Henry: A great way to help you remember something is to imagine a picture of it in your mind. If you make the picture big, strange or silly, you will remember it better. For example, to remember the word “smiles”, we can imagine there is a “mile” between the first letter and the last letter. This makes it the longest word in the world. Remember: a picture is worth a thousand words.
Paula: A good method for remembering the spelling of a word is to make a short sentence with each letter of the word. For example, if you want to remember how to spell the word “because”, you can use the sentence “Big elephants can always understand small elephants”.
Millie: You will forget something very quickly unless you understand it well. For example, you may have trouble remembering the list of steps in the water cycle. However, it is easier to remember these steps if you understand how the water cycle works.

If you’ve ever found yourself forgetting where you left your keys or forgetting information on important tests, you’ve probably wondered how to improve memory. There are a lot of things for you to do to improve your memory.
Focus your attention
Attention is one of the most important parts of memory. In order to move information from your short-term memory into your long-term memory, you need to actively attend to the information. Try to study in a place without television, music, and games. Remember, set aside a period of time to be alone. Ask your roommates to give you some space so you can focus on your work.
Remember important information
Have you ever noticed how it is sometimes easier to remember the information at the beginning or the end of a passage? Researchers have found that the order of information can play a role in recalling (回忆起) things. But recalling the middle information can be difficult. You can solve this problem by spending more time remembering this information.
Read out loud
Researchers have found that reading materials (材料) out loud can improve your memory for the materials. Students can use this way to remember words, sentences and passages. When using this way, you’d better ask others around you for permission or do together.
Get a good sleep
Researchers have long known that sleep is important for memory and learning. Research has shown that taking a short rest after you learn something new can actually help you learn faster and remember better. So the next time you want to learn new information, consider getting a good sleep after your study.
1.Why does the writer say “Ask your roommates to give you some space so you can focus on your work.” in Paragraph 2?
A.Because roommates can help to work. B.Because you must finish the work on time.
C.Because more space can offer chances. D.Because the quiet place is good for work.
2.If you read a book with five parts, which part is the most difficult for you to recall?
A.The first part. B.The third part. C.The first two parts. D.The fifth part.

Many people have forgetfulness (健忘). And, yes, I was one of those forgetful people before. So I’ve had to develop some kinds of ways to improve my memory.
How do you know you are forgetful?
You may have forgetfulness in these cases—when people ask whether you’ve found the answers they wanted, but you can’t remember them; if you often have trouble remembering where your keys are, or where you have parked your car in the parking lot; if you miss meetings; or if you can never remember a person’s name even a few seconds after being introduced.
The following are some of my tips for helping you.
Can’t find your keys? Right now get a small box and set it on a table in your kitchen. When you come back home, always put your keys in this box. The key to remembering where your keys are is to always put them back in the same place at once every time you come back home.
Can’t find your car in the parking lot? I kept running into this problem until one day I solved (解决) it quite easily. Now I always park in the first or second row (排) to the left of the entrance (入口). That way, when I come out, I naturally start walking toward where my car is parked because it has become a habit.
1.In which of the following situations, you are not forgetful?
A.When you often forget where you have parked your car.
B.When you often forget where your car key is.
C.When you often miss appointments(约会).
D.When you can remember something easily.
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.If you lose your keys, you must have forgetfulness.
B.The writer gave us four ways to solve forgetfulness.
C.The writer used to have a better habit of remembering things.
D.The writer has a better memory than before.
3.What does the underlined word “key” mean?
A.The middle part. B.Direction.
C.The thing to open a door with. D.The most important thing.
4.Where does the writer often park now?
A.In the first or second row to the left of the entrance.
B.In the last row to the left of the entrance.
C.In the first or second row to the right of the entrance.
D.In the last row to the right of the entrance.
5.What is this passage mainly about?
A.Memory. B.Forgetfulness.
C.Car keys. D.A parking lot.
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.D 4.A 5.B
【导语】本文主要讲述了健忘的症状和应对方法。
1.细节理解题。根据“if you often have trouble remembering where your keys are, or where you have parked your car in the parking lot; if you miss meetings; or if you can never remember a person’s name even a few seconds after being introduced”(如果你经常记不清钥匙在哪里,或者你把车停在停车场的什么地方;如果你错过了会议;或者你在被介绍后几秒钟都记不住一个人的名字。)可知ABC的情况都是属于健忘的,D选项“当你能很容易地记住某事时。”不属于健忘,故选D。
2.细节理解题。根据“Many people have forgetfulness (健忘). And, yes, I was one of those forgetful people before. So I’ve had to develop some kinds of ways to improve my memory.”以及后文可知作者的记忆力比以前好多了,故选D。
3.词义猜测题。根据“When you come back home, always put your keys in this box. The key to remembering where your keys are is to always put them back in the same place at once every time you come back home.”(当你回家时,总是把钥匙放在这个盒子里。记住钥匙在哪里的关键是每次回家时都要把钥匙放回原处。)可知此处的key是指最重要的事情,故选D。

Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short term and long term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized(有条理的). When you put away a book—or memory—you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

A.长的学期 B.长期的 C.长的术语 D.长的条款
3.The long-term memory ________.
A.lasts for only a few seconds
B.is like a very big lake with lots of fishes
C.is like a very big library with many, many books
D.is bad for students’ study
4.According to the passage, you can memorize vocabulary by ________.
A.reading as often as possible
B.writing emails to the people you know
C.taking many photos about them
D.making pictures in your mind with the words
5.This passage mainly tells us about ________.
A.how to improve ways to remember words
B.language students’ problems in study
C.short term and long term memory
D.how to make the meaning of words stronger

Traveling is an exciting experience. It makes us feel pleased, and enjoy new wonders and new part of life that we’ve never known. A single holiday trip can give you the freedom and the chance to make changes that daily life does not allow. It matters little where you go on your holiday; it is all in what you make of it. Any travel can be interesting and attractive, and give you memories to last a lifetime.
Having those memories is truly what travels are all about. Many people say that a bit of planning and research before you leave can make sure of those long-lasting memories. But why not try something unexpected? In fact, the most unforgettable moments of a travel experience are the ones that you don’t plan for. Yes, maybe you’ll experience a bad meal in an unfamiliar place. But these experiences will make sure you discover little-known shops or an open-air theater production that is only advertised in the local paper.
You’ll find the enjoyable moments happening all around you; a wonderful sunset or a small child playing in the puddles(水洼) of a cobble(鹅卵石) road. The magic will truly be in the trip you take. Take time to go for a long walk for enjoyment when visiting a new place, which will allow you to listen, smell, and see the different culture and sights that your busy life may stop you from enjoying.
Simple things such as a leaf from a tree you sat under can keep the memories of your travel alive for years to come. Collect small things such as leaves, stones, or feathers, which can be turned into memorable works of art when you get back home.
1.What can give you the freedom and the chance to make changes that daily life does not allow?
A.A long holiday trip. B.A single holiday ticket.

A.Drive your car all the way. B.Stay in the car all the way.
C.Take a long walk to enjoy yourself. D.Don’t forget your work while having a travel.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.How to have a travel? B.How to plan your travel?

A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from
As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes(后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it?
If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.
If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday.
If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
1.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The situation. B.The crime scene.
C.A new and difficult word. D.Everything that is known.
2.If Jim and Lily go to the movies, which one below is “alternating paying”?
A.They each pay half. B.Jim pays every time.
C.They take turns to pay. D.Their parents pay for them.
3.How does the author explain his ideas about root words?
A.By giving a fact. B.By taking an example.
C.By telling a story. D.By having a discussion.
4.“Sen” from the Latin word means “old”. Which word uses this Latin root?
A.My brother is my senior by two years. B.He was ill so he was absent from school.
C.A criminal was sentenced to death by law. D.60 students were present at the sports meeting.
5.What should you do if you want to use your “rooting for words” skills well?
A.You should use your dictionary first. B.You should practice and work hard.
C.You should work as a detective. D.You should make more examples.
【答案】1.C 2.C 3.B 4.A 5.B

