If your parents are too tired to cook after a long day at work, would they like to order takeout or invite an “on-demand chef (上门厨师) ” to your home to prepare the meal?
Among young people in China, on-demand chefs have become a new trend (趋势). People love this service because it offers a healthier choice than takeout.
These “chefs” are often students or office workers working part-time. Ding Yuqing, a 23-year-old college student in Wuhan, Hubei province, is one of them. It began when she posted photos of her dishes online last winter. To her surprise, many people sent her messages asking, “Can you come to cook for me?” Now, Ding offers her service within 10 kilometers of her school. Before each visit, she usually makes a phone call to her customers, knowing about their needs. This helps Ding serve her customers better. Besides, she asks them to prepare the ingredients (食材) according to the food they order. After cooking, she cleans up and takes out the rubbish. For a typical order of three dishes and one soup, she gets paid 80-100 yuan.
The trend is part of China’s “on-demand economy (按需经济)”. It includes many different services, like home care for the elderly. These services have won hearts by meeting people’s different needs while creating lots of part-time jobs. By the end of 2024, there were more than 265 million part-time workers like “on-demand chefs” in China, according to a survey conducted by a company in Hangzhou.
Though the on-demand chef industry (行业) is still new, its healthy development needs clearer laws, better protection for workers, and stronger support from the government, said Hu Junjie, a lawyer in Hubei. Other similar services, like taxi-hailing, are well-managed and can be a good example to follow, Hu added.
1.Are “on-demand chefs” popular in China?
2.How many part-time workers were in China by the end of 2024?
3.What does Ding Yuqing usually do before she cooks for her customers?
4.Would you like to try “on-demand chefs”? Why or why not? (More than 30 words)
【答案】1.Yes, they are. 2.More than 265 million. 3.She usually makes a phone call to her customers, knowing about their needs. 4.Yes, I would like to try “on-demand chefs” because they offer healthier meal options than takeout. ①Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
②In the Warring States Period (战国时期), the ancient people loved sweets and developed ways of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, the technology of sugar making improved. And sugar went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sugar. ③Sugar painting is different from common painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Because syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
④However, it’s a pity that the art of sugar painting is dying recently. In the past, sugar paintings came in different shapes. But now, because fewer people buy them, their styles are becoming simpler and simpler. What’s worse, few people want to pass on (传承) the art except those old sugar painters.
⑤For most people, the art of painting is difficult to understand. However, sugar painting brings the art into people’s daily lives. It shows the spiritual pursuit (精神追求) of the ancient people. Primary and middle schools in many cities have extended (延长) class “breaks” from 10 to 15 minutes. Why did they do this? The schools hope that both students and teachers can spend more time doing outdoor activities during breaks.
Before this change, most students only had 10 minutes between classes. If a class was on the third floor or above, students often found it hard to go outside. Think about it: going down stairs and up again takes a few minutes. By the time they got to the playground, there were only a few minutes left. So many students just stayed in the classroom or walked in the hallway. Now with 15 minutes, they can run to the playground, jump rope, or play games with friends. This change helps students meet the goal of doing at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Most cities in China have all started this 15-minute break.
Most people think having longer class breaks is helpful. “My child comes home happier,” said a parent. “She can play outside and relax her eyes.” Teachers also notice good changes. “Students are more focused (注意力集中) in class after a longer break,” said Mr Li, a maths teacher. “And when they play outdoors together, they learn to work as a team—like in basketball or tag games.” For students, it is good for their health because they can have more time to relax. Both parents and teachers also agree with 15-minute breaks. Longer class breaks can help make students’ social skills better in activities.

2.Why couldn’t students on higher floors do outdoor activities before?

Joking can be a cheerful thing. However, sometimes people may see it differently. Some people may get hurt if there are too many jokes. When you show you can’t accept the jokes, the jokes might get worse.
We should consider the relationships when joking. Close friends usually enjoy teasing (开玩笑). Healthy teasing can usually make people relaxed. Lots of people gathered there to watch too. Slowly, the moon moved in front of the sun. It looked like someone bit a hole in the sun! It got darker and darker as the moon slowly covered the sun.
At 9:26 a.m. the moon completely covered the sun. The sky went dark. The crowd gasped and cheered. The light of the sun made a ring of light around the moon. I took this photograph then. The total eclipse lasted for over five minutes! Then it passed and the sky started to get brighter again.
I was really inspired by the eclipse this morning. In the afternoon, I spent hours reading about astronomers, eclipses, and how the planets move in our solar system. The universe is simply amazing! I also watched some videos with famous Chinese astronauts. I want to become an astronaut or astronomer someday too. The sky is the limit!

