Let us learn about some animals that have been to space. Fruit flies On February 20 1947, the United States sent some fruit flies into space to study the effects that cosmic radiation (宇宙辐射) might potentially have on astronauts in the future. They chose flies because they are genetically similar to humans. When they returned to Earth, the scientists found the flies alive, with no evidence of the effects of radiation. Mice Mice have long been used to find out more about how space travel will affect the human body. In fact, NASA has recently published a study of mice housed at the International Space Station. It shows that mice quickly adapt to microgravity (微重力) conditions. The very first mouse went into space in 1950, reaching an altitude of 137 km. However, unlike the fruit flies, the mouse died when the rocket broke into parts due to a parachute failure. Dogs Laika, a Russian homeless dog, went to space on November 3, 1957. She was picked up on the streets and was thought suitable because she was gentle and behaved well. The scientists also believed a homeless dog would be better at dealing with difficult conditions like microgravity than a pet dog. Laika is famous for being the first animal to orbit the Earth. However, she never returned. Spiders In 1973, two garden spiders called Anita and Arabella were used in an experiment to see if they could still build webs in space. Both spiders managed to build webs, and the webs were slightly finer than on Earth. The study showed a great deal about the effects of microgravity on motor response. 1. Which animal is the earliest to be sent to space? A. The fruit flies. B. The mouse. C. The dog. D. The spiders. 2. What made Laika be selected to go to space? A. Her light weight. B. Her good behavior. C. Her owner’s request. D. Her similarity to humans. 3. Anita and Arabella were sent to space to study . A. the effects of cosmic radiation there B. the quality of webs they made there C. how fast they could build webs there D. whether they could build webs there B On September 8, Morocco was hit by one of its worst earthquakes on record, destroying entire villages and killing over 3,000 people. I interviewed a woman who lived through the earthquake. Thérèse Sara Delannay’s house in Marrakesh initially appeared undamaged after the earthquake which rocked the city and the southwest of the country. Still, the Swiss national, who moved to Morocco after retiring, soon began to notice cracks forming in the walls. Her Moroccan-style guest house is situated in the heart of the city, just minutes from the old town. Delannay vividly remembers the onset of the earthquake: “I was preparing for bed when I felt a shake and heard a deafening sound, like a plane approaching,” she said. “But it came from the ground, not the sky. The house shook violently, as if being uprooted from the earth.” As her house trembled that night, she immediately checked the stairs to see if she could safely exit. “I found my neighbours doing the same,” she recalled. “We all gathered in an open square near a school.” Delannay and her neighbours, as well as many other residents in the area, spent the night outside, too fearful of aftershocks to return home, thankful at least for the warm weather. On the narrow street, the vibrations (震动) from passing cars often caused house windows and hanging lanterns to shake. With every aftershock following the extremely destructive earthquake, Delannay was constantly worried, questioning each vibration: “Is this from a car, or another aftershock?” Delannay returned to her house the morning after the earthquake to assess the damage and got in touch with her guests traveling in other parts of Morocco. She advised them to stay where they were and not risk returning to Marrakesh, where aftershocks were still possible. 4. What did Delannay do first after realizing it was an earthquake? A. She hid herself in a corner. B. She called her neighbours. C. She looked out of the windows. D. She checked the way out. 5. What made Delannay feel lucky after the earthquake? A. The warm weather. B. The open square. C. The narrow street. D. The neighbours around. 6. What did Delannay probably say to her guests traveling out? A. Don’t spend the night outside. B. Don’t stay in Morocco any longer. C. Don’t come back for the time being. D. Don’t be too far away from Marrakesh. 