Located in the southernmost part of the canton of Bern to the west of Switzerland’s centre, the Bernese Oberland is defined by its mountains. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, these areas offer plenty of well-kept and clearly signposted hiking routes that are accessible to travellers all year.
1. The Gasternal
Best for: waterfalls and glacier-carved valleys
Distance: 5.5 miles
Difficulty: Easy
This gentle trail — snaking through the glacier-dotted Gasternal Valley — leads walkers along the banks of the Kander river, beside the gushing Chlose gorge and past surging waterfalls. Spectacular views aside, the route is well marked and easy enough for almost every age group.
2. The ViaAlpina from Adelboden to Lenk
Best for: peaceful forest paths and rolling alpine moorland
Distance: 8.7 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
The hike from Adelboden to Lenk initially involves trekking through a peaceful, forest-lined path along the Glisbach stream and Allebach River. From there, the views open up across rolling green alpine moorland and the Hahnenmoos Pass in the Bernese Alps.
3. Gemmi Pass
Best for: clear Alpine lakes
Distance: 13 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
The highlight of this historic hike is the Arvenseeli, several deep blue lakes fed by melting snow from the surrounding pine forest. These lakes shrink and even disappear for a short time during the summer as the mountain streams dry up, so time your trip carefully.
4. The W19 from Schonried to Sparenmoos
Best for: magnificent mountain scenery
Distance: 10 miles
Difficulty: Difficult
The uphill hike from Schonried to the Rellerligrat viewpoint may be challenging, but it rewards hikers with incredible 360-degree views of the mountainous Saanenland region. From there, the route continues on to the Sparenmoos — a high plateau in the Gstaad region known for its serene rolling hills and all-round views.
21. Which one is suitable for all age groups?
A. The Gasternal. B. The ViaAlpina from Adelboden to Lenk.
C. Gemmi Pass. D. The W19 from Schonried to Sparenmoos.
22. What is special about The W19 route?
A. The route is only proper for hikers with rich experience.
B. The route offers beautiful all-round views of mountains.
C. Your trip must be arranged carefully to enjoy its highlight.
D. There is snow melting from the surrounding forests.
23. What do Route 2 and 3 have in common?
A. You can enjoy beautiful lake views. B. You can experience a peaceful forest hiking.
C. Both routes have the moderate difficulty. D. Both routes are not suitable to take in summer.

