Last summer, I went to France for a holiday. I was so excited but also a little nervous because my French was not good.
One hot afternoon, after exploring the city, I felt really tired. I wanted to tell my French friend, Claire, “I am a little tired.” I carefully said the words I’d learned: “Je suis un pue fatigue.”
But Claire burst out laughing. My face felt hot. What had I done wrong? Claire explained, “In French, there are words that sound similar but have very different meanings. ‘peu’ means ‘a little,’ but if you pronounce it differently, it can sound like ‘pue’, which means ‘stinks’ — like something smells bad. So, instead of saying you needed a rest, it sounded like you were saying you smelled bad and were tired”
This awkward (尴尬的) moment was a real eye-opener for me. It made me realize just how daunting pronunciation can be in a foreign language. Even small differences in pronunciation can completely change the meaning of what you’re trying to say. The same is true in English, for example, “ship” (a large boat) and “sheep” (a woolly animal) sound very similar, but they mean totally different things.
Now, I pay extra attention to how words sound and what they mean. And if I mix them up again? I’ll just laugh along. After all, laughing is part of learning — even if it’s a bit stinky sometimes.
4. Why was the author nervous about his holiday in France?
A. He was poor at French. B. He never went abroad.
C. He had no friends there. D. He was in short of money.
5. What awkward moment did the author meet?
A. He got a wrong person. B. He made a pronunciation mistake.
C. He was tricked by the locals. D. He spelt a word incorrectly.
6. What does the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Easy. B. Natural. C. Difficult. D. Clear.
7. How did the author’s experience in France affect him?
A. He smelled bad and was tired.
B. He hated learning foreign languages.
C. He no longer considered Claire as a friend.
D. He became open to mistakes in language learning.

Starting with the new school year, students in 17 more US states will face new cellphone rules, bringing the total to 35 out of 50 states. Among these states, some ban (禁止) phones throughout the whole school day, while others only ban them during class, allowing use between classes or at lunch.
This change has come remarkably quickly, as Florida became the first state in the country to pass such a law in 2023. The number of states adopting rules or laws to limit phone use is growing with rising public support. According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in June, 74 percent of US adults said they would support banning middle and high school students from using cellphones during class, up from 68 percent last fall.
However, this support didn’t come out of nowhere. Writer Gail Cornwall noted in The Atlantic magazine that having a phone nearby reduces interaction with others because notifications (通知) make people want to check their phones. Teenagers find it even harder to resist this urge because their brains are still developing.
The urge (欲望) to check phones isn’t just about the brain; it’s also social. Cornwall explained that many teens feel they need to be online all the time to keep up with friends. Being slow to respond can hurt friendships, causing “digital stress”, which can lead to lack of focus and even depression.
For students, the rules have added new school-day routines. “Most of them did not want to turn in their phones” at first, a student at McNair High School in Atlanta said. Now, that resentment (怨恨) is starting to fade.
Teachers appreciate the ban. Surveys by Emory University showed that teachers had noticed better concentration and more positive interactions among students. However, some experts said it’s not yet clear whether the ban has long-term benefits.
Meanwhile, many parents are against the ban. The US National Parental Union said that parents’ main concern is keeping their children safe during school emergencies. They believe direct communication with their children is important because schools often fail to communicate effectively.
The debate continues, but school smartphone bans reflect growing concerns about youth mental health and school performance.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By introducing a policy change. B. By comparing different cases.
C. By explaining the background. D. By presenting different opinions.
9. What are paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about?
A. The negative effects of phone usage.
B. The causes of dependence on phones.
C. The social functions of mobile phones.
D. The urgency of banning phone usage.
10. What do the surveys by Emory University suggest about the phone ban?
A. They are being accepted by students.
B. They have achieved positive outcomes.
C. They are well implemented by teachers.
D. They can be effective in the long run.
11. What is the main reason many parents oppose the phone ban?
A. They doubt its benefits for mental health.
B. They don’t believe it can solve the root problem.
C. They are worried about their children’s safety.
D. They think it will affect parent-child relationships.
D
The “hedgehog (刺猬) dilemma” is a famous metaphor from German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. In his 1851 book, he described how humans struggle with relationships through a story about hedgehogs. His advice was simple: keep your distance.
This sad story became widely discussed. Sigmund Freud and modern scientists studied this idea. In 2015, an award-winning short film called Hedgehog retold this story.
How does this apply to real life? Most people remember being hurt by close relationships – broken friendships, family conflicts, or romantic betrayals. Since these connections matter deeply, their damage hurts more. Should we stop trusting others? Schopenhauer said yes, but science would say otherwise.
A study in PLOS Medicine reviewing 148 studies with over 300,000 people found those with strong social connections live 50% longer. The National Institute on Aging warns that loneliness harms health as much as smoking 15 cigarettes daily – making Schopenhauer’s advice concerning.
When hurt repeatedly, people often fall into defense mode. Relationship expert Hilary Sanders explains common defense behaviors: going silent during arguments, seeing normal comments as criticism, or overreacting to small issues. These reactions often start in childhood. If parents often criticized or classmates bullied someone, they might develop habits like pretending not to care or getting angry easily. While these helped survive childhood pain, they cause problems in adult relationships when used unconsciously.
The good news is people can change. Through therapy, many learn to recognize their defense patterns and understand their origins. Couples can improve relationships by learning each other’s emotional triggers and responding thoughtfully instead of arguing. However, Sanders warns that defenses shouldn’t be removed suddenly — it’s like taking down a wall brick by brick.
Although Schopenhauer focused on the pain of closeness, the hedgehog story actually shows our deep need for connection. Unlike real hedgehogs, humans aren’t born with physical spines. By carefully lowering our defenses around trustworthy people, we might truly enjoy both warmth and safety in relationships.
12. Why does the author mention the hedgehog dilemma in paragraph 1?
A. To stress its importance. B. To support Schopenhauer’s advice.
C To recommend Schopenhauer’s book. D. To introduce the theme of relationship.
13. What is Schopenhauer’s key solution to the “hedgehog dilemma”?
A. Ignore pain. B. Seek therapy.
C. Avoid closeness. D. Build walls.
14. What major evidence goes against Schopenhauer’s advice?
A Freud’s studies. B. Long life from social ties.
C. Henry’s short film. D. Defense behavior of people.
15. What does Sanders say about close connection?
A. People should make gradual progress in it.
B. Humans can benefit from it unconsciously.
C. It can help children relieve childhood pain.
D. Couples should learn to defend it thoughtfully.