7. What’s the author of this text probably? A. A doctor. B. A reporter. C. A geographer. D. An earthquake survivor. C New research has found that two similar species of birds — both capable of showing self-control through delayed gratification — behave very differently around their favourite food when they have company. Published in the journal PLOS ONE, the study was led by researchers from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK, and the University of Cambridge, who compared the behaviour of two species of birds: Eurasian jays and New Caledonian crows. The study involved a rotating tray task, with the birds presented with two food choices, a high-quality option and a low-quality one, which they had to get from clear plastic cups. For jays, the high-quality food was mealworms and the low-quality food was bread, while crows’ preferred food was meat and the less preferred option was apples. Each bird was tested twice, and they watched as the less preferred food was added to the rotating tray first, then the high-quality food. They were alone for the first time, and at the second time, just before the less preferred food option became available on the rotating tray, a second bird was allowed to join in.The bird being tested could choose either the immediate option or wait 15 seconds for the delayed but preferred option to become available. The study found that each jay selected the mealworm while alone, but typically chose the bread when a second bird was present. In contrast, each crow stood its ground and waited for the meat over the apple in all the test conditions. “New Caledonian crows tend to be more sociable and tolerant of others than Eurasian jays, and while both hide food for later use, jays rely more on this strategy for their survival. This might explain why the jays changed their choosing strategy when other birds were present and selected the immediate, less preferred food to avoid missing out entirely,” said author Dr Rachael Miller. 8. Why are the foods mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To describe crows’ behaviour. B. To draw more attention to jays. C. To give basic facts about the test. D. To prove a point about the birds. 9. What does the underlined word “delayed” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Waiting for the next test. B. Appearing at a later time. C. Choosing at the first sight. D. Coming in a different way. 10. How are the results of the study showed? A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples. C. By quoting Dr Miller. D. By making comparisons. 11. What caused the jays’ change in Dr Miller’s view? A. Their social needs. B. Their lack of patience. C. Their pickiness in food. D. Their means of survival. D After several years of false starts electric bikes are finally entering the American mainstream. This year could be considered “the year of the e-bike”, according to John MacArthur, a transport researcher at Portland State University. E-bike sales in the United States leaped by 269% in the last three years, with the market size expected to have grown further this year, to be worth $2.59 bn. All e-bikes are considered climate-friendly, even more so than electric cars. But the rise of e-bikes has greater connotations than just in climate change, MacArthur points out. You can now get foldable ebikes for work, or large cargo e-bikes that can carry 550 lb in weight. Half of all trips made by Americans are under three miles — a distance e-bikes can easily conquer. “They break down barriers that people worry about — around distance, about physical ability, about being too hot and sweaty when you arrive somewhere,” MacArthur said. When Bryn Grunwald, a transport analyst, got her first e-bike six years ago, she initially felt it “sounded silly” but had a revelatory moment when she used it to get to college, via a steep hill. “I wasn’t sweaty; I wasn’t out of breath or red in the face,” said Grunwald. “I’ve been recommending them ever since.” However, there are warnings to the e-bikes’ success. They remain expensive compared with regular bicycles — ranging from about $1,000 to $16,000 or more — and many Americans still fear riding around on streets that are typically dominated by SUVs and lack separated bike lanes. “We won’t see this go anywhere unless we see more biking infrastructure in cities,” MacArthur cautioned. “The key thing is to have specific biking areas to reduce conflicts and accidents. E-bikes won’t solve everything, but I think more cities will be leaning into them.” 12. What does MacArthur intend to stress in paragraph 3? A. The significance of e-bikes. B. The popularity of e-bikes. C. The effect of climate change. D. The transportation in the US. 13. What did Grunwald think of e-bikes at first? A. Progressive. B. Hard-to-use. C. Worthless. D. Convenient. 