It is all too common for some nonprofit to jump into countries to “fix” problems and then leave. When 25-year-old Maggie Ground started her nonprofit, she wanted to do the opposite.
Grout came up with the idea for Thinking Huts in 2015, when she was a teenager. The organization is a nonprofit dedicated to building schools in communities that need them. In 2022, Thinking Huts built its first 3D-printed school in Fianarantsoa, a city in Madagascar, an island country lying off the southeastern coast of Africa. Now it’s preparing to uncover its second 3D-printed campus, nicknamed “Honeycomb”, on the west coast of the African island.
The campuses are made up of several huts and use a honeycomb (蜂巢) design with solar panels; they also have drinkable water, Wi-Fi, and toilets. While the first campus is in a city area of Madagascar, the new campus will be in a more remote location, serving three villages in the southwestern region of the African island, where more than 200 students aged 4 to 16 live.
Grout has a degree in international development and is considering launching Thinking Huts in a number of different countries. She settled on Madagascar because it has both a struggling education system and a government that welcomes outsiders. According to the United Nations, by 2022, about three out of four secondary-age children there were not attending school.
Grout says that from the start, she wanted to employ local construction teams, and Thinking Huts buys all the doors and windows locally in order to honor traditional building methods. In addition to building Honey-comb, Thinking Huts is also working to establish 3D-technician programs for native teams with on-site training to create more local jobs.
“Thinking Huts aims to ‘bridge the divide between poverty and opportunity’ through education”, Grout says. “I think that education is at the foot of solving all the other problems in the world.”
24. Why is Maggie special compared with some nonprofits?
A She wanted to fix all problems in less developed countries.
B. She wanted to stay so as to fix problems in the long term.
C. She wanted to start her own nonprofit to oppose some nonprofits.
D. She wanted to leave even if she hadn’t helped fix local problems.
25. What do we know about the “Honeycomb” campus?
A. It was designed like a honeycomb with several huts.
B. It was 3D-printed and has all functions of a honeycomb.
C. The “Honeycomb” campus has many honeycombs in the campus.
D. Maggie intentionally designed the campus in a honeycomb pattern.
26 Why did Maggie settle on Madagascar?
A. Because Madagascar is an African country with poor environment.
B. Because its residents welcome outsiders from the western world.
C. Because it has a struggling education system with open environment.
D. Because three out of four children were not willing to attend school.
27. What can we conclude from the last two paragraphs?
A. Thinking Huts has solved the problems in the education system.
B. Thinking Huts wanted to build the school with the modern techniques.
C. Grout believes Thinking Huts should solve all other problems in the world.
D. Grout tried to bring more benefits to local people through Thinking Huts.
C
Every Wednesday, retiree Zhang Zhili travels an hour by bus to an education center. There, she plays the African drum in a classroom filled with other retirees who move their hands with the music, and every beat lifts her spirits. Zhang, 71, has found joy and new friends at the “elderly university” in Beijing. Besides African drums, the former primary school teacher joins social dance classes.
Many older Chinese are looking beyond traditional nursing homes. That’s driving an increase in universities, home care services, and communities catering to older adults. China has a rapidly aging population. By 2023, about 297 million people were aged 60 or above, over one fifth of the population. By 2035, this number is expected to exceed 400 million, or over 30% of all Chinese. That’s driving growth in services and products aimed at older adults in what Beijing calls the silver economy, which is expected to increase from about 7 trillion yuan currently to around 30 trillion yuan in 2035, raising its share in the economy from about 6% to about 10%.
Du Peng, dean of the School of Population and Health at Renmin University of China, said the government is expanding basic care services to all older people who need them, moving beyond its traditional focus on those without family support. Officials have drawn up a list of basic care services they aim to offer nationwide, including providing ability assessments for those over 65 and care training subsidies (补贴) from family members of disabled individuals.
Filial piety (孝顺) runs deep in China and most older people prefer aging at home with family after they retire. In January, 2024, Beijing issued new guidelines calling for expanding home care services and meal deliveries, and more clothing, food and tech products tailored for older adults. They also include enriching older people’s lives through education.
28. Why does the article mention retiree Zhang Zhili in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of the article. B. To praise the silver economy in China.
C. To show how serious the aging problem is. D. To show how happy old people are now.
29. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A. Aging population has brought heavy burden to economy.
B. Silver economy will have a promising future in China.
C. The share of silver economy will decline in the future.
D. Aging population will have less influence on Chinese economy.
30. What did Du Peng suggest in his words?
A. It is traditional for Chinese people to take care of old people.
B. Officials should step into the life of local old people.
C. New guidelines should be made to develop economy in China.
D. The government is taking effective measures aimed at old people.
31. Which might be the best title of the text?
A. China is Confronting with Increasingly Serious Aging Problem
B. China’s Aging Population Drives the Silver Economy
C. Filial Piety still Runs Deep in Chinese Families and Communities
D. Aging Population in China has Brought Huge Impact on Economy
D
What happens when a livestreaming session is hosted by a digital human who can interact with viewers in real time? Last month, I watched a livestreaming show hosted by the virtual avatar (化身) of Luo Yonghao, founder of smartphone maker Smartisan Technology and a key online opinion leader on Chinese social media platforms.
Throughout the live broadcast lasting over six hours, Luo’s digital human along with a cohosting avatar harvested more than 13 million views, generating over 55 million yuan ($7.7 million) in gross merchandise value, or GMV. In key product categories such as consumer electronics and food, order volumes surpassed Luo’s real-person livestream debut (首次亮相) on the same platform earlier in May.
What impressed me the most was that Luo’s digital avatar and the supporting avatar interacted naturally, exhibiting detailed gestures — such as making eye contact and speaking in unison — that mirrored real human hosts, while engaging with viewers in real time.
Powered by Chinese tech heavy weight Baidu Inc’s Ernie foundation model, the livestreaming was the first to feature dual (双的) digital avatars as cohosts. Baidu described the new generation of AI digital human as super-intelligent AI agents that closely resemble real people, with coordinated expressions, speech, gestures and behavior. These digital humans are capable of thinking, making decisions and collaborating to complete specific tasks.
AI-powered digital human hosts that bear a close resemblance to real humans in appearance as well as behavior are being increasingly employed in livestreaming e-commerce to display a variety of products and bolster sales.
I noticed that several brands preferred to use virtual anchors to attract digitally savvy (精明) and novelty-seeking young consumers, as they cost less than employing real human hosts and don’t cause celebrity scandals that could potentially hurt brand image.
A digital human of Liu Qiangdong Chinese e-commerce giant JD’s founder and chairman, appeared in the company’s livestreaming rooms in last April to promote a variety of products.
32. How do you find the use of the virtual avatar of Luo Yonghao?
A. Unchanged. B. Very successful. C. Critical. D. Rigid.
33. What does the underlined phrase in the third paragraph mean?
A. Awkwardly. B. Relatively. C. Cooperatively. D. Accidentally.
34. What might be the future of the AI-powered human hosts?
A. It may have a bright future in e-commerce. B. It can only used in commercial sales.
C. It will have a bad impact on children. D. It is sure to cause negative social problems.
35. Why did some brands prefer to use virtual hosts?
A. Because they are more intelligent than real ones.
B. Because they can attract more viewers in livestreaming rooms.
C. Because they will never hurt the company’s brand image.
D. Because they behave well, cost less and are attractive to the young.