Bacteria know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d prefer to settle though, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2022 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand the companionship of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone attains a state of satisfaction.
Nevertheless, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about?
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1-2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan.
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
16. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B. Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C. Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D. Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
17. What did Lingchong You find in his study?
A. What encourages bacterial growth.
B. How sponges are exactly structured.
C. How bacteria grow independently.
D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
18. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges?
A. Poorly adaptive. B. Relatively harmless.
C. Partly distributed. D. Surprisingly unpleasant.
19. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Evidence of bacterial threat.
B. The classification of bacteria.
C. Methods to help bacterial growth.
D. Research into applications of bacteria.

【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. D

C. To recommend Schopenhauer’s book. D. To introduce the theme of relationship.
13. What is Schopenhauer’s key solution to the “hedgehog dilemma”?
A. Ignore pain. B. Seek therapy.
C Avoid closeness. D. Build walls.
14. What major evidence goes against Schopenhauer’s advice?
A. Freud’s studies.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

【答案】16. C 17. A 18. B 19. A

细节理解题。根据第四段““The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan.(Quinlan说:“海绵上的绝大多数细菌并不会使人患病,它们只会让海绵散发出异味。”)”可知,Quinlan认为海绵上的细菌相对无害。故选B。
【19题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.(如果有害细菌真的出现在现场,这种海绵特殊的结构特性就会使其成为细菌滋生和繁殖的理想场所。而且有证据表明情况确实如此。)”可知,由于最后一段提到有证据表明有害细菌会在海绵上生长繁殖,所以接下来很可能会讨论细菌威胁的证据具体是什么。故选A。

Sorry to learn about your issues with your friend. It’s normal to still feel awkward after making up with a friend. But the important thing is that you both chose to make peace — that’s already a big step forward.
If you truly value the friendship, it’s fine to take the initiative. Small actions, such as inviting your friend to hang out or sharing something funny, can help rebuild trust. These moments can slowly bring back the feeling of normalcy you used to have. At the same time, give your friend space if they seem quiet or distant. Sometimes people just need time to process what happened.
I believe you and your friend will get back to harmony soon.
