Two years ago,two high-school classmates each composed a mathematical wonder-a trigonometric
proof of the Pythagorean theorem(毕达哥拉斯定理的三角证明).Now,at age19,they've reported
finding 10 more proofs of it.
For 2,000 years, such proofs were considered impossible. But that didn't discourage Ne Kiya
Jackson and Calcea Johnson, who published their new proofs on October 28 in American Mathematical
Monthly,showing“you can make a splash(引人注目)even as a high-school student”.The teens
tackled Pythagorean theorem. In 1927,mathematician Elisha Loomis claimed that it could never be
proved using trigonometry. But in 2009,mathematician Jason Zimba announced the first trig-based proof
of Pythagorean theorem. The second came six years later from mathematician Nuno Luzia. These were the
only two until 2022,when Jackson and Johnson presented their first proofs, both seniors at St.Mary's
Academy.
"This proved to be the most challenging task of all,"they noted in their paper. They had to write up
their work and learn new skills, like coding. But working on the early proof "inspired the creative
process".Jackson says.Jackson and Johnson only published five proofs and decided to leave another five
proofs "for curious readers to explore",they wrote in their paper.
Publishing the proofs was a big achievement. But that doesn't mean the story is over. Now,"other
people might take the paper and generalize those proofs,or generalize their ideas,"mathematician
Lozano-Robledo says."It just opens up lots of mathematical conversations.
Jackson hopes the proofs will inspire other students to "see that difficulties are part of the process.
Sticking with it,you might find yourself achieving more than you thought possible.

worldwide. This work is designed to make human behavior accessible to everyday readers through artistic
depictions of body language across cultures. In these artistic representations of non-verbal communication,
we recognize universal human experiences that cross cultural and historical boundaries.
In this "visual guide to body language",artworks are carefully selected and arranged to highlight
connections across different periods and societies. We observe scenes of people interacting in various
social situations-from formal handshakes in business settings to intimate embraces between loved ones.
Individuals are portrayed in numerous positionsleaning forward in interest, crossing arms in defense,
or nodding in agreement.Though these artworks might have been created centuries apart, they capture
moments of human interaction that remain familiar to us all.
Body language in artworks.often serves to reveal the inner world of the subjects-their confidence,
anxiety,or social status. Before the scientific study of non-verbal communication, artists intuitively(
understood and captured these subtle signals in their works. In contemporary art,as our
understanding of body language has deepened, artists have used gestures and postures more purposefully
as primary elements in their creations-making body language itself the subject matter of their works.
Some might assume that in our digital age of video calls and virtual meetings, the study of physical
body language has become less relevant. From a modern perspective, while technology has changed how
we communicate,non-verbal communication remains as significant as any emoji or digital reaction. To
fully understand human interaction,we must observe the physical dimension:the eye contacts, the
postures, and the gestures employed during conversation. And compared to our increasingly digital
communications where expressions can be hidden,in-person interaction still provides the richest, most
immediate understanding of unspoken feelings.
28.What is the purpose of the book Body Language:The Unspoken Dialogue?
A.To teach readers basic artistic creation skills.
1
B.To compare digital and in-person body language.
C.To promote research on non-verbal communication.
D.To help ordinary people understand human behavior.
29.What does the underlined word "portrayed"probably mean in paragraph 2?
A.Described.
B.Contrasted.
C.Replaced.
D.Assumed.
30.What can be concluded about the contemporary artists?
A.They intentionally use gestures and postures as key elements.
B.They no longer rely on intuition when using body language.
C.They use body language to replace emojis in digital communication.
D.They have abandoned traditional ways of expressing inner world.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A The Role of Artists in Capturing Body Language
B.Art and Body Language:A Universal Dialogue

Forget to bring your charger? What if your clothing could generate electricity from the heat your body
naturally produces? This futuristic concept is becoming a reality.
Scientists at Chalmers University and Linkoping University in Sweden have developed a new yarn
(纱线)that can generate electricity from body heat,,using a polymer coating(聚合物涂层)applied to
ordinary silk yarn. The principle is the thermoelectric effect(热电效应),where temperature differences
between the human body and its surrounding environment create electrical energy. As the human body
produces constant heat, the warmer side of the thermoelectric material transfers electrons to the colder
side,generating an electrical current.
"The polymers that we use are bendable, lightweight and easy to use in both liquid and solid form.
They are also harmless,"says the study's first author Mariavittoria Craighero.Unlike previous attempts at
creating thermoelectric textiles,this breakthrough solves a long-standing problem:the lack of air-stable
polymers.
"The new type of polymer has outstanding performance stability in contact with air while at the same
time having a very good ability to conduct electricity.By using polymers,we don't need any rare earth
metals, which are common in electronics,"explains Craighero.
The new thermoelectric yarn could power sensors in clothing to monitor vital signs like heart rate and
body temperature without needing battery changes or recharging.Beyond healthcare,it could enable
lowpower functions in smart clothing. As power conversion efficiency improves, more power-demanding
features can be supported.
While the new polymers mark a major step forward in thermoelectric textiles,it's important to note
that the temperature differences in lab tests are much higher than those typically experienced in everyday
clothing.As a result,real-world performance may be lower.Moreover,the yam generates only 0.67
microwatts at a 70-degree temperature difference, which is far too little to charge devices like smartphones.
The manufacturing process is also time-consuming,making it impractical for large-scale commercial
production.
32.How does the author start the passage?
A.By listing data.
B.By raising questions.
C.By using a saying.
D.By comparing the facts
33.What can be known about the new thermoelectric yarn from the passage?
A.It generates electricity from body heat alone.
B.The polymers it uses are inflexible and harmful.
C.It needs rare earth metals for electrical conductivity.
D.It can power clothing sensors without recharging.
34.What is the author's attitude towards the new thermoelectric yarn?
A.Indifferent.
B.Negative.
C.Objective.
D.Uncertain.
35.What will the researchers most probably do next?
A.Stop researching the yarn.
B.Shift to other new energy sources.
C.Improve its efficiency and production.
D.Promote large-scale production immediately.