One day in early December, we woke up to discover a perfect, freshly fallen snow. “Please Mom, can we go sledding after breakfast?” my eleven-year-old daughter Erica begged. Who could resist? So we bundled up and headed over to the dike on the Lincoln Park golf course, the only hill in our otherwise flat prairie town.
When we arrived, the hill was teeming with people. We found an open spot next to a tall, thin man and his five-year-old son. The boy was already lying belly-down in the sled, waiting to be launched. “Come on, Daddy! Come on!” he called. The man looked over at me. “Okay if we go first?” he asked.
“By all means,” I said. “Looks like your son is ready to go.”
With that, he gave the boy a huge push, and off he flew! But it wasn’t only the child who soared — the father ran after him at full speed.
“He must be afraid that his son is going to run into some body,” I said to Erica. “We’d better be careful, too.”
With that, we launched our own sled and whizzed down the hill at breakneck speed, the snow flying in our faces. We had to jump away to avoid hitting a huge elm tree near the river, and ended up on our backs, laughing.
“Great ride!” I said. “But what a long walk back up!” Erica noted.
Indeed it was. As we struggled our way back to the top, I noted that the lanky man was pulling his son, who was still in the sled, back up to the summit.
Erica asked, “Would you do the same for me?” I was already out of breath. “No way, Kid! Keep walking You have your own legs.”
By the time we reached the top, the little boy was ready to play again. Again, the father put all energy into giving the boy a huge send-off, chased him down the hill, and then pulled both boy and sled back up. This pattern went on for more than an hour. Even with Erica doing her own walking, I was exhausted.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
By then, the crowd on the hill had thinned as people went home for lunch.

B. How long it takes to be fluent in Chinese.
C. What fluency in Chinese really means.
C 18. A 19. C 20. B
W: When I started learning Chinese, I was horrified to hear that it would take me 10 years to become fluent. Another 17 years later I’m still working at it. Due to my work on television, some Chinese language learners may consider me a role model of sorts, but every day I’m reminded of what I don’t know and how much more there is to learn.
Who cares how long it takes? Just do it! If you really want to learn Chinese, you will devote yourself to it however long it takes. Gaining fluency in Chinese is a difficult practice. All manner of things affect how long it will take, from time and dedication, classes you take, to finding a good teacher. Fluency has a different definition in most people’s minds. For the sake of this answer, I am going to consider fluency the ability to read and understand newspapers, as well as engage in complex conversation without looking at the words.

Located in the southernmost part of the canton of Bern, to the west of Switzerland’s centre, the Bernese Oberland is defined by its mountains.

