The word mukbang is from the Korean words “muk-ja” (let’s eat) and “bang-song” (广播). Hosts eat amounts of food in front of a camera while interacting with their audience. The show appeared first in South Korea, where the videos became popular via live stream (直播) channels.
The show comes from South Korea but other countries follow in significantly different ways. Take America as an example, Koreans plan their streams around dinnertime hours so viewers can feel like they are sharing a meal with a friend. And yet Americans tend (倾向于) to be more conversational in their videos which are pre-recorded. Korean mukbangers tend to eat traditional Korean dishes while American mukbangers eat a wider variety of foods.
Why are millions of people so drawn to watching perfect strangers eat in the first place? It’s a combination of sensory, psychological, social, emotional, environmental even neurological factors, says Rachel Herz, a neuroscientist at Brown University Alpert Medical School. She specially explains how food attracts our senses and develops our behavior when it comes to what we like to eat. A big part of that neurological factor is the ASMR (autonomous sensory-motor response), described as a brain feeling which can help people relaxed from the familiar sounds of eating in the mukbang videos.
Earning the popularity and money, more and more mukbangers appear. However, the show has not come without its unfavorable comments. As our habits change, we spend more and more social engagement on social media. It’s only a matter of time before mukbang affects our behavior around food. Viewers could probably develop unhealthy eating habits from watching. Despite the negative comments, mukbang continues to do well on the Internet and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon.
24. What do we know about Mukbang?
A. It is an eating live show. B. It is a TV channel
C. It is an eating competition. D. It is a video website.
25. What do Americans like to do about their streams?
A. Play them without a stop. B. Show various dishes in them.
C. Record them after dinnertime. D. Chat more with friends in them.
26. Which statement does Rachel Herz probably agree with?
A. Strangers like to eat what is on show.
B. The viewers’ bad behaviors can get adjusted.
C. Weak-minded people are most likely to overeat.
D. The eating sounds can easily cause viewers’ interest.
27. What might be talked about following the passage?
A. The changes of our habits. B. The comments of viewers.
C. The management of the show. D. The development of the Internet.

Bing Dwen Dwen, the cute mascot (吉祥物) of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, has been selling like hotcakes. Why is the ice-glazed panda so popular? What are the fantastic ideas behind its design?
Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts professor Cao Xue, who is in charge of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics mascot design team, told the China Media Group (CMG) the story.
Now, Cao Xue still clearly remembers that the exciting day came on the 17 of September, 2019, when the Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympic Games officially announced the mascot designed by Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts as the mascot of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. After discussion by many experts and scholars, the mascot got a new name — “Bing Dwen Dwen”.
The 14-member design team led by Cao Xue all work as teachers and graduate students from the School of Visual Arts and Design of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, there were almost no holidays, and the whole team needed to revise and discuss every day, and they ended up completing over 10, 000 manuscripts (稿件). In the end, Bing Dwen Dwen, based on a panda, was selected from nearly 6, 000 entries from 35 countries and regions.
Bing Dwen Dwen is a panda with a high sense of science and technology. It captures attention with its full-body “shell” made out of ice. Cao told us that the inspiration (灵感) came from traditional Chinese snack “ice-sugar gourd,” also known as tanghulu, while the shell also is similar to a space suit — a nod to embracing new technologies for a future of infinite possibilities. Although the tanghulu idea was widely praised, it wasn’t enough to represent the image of a big country. So the team tried again and again, changing the image in the ice shell into elk, tiger, rabbit …

