I was cutting up lettuce (生菜) in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about putting the lettuce stub (残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed mug (大杯) and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning, I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here? Lettuce or hope?
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to doubtfully assess where I found myself before being devoted to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in, or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
4. Why did the author put the stub in water?
A. To hope that it would grow. B. To decorate the nice mug.
C. To play a game. D. To remove his bad mood.
5. What is the first sign of life in the author’s eyes?
A. The remaining stub. B. The small leaf.
C. The disappearing cuts. D. The tiny root threads.
6. How would the author feel if in the lettuce’s situation?
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Confident. D. Annoyed.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Enjoy your own life to the fullest B. Believe in yourself when in trouble
C. Never be afraid to restart yourself D. Give freedom to the heart in a way

Coral reefs(珊瑚礁) are a unique ocean ecosystem consisting of rocky structures mainly formed by coral animals and some other ocean life. Despite only covering 0. 2 percent of the ocean floor, coral reefs support at least 25 percent of marine species, as well as providing food and economic security for hundreds of millions of people.
However, coral reefs across the world are under threat. Warmer oceans can cause the coral bleaching(漂白). It happens when the corals lose colored algae(海藻) living in their bodies and turn completely white. Without the algae, the corals lose their main food source and can die. In addition, as oceans become more acidic(酸性的) from absorbing CO₂, corals in acidic conditions become weak in forming reefs.
In 2021, the United Nations reported a 14 percent loss of corals across the world largely from rising sea temperatures in the previous 13 years. Australia declared mass bleaching events in 2022 across large parts of the Great Barrier Reef, four times since 2016. Data from the Philippines showed higher than usual ocean temperatures between 2015 and 2017 had caused a serious three-year bleaching events in reefs across the planet.
Scientists have been cooperating to see how coral reefs can be protected. Thankfully they find those coral reefs in the hot parts of the globe are the worst affected. They contain corals with better heat resistance. So their research focus on finding genes(基因) for heat tolerance so that they can be passed on to future generations. Biologists also mix corals that are more resilient to higher temperatures with those that are not and the resulting generation has a better chance of survival.
Ultimately, scientists add that without a serious decline in greenhouse gas, 99 percent of the world’s coral reefs will be gone by the end of the century. There is a limit to how quickly corals can adapt warm climate, but if temperatures rise rapidly, then extinction is certain.
8. Which is the main threat to coral reefs?
A. Declining ocean acidification. B. Loss of colored algae.
C. Increasing sea temperatures. D. Lack of food source.
9. What do we know from paragraph 3?
A. No actions are taken to protect coral reefs.
B. Coral bleaching is the worst in Australia.
C. Coral reefs have grown rapidly for years.
D. Coral reefs receive impacts globally.
10 What can be the basic way to protect coral reefs?
A. Reducing greenhouse gas emission. B. Transplanting them to the hot parts.
C. Relying on genes science. D. Limiting their spread.

Recently, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu I only wore once from the bottom of the cupboard. I remember buying them simply to match the ancient-style hair accessories (配饰) a friend gave me. It occurred to me that I had been trapped in the “birdcage effect”.
“Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. Weeks ago, I was in the company of friends engaged in shopping. One said that she wanted to buy a good writing pen to match the delicate notebook that her sister gave her, so that she would fall in love with taking notes on reading, and thus love reading, not just reading. I joked that she must have fallen for the “birdcage effect”. But the friend said with a smile: “Why not use the ‘birdcage effect’ instead?”
For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向). However, this can’t help but remind me of middle school, and I seem to have used the “birdcage effect”. Passing by a bookstore one day, I purchased a magazine and saw the call for contributions published in the magazine, so I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing.
After shopping with my friends that time, I began to proceed to use the “birdcage effect”. I bought a small fresh tablecloth to decorate my desk, and a beautiful notebook to record my inspiration. When everything was ready, I started writing again.
But how can we get rid of the “birdcage effect” in many things, and even use the “birdcage effect” in the opposite way? Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can distinguish them. If it is not in line with the actual situation, it is a “negative birdcage”, then we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart of abandonment and separation. If it is a “positive birdcage” that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and motivate ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, you will find that the “birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The application of the “birdcage effect” in life.
B. The necessity of using the “birdcage effect” in life.
C. The turning point of the author’s idea on the “birdcage effect”.
D. The author’s conflict with her friend over the “birdcage effect”.
13. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning her middle school experience?
A. To recall her delightful days at school.
B. To explain the reason for her love with writing.
C. To confirm the positive of the “birdcage effect”.
D. To prove her knowledge of the “birdcage effect”.
14. How can we make use of the “birdcage effect” positively?
A. By realizing this effect has two sides.
B. By promoting our personal consumption.
C. By recognizing this effect is not so terrible.
D. By guiding our acts to go with reasonable goals.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Getting Rid of the Birdcage Effect Confidently
B Motivating Ourselves to Move Towards Our Goals
C. The Birdcage Effect: Influence on Consumer Behavior
D. The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. D