The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can, hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don’t forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don’t usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.
◆ Try to use new information immediately. For example, if you meet someone who says “Hi! I’m Carlos,” don’t just say “Hello.” Repeat the person’s name. Say “________”.
◆ Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it’s hard to memorize (记忆) 109244153. But if you break it into three parts—109/244/153—it becomes easier.
◆ Write out what you need to remember over and over again. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas (公式) or facts.
◆ Always review information. If you bring what you’ve learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.
◆ Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what’s right and what’s wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.
◆ Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory.
And everyone’s memory gets better if they use it often enough. All of the suggestions are helpful. If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.
1.How many suggestions are mentioned in the passage?
A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.
2.Which should be put in the blank (空格) in Paragraph 2?
A.Hello, Carlos. B.How do you do?
C.Hello, I’am Sophia. D.Glad to meet you!
3.What can help memorize a big number more easily according to the passage?
A.To store it in a computer. B.To break it into smaller parts.
C.To discuss it with a friend. D.To review it before you sleep.
4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Discussing with friends can help you remember things.
B.Always reviewing information can help you fall asleep.
C.Formulas and facts can help you learn about your brain.
D.Human beings can improve their memory by computer.

Everyone gets embarrassed (窘迫的) in their life. You’ve probably even been embarrassed many times today. It could have been the time when you spoke a simple word wrong in class, or tried to take a picture of someone secretly while the flash (闪光灯) was on. Though embarrassing moments like these don’t harm us a lot, they come back from time to time and make us feel upset. Even if the terrible memory may seem to be unnoticed after some time, we would always remember the feeling of strong embarrassment. In fact, these feelings may last for years. When they return, they are known as a cringe attack (羞愧综合征).
I myself get a quite uncomfortable feeling when I think back on a party my parents took me to when I was little. I ate a bowl of strawberries by myself. My parents shouted at me in front of everyone-for being impolite. From then on every time I put a strawberry into my mouth, my brain just throws that embarrassing memory back.
Why do these cringe attacks still appear in our daily lives even though the actual events happened weeks, months, or even years ago? Actually, our brains give special attention to the feelings that can be easily noticed. The stronger the feeling is, the longer the memory will be. If you have a highly embarrassing or highly emotional (情绪激动的) moment, no matter what it is, your brain will try to catch it.
So how can we deal with this? Well, we can start by trying to be more objective (客观的) about our past selves. Consider that you are not alone-everyone fails or makes silly mistakes. Instead of just trying to forget what we did, we should try to accept who we were at that moment and think about how we can change for the better.

March 21 is the World Sleep Day. Studies show that a good night’s rest helps us stay healthy, both mentally ( 精神地) and physically. Sleep is probably the best tool we have for memory (记忆力) and learning. A good night’s sleep helps us to learn better.
But what about getting rest during the middle of the day? Short periods (一段时间) of sleep after a mid-day meal, we call it napping (午睡), may help our brains work better.
Past studies show that napping can help babies and young children learn better. And napping can help with brain performance in older adults (成年人). Taking a nap may also help this group of people fight off age-related memory loss. As we all know, the older we are, the more memory we will lose.
The study found that people who took an hour-long nap did much better on mental tests than those who did not nap. The hour-long nappers also did better on the tests than those who napped for shorter and longer periods. In this study, it seems that the most effective (有效的) nap lasted for bout an hour, but not much longer. Keep in mind, however, that these are the findings for those over the age of 65.
And there is a little difference between the old and young people. Doctor Michael Twery notes that an hour-long nap may be too long for young, healthy adults. And 30 minutes is enough to help them feel more relaxed and keep them awake. If they nap longer, it will be hard for them to get out of the deep sleep.
If you have trouble falling asleep at night, reduce (减少) your daytime nap to under 45 minutes. Also nap before 3 p. m. in the afternoon.
1.The World Sleep Day is on ________.
A.January 21 B.February 21 C.March 21 D.May 21