Soilless farming,as the name implies,is a type of farming where plants are cultured and grown
without the use of the soil.36 With this method, crops can be planted almost everywhere.
Due to lacking originality, conventional farming has many processes and requires.the manure
)of chemical mixtures to make the soil rich in nutrients.Soilless farming has less workload and can
enhance growth.37 Their needs are met throughout life, from seeds to ripe fruit.
In many soilless farming systems, water is recycled and reused until the plants are ready to harvest.
Hence, soilless farming is an alternative to dry regions.Additionally,it reduces the physical labor and
energy required from workers.38
By following standardized steps throughout the entire production process, soilless farming can supply
crops to the market every day, meeting consumers'needs.39 They will begin growing crops locally
all year round. In this way, even seasonal produce can be harvested anytime.
40 The rate at which pathogens (attack the farm will be zero as a result of how the
planting environment is concerned, and if the pathogen ever attacks, the infected plant will be easily
separated to avoid infecting the farm as a whole.Developed countries in the world are expected to adopt
this mode of farming because doing so reduces the level of food importation and increases the availability
of food in the country.
1
A.The quality of the harvested food may be controlled.
B.However,soil farming requires more workload.
1)
C.This helps them achieve higher profits while keeping costs very low.
D.After all, food imports might pollute the environment.
E.Nutrients are provided to the plants, majorly in liquid form.

"If you want it,you will have to eam it yourself."So,Owen started what he called "The Money
Project"-using science to do the everyday job of delivering newspapers.
As he had planned,Owen's method was special. He spent days doing research. He studied the weight
of the newspaper, planned the best delivery route using maps, and even found the best throwing angle for
each house. His planning board was covered in notes and drawings, looking more like a complex puzzle
than a simple job plan.
On his first Monday,he left home with his prepared basket. The first challenge appeared
immediately:the family bicycle was too large for him. After three failed attempts to ride it,he decided to
walk, pulling the basket of newspapers behind him.But the basket was so heavy that he soon felt too tired
to continue. He quickly thought of a solution.Using an old board, four wheels from broken toys, and some
rope,he built a simple homemade cart. Now he could pull the papers easily.
Then, the weather,Owen had assumed clear weather, tured out different from his forecasts.A light
rain began to fall.Owen immediately covered the newspaper basket with the plastic he had prepared. This
simple action prevented what could have been a real problem.
Despite these little episodes(小插曲),his first deliveries were perfect, and he felt pleased. The
final challenge came at 17th Elm Street. His goal was the welcome mat,but a large, sleeping dog was
lying right on top of it.Owen knew getting closer was too dangerous. From where he stood,he could not
throw the paper properly. He stood still, his carefully made plan falling apart before this unexpected
problem.

Dear Tom,
I'm glad you're interested in Chinese body language.I'd like to introduce the "Fist and Palm Salute"
to you.
It's done by holding your hands together in front of your chest and slightly bowing.People usually use
it to greet others, express thanks or say goodbye, especially during festivals or formal occasions. It
conveys respect and friendliness.
Remember,it's more formal than a handshake.Young people rarely use it in daily communication,
and we don't do it too casually in public.
If you want to know more, please feel free to ask me.

参考范文:
After a moment of panic,Owen's scientific mind took over.Noticing the low fence beside the steps,
he quickly calculated the distance and the required throwing angle. He rolled the newspaper into a tight
tube. With a precise underhand throw,he sent the paper sliding smoothly along the fence. It traveled in a
perfect bend around the sleeping dog and came to rest right at the front door.A small smile appeared on
his face as he continued his route, the crisis expertly solved through physics.
Weeks later,"The Money Project"finally paid off.Owen placed his carefully saved money on the
counter,receiving the long-wanted scientific tool.His mother's eyes met his,shining with pride.As he
held the tool, happiness filled him-not just for having it,but for earning it.This experience brought
him a greater prize:strong belief in his own mind and the knowledge that some fortunes are earned not
with money, but with effort and intellect. This was the real treasure, one that would only grow with time.