A. She wanted to fix all problems in less developed countries.
26. Why did Maggie settle on Madagascar?

A 29. B 30. D 31. B

A digital human of Liu Qiangdong, Chinese e-commerce giant JD’s founder and chairman, appeared in the company’s livestreaming rooms in last April to promote a variety of products.
B 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据空格前句子“Sometimes when we do not speak up for ourselves, the bullies continue with their behavior thinking of us as an easy target.(有时,当我们不为自己说话时,恶霸继续他们的行为,认为我们是一个容易的目标。)” E项“In this thought, they assume that we will never speak up to them(在这种想法下,他们断定我们永远不会反抗)”与“easy targets”同义衔接。故选E。
根据空格前句子“If you are with your friends, or if you are in the company of someone, it is least likely that the bully will disturb you.(如果你和你的朋友在一起,或者你和别人在一起,恶霸最不可能打扰你。)”和空格后的句子“Sometimes, all it takes is one loyal friend who will stay by you no matter what.(有时候,你所需要的只是一个无论如何都会陪伴在你身边的忠实朋友。)” C项“We are not asking you to make a huge circle of friends(我们并不是要你结交一大群朋友)”填入空格处符合语境。故选C。
根据该部分的小标题“Ignore them.(不理会他们)”和空格后句子“When you do not react to what they say or do no matter how hurtful it may be for you, they start to lose interest in you.(无论他们说什么或做什么对你有多伤害,当你不做出反应时,他们就会开始对你失去兴趣。)” D项“Another effective measure to handle a bully is by neglecting them(应对欺凌者的另一有效措施就是忽视他们)”直接点明“neglecting”,与“do not react”同义。故选D。
根据空格后句子“Some of us are born comedians and we can turn almost anything into a joke. If you are one of these people, try to take advantage of your gift. Turn the situation the bully has created into a joke or just say something funny. This will break the bully’s confidence and they will know that you are strong and sure about who you are. This will make them back-off.(我们中的一些人是天生的喜剧演员,我们几乎可以把任何事情变成笑话。如果你是这些人中的一员,试着利用你的天赋。把恶霸制造的情况变成一个笑话,或者只是说一些有趣的事情。这将打破恶霸的信心,他们会知道你很强大,很确定你是谁。这会让他们退缩。)”可知,本段主张“幽默化解欺凌”。B项“Turn the situation into a joke(把场景变成玩笑)”与后文“say something funny”完全同义。

根据时间状语for millions of years可知,动作从过去持续到现在,应用现在完成时,主语nature为第三人称单数,谓语动词用has carved,故填has carved。
此处作定语从句的先行词,且前面有不定冠词a修饰,需用名词形式,recognize的名词为recognition(不可数名词,但此处特指“被命名为地质公园”这一具体认可,可用不定冠词修饰),故填recognition。

Looking forward to your early reply.
Dear editor,
I am a Senior 3 student. Knowing that English Learning Newspaper is launching an activity to improve our oral English, I strongly recommend holding an English speech contest, which I believe would be very helpful.
First of all, preparing for a speech requires students to write their own drafts, which fosters independent thinking and language organization skills. More importantly, singing focuses on melody and memorization, which does little to develop the ability to organize and express one’s own ideas. Therefore, I am convinced that a speech contest would improve our spoken English more effectively.
I would appreciate it if you could take my suggestion into consideration. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

With that he gave the boy a huge push, and off he flew!
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
By then, the crowd on the hill had thinned as people went home for lunch.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, I could stand it no longer.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
By then, the crowd on the hill had thinned as people went home for lunch. Finally, it got down to the man and his son, Erica and me and a handful of others. He can’t still be thinking the boy is going to crash into someone, I thought. And surely even though the child is small, he could pull his own sled up the hill once in a while. But the man never got tired, and his attitude was bright and cheerful and the boy never climbed up the hill on his own.
Finally, I could stand it no longer. I looked over at him, praising how energetic he was. The man looked at me and smiled. “He has something wrong with his legs,” he said matter-of-factly, “He can’t walk.” I was dumbstruck. Only then did I realize that I had never seen the boy get out of the sled in all the time we’d been on the hill. It had all seemed so happy, so normal, that it never occurred to me that the child might be disabled.

Another seventeen years later, i'm still working at IT due to my work on television. Some chinese language learners may consider me a role model of sorts, but every day i'm reminded of what I don't know and how much more there is to learn. Who cares how long IT takes? Just do IT. If you really want to learn chinese, you will devote yourself to IT. However long IT takes, gaining fluency in chinese is a difficult practice. All manner of things affect how long this will take from time and dedication classes you take to finding a good teacher. Fluency has a different definition in most people's minds. For the sake of this answer, I am going to consider fluency, the ability to read and understand newspapers, as well as engaging complex conversation without looking at the words.