Earth’s nearest neighbor—the Moon
The Moon is a satellite (卫星) of our planet Earth, one quarter of its size, and circling us once every 27.3 days. Many planets have smaller bodies moving around them. As the Moon circles our planet, it gets lit up by sunlight. When it is nearer the Sun, most of the side the Sun shines on cannot be seen from Earth, so we see a crescent (新月). When it is far from the Sun, we see the full moon.
No one knows for sure how the Moon was created. The most popular theory says it is the result of a crash (撞击) between a body as big as the planet Mars and the Earth, that happened 4.6 billion years ago, about 30-50 million years after the formation (形成) of the solar system.
The Moon has influenced the Earth and the people that live here for thousands of years.
Although it only produces about 1/6th of the gravity (重力) of Earth, the Moon’s gravity is still strong enough to attract the waters of our seas from around 250,000 miles distance-the Moon is what makes our ocean’s tides (潮汐).
People for thousands of years have formed theories that the Moon has an effect on people and their lives. Cave paintings dating back 15,000 years show primitive (原始的) man understood the Moon’s phases (位相). And Ancient Greeks thought that the Moon could cause madness in persons. Even now the Moon attracts artists, film-makers and musicians, and the Moon features in many films, songs, literature and art-works.
1.When can we see the full moon?
2.What is the most popular theory that the Moon was created?
3.What makes the ocean’s tides?
4.Do you expect to see a crescent? Why can we see a crescent?
【答案】1.When the Moon is far from the Sun. 2.A crash between a Mars-sized body and the Earth. 3.The Moon’s gravity. 4.Yes. Because when the Moon is nearer the Sun, we can only see part of its lit side from Earth.
【导语】本文介绍了月球的基本信息、形成理论、对地球潮汐的影响以及人类对月球的认知和文化影响。
1.根据“When it is far from the Sun, we see the full moon.”可知,当月球远离太阳时,我们看到的是满月。故填When the Moon is far from the Sun.
2.根据“The most popular theory says it is the result of a crash (撞击) between a body as big as the planet Mars and the Earth”可知,最流行的理论认为月球是火星大小的天体与地球碰撞形成的。故填A crash between a Mars-sized body and the Earth.
3.根据“the Moon’s gravity is still strong enough to attract the waters of our seas from around 250,000 miles distance — the Moon is what makes our ocean’s tides (潮汐).”可知,月球引力引发海洋潮汐。故填The Moon’s gravity.
4.根据“When it is nearer the Sun, most of the side the Sun shines on cannot be seen from Earth, so we see a crescent (新月).”可知,新月出现是因为月球靠近太阳时,地球只能看到部分被照亮的月面。故填Yes. Because when the Moon is nearer the Sun, we can only see part of its lit side from Earth.

Then, in the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
And it is an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. So, the art should be remembered, missed and passed on.

The Chinese cheongsam, or qipao, is a popular dress. It first appeared in Shanghai in the early 20th century. It is now a symbol of Chinese culture. Women around the world wear it.
The cheongsam fits the body’s curves (曲线) well. People usually use silk and cotton to make it. It usually has a high collar (领), short sleeves (袖), and a cut on the side of the skirt. This makes it easy to move.
At first, rich women in Shanghai wore the cheongsam to show their social positions and wealth. Soon, it became popular with all women as everyday clothing. During the 1920s and 1930s, the cheongsam changed. It became better and used more fashionable designs. Nowadays, designers are creating new styles to follow modern fashion.

1.What did most students usually do during 10-minute class breaks?
2.Why couldn’t students on higher floors do outdoor activities before?
3.What do many people think of a 15-minute break?
4.Who agrees with 15-minute breaks?
5.Do you like longer class breaks? Why or why not?

Joking can be a cheerful thing. However, sometimes people may see it differently. Some people may get hurt if there are too many jokes. When you show you can’t accept the jokes, the jokes might get worse.
We should consider the relationships when joking. Close friends usually enjoy teasing (开玩笑). Healthy teasing can usually make people relaxed. When both sides know it’s just joking, they can understand each other better. The environment is also important for close relationships. It doesn’t matter when your sister calls your nickname (绰号) at home. However, it’s quite bad when a classmate shouts it out at school.
When making a joke, we often see the funny side of it. But others may see it in a different way. Sometimes we forget the other person may not find it funny. People have different life experiences, so they understand jokes differently. For example, imagine someone not swimming at a pool party. Others might tease him or her about being unable to swim. But maybe that person is just afraid of water. Keep in mind that people may have their own reasons for not seeing the funny side.
It’s a good way to build good friendships by respecting others. In daily life, we should pay attention to our words when playing jokes.

2.How do people usually feel about healthy teasing?
3.What is also important for close relationships?
4.Why do people understand jokes differently?
5.How can we build good relationships?