Recently, the researchers for underwater exploration introduced a new robot, which is soft and has no harm to sea life when it works. However, they are not so welcome in the robot market because they are quite slow and have a hard time operating through the water. But that may change soon thanks to a self-driven soft robot created by researchers at the University of California.
For their design, the researchers got inspiration from one of nature’s fastest swimmers — squids (乌贼). They can use their strong muscles to draw in water and promptly spread it out. By doing this, they are able to move forward at a fast speed.
The recently-developed robot, which looks like a paper lantern, was basically built using soft materials. An nozzle (喷嘴) fixed on one side helps draw in and release water each time the robot shrinks, which enables it to swim forward, similar to a squid. A plate holds a waterproof part that can house a camera to record data, which is of great value to further development of the robot. It also has its own power source, allowing it to float for a long time.
“Importantly, we recreated all the key features that squids use for high-speed swimming. This is the first robot that can achieve the result by changing its body shape, which improves swimming efficiency (效率).” said Professor Michael T .
Though the squid robot has not been tested in open waters, it successfully swam around coral and fish in a large tank. What’s more, the robot had an impressive speed of 18 to 32 centimeters per second, or about half a mile per hour. Though nowhere close to real squids, it is faster than most other soft robots.
32. What do researchers say about the present robot?
A. It is quite popular in the market. B. It is easy to operate underwater.
C. It has a bad effect on sea creatures. D. It needs improving in some ways.
33. What does the underlined word “promptly” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Safely. B. Quickly.
C. Patiently. D. Naturally.
34. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the robot?
A. Its appearance. B. Its production.
C. Its research background. D. Its working process.
35. What is the writer’s attitude towards the squid robot?
A. Curious. B. Negative.
C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.

Elements To Impress Your Boss and Advance Your Career
What do leaders look at to judge employees (员工) outside of the work product?
I developed this series because I often get questioned on how to create and have a successful career. There are little things that many people don’t think about. 36
● What time you get to work
37 . Even though your start time is 8 am, it does not mean you should walk in and log in at that time. This means you can stand out if you come in at 7:45 am, so you have time to get settled and begin working at 8 am.
38
This is for those who have to physically go into an office. If you are up out of your seat and hit the elevator at or before the end of your workday, then we have a problem. Part of success means putting in a full day and sometimes a little extra time when needed.
● What you say and how you say it
Ever heard of putting your foot in your mouth? A time or two may be forgivable. 39 , that’s not acceptable. Communicating negatively about your job on what the company is not only how you are observed by your boss, but also impact those you work with.
● How and if you take part in meetings
40 , with nothing to offer, you could be seen as a weak link. Many organizations work in teams and co-operations. Your input is as valuable as anyone else’s.
● How you dress
I know — we are in a world of business casual. But, if you want to be recognized as a professional, I suggest supporting more on the side of business than casual.
A. What time you leave work
B. Whatever you say is also very important
C. But if this happens all the time or very often
D. If you are only ever the receiver of information
E. How long you should stay away from your seat
F. Being timely can raise your professional position in a way
G. And a lot of times these little things can contribute to your advance

A Writing Task
The summer vacation was over, so Tim and his classmates came back to school happily.
On the first day of school, Mrs. Green, Tim’s English teacher, gave the class a writing task. “Boys and girls, today’s homework is to write something in some way that is related to your summer vacation,” she said. “Be as creative as you can. But” the teacher added, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
That night, Tim sat at his desk and decided to go about this writing homework. He stared at the blank sheet paper for quite a few minutes, thinking what to write about. To tell the truth, this time, he didn’t want to write about his summer vacation as usual. What could he write about, except a dog, a water park, a visit to his grandma with his father, two weeks of camp, and … ? Boring … He’d actually been happy to get back to school. But he made up his mind to write what he really wanted. It was not an essay (短文) at all but a short story, a science fiction (科幻小说). It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer — it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacation either. The aliens (外星人) on the planet worked 24 hours a day. They wished they had vacations one day.

Paragraph 1:
The next morning he handed in the story, but later that night he lay awake until I am,thinking,
"Why did I write such a story?"He worried that the teacher might not like it and give him a low
score. He couldn't help but regret not writing about something real. But he reminded himself that he
had followed his heart and had fun writing the story. The aliens he had imagined might be unrealistic,
but the lesson they taught him was not.He realized that there are always people who work hard and
hope to have a better life, just like the aliens he created. He felt a sense of relief that he had written
down his thoughts, and decided to keep writing stories in his own way.
Paragraph 2:
But when he got to class the following day, what the teacher said was a great surprise to him.
Mrs.Green read out loud his story to the class, and praised him for his creativity and originality. She
said that she was impressed by how he had combined science fiction with the topic of summer
vacation.Tim felt like he was dreaming. He never expected his story to be so well-received.He was
beaming with pride and happiness, and looked at his classmates, who were nodding in agreement.
