Our science class was always full of fun things to do, but this project was different. When I was 13, my science teacher, Mr. Thompson, gave us a ____11____ project. “Watch one tree for a month and write about it,” he said. There were several trees behind our building. I saw its rough bark (树皮) give a home to many insects, and ____19____ squirrels (松鼠) ran around, hiding nuts under the tree.
When spring came, I saw a beautiful sight. New leaves grew on the maple tree and from the acorn I planted. Years later, when I ____20____ the national science competition (比赛), I thought of the tree. It made me realize that true strength lies in rising after every fall, just like the maple tree.

“Fred,” Caroline said. “I need to talk to you. What did you mean when you said: ‘with a little help, Blossom can be sick’?”
Fred told Caroline about Blossom and the sleeping pills.

“Fred!” Caroline cried. “Do you think I want to win like that? Do you really think that?”
“But I only wanted to help you. Look! Everyone is happy. You are, Mum and Dad are, your horse Apple wind is happy too, I think—and Sophie and Blossom will be okay in a few weeks.”
“Fred! Sophie was lucky that she only broke a rib (肋骨). Thank goodness she didn’t break more!!! Thank goodness she’s not dead!!!”
Fred started crying. “I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. I didn’t think...”

A newly discovered asteroid (小行星) has a tiny chance of hitting Earth in 2032, space agency officials have said. Scientists put the odds (可能性) of a strike at a little more than 1%.
“We are not worried at all, because of this 99 percent chance it will miss,” said Paul Chodas, director of NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies. “But it should get attention.”
Last month, a telescope (望远镜) in Chile (智利) found a space rock named 2024 YR4. It is thought to be about 40 to 100 meters in diameter (直径).
Scientists are keeping close watch on the space rock, which is moving away from Earth at the moment. As the asteroid’s path around the sun becomes better understood, Chodas and others said, there’s a good chance the risk to Earth could fall to zero.
The asteroid will slowly fade from view over the next few months, according to NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). Until then, some of the world’s most powerful telescopes will keep watching it to better understand its size and path. Once out of sight, it won’t be seen again until it passes closer to Earth again in 2028.
The asteroid came closest to Earth on Christmas Day—passing within about 800,000 kilometers of Earth, about twice the distance to the moon.
According to the ESA, Earth is hit by an asteroid this size every few thousand years and could cause serious damage. That’s why this one now tops the ESA’s asteroid risk list.
Scientists say it might hit Earth on December 22, 2032, but it’s much too soon to know where it might land if it did hit Earth.
31. What does Paul Chodas mean by saying “We are not worried at all” about the asteroid?
A. The asteroid is too small. B. Chile can watch it closely.
C. It will probably miss Earth. D. They’re sure it won’t hit Earth.
32. What size is probably the space rock?
A. Car-sized. B. Football field-sized.
C. Mountain-sized. D. City-sized.
33. The meaning of the underlined word “fade” is close to ________.
A. disappear B. arrive C. come D. find
34. Why do scientists keep watching the asteroid?
A. To test its equipment. B. To take photos of Earth.
C. To find the moon and stars. D. To study its size and path.
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A Christmas Close Call from Space
B. 1% Chance of Asteroid Hitting Earth in 2032
C. Telescopes Discover a Tiny Asteroid
D. Scientists Watch a Dangerous Space Rock

It is easy for many people to catch a cold in spring or fall. It makes us wonder since scientists can send a man to the moon, why they can’t find a cure for common colds. The answer is easy — there are many different cold viruses. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a cure for each one.
When a virus gets into your body your body works hard to fight against it. Blood rushes to your nose and causes a block in it, so you feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but your body is actually eating the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells (细胞). You may feel very uncomfortable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people do different things to deal with colds. Some people might have chicken soup to help them get over the cold and some take medicine to stop different symptoms (症状) of colds.
There is one interesting thing to note — some scientists say taking medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this: It takes about one week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but it takes only about seven days to get over a cold if you take medicine.

The asteroid came closest to Earth on Christmas Day—passing within about 800000 kilometers of Earth, about twice the distance to the moon.

C. Mountain-sized. D. City-sized.
33. The meaning of the underlined word “fade” is close to ________.

34. Why do scientists keep watching the asteroid?
A. To test its equipment. B. To take photos of Earth.
C. To find the moon and stars. D. To study its size and path.

A. A Christmas Close Call from Space

阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过10词。
It is easy for many people to catch a cold in spring or fall. It makes us wonder since scientists can send a man to the moon, why they can’t find a cure for common colds. The answer is easy — there are many different cold viruses. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a cure for each one.
When a virus gets into your body, your body works hard to fight against it.