Do you think you have a good memory? It is difficult to say exactly what memory is. Even scientists who have been studying memory for many years say that they are still trying to find out what it is. We do know that memory is not just one thing stored (存储) somewhere in the brain. Memory is made up of small pieces of information stored all over the brain.
The human brain is very small and light. But it needs about 20% of the oxygen that our body takes in. We can’t think well if our brain isn’t getting enough oxygen, so always make sure there is enough oxygen in the air when you need to learn or remember something!
Why do you forget things sometimes? The main reason for forgetting something is that you did not learn it well enough in the beginning. For example, if you meet some new people and right away forget their names, it is because you didn’t record the names when you heard them.
No one can remember everything, but everyone can learn how to improve their memory. Here are some ways:
·When you want to remember something, tell a friend about it. This way the new information becomes more memorable. Later on, think about the conversation with your friend. It will help you remember the information.
·Don’t over-train your brain. When you’ve remembered a list of new vocabulary, stop studying. It’s better to study a lot of material (材料) for a short time than a small part of material for a lot of time! But remember: you do have to practise your new vocabulary as soon as possible!
·If you have to remember something big, break it down into smaller parts. It’s easier to remember 198756430387 if you break it into four smaller bits: 198-756-430-387.
·If you want to remember a piece of information, but you can’t, don’t get angry. Relax when you study! Try to enjoy yourself. You are learning new things every minute. You will remember better if you are happy and relaxed.
In short, none of the ways can make your memory 100% perfect, but all of them are helpful.
1.Where is memory stored in your brain?
A.In the left brain. B.All over the brain. C.In the right brain. D.Some parts of the brain.
2.Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage?
A.We can make our memory 100% perfect.

3.What can you do to improve your memory according to the passage?
①Be relaxed when you study.
②Over-train your brain.
③Break the things down into smaller parts.
④Talk with your friends about the things you want to remember.

The brain (大脑) is the most amazing part of our body but nobody really understands it. But just like our body, it needs to be looked after well. Getting a good night’s sleep, eating healthy food and exercising are all important ways of looking after both our body and our brain.
Many people think their brain will slow down with age and as a result, their memory will get worse. The truth is that just like our body, we can also improve our brain. I’ve found I can improve my memory by imagining what I need to remember. For example, if I need to buy bread, milk and a birthday card for my brother, I will imagine a piece of bread, a bottle of milk with a cow on the front and a birthday card with a football on it.
It is true for an important day. If we have a picture of a thing in our mind, it’s much easier to remember it than just a number on a calendar.
Another way of improving our mind is to make sure we regularly visit new places and have new experiences. I find learning Spanish is a great way for me to keep the brain working, and that communication in any language is useful. Having a conversation is much better for our brain than looking at a computer screen or at other people talking on TV.

C.Asking for permission. D.Improving your memory.
4.What do we know from the fifth paragraph?
A.You need more time to remember information. B.Learning some new things needs more time.
C.A good sleep can help you remember better. D.A short rest is not helpful in learning new things.
5.What is the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.

1.In the writer’s opinion, students can’t remember words because ________.
A.they are too worried
B.they don’t use a proper way
C.they have memory problems
D.they don’t like to study

C.A single holiday trip. D.An exciting computer game.
2.Any travel can be ________, and give you memories to last a lifetime.
A.interested and attractive B.interesting and attractive
C.interested and relaxed D.interested and relaxing
3.What does the writer advise us to do before a travel?
A.We should plan the travel first. B.We should not plan the travel first.
C.We should take everything with us. D.We should take a camera with us.
4.What should we do during the travel?
A.Drive your car all the way. B.Stay in the car all the way.
C.Take a long walk to enjoy yourself. D.Don’t forget your work while having a travel.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.How to have a travel? B.How to plan your travel?
C.How to eat well during your travel? D.What to take at the end of the travel?
