High-rise building fires are extremely dangerous due to their fast-spreading flames and toxic smoke. It is crucial to master proper escape skills to protect yourself in such emergencies.
The most important rule to remember is: "Run fast in small fires, close doors in big fires." Never risk your life for personal belongings. When a small fire breaks out and doesn’t block the escape route, evacuate immediately. However, if the fire is large and the staircase is filled with thick smoke, it’s safer to stay in your room and wait for rescue.
To judge the escape direction correctly, you should first check for smoke by opening the door slightly. If the fire is upstairs or in your own home and there’s no smoke, run down the stairs quickly—never take the elevator, as it may stop working or become a chimney for smoke. If the fire is on the same floor or downstairs and smoke is detected in the corridor or staircase, close the door tightly, block the cracks with wet cloth, and call 119.
During self-rescue, cover your nose and mouth with a wet towel to avoid inhaling toxic smoke. Wrap your body in a wet quilt and move forward by bending down or crawling, as smoke rises upwards. When waiting for help, choose a room near the main road with an open-able window. You can wave clothes or turn on lights by the window to signal for help.
1. Why are high-rise building fires particularly dangerous?
A. Because they always happen at night B. Because flames spread fast and smoke is toxic
C. Because there are not enough fire exits D. Because firefighters can’t reach high floors
2. What does the underlined word "evacuate" mean in Paragraph 2?
A. To stay in a safe place B. To leave a dangerous place
C. To call for help D. To fight the fire
3. When should you NOT take the elevator during a fire?
A. Only when the elevator is broken B. At all times, because it’s unsafe
C. Only when there’s a lot of smoke D. Only when the fire is on the same floor
4. What is the purpose of bending down or crawling when escaping?
A. To avoid being seen by the fire B. To breathe cleaner air near the floor
C. To find the escape route more easily D. To move more quickly through the smoke
5. Which of the following is the correct way to wait for rescue?
A. Stay in a room without windows
B. Open all doors to let fresh air in
C. Block door cracks with wet cloth and signal by the window
D. Climb onto the roof and wait for a helicopter

In recent years, short-form videos have become popular around the world. Compared with traditional long-form videos, they are more convenient.
However, some Chinese researchers have some worries. They have recently studied how short-form videos reshape our brains and influence our genes (基因). The new study found that watching short-form videos can increase brain activity in regions connected to reward processing and emotion regulation (情绪调节). This may lead to various biological and neurological (神经系统的) problems.
For the study, the researchers selected 111 college students between the ages of 17 and 30 who liked to use social media. Besides, the study focused on the use of short-form video apps rather than general smartphone use. Researchers collected their brain imaging data using MRI scans (磁共振扫描) to see the neurological effects of short-form videos, especially in terms of structural changes and functional activity in the brain.
The results were surprising. Participants who were more addicted to short-form videos showed functional and structural brain differences compared with others. There was an increase in gray matter volume (灰质体积) in the cerebellum and orbitofrontal cortex, which are important to decision-making, information processing, and emotional control. This makes the brain more sensitive to the quick rewards that one gets from watching one video after another, making it harder to stop.
Moreover, the researchers found nearly 500 genes linked to changes in the brain resulting from short-form video addiction. Interestingly, most of these genes are expressed during the teenage years, suggesting that these years are a vulnerable period during which individuals may be more likely to get addicted to short-form videos.
1. What did the research mainly study?
A. Teenage behaviours. B. Brain structure.
C. Influence of short-form videos on our body. D. Short-form videos’ popularity among the young.
2. What does more brain sensitivity lead to?
A. Easier addiction. B. Faster learning.
C. Better decisions. D. Calmer emotions.
3. Why might teenagers be more easily addicted to short-form videos?
A. They use phones more. B. They have more free time.
C. Some genes are more active at their age. D. Brain development is largely complete by their age.
4. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Easily affected. B. Physically weak.
C. Emotionally changeable. D. Highly intelligent.
5. Where is this text probably from?
A. A health magazine. B. A fitness blog.
C. An ad for social media. D. A report on school education.

5.范文如下:
The Danger of Vanity
Mathilde in The Necklace wanted to look rich and borrowed a diamond necklace. She lost it and had to work ten years to pay for a new one. Finally she found the necklace was fake.
This story tells us vanity is dangerous. It makes people do foolish things. As students, we should not care too much about clothes or appearance. I once wanted an expensive schoolbag like my classmates, but my parents told me it's not necessary.
True beauty comes from knowledge and kindness, not from expensive things. We should focus on studying hard and being a good person. That's more important than looking rich.
