Why do We Yawn?
Do you yawn? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles (肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.
26. What does the underlined word “contagious” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Able to spread quickly. B. Able to breathe easily.
C. Able to change easily. D. Able to sleep quickly.
27. Why do Olympic runners often yawn before a race?
A They are too tired or too bored.
B. A yawn can let good things in.
C. A yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
D. A yawn can stretch the muscles in their faces.
28. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. Reasons for yawning. B. Advantages of yawning.
C. Disadvantages of yawning. D. Different ideas about yawning.
29. What can we probably infer from the passage?
A. People use different ways to yawn.
B. Scientists will do further research on yawning.
C. It’s hard to notice things quickly while yawning.
D. Some scientists think yawning is good for people.
30. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

5 Tips for Language Learning Success

Artist shapes a bit of Chinese culture
Over the past three years, Kang Jian has created more than 400 dough sculptures (面塑) and become a city-inheritor (继承人) of the dough sculpture in Mohe, Heilongjiang province.
Kang has shown an interest in art, especially dough sculpture since he was a child. Every time his parents made dumplings, he would ask for a small piece of dough to make animals — a rabbit, a fish or a small. Those small dough animals brought him lots of good childhood memories. However, Kang didn’t learn art in college. His family was poor and his parents were not able to afford his art education. Kang left college in 2016 and worked in the Mohe Forestry Bureau.
Then in 2018, during a visit to a museum in Beijing, Kang learned something about dough sculpting. Then he had the idea of taking his childhood interest up. He visited some famous artists and learned to make dough sculptures from them. His skills were improved a lot.
As a fan of Chinese literature, Kang would like to make dough sculptures of Chinese heroes, such as Sun Wukong and Guan Yu. In April 2022, he even finished the dough sculptures of 108 heroes from the novel Outlaws of the Marsh after 16 months of work.
When Kang is free, he is invited to give classes at schools to teach students to make dough sculptures. He is happy to have a chance to tell young people about dough sculptures and stories about Chinese folk heroes. He expects more young people to take up this traditional art form.

A. Able to spread quickly. B. Able to breathe easily.

A. They are too tired or too bored.
B Scientists will do further research on yawning.
C. It’s hard to notice things quickly while yawning.
D. Some scientists think yawning is good for people.

My Experience of Making a Poster
Last week, I made a poster of the great changes in my hometown. The purpose was to show my hometown’s development to more people, so I finished the work at home.
First, I collected old and new photos—like old small houses compared with new high-rise communities, and dirty old roads alongside beautiful new parks. Then I used a design app to arrange these photos neatly, wrote short introductions for each part, and added colorful borders to make the poster attractive.
When the poster got good comments on the website, I felt really proud. It was wonderful to let others know about my lovely, changing hometown.