14. What does MacArthur suggest doing in the future? A. Making strict bike laws. B. Designing bike-only paths. C. Cutting the price of e-bikes. D. Reducing the sale of SUVs. 15. Which is the best title for the text? A US sees an e-bike boom recently. B. Americans change their lifestyles. C. E-bikes can take you everywhere. D. E-bikes help fight climate change. At the time of this year when many gardeners are harvesting (收获) tomatoes, gardening expert Jessica Damiano reported about many pictures of strangely shaped tomatoes sent to her from fans of her gardening advice. ____16____ The good news, Damiano said, is that there is nothing wrong with the strangely shaped fruits. Unless otherwise diseased, they are perfectly good for eating. Their unusual appearance does not affect their taste or nutritional value.____17____ However, what causes the unusual appearance of tomatoes? If you have ever cut open a tomato, you know they are divided into parts, called locules. ____18____ Some kinds of the fruit, like cherry tomatoes, contain two or three. But when a plant experiences extreme temperature, the process of cell division in the developing fruit can go off track. Temperatures over 32 ℃ during the day and 27 ℃ overnight can lead the tomato to form an extra locule. But there is not enough room inside a tomato for the extra part, so it grows on the outside of the fruit. ____19____ What are the possibilities? According to Timothy McDermott, a professor at Ohio State University, under the right conditions, which means the weather are too hot or too cold, one or two tomatoes per plant could be affected. ____20____ The possibility of one of your tomatoes developing an extra locule is about one in a thousand, McDermott said. In fact, any tomato can grow an extra locule. But Damiano noted a hybrid (杂交种) seems less likely to have this deformation (畸形). A. Most tomatoes have about four or five locules. B. But always let the good-looking ones be your first choice. C. She said people questioned if the tomatoes are okay to eat. D. Not every tomato on an affected plant will be deformed, however. E. It is advised to give your plants more water when the weather is too hot. F. It depends on where they are in the development process and the weather. G. So when harvesting, remember the funny-looking tomatoes taste just as good. John and David were close friends. My cousin, Loke, was near in age to me and he was my best friend. Loke and I changed the large place in front of our house into bicycle tracks or badminton court(球场). At a later stage, Loke and I had a few badminton racquets(and badminton became one of our favourite sports. It did not matter that we did not know the rules-how to count the score and when to serve(发球). All we had to do was hit the shuttlecock(羽毛球)hard enough, so that it crossed over to the side of the opponent. As long as the shuttlecock was flying back and forth, we were happy. With so much practice in badminton, I believed that I was good at the game. After all, I did win many of the matches against the neighbourhood children. When I was in Secondary Two, our school held a badminton match. Our teacher asked for volunteers to sign up for it. Nobody responded. “Alright, looks like nobody wants to. Is there anyone who knows how to play the game? “Immediately, I raised my hand. ”Good, looks like we’ve a volunteer here, the teacher smiled. Forty pairs of eyes turned to look at me. Some were glad and some were confused but everyone cheered for sure. I had no idea then that that match would be one of the most awkward experiences of my life. The day came and I found myself face to face with my opponent. “That’s the school champion,” one classmate said in a low voice. My heart became a little heavy but still, I knew the game. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第四段“As her house trembled that night, she immediately checked the stairs to see if she could safely exit.(那天晚上,当她的房子颤抖时,她立即检查了楼梯,看看是否能安全出去。)” 根据第四段“Delannay and her neighbours, as well as many other residents in the area, spent the night outside, too fearful of aftershocks to return home, thankful at least for the warm weather.(Delannay和她的邻居,以及该地区的其他许多居民,都在外面过夜,因为害怕余震而不敢回家,至少对温暖的天气感到感激。)” 故选A。 根据最后一段“She advised them to stay where they were and not risk returning to Marrakesh, where aftershocks were still possible.(她建议他们待在原地,不要冒险返回马拉喀什,那里仍有可能发生余震。)” 根据第一段“On September 8, Morocco was hit by one of its worst earthquakes on record, destroying entire villages and killing over 3,000 people. I interviewed a woman who lived through the earthquake.(9月8日,摩洛哥遭遇了有记录以来最严重的地震之一,摧毁了许多村庄,造成3000多人死亡。我采访了一位经历过地震的女性。)”可知,这篇文章的作者采访了一位经历过地震的女性,由此可推测出这篇文章的作者可能是一名记者。