是学生对笔记本电脑的不当使用(盲目记录)导致学习困难。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Don’t forget the situation when deciding whether or not to allow laptops in your class. All in all, the answer to the question is that it depends. (在决定是否允许学生在课堂上使用笔记本电脑时,不要忽视具体场景。总而言之,这个问题的答案是“视情况而定”)”可知,文章主要观点是课堂上使用笔记本电脑应根据情况决定。故选C。

Years ago I was travelling in Asia. In those days it was difficult to get from one place to another. ____36____. Then one day, I met a German cyclist, and it only took a few minutes to realise that he understood the best way to get around.
Bikes are best!
“____37____,” he said. “Now imagine you're inside a car or a bus, away from your surroundings. You might think that you can appreciate it, but it’s nothing like riding a bicycle, which enables you to appreciate the sight, and you're part of it,” he added.
Be prepared!
Having now made a number of journeys by bicycle, I know preparation is what you need to do before setting off. ____38____. I prefer touring bikes. These are bikes that are built to carry your luggage and are comfortable for riding long distances. They also have wider tyres (轮胎), which are less likely to get broken. Take a tent (帐篷) and water and food so that you can camp anywhere if necessary. Then you are ready to go!
____39____!
The secret is to take things easy. The whole point is to have fun and relax. If you come to a hill, get off and push your bicycle, and rest as often as you need to. The distance you travel each day depends on different situations, like how fit you are and how hilly it is. ____40____.
I recently saw an article about a German cyclist who left home as a teenager and has never returned. He has ridden over half a million kms and visited 192 countries!
A. Don’t go too fast
B. Your bicycle is the first consideration
C. Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells all the way
D. Imagine the most beautiful sight you’ve ever seen

由上文“In those days it was difficult to get from one place to another.(那时候,从一个地方到另一个地方很困难。)” G项“You could only use the bus which stopped at every village and even in between.(你只能乘坐那种每个村庄都停、甚至在村庄之间也停的公交车。)”符合语境,“could only use the bus”呼应上文“difficult to get from one place to another”,“stopped at every village and even in between”解释了公交车出行的不便,为下文“遇见德国骑行者,发现自行车是最佳出行方式”做铺垫,其中it指代“travel in Asia”,承上启下。故选G项。
由下文“Now imagine you're inside a car or a bus, away from your surroundings.(现在想象一下,你坐在汽车或公交车里,与周围环境隔绝。)” D项“Imagine the most beautiful sight you’ve ever seen.(想象一下你见过的最美丽的风景。)”符合语境,“Imagine”与下文“Now imagine”形成衔接,“the most beautiful sight”为下文“骑行时能融入风景”的观点做铺垫,其中it隐含指代“riding a bicycle”能欣赏到的风景,逻辑连贯。故选D项。
由上文“Having now made a number of journeys by bicycle, I know preparation is what you need to do before setting off.(现在我已经骑自行车旅行过很多次了,我知道出发前需要做好准备。)”和下文“I prefer touring bikes. These are bikes that are built to carry your luggage and are comfortable for riding long distances.(我更喜欢旅行自行车。这种自行车是为携带行李设计的,长途骑行也很舒适。)”可知,空格处需说明“准备工作的核心 —— 选择合适的自行车”。B项“Your bicycle is the first consideration.(你的自行车是首要考虑的因素。)”符合语境,“the first consideration”呼应上文“preparation”,衔接下文对“旅行自行车”的具体介绍,其中it指代“bicycle journey”,衔接自然。故选B项。
由下文“The secret is to take things easy. The whole point is to have fun and relax. If you come to a hill, get off and push your bicycle, and rest as often as you need to.(秘诀是放松心态。旅行的核心就是享受乐趣、放松自己。如果遇到山坡,就下来推着自行车走,需要休息时就多休息。)”可知,本段围绕“骑行时不要急于求成,要放慢节奏”展开,空格处需作为主题句点明核心。A项“Don’t go too fast (不要骑得太快)”符合语境,“Don’t go too fast”直接呼应下文“take things easy”和“rest as often as you need to”,其中it指代“bicycle tour”,准确引领段落内容。故选A项。
由上文“The distance you travel each day depends on different situations, like how fit you are and how hilly it is.(你每天骑行的距离取决于不同的情况,比如你的身体状况和地形坡度。)” F项“However, you should soon be able to average 100 kilometres a day (不过,你很快就能达到平均每天100公里的骑行距离)”符合语境,“However”转折承接上文“距离因人而异”,给出具体的平均距离参考,既不绝对又有指导性,其中it隐含指代“daily riding distance”,逻辑清晰。

故填was inspired。
故填who/that。

此处是“make it + 不定式”结构,其中“it”是形式宾语,用来替代后面较长的真正宾语(两个并列的不定式短语“to see firsthand the impact... and to share the experiences...”),避免句子结构头重脚轻,该结构中可省略宾语补足语,直接用“make it to do sth.” 故填to see。
share sth. with sb. 故填with。
故填the。

Our family spent the past week in the sun, building sandcastles, and laughing as waves crashed at our feet — our beach vacation felt like a perfect escape from daily stress. On the drive back, we chatted excitedly about looking through the photos we'd taken and the things my parents and I collected. We even made plans to enjoy the fresh seafood we'd bought at the market, never guessing what waited for us at home.
Returning from the beach vacation, to our surprise, we discovered our neighborhood rocked by flash flooding (洪灾) from a storm. Our basement (地下室) was flooded under five feet of water, filled with wet furniture while neighbors lost cars and entire homes. As we started the heartbreaking cleanup, my father said, “Those belongings are just ‘things’ — lose them, and you'll forget about it as time goes on.”
What I remember best was the powerful response of our neighbors. Neighbors, including some teenagers, my friend Lily, my cousin Tom, and Mr Smith’s son Jason…arrived immediately with tools like gloves, shovels, and buckets, staying all day until our underground room was cleared. Everyone stopped to lend a hand, refusing to let anyone face the mess alone. A local electrician (电工) gave up his day off, working tirelessly for six hours to restore power to our home. Local businesses quietly left cleaning supplies on doorsteps, and everyone offered help. To keep everyone connected, phone-charging stations appeared around the neighborhood. Support was far beyond the immediate cleanup. Neighbors placed drinks, and sandwiches on sidewalks for anyone in need. Friends sent heartfelt letters, practical gift cards, and offered hotel stays. A local cafe even brought over free sandwiches and hot coffee, making sure no one went hungry during the work.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Small acts of the teenagers shone brightly.

After a tiring cleanup weekend, all the people gathered in the library parking lot.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Small acts of the teenagers shone brightly. My friend Lily organized a team to carefully clean and dry our family photo albums, preserving precious memories that water could have destroyed forever. Meanwhile, my cousin Tom and Jason took charge of distributing supplies, running tirelessly between houses to ensure every family received enough water and tools. Seeing their determination, other young neighbors joined in — some comforting upset children with funny stories, others creating a “lost and found” board for recovered items. Their energy and creativity brought light to our darkest moment.
After a tiring cleanup weekend, all the people gathered in the library parking lot. Standing beside recovered belongings, my father expressed our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who had helped us. “These past days have shown us that our community is more than just houses — it’s a family,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. As the sun set, neighbors hugged and shared stories of the recovery, no longer as separate families but as one united community that had discovered its strength through hardship.

B. Perfect. C. Joyful. D. Awkward.

Circadian rhythms are written into people’s genes (基因), which are the body's instructions for how to develop and grow.
D
C His research results let people down.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Small acts of the teenagers shone brightly.
