B As a child, Dan Fischer loved going to the beach and riding bikes along the coastline with his father, Karl Fischer. So when his father died of pancreatic cancer, he turned to the healing power of the ocean. At the start of this year, Fischer wrote his father’s name on his surfboard and “took him out into the ocean” in Newport, Rhode Island. His father’s name shone in the sun on what felt like a shared adventure. Inspired, Fischer made a video and posted it on social media the same day. “If you love the ocean, or you know someone who loves the ocean, or maybe you lost someone who just loved being outdoors…, you can comment on this video with their name and a bit of their story. And I’ll put their name on my board here, just like I’ve done with my father’s name,” he said in the video. “And I’ll take them out into the ocean for you.” Names poured in from thousands of strangers grieving (悲伤) for the loss of loved ones. Accordingly, the One Last Wave Project was born. The aim of the project was to exchange stories with a community of people going through the same pain. They were essentially healing together. About two months later, Fischer had received over 5,000 names and written most of them on two surfboards. The first two surfboards ran out of space — he’s working on getting more. He wrote the names in neat letters on the surfboard and put a clear acrylic (丙烯酸的) coat over them so they didn’t wash off. Though a lot of people have been struggling with grief, Fischer was amazed by the responses that have poured in. “If I am able to help one person or one person shares their name, that is enough for me,” he said. “But I am blown away — by not just the number of people sharing, but the depth of stories and love that they are sharing.” And he plans to take his project around the world and connect with even more people — through sharing grief and the power of the ocean. 4. Why did Dan Fischer first write his father’s name on his surfboard? A. To memorize his father with the ocean’s healing power. B. To start a new surf project. C. To show his love for surfing to strangers. D. To ask others to share their stories. 5. How did Dan Fischer feel about people’s responses to his project? A. Amazed and deeply touched. B. Tired but proud. C. Confused and worried. D. Disappointed but hopeful. 6. What does Fischer intend to do next? A. He will share his project with the world. B. He will connect to more social media. C. He will extend the project worldwide. D. He will sail around the world with strangers. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The healing Power of Surfing. B. A Project to Collect People’s Names. C. Dan Fischer’s Surfing Adventure. D. One Last Wave: Grief, Love and the Ocean. C Getting a puppy can seem like a joyful idea, but a study has found that raising a dog can take its toll on families. A team at the Royal Veterinary College in London surveyed 600 adults and children in the UK about their experiences of getting a puppy. More than one third of adults said the young dog was “more challenging than expected” because they struggled to find the time to walk them. Parents also said their children often failed to put in the hours playing with the dog—despite being the ones who had begged for a puppy. The study found the burden often fell on mothers. “Many caregivers hoped their children would take on some responsibility for their dog’s care,” the researchers said. “But one in five reported that their children had taken less responsibility than expected.” While children reported getting comfort and happiness from their pets, some complained that the puppies were “too attention-seeking”. They said the dogs wanted affection when they were “doing homework, watching television or trying to relax”. The survey added that many children bonded with their dogs by hugging them, but this “close physical contact” put them at risk of being bitten. The study, published in the journal PLOS One, concluded that getting a puppy “was not of consistent mental health benefit”. It added that women almost always ended up as the pet’s “primary caregivers”, and “some found the addition of a dog to the household very challenging”. The researchers advised families to discuss how responsibilities would be divided before getting a puppy. 8. What does the underlined words “take its toll” mean in the first paragraph? A. Going hand in hand. B. Having a bad effect. C. Making little difference. D. Playing an important role. 9. Why did adults say the young dog was more challenging than expected? A. Because they didn’t want to walk the dog. B. Because they found it hard to keep up with the dog. C. Because they were too busy to walk the dog. D. Because they struggled with the dog. 10. What is unable to explain why the children fail to take the responsibility to play with the dog? A. The dogs didn’t give them comfort or happiness. B. The dogs were too attention-seeking. C. The dogs wanted affection all the time. D. The dogs disturbed them. 11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Culture. B. Sports. C. Life. D. Entertainment D The head of Ofsted said that if he should return to school leadership, one of his first decisions would be to impose (颁布) a ban (禁令) on smartphones. Sir Martyn Oliver reflected on his experience as a head teacher in 2009, when a simple order to “put your phone away” worked really well. “But after the Covid lockdown, that suddenly wasn’t enough,” he said. “When you said, ‘Put your phone away,’ I saw children still taking it out. Something fundamentally changed.” Speaking at an event on Tuesday evening hosted by The Times and Parentkind, Oliver said “phones became better and smarter. Social media became very important in children’s lives just as we set them off to school. The best schools have great relationships with their parents and great relationships with their children. If I go back to being a head teacher, I wouldn’t just say “put your phone away”, I would ban them. Ban, ban, ban them ... I mean not to have them at the start of the day and not getting them back until the end of the day. Head teachers can make that decision.” Almost all schools in England have implemented (实施) some form of phone ban and the discussion of smartphone use in schools also drew strong views from experts who urged (催促) the government to take a view of the problem beyond the classroom. Dame Rachel, the Children’s Commissioner (儿童事务专员) for England, said she did not believe ministers “talk enough about family or supporting family”. She added: “It’s easy for them to talk about banning phones in schools. What I think they need to be doing is thinking outside of the school day. How do we help parents? How do we give them advice and guidance?” Justine Roberts, chief executive of Mumsnet, described smartphones as “dangerous and addictive by design”, while Jason Elsom, chief executive of Parentkind, likened them to drugs: “But it’s digital drugs. You’re constantly thinking about it because that’s what smartphones do to you — constant dopamine (多巴胺) hits.” Research by ParentKind found that a third of parents admitted to setting a bad example to their children and ignoring their children sometimes when looking at their phones. 12. What made Sir Martyn Oliver change his attitude towards students’ smartphone use at school? A. The poor effect of the order “put your phone away” after Covid lockdown. B. The importance of social media in children’s lives. C. The advice from other school leaders and experts. D. The smartphones’ becoming better. 13. According to Sir Martyn Oliver, what should schools do regarding smartphones? A. Allow limited use of smartphones during breaks. B. Teach students how to use smartphones responsibly. C. Let teachers decide when students can use phones. D. Completely ban students from bringing phones to school all day. 14. What is Dame Rachel’s attitude to the government’s approach to the smartphone issue? A. She thought highly of it. B. She didn’t care about it. C. She wasn’t satisfied with it. D. She didn’t approve of it. 15. What is this passage mainly about? A. Negative effect of smart phones. B. Government’s guidance on phone use. C. Parents’ influence on children’s phone use. D. Ways to deal with smart phones in school and at home. Why do we like sports? Jamie Carragher and Declan Rice are two English footballers who have said their sport is “all about winning”. ___16___. Sports can reveal deep beauty and life lessons. Watching a man hanging in a Maltese position or a woman on the balance beam (平衡木), we’ll feel their unique strength. They take delight in the beauty of their bodies, and share that with us. ___17___. They do it with extra care and delight that invite us into what they are doing. In a game, there is nothing wrong with an eagerness to do things well, but that’s different from demanding that it must happen. Former England football manager Roy Hodgson disliked the phrase — “a must-win game”. He believed much psychological suffering is created by believing “musts”. ___18___. Phrases like “I must” and “I should” only increase pressure. Stick with “I want” or “I would like”. Then we can drop back into that calm, peaceful self. ___19___. The problem is that it doesn’t tend to work that way. Caitlyn Jenner, an American track and field athlete, once talked about how she still felt troubled, even after winning Olympic Gold. Remember, we can only treasure this very moment that truly exists. Winning is frequently unimpressive, but the experience itself is enjoyable. The day after Jonny Wilkinson kicked the winning goal, he felt empty. However, he experienced a transcendence (超越) on the field. We are happiest when we lose ourselves in the experience. ___20___. A. They don’t just do the sport B. However, that’s not the case C. A way to avoid this is to watch your language D. Seldom do we think how upset we’ll be if we lose the game. E. 4. A 5. A 6. C 7. A. Culture. B. Sports. C. Life. D. Entertainment 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第一段“Getting a puppy can seem like a joyful idea, but a study has found that raising a dog can take its toll on families.(养一只小狗似乎是个令人愉快的想法,但一项研究发现,养狗会给家庭take its toll)”可知,前后句为转折关系,前面说养小狗是令人愉快的想法,后面用but转折,说明养狗会给家庭带来不好的影响。同时根据第三段中“More than one third of adults said the young dog was “more challenging than expected” because they struggled to find the time to walk them.( 超过三分之一的成年人表示,养幼犬“比预期的更具挑战性”,因为他们很难抽出时间带它们出去散步。)” 根据第三段“More than one third of adults said the young dog was ‘more challenging than expected’ because they struggled to find the time to walk them.(超过三分之一的成年人表示,这只小狗“比预期的更具挑战性”,因为他们很难抽出时间遛狗)”可知,成年人说小狗比预期的更具挑战性是因为他们太忙了,没时间遛狗。 根据第五段“While children reported getting comfort and happiness from their pets, some complained that the puppies were “too attention-seeking”. They said the dogs wanted affection when they were “doing homework, watching television or trying to relax”.(虽然孩子们报告说从宠物那里得到了安慰和快乐,但一些孩子抱怨小狗“太引人注意了”。他们说,当他们“做作业、看电视或试图放松”时,狗想要得到关爱)”可知,孩子们没有承担起和狗玩的责任,是因为小狗太引人注意,总是想要得到关爱,会打扰到他们,而不是因为小狗没有给他们安慰和快乐。B选项“The dogs were too attention-seeking.(小狗太引人注意了)”、C选项“The dogs wanted affection all the time.(小狗总是想要得到关爱)”、D选项“The dogs disturbed them.(小狗打扰了他们)”都能解释孩子没有承担责任的原因,A选项不能解释。故选A。 C。 D The head of Ofsted said that if he should return to school leadership, one of his first decisions would be to impose (颁布) a ban (禁令) on smartphones. A 13. D 14. C 15. 故选A。 根据第三段中“If I go back to being a head teacher, I wouldn’t just say ‘put your phone away’, I would ban them. Ban, ban, ban them ... I mean not to have them at the start of the day and not getting them back until the end of the day. Head teachers can make that decision.(如果我再当校长,我不会只说“把手机收起来”,我会禁止它们。 根据第四段中“Dame Rachel, the Children’s Commissioner (儿童事务专员) for England, said she did not believe ministers “talk enough about family or supporting family”. She added: “It’s easy for them to talk about banning phones in schools. What I think they need to be doing is thinking outside of the school day. How do we help parents? E. Doing sports can help us strengthen our body and mind F. We tend to think we’ll not feel satisfied until we achieve what we have expected G.