How to Remember What You Read
Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you've read! ___16___You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images(形象)may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.
● ___17___
If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won't be able to remember what you read. It's a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don't understand what you're reading, how would you remember it? But there are a few things you can do... Use a dictionary; look up the difficult words.
● Are you connected?
Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you, and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. ___18___ How willing are you to make the connections happen?
● Read it; hear it; be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some character into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He'd make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character. ___19___
● How often do you read?
If you read frequently, you'll likely have an easier time with remembering what you’re reading and what you've read. ___20___As you make reading a regular part of your life, you'll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You’ll learn to enjoy literature- as you remember what you read!

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mike and his mother, Sheila, had only recently moved to a new home due to Sheila’s job transfer. Mike’s father had died two years before, so Sheila worked hard to provide for herself and Mike.
One day, Mike saw four construction workers when he was on the way home with his mother. The men were repairing a portion of the road near Mike’s house. It was terribly hot, and Mike’s heart went out to the tired workers. That’s when Mike had an idea. He rushed inside, opened the fridge, and grabbed some bottles of lemonade (柠檬水) made by themselves. Then he hurried up to the workers.
“Excuse me, sir,” he said in a loud voice. “You look very tired. Please have the lemonade. You will feel better!” The workers paused from their work and exchanged looks, smiling and delighted that the young boy was so kind to them. “Thank you very much, young man,” one of them replied as he accepted the lemonade. “It’s okay,” Mike said with a smile and then waved goodbye to them.
From that day on, Mike brought lemonade or water to the workers every day. Soon enough, he became familiar with all of them. One day, when Mike went to offer them water, the workers observed he wasn’t as cheerful as before. They were worried and asked him why he seemed upset. Pouting (嘴) his lips, the boy replied, “My birthday is only two days away and my mother will be caught up with some work that day. We are new here, so I don’t have any friends. I will be alone.”
The workers felt bad for Mike, thinking he didn’t deserve to be sad ever — particularly not on his special day-so they came up with a plan.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, the construction workers decided to wait for Sheila on her way to work.

Mike’s birthday came and he was at home alone when suddenly the doorbell rang.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The next day, the construction workers decided to wait for Sheila on her way to work. When they walked to Sheila, she was confused. They explained everything to her, including how Mike would bring them water daily. Sheila was incredibly proud of her son and couldn’t believe he had been so kind to the workers. “Actually, we want to celebrate his birthday with him. We know he really doesn’t want to be left alone on his birthday. We hope you don’t mind,” the workers said. Sheila was more than grateful to them for being so thoughtful and kind to her son and she accepted their plan.
Mike’s birthday came and he was at home alone when suddenly the doorbell rang. Mike wondered who it could be. When he opened the door, he was surprised to find a group of four men — construction workers — in front of him. “We’re here for your birthday, Mike!” When Mike, almost crying about being alone, saw the workers, his face lit up. Surprised and excited, he welcomed them to come in. The construction workers not only bought Mike a birthday cake, but also helped decorate the living room with balloons and a happy birthday banner. In the following time, they enjoyed the celebration to the fullest.

In addition, as oceans become more acidic(酸性) from absorbing CO₂, corals in acidic conditions become weak in forming reefs.
Thankfully, they find those coral reefs in the hot parts of the globe are the worst affected.

B. Motivating Ourselves to Move Towards Our Goals
C. The Birdcage Effect: Influence on Consumer Behavior
D. The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage
