It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time right now. I’m so sorry. I’d like to give you something.” I handed her the small card from my purse. When the woman read the two words “You Matter” on the card, she began to cry. And crying bitterly, she said, “You have no idea how much this means to me.” I was a little startled by her words. Having never done anything like this before, I didn’t know what kind of reaction (反应) I might receive. All I could think to say was, “Would it be OK to give you a hug?” A few days earlier, one of my neighbors gave a similar card to me as encouragement for a car accident I experienced. When I read the card, I felt a feeling of pleasure spread inside of me. Deeply touched, I ordered my own box of “You Matter” cards and started sharing them. 41. What can we know about the cashier and the woman? A. They are familiar with each other. B. The cashier always helps the woman. C. They live in the same community. D. The woman turns to the cashier for help. 42. What was the woman’s trouble? A. She lost her job. B. She needed food donation. C. She didn’t know how to get through the hard time. D. She didn’t have enough money to pay for her goods. 43. How did the author help the woman? A. She inspired the woman with a card. B. She bought some food for the woman. C. She gave the woman a handful of money. D. She offered the woman’s husband a better job. 44. What does the underlined word “startled” most probably mean? A. Moved. B. Surprised. C. Pleased. D. Annoyed. 45. Which could be the best title for the text? A. You Decide Who You Are B. Bad Things Will Go Away C. The Help from a Stranger D. The Power of a Small Card 【答案】41. A 42. C 43. A 44. B 45. 根据第一段“When it was her turn to pay, the cashier (收银员) greeted her by name and asked her how she was doing. 故选A项。 根据第二段“The woman looked anxious, shook her head and said, “Not so good. My husband just lost his job. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to get through these days.” 根据第六段“I handed her the small card from my purse. When the woman read the two words “You Matter” on the card, she began to cry. 故选A项。 根据划线词所在句“I was a little startled by her words. 以及后文“Having never done anything like this before, I didn’t know what kind of reaction (反应) I might receive. 根据全文内容,特别是最后一段“A few days earlier, one of my neighbors gave a similar card to me as encouragement for a car accident I experienced. When I read the card, I felt a feeling of pleasure spread inside of me. Deeply touched, I ordered my own box of “You Matter” cards and started sharing them. 因此,D选项“The Power of a Small Card (一张小卡片的力量)”最符合文章主旨,适合作标题。故选D项。 C Monarch butterflies have amazed the world with their annual migration south from the United States and Canada to California and Mexico. But habitat loss endangers the future of not just the butterflies, but other pollinators (传花粉者) necessary for the nation’s ecosystems. “We have to do something now, before it’s too late,” said Ethan Walsh, a senior philosophy student at California State University, Northridge. Ethan and his mother, Christina Walsh are working closely with the Chumash tribe (部落) to restore (恢复) and improve habitats for monarch butterflies and other pollinators. They are planting milkweed and other pollinator-friendly plants at three sites on 210 acres of the Chumash ancestral lands. As a result, about 140 acres of habitat have been improved. “Creating space for pollinators on ancestral land helps meet the migratory needs of the monarch butterflies and habitat needs of other native pollinators,” Ethan said. The restoration efforts center around native milkweed, the only plant monarch butterflies will eat. Native milkweed has been rapidly disappearing for a number of reasons. Ethan and his mother have spent years collecting the seeds (种子) of milkweed plants native to the area. The Walshes have collected 2 pounds of native milkweed seeds so far, and they aim to collect 7 pounds in total. They are planting these seeds along with other pollinator-friendly plants: The goal is to make sure there is enough milkweed for monarch butterflies to eat on their journey. The project also includes setting up a teaching and demonstration site at the Chumash information center, so visitors can learn about habitat restoration efforts and perhaps learn some lessons and apply them in their own communities. “We don’t want what we are doing to be kept a secret,” Ethan said. “We and the Chumash tribal leaders want to share so that others can learn from what we’re doing.” 46. What is one problem for monarch butterflies? A. Habitats are getting smaller. B. Air pollution is getting worse. C. Temperatures are getting higher. D. Competition among butterflies is increasing. 47. What other plants are included in the Walshes’ planting efforts besides native milkweed seeds? A. Native trees. B. Plants that are good for pollinators. C. Edible flowers. D. Plants that provide shade for birds. 48. What do the numbers in paragraph 3 mean? A. The Walshes need to find new partners. B. The Walshes’ work has had some success. C. The Chumash tribe’s lands are being gradually destroyed. D. The Chumash tribe has a long history of raising monarch butterflies. 49. Why do the Walshes try to grow native milkweed? A. To study the reasons for the migration of monarch butterflies. B. To change the eating habits of monarch butterflies. C. To help monarch butterflies shorten their journey. D. To provide enough food for monarch butterflies. 50. What can the teaching and demonstration site do? A. It can teach people how to migrate properly. B. It can help change people’s view of monarch butterflies. C. It can provide a window into the Chumash tribe’s culture. D. It can provide others with a practical example of habitat restoration. 46. A 47. B 48. B 49. D 50. Researchers found that people in the study believed that a friend who used AI to write them a message didn’t put in as much effort as a friend who wrote a message themselves. That may be understandable, but the effect goes beyond the message itself, said Bingjie Liu, lead author of the study. “After they get an AI message, our participants (参与者) feel less satisfied with their relationship with their friend and feel more uncertain about where they stand,” Liu said. But to be fair to AI, it wasn’t just the use of technology that turned people off. “People want their partners or friends to make an effort to come up with their own message without help — from AI or other people,” Liu said. “People want to know how much you want to invest (投入) in your friendship and if they feel you are cutting corners by using AI to help, that’s not good,” Liu explained. Of course, most people won’t tell a friend that they used AI to help write a message, Liu said. But she noted that as ChatGPT becomes more popular, people may start doing a Turing Test in their minds as they read messages from friends and others. “Turing Test” is sometimes used to refer to people wondering if they can tell whether an action was taken by a computer or a person. “It could be that people will secretly do this Turing Test in their minds, trying to figure out if messages have some AI component (成分),” Liu said. “It may hurt relationships.” The answer is to do your own work in relationships, she said. “Don’t use technology just because it is convenient. Sincerity (真诚) still matters a lot in relationships”. 51. How did people in the study feel about receiving an AI message from their friend? A. Thankful. B. Dissatisfied. C. Surprised. D. Embarrassed. 52. Why do people prefer that friends write messages themselves instead of using AI? A. AI messages often have many mistakes. B. People believe AI lacks emotional depth. C. People want to see the effort invested in the friendship. D. Friends who use AI are considered dishonest. 53. What do the underlined words “cutting corners” mean in paragraph 4? A. Dealing with the hardest challenge first. B. Receiving some professional advice. C. Doing something in the easiest way. D. Avoiding personal arguments. 54. Why might people start a Turing Test according to Liu? A. To judge the level of ChatGPT. B. To learn how to communicate with AI. C. To test the sincerity of an online friend. D. To see if AI has been used in a message. 55. What is Liu’s suggestion? A. Being actively honest in relationships. B. Paying attention to real world friends. C. Believing in the development of technology. D. Thinking twice before making a convenient choice. B 52. C 53. C 54. D 55. 根据第二段““After they get an AI message, our participants (参与者) feel less satisfied with their relationship with their friend and feel more uncertain about where they stand,” Liu said.(刘说:“在收到人工智能信息后,我们的参与者对他们与朋友的关系感到不太满意,对自己的立场感到更不确定。”)” 根据第二段“Researchers found that people in the study believed that a friend who used AI to write them a message didn’t put in as much effort as a friend who wrote a message themselves.(研究人员发现,研究中的人们认为,使用人工智能给他们写信息的朋友没有自己写信息的朋友付出那么多的努力)”以及第四段“People want to know how much you want to invest (投入) in your friendship(人们想知道你想在你们的友谊中投入多少)”可知,人们更喜欢朋友自己写信息,而不是使用人工智能,因为人们希望看到在友谊中付出的努力。 根据第二段“Researchers found that people in the study believed that a friend who used AI to write them a message didn’t put in as much effort as a friend who wrote a message themselves.(研究人员发现,研究中的人们认为,使用人工智能给他们写信息的朋友没有自己写信息的朋友付出那么多的努力)”以及划线词后文“by using AI to help”可知,人们希望看到朋友付出努力,而不是使用人工智能来省事,即用最简单的方法做某事,故划线词意思是“用最简单的方法做某事”。 根据倒数第二段““Turing Test” is sometimes used to refer to people wondering if they can tell whether an action was taken by a computer or a person.(“图灵测试”有时指的是人们想知道他们是否能分辨出一个动作是由计算机还是人执行的)”可知,人们进行图灵测试是为了查看信息中是否使用了人工智能。 故选A。 The year I entered my teens, I expressed to my parents my wish to play the piano. Thinking the piano accordion (键盘式手风琴) a reasonable instrument, my parents asked me to attend lessons offered on weekends. After several weeks, my instructor told Mom that I had a knack for music and could be a musician. As a result, for Christmas I received a full- sized Mundinger accordion. Then, in 1983, I decided to return to full-time studies. Needing money to support my education, I placed an ad and found a buyer for my accordion. Over the years, I felt a feeling of shame sometimes about that Mundinger my father had paid for by working so hard as a miner. I would recall (回想起) how much happiness my practicing and playing had given him. By 2013, Dad was in a nursing home. In those situations when an accordion player would be brought in to cheer up the people there, I would see his eyes light up. I began to consider the possibility of being able to bring that happiness to him myself whenever I visited, and I asked my son, Sam, to find me a small accordion. Weeks later, I took the bus to Thompson Pawnbrokers where Sam told me to check out their accordions. When I noted that there were only two full-sized accordions, I asked to check out more in the back of the store, explaining that I wanted something smaller. It was when the clerk placed the instrument on the counter that I realized that the accordion I was looking at was not LIKE the instrument I used to have, it was THE instrument I used to have! Before Dad passed away the following month, I brought the instrument to the nursing home. Before I told Dad how I had come to own it once again, I asked, “Do you know what that is, Papa?” Although he had dementia (痴呆), he answered, “Of course, Lenny! It’s your accordion.” 56. B I was standing in the checkout line (收银台) behind a woman who looked to be in her 50s. When it was her turn to pay, the cashier (收银员) greeted her by name and asked her how she was doing. The woman looked anxious, shook her head and said, “Not so good. My husband just lost his job. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to get through these days.” Then she gave the cashier coins. My heart ached. I wanted to help but didn’t know how. Should I offer to pay for her food, or ask for her husband’s information? Walking into the parking lot, I saw the woman again. I remembered something in my purse that I thought could help her. It wasn’t a fortune or an offer of a job for her husband, but maybe it would make her life better. “Excuse me,” I said, my voice shaking. “I couldn’t help overhearing what you said to the cashier. 41. The Power of a Small Card C Monarch butterflies have amazed the world with their annual migration south from the United States and Canada to California and Mexico. B. D Using AI to help write a message to a friend is not a good idea — at least if your friend finds out about the use of AI, a new study suggests. The year I entered my teens, I expressed to my parents my wish to play the piano.