故选B。 C New research has found that two similar species of birds — both capable of showing self-control through delayed gratification — behave very differently around their favourite food when they have company. 10 How are the results of the study showed? A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples. C. By quoting Dr Miller. D. By making comparisons. 11. What caused the jays’ change in Dr Miller’s view? A. Their social needs. B. Their lack of patience. C. Their pickiness in food. D. Their means of survival. C 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第三段“The study involved a rotating tray task, with the birds presented with two food choices, a high-quality option and a low-quality one, which they had to get from clear plastic cups. For jays, the high-quality food was mealworms and the low-quality food was bread, while crows’ preferred food was meat and the less preferred option was apples.(这项研究涉及到一个旋转托盘任务,向鸟类提供两种食物选择,一种高质量的选择和一种低质量的选择,它们必须从透明塑料杯中获取。对于松鸦来说,高质量的食物是面包虫,低质量的食物是面包,而乌鸦喜欢的食物是肉,不太喜欢的食物是苹果。)”可知,第三段提到食物是为了给出测试的基本事实。故选C。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据上文“Each bird was tested twice, and they watched as the less preferred food was added to the rotating tray first, then the high-quality food.(研究人员对每只鸟进行了两次测试,他们观察到次选食物先被放到旋转托盘上,随后才是优质食物。)” 根据第五段“The study found that each jay selected the mealworm while alone, but typically chose the bread when a second bird was present. In contrast, each crow stood its ground and waited for the meat over the apple in all the test conditions.(研究发现,松鸦在单独相处时都会选择面包虫,但当有另一只鸟在场时,通常会选择面包。相比之下,乌鸦在所有测试条件下都坚持自己的选择,始终等待肉类而非苹果)”可知,研究结果是通过比较松鸦和乌鸦在有同伴在场和没有同伴在场时的食物选择来展示的。故选D。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“New Caledonian crows tend to be more sociable and tolerant of others than Eurasian jays, and while both hide food for later use, jays rely more on this strategy for their survival. This might explain why the jays changed their choosing strategy when other birds were present and selected the immediate, less preferred food to avoid missing out entirely.(新喀里多尼亚乌鸦往往比欧亚松鸦更善于社交,更能容忍他人,虽然两者都把食物藏起来以备后用,但松鸦更依赖这种策略来生存。这或许可以解释为什么当其他鸟类在场时,松鸦会改变它们的选择策略,选择立即出现但不太喜欢的食物,以避免完全错过。)”可知,在米勒博士看来,生存方式导致了松鸦的变化。故选D。 D After several years of false starts, electric bikes are finally entering the American mainstream. A. US sees an e-bike boom recently. B. Americans change their lifestyles. C. E-bikes can take you everywhere. D. E-bikes help fight climate change. 12. A 13. E It is advised to give your plants more water when the weather is too hot. F. It depends on where they are in the development process and the weather. G. So when harvesting, remember the funny-looking tomatoes taste just as good. 16. C 17. G 18. A 19. D 20. I did not know what I was doing, obviously. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The whistle(口哨)blew and the game began. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I did not know where to put my face, now burning red with shame. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The whistle (口哨) blew and the game began. The shuttlecock was raining on me like fast stones. I was everywhere on the court chasing after the shuttlecock. I did not know how to count the score and I did not know when it was my turn to serve. It was obvious to everyone that I was quite unskilled. The match became my practice-my opponent took pity on me, guiding me whenever it was my turn to serve. By now, you can guess the result. I lost the game completely. I did not know where to put my face, now burning red with shame. Why did I raise my hand to sign up for the game? I saw the smile on the teacher’s face. Did she laugh at me? Were some of my classmates playing jokes on me when they praised me for daring to take part in the school badminton match? Walking slowly to my teacher, I had meant to say sorry. But my teacher patted me on the shoulder and said: “The result is not important. What’s important is that you have the courage to take the first step.” I was encouraged. Actually, it was “the first step” that made my life meaningful. 词汇激活 行为类 ①举手:raise one’s hand/put up one’s hand ②戏弄:play jokes on/play tricks on ③打算:mean to do/intend to do 情绪类 ①同情某人:take pity on/show sympathy for ②抱歉:sorry/apologetic 【点睛】【高分句型1】The match became my practice-my opponent took pity on me, guiding me whenever it was my turn to serve.(运用了whenever引导的时间状语从句以及现在分词guiding作伴随状语) 【高分句型2】Were some of my classmates playing jokes on me when they praised me for daring to take part in the school badminton match?(运用了when引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